I am eyeing a used T400 but it comes with an older a/g wireless card- Can I replace it with a newer draft-N pci-mini card internally? Will it integrate well? Any particular brand to use?

Thanks. The question remains (in my little pea-brain anyway) is the card white-listed by MFGR and model, or does it have to be from Lenovo? That is, can I install an Intel 5100 from the local store, or do I have to order from big L?

Apologies for hijacking your thread. I may be mis-reading it (wouldn't be the first time) but it would be too bad if you bought a card you couldn't use. BTW, I have swapped Intel 5100s and 5300s (from Lenovo) in and out of my T400 and it isn't that big a deal. Just read the manual and take your time

Yes, you can. If you use the current AirPort Express, Apple says that you can connect up to 50 devices. Realistically, make that 25-30 or so before the speed really begins to drop.
Remember that you will have to reset the modem though, before you connect it to the AirPort Express as the modem "remembers" the settings for your computer.

O.k. I tried searching the forums for an answer but the odd nature of my problem, and the immense database of topics made it very difficult to find a similar post.
The general issue/idea:
Run a wireless network using Airport Extreme - Connect desktop mac via ethernet and Roku player via wi-fi. Can't get the desktop mac to connect via ethernet when I restart the network/Airport Extreme.
My Father in law has my old computer; It's a PowerMac G5 (Dual 1.8GHz CPUs) running OS 10.5.8), connected to internet via cable (TimeWarner) modem. It does NOT have an Airport or Airport Extreme card installed. The computer works fine, and I don't believe that I 'need' an Airport Card in order to use the Airport Extreme (it's a brand new/refurbished model) in the manner described below.
I would like to use the Airport Extreme to generate/run a wireless network (Do I need an Airport Card in order to generate/run a wireless network? Doesn't the AE actually do that?), connect the desktop Mac to the network via Ethernet (I shouldn't need an Airport Card to do that, should I?) and connect a 'Roku Player (802.11g capable) to the network via wi-fi.
As far as I know, this should be possible.
Basic steps/as I understand them:
A. Connect ethernet from cable modem to AE.
B. Connect ethernet from AE to desktop Mac.
C. Create the wireless network using desktop Mac and Airport Utility.
D. Restart AE to start the wireless network running.
E. Connect Roku to wireless network over wi-fi.
I have no problems with A & B. Once the AE is connected to the desktop Mac, I'm able to get internet via ethernet as it passes through the AE. I can then create a wireless network (step C.) using the Airport Utility (and setup assistant). The problem starts after I've configured the wireless network.
Once I've configured the wireless network, the Airport Utility software prompts me to restart the AE in order to start the wireless network.
As soon as I restart the AE, my desktop Mac tries to connect to the 'wireless' network, even though it's already connected via ethernet. I don't have a wireless card in the Mac, and I don't want to connect the desktop using wi-fi/wireless. It's connected via ethernet, works fine during configuration, and I don't ever anticipate a desire to connect the desktop via wi-fi.
No matter what I do, I can't get the desktop to connect via ethernet. The only network connection option I'm offered is 'Rescan'. O.k. the desktop can't find the wireless network (because it doesn't have a wireless card), and I'm unable to continue with the Airport Utility. I can't make any further changes to the network (the options to manually change the network configuration are not available as the desktop Mac cannot currently talk to the AE - It's still trying to connect wirelessly), and the desktop has no internet connection as it's trying to connect wirelessly.

I'm perfectly willing to factory reset the AE and start over.

That is correct, you could connect the PowerMac G5, via Ethernet, to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or any other wired router for Internet access. You do NOT need an AirPort Card for wired access ... ONLY if you want the G5 to connect to a wireless network.

That is correct, the AEBS is a wireless router that can provide a wireless network. The AirPort Card, on the other hand is a wireless adapter used to allow a Mac to connect to a wireless network, created by any wireless router ... not just those provided by Apple.

As soon as I restart the AE, my desktop Mac tries to connect to the 'wireless' network, even though it's already connected via ethernet. I don't have a wireless card in the Mac, and I don't want to connect the desktop using wi-fi/wireless.
Do you actually have an AirPort Card installed in the G5 now? If so, then it might be possible that the "firing order" for network connectivity has AirPort at the top of the list under System Preferences > Network. Just change the order to have Ethernet at the top and disable AirPort to ensure that the G5 connects by Ethernet only.

I was having the same problem with an iPhone 4 and Windows XP. I finally fixed the issue! I read several posts over the past month telling me to make sure that both the PC and iPhone were on the same network. I thought that both were on the same network; however, I was using my "Guest network" to connect my iPhone to my Airport Base Station. In order for both devices to be on the same network, the first 3 numbers of both IP addresses must match. For example, if the PC's IP address is 199.167.1.X, the iPhone's IP address must be 199.167.1.Y. I signed onto my password-protected network from the phone just to see what IP address it would use. As soon as I logged on, my iPhone started to sync wirelessly. I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but I would suggest comparing the IP addresses of your PC and iPhone before doing anything else. For those posting that the PC and iPhone must be on the same Wireless network, my PC is hard-wired to the Airport Extreme and it still works!

Well here is the issue, as I said, my husband is deployed and he is the one that will be trying to access it. I have the mac book here with me. He has an iphone,ipad, and a windows based laptop with him... Is there a way for him to access it with these devices, to include the windows laptop?
If all of this works can I load pics and movies on it and him be able to access them and then watch the movies?

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off. How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM. My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore. Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc. I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads. Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system. I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system. But are there other options to connect the new TC. Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above. after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working. Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant. I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work. The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network. Are we going backwards?

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??

I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC. the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.

You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

Alternative to Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN wireless network card?

