Can you cold boot an iMac?

I'm frozen trying to install lion so I want to shut down. How do I?

That will shut down your Mac.
It also may leave your Mac disk drive in a totally unusable state.
I hope you have a back up.

  • Can you dual boot lion with an older verion of Mac OS?

Can you dual boot Lion Os with and Older version of Mac Os (Snow Leopard?) So one can rum Power PC apps until they are upgraded?

You can dual boot if your machine originally came with an older OS version. No Mac can boot from an older version than the one it came with - notable exceptions are if the machine was built right around the time of the new OS release; in that case, it would depend on the machine and OS builds - it may or may not be possible.
So the important question here is: did yours come with Lion preinstalled? The answer is most likely: No. Or Snow Leopard? The answer would be: Yes.

  • Can you install Boot Camp on an SD Card?

Rather than installing your Boot Camp partition on your Mac's internal drive, can you install it on an SD Card instead? That way you could put the SD Card into any Mac, and boot into Windows.

I too would like to install a bootcamp partition on an SD card so that I will not loose a huge chuck of my internal drive to Windows, a system I need very rarely (this is important for all users of SSHDs, where internal storage space is precious).
If it is not possible to create a bootcamp partition on an external SD card, how about installing Lion first on that SD card, booting from the SD card, and then creating the bootcamp partition on that card. I would think that Lion's disk utility would consider the SD card as the internal disk, and so should make the partition and allow the installation. Large fast SD cards are not cheap, but I would think that this would be an option for those of us with limited internal storage space.
    Has anybody tried this option?

  • Can you add memory to iMac 6.1?

Can you add memory to an iMac 6.1 (currently has 1 GB) and an MacBook Air (currently has 2GB) - 11 inch late 2010?

    Yes,
Your year and model iMac can take 4 GBs max., but that model will only recognize only about 3.2-3.4 GBs of the total 4 GBs.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

  • Can you reverse boot camping your device?

    Hi there,
I am thinking of dual booting my device to windows 8 for university and I would like to know if it is possible to reverse the dual boot if I am not entirely happy with it?
Can you entirely delete windows 8 off the mac or does it stay on there?
    Thanks.

Bootcamp is (at least was when I tried it) only a partitionning tool. So if you're tired of your other os, you'll be able to recover wasted space whenever you want.
If you don't need windows for hard work, you may consider virtualisation.

  • Can you run Boot Camp and Fusion at the same time?

    Hi,
I had boot camp installed on my mac pro and loved it. I decided to get greedy and install Fusion using the boot camp partition. The Fusion install went ok but then Microsoft started to get fussy. Every time I would do something on Fusion it would ask me to "Re-activate Windows" when I logged into boot camp. Maybe if I saw Fusion fully working I wouldn't want to run boot camp any more but I think I want to have the option to run either. Right now I only have 1 gig real memory on my mac pro and Fusion seems a little slow compared to native boot camp. Can I run both boot camp and fusion without having to buy two native copies of Windows XP pro? I don't want a "sensible" answer, I want an answer that takes into account how Microsoft treats this re-activation situation.
I guess Leopard might make this all obsolete, but until then .....
    ... Flash Gordon

You need to make sure to install VMware Tools into your virtual machine (while booted into Windows via Fusion). Once you do this you shouldn't have to continually activate Windows when going back and forth from Boot Camp to Fusion. I've seen this discussed over on the VMware Fusion discussion boards, so you may want to look there for more details.
Also, if Windows starts telling you it's been activated too many times, you can call Microsoft and they'll give you an alternate activation key. The phone number is listed on the Windows error screen. I had to do it and they were very accommodating. I just told them I was running Windows in a virtual machine, and there were almost no questions asked.
You don't need to buy 2 copies of Windows to run both Boot Camp and VMFusion.

  • Can you dual-boot arch linux with Windows 7 ?

Here is my current dilemna; I have Windows still on my netbook for the only reason that I use it for gaming .
Other than that I have Linux Mint dual-booted with it .
Now my question is, can I just instruct arch to install into the already existing linux partition, formatting it and making it it's home, or do I have to delete it, thus rendering my computer inoperable until I successfully dualboot arch with it ? o_O
Or should I take a different approach altogether, and triple boot my netbook with arch, mint, and windows, and then from there delete the mint partition and allocate the free space accordingly using easeus partition master (another reason I still have windows) ?
    Please help . D:
PS. I HATE Windows but only kept it because apparently not everyone shares the Linux view of technology . >.>

if youre happy with your partition layout u can just install arch ofc.
while installing you will be prompted to select mount points and create filesystems ( you can skip the partition step )
select your current / partition for, well, /
    and /home for.. /home.
the installer will then create new filesystems there (formatting those partitions) and set mountpoints

  • HT201335 Can you Airplay Mirror from iMac to Apple TV?

I want to play a DVD on my iMac and airplay mirror to my Apple TV. Is this possible?

