Here is my situation. We currently have 2 versions of photoshop CS. I use CS1, and my dad uses CS3. Now, I would like to upgrade to CS5. So my question is can I use the CS3 serial number we have to upgrade to 5, without affecting his ability upgrade down the line? I don't want to buy 5 if he won't be able to buy a upgrade version later on.

Look around for a CS4 upgrade. They're still available from several sellers, and I believe CS4 purchases still qualify for post-announce upgrades to CS5 (but verify this with Adobe customer service).
A single Photoshop license is a single Photoshop license and qualifies you for single upgrade.

For Creative Cloud applications, there are no serial numbers. You need an Adobe ID and have to purchase the software through your Adobe ID. When you log into the Creative Cloud application, the software matches your ID with your purchased software and makes them available for download.

to my knowledge, the keyboard layout cannot be determined by the serial number; it might be determinable from the full model number, though. The two “INT”s on the label suggest that it has an International English keyboard.
The main difference between the International English keyboard and the US English keyboard is that the International English keyboard has a “vertical” Return key, while the US English keyboard has a “horizontal” Return key. The International English keyboard has an extra key between the left Shift key and the Z key, and the left Shift key shrinks to the size of a Command key to accommodate the extra key.

Im looking to buy CS3 (please don't ask why not CS4 or 5), off of a friend who has a genuine copy which has never been installed. He has lost manuals and the product keys. He says i can buy a product key for it?