I'm finding that my Intel 5100 AGN wireless network card is not performing as well as it used to. I've tried everything... even drivers are fully up to date. But I keep losing connection to my wireless router, even though connection strength is between 3-4 bars. I find that I rarely get dropped if I have 5 bars. But if it weakens to 3, I get periodically dropped no matter what wireless network I am using.
I want to replace this card with something better, but of course compatible with the HP dv5 (my specific model is dv5t-1000). Any recommendations?

What I meant by my statement regarding you having the better of the available cards for your notebook is that, yes, I am sure the Intel 5300 is an improvement over the 5100, but the problem is you can't install the 5300 in your notebook.
The Intel 5300 is not supported (only the cards/part numbers listed in the service manual can be installed) and your notebook wouldn't boot until you removed the card.
You can try a different card listed in the manual if you want.
However, you are limited to the:
Broadcom 4322 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN module
Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g WLAN module (not a wireless N card)
I suppose you can use an external USB adapter but I would get one with an external antenna connected to it, because I would have to believe the 3 antenna wire setup in your notebook has to provide superior reception over a plain USB wireless adapter with an internal antenna as its only antenna.
The antennas go all the way up to the top of your screen.
Did you fiddle around with your network card's advanced settings? They can be found by clicking on the card in the device manager, clicking on the advanced tab. make a note of where the settings are now so if something goes buggy, you can change them back.

I had set up a WEP Network but I need to set up a WPA (personal) network now and i cant seem to change the WEP network to a WPA2 network.

The MacBook Air will autodetect WEP and WPA security changes and should allow you to reconnect again. If the password stored in the Mac is wrong, it will ask you to enter it again.
With that said, to forget a network do the following:
- Go to the Apple Menu and select System Preferences
- Click on the Network icon
- Highlight the Airport / WiFi entry (sepending on 10.6 vs 10.7)
- Click the Advanced button at the bottom
- Make sue the Airport / WiFi tab is selected
- Click on the network name you want to forget
- Press the minus button at the bottom of the list.
You may also want to consider restarting if you are having this issue.

Can't connect to wireless network on bootup like before

Hello all. Well, I seem to have run into some difficulties here while configuring my system. The thing is I cannot connect to my wireless network on bootup anymore. I stayed about 4 months without using Arch Linux, then I decided to reinstall it from the ground up on the SAME machine, which has suffered NO changes; it is the exact same computer. The only change since then is that I changed my WEP encryption key on my router. I had a functional rc.conf file which I keep just for taking a look at while I'm configuring the system. The Networking section follows:

The only thing I changed from my previous rc.conf was my WEP hex key, which I have already triple-checked. I used the same hostname (which is also correctly configured in /etc/hosts) and the essid is the same. In 2 years of Arch I used this configuration file and it worked flawlessly, but now it simply does not work anymore for boot-up connection. I simply get a FAIL after about 30 sec in '::Starting Network' on bootup. Then, by issuing 'iwconfig', I can see that my interface (wlan0) is up and the ESSID is set to "MySpot", but the access point is not associated. I do not know what is going on, as it never happened before. However, it works just fine if I do the step-by-step manual configuration from command line after my system is up and I can get internet access in such a way without any problems. Never did it before (so I do not know if this was the case for my previous installations), but by running 'lspci | grep -i net' I do not see my wireless extension listed, although 'iwconfig' shows it just fine. I am trying to make it work using rc.conf just as it did before. As I mentioned, my network connection is working, but not from bootup as it did before, so I do not know what to do. Did anything on Arch radically change since then? Couldn't find anything on the wiki pages besides using another network start method. Any help is greatly appreciated...
Edit: I just found out that my wmaster0 is missing...could that have anything to do with my issue?

Just for the sake of not letting this go without any answer, I've just done a full system reinstall and now I've got back my wmaster0 (the driver module for my wireless network card is rtl8187). Searching the internet, it seems that wmaster0 is an internal master device that is to be used by the module, and not the user. The lack of wmaster0 may indicate that something is amiss on the driver installed on your system. Now that I've got it back, my rc.conf file (described on previous post) works like a charm. However, I remember I did have wmaster0 on my previous Arch installation and it just disappeared all of a sudden. So far the only thing I've done different is that I have not yet upgraded my new installation, so my guesses are that something on the upgrade procedure is breaking the driver in some way. Maybe all those package renames and such? I'll upgrade my system later (don't have the time now) and I'll get back here with any new findings. Regards...

I have a system state called network which has the description of All users who are logged on via a network connection. Is that the same thing you mean? Then how do I create the rule? I get to where I have a NAC rule but I'm not for sure what to choose after that.

OS X can't connect to wireless network. Windows can?

A friend of mine has 64-bit WEP on his home router. I know WEP is bad, but it can't do WPA and he can't afford to buy another router. Anyway, I can't connect to it on OS X. After I type in the password, I get the error that it can't connect and I have the options OK or Try Again. Try Again never connects. I thought it was a weird hardware issue, with my wireless network card not being compatible with the router. But if I reboot into Windows, I connect just fine.
For the record, it's a 2WIRE DSL Modem + Wireless Router (HomePortal 1000HW to be exact).
I thought it was my OS X, because I've had weird errors ever since moving it back and forth to an external drive for Boot Camp, but he said another friend of his with a MacBook couldn't connect either.
Does OS X have a problem with 64-bit WEP networks, or is it a problem with 2WIRE 1000HWs? What do you think?

DV6 wireless network card upgrade ?

I just bought a DV6 LM199UA#ABC and i was wondering if the wireless network card could be upgraded and if so, could I puchase it from HP?

Which card do you have? HP laptops will ony work with very specific wireless cards. There is a "whitelist" in the BIOS which means you must use a card that was offered on the laptop when new or the laptop will refuse to boot. So to see what you can use we need your specific model and the type of card in the laptop already to see if there is anything better available.