If you have a newer Mac yes, I don't remember the cutoff date but I think it's mid 2011.
If yours is older than that there's a program called Airparrot you can download that will let older Macs do Airplay. For me it worked great and it's only $10. It has a 20 minute trial so you can make sure it works before you buy it.

  • ?can you do hdmi into iMac as a display using an adapter?

i have a 21.5-inch, Late 2009 imac, and want to try to use it as a display for hdmi connected devices like xbox etc., is there some kind of hdmi adapter to then input to the iMac?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Only Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and Thunderbolt iMacs can be used as an external screen, so you can't use your Mac as a screen.
Also, you can only turn your iMac onto an external display through Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort, not HDMI. There's a special adapter to use the iMac as a screen for a PlayStation or Xbox, but it only works with 27-inch iMacs > http://www.kanexlive.com/XD

  • Can you get a customized iMac from one of the retail stores?

I wanted to know if it was possible to get a customized iMac from one of the Apple retail stores or Apple affiliated retail stores ( www.yescomputers.com for example )?
The reason I am asking is because the ONLY problem I have with Apple is their shipping. They seem to always use FedEx when shipping to me and FedEx, SOMEHOW, is extremely terrible at shipping products to my address. UPS is fine but FedEx just can not figure it out.
If it is not possible I think the base model 27-inch: 2.66GHz might be okay. I would just like to know either way.

As far as I'm aware, Apple do not sell customised/configure-to-order Macs in their Apple Retail Stores.
If you want to configure your Mac, you have to order it online from the Store.Apple.com website.

  • Can you purchase memory for iMac intel 2008

I want to add memory to my iMac (20 inch Early 2008) but apple store online says no memory available for this model. Is that it? Do I have to purchase a new computer to get more memory?

You will find memory modules for your computer at OWC and DataMem for less than Apple charges for memory. You don't have to buy a new computer for more memory. You can install:
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMs
The largest module you can install is 4 GBs.

  • Can you clean inside an iMac G5?

Yesterday I was looking at the back of my iMac, connecting a firewire cable, and I noticed that there was quite a bit of dust and stuff around that little air intake. I easily wiped it off, but it made me wonder - how dusty is it inside?
I can easily remove the back panel and have acess to all the fan areas, and other places where there might be also of dust, though I've never had the back panel off before.
So, do these things have a tendency to get very dusty inside, and if so, should I open it up and clean it? Or is it not worth the trouble?
    Thanks,
    John

If you have the iSight version, Apple does not recommend you to open it as I was told by an Apple employee in live chat. I had asked if I coud open it and dust it off, like every other computers I've ever owned, but was told not to. This model has no DIY part replacement program, and should only be opened by Apple representatives.
Again, if you have the iSight version, you should not open it as this could void your warranty or AppleCare program.

  • Can you pair with an iMac and an iPad at the same time?

If you have an iMac and an iPad, is it possible to pair the same Apple Wireless Keyboard with both of them, rather than having to buy two Wireless Keyboards?

I've kind of found an answer to my question, but I'm not totally satisfied. Basically, yes, you can use one Apple Wireless Keyboard with an iMac and iPad, but obviously not at the same time.
To switch the Apple Wireless Keyboard over from working with the iMac to working with the iPad, you first have to "Disconnect" the keyboard in System Preferences > Bluetooth. This frees up the keyboard, making it available for the iPad to access.

  • Can you use the new iMac with FCS.

This is one of those a friend of a friend of a friend told me this.  His friend, who shoots video that's shown on a local access channel, just bought the latest iMac.  I don't know what this person's set up is or what kind of equipment is, but he claims that he might have to upgrade his cameras because he can't import the footage.  I'm interested in investing in the new iMac but hesitate because I do a lot of amateur video work (weddings, birthday parties, etc.)  Anyone heard anything about this?  By the way, I use a two year old HD Sony video camera and use FCS 7.  All video is stored on an external hard drive.

The current 27" iMac's with Thunderbolt will run the whole suite of Final Cut Studio apps just fine.  The catch will be your external Scratch Drive.  Until Thunderbolt drives ship in a couple of months, you're stuck with FW800, which barely cuts it for serious HD work.  Thunderbolt will change that.
One option is to get the configuration that has both an SSD and a 1TB 7200rpm HDD drives in it.  The SSD would be your OS drive, the HDD your Scratch Drive.  That would work fine.
As for professionals, I teach them, guys from huge cable news networks, who've been using FCP since v.1.  I'm amazed how many of them walk away even after the 1st day of class with whole new workflows.  You never stop learning in any profession.  The day you do, you're out dated.
The model of Mac you use has nothing to do with your ability to import footage.  The version of FCP you use CAN affect that a great deal, though.
Specifically what make/model camera do you plan to be using for this work?  BTW, weddings and events are a very profitable niche profession.  I have friends who make good livings for years doing only that.
