Can you dual boot Windows XP on the current Mac Pro?

I'm currently interested in purchasing a new Mac Pro but want to dual boot Windows XP to play older games. Is this possible with the current Mac Pro's software and hardware?

The current version of OS X only allows bootcamp to be used with Windows 7 and above.  You would have to have a version of Snowleopard to install XP in bootcamp.
You "could" use a 3rd party program like VMWare Fusion, or Parallels desktop to install an XP virtual machine.  There was also a free Virtual Machine program for Mac, but the name escapes me.

  • Can you have multiple users working off the same Mac pro at the same time with multiple monitors but doing different things?

I'm buying desktops for a start up company and was wondering if I could purchase a single Mac Pro and run multiple monitors to allow multiple users to work on the computer at the same time. These users would be doing different tasks but I would hope to accomplish that on a single desktop. I know that screen sharing is possible but with only one user controlling both of the screens. Thanks in advance, sorry for my apple ignorance!

A lot of companies are buying or leasing laptops to be used at the office by day, and carried home at night.
Some companies are doing "Bring your own device". Bring a device to receive email -- computer/smartphone/tablet you already have, or have an allowance to buy one for your use.
If Capital is short (and when is it not) leasing computers, to be turned in a few years, can be a huge savings because the cost is expensed as incurred. The alternative is laying out cash today, but not being able to expense the cost this year. Instead, the computer expense must be recovered over their useful life (often five years) through depreciation.

  • Can you dual boot lion with an older verion of Mac OS?

Can you dual boot Lion Os with and Older version of Mac Os (Snow Leopard?) So one can rum Power PC apps until they are upgraded?

You can dual boot if your machine originally came with an older OS version. No Mac can boot from an older version than the one it came with - notable exceptions are if the machine was built right around the time of the new OS release; in that case, it would depend on the machine and OS builds - it may or may not be possible.
So the important question here is: did yours come with Lion preinstalled? The answer is most likely: No. Or Snow Leopard? The answer would be: Yes.

  • Dual boot Tiger on SL vs Lion Mac Pro?

My 2004 Power Mac G5 (running Tiger) is getting old and cranky (frequent fan cycling, failed FW800 port, etc.). It still works but I know a replacement is in the near future. The problem is I have one critical program that runs properly only in Tiger. (Take my word for it.)
    My questions:
    1. If I were to buy a new Mac Pro today (with Snow Leopard), I understand that I could create a dual boot Mac Pro with Tiger on a partitioned or dedicated drive (internal or external). Assuming this is true, are there any issues of which I should be aware when creating a dual boot Tiger Mac on a Snow Leopard machine?
    2. Is there a good reason to believe that a Lion-equipped Mac Pro (presumed to be shipping later this year) will (or will not) support dual booting with a Tiger drive or partition? I realize we can't know for sure until these machines come out, but perhaps someone has some insights here.
Ultimately my question is, "For the purposes of creating a dual boot Mac with Tiger, should I buy the current Mac Pro with Snow Leopard now (while it is still available) or will it be safe to wait until the new Mac Pros (with Lion) come out?"

you would need to find an earlier MacPro1,1 or 2,1 from 2006-7 to be able to boot Tiger. Minimum builds means new hardware will not boot from older versions of OS X.
    Mac OS X build
You can find those Mac Pros for under $1K and they can run 10.4.7 thru 10.7.
Some even upgrade them with newest graphics card but then that limits it to 10.6.5+ and the old cards are dying and hard to find and don't really support 10.6.8 and beyond.
A new Mac before Lion ships makes sense unless you want to wait to see if there is a new Mac Pro in the pipeline but that would mean your software would need to run under 10.7 and could pose problems to even CS4/5 and other popular apps.
Too bad you can run 10.4 as if it was "Classic OS" the way OS 9 use to be, or in a standard VM and run other versions of OS X too.
    Pick up a spare G5.

  • How do you dual boot Windows XP on a Mac?

I'd like to know the best way to use dual-booting to run both Windows XP and Mac OS X on my G4 PowerPC machine. First of all, is this even possible with a PowerPC? I don't know if it only works with Intel-based Macs or what... I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to a good, beginners tutorial on dual booting. I have the Windows XP installation disc, a PC, and my Mac.

I won't need to install the Windows XP operating system, will I?
From the website Niel linked: "Q [kju:] emulator is a feature packed Cocoa port of QEMU: Run Linux, Windows, and other systems on your Mac. " Note it says "Run Windows", it doesn't say run Windows programs. I have zero experience in this but my reading of that is that you have to have another OS to install. Q just lets the Mac pretend to be a PC without software. If you want to run a Windows game you have to install Q, then Windows, then the game.
In general emulation is often slow. You're talking about games. If you mean video style games then those can be very demanding I would not expect too much of this kind of setup. Again in the link somebody mentions running it on a G4 and it is slow.

  • Can you dual-boot arch linux with Windows 7 ?

Here is my current dilemna; I have Windows still on my netbook for the only reason that I use it for gaming .
Other than that I have Linux Mint dual-booted with it .
Now my question is, can I just instruct arch to install into the already existing linux partition, formatting it and making it it's home, or do I have to delete it, thus rendering my computer inoperable until I successfully dualboot arch with it ? o_O
Or should I take a different approach altogether, and triple boot my netbook with arch, mint, and windows, and then from there delete the mint partition and allocate the free space accordingly using easeus partition master (another reason I still have windows) ?
    Please help . D:
PS. I HATE Windows but only kept it because apparently not everyone shares the Linux view of technology . >.>

if youre happy with your partition layout u can just install arch ofc.
while installing you will be prompted to select mount points and create filesystems ( you can skip the partition step )
select your current / partition for, well, /
    and /home for.. /home.
the installer will then create new filesystems there (formatting those partitions) and set mountpoints

  • How can I dual boot Windows 7 on a MBR disk and Windows 8 on GPT Disk with UEFI BIOS

I have recently build a computer. I bought a Seagate 3TB HDD which I planned to install Windows 8.1 Pro on and I also bought another Seagate 1TB HDD which I planned to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I wanted to dual boot the two systems.

  • Can I dual boot Windows Thin PC on my Windows 7?

    Hi
I would like to try the Windows Thin PC, can I install it on my Windows 7 and dual boot, if I need it I logon to Thin PC.
    KW - CNE,MCSE,VCP5

    Hi KANE,
Windows Thin PC is a locked-down version of Windows 7. As a result, it will be able to run on any device that is capable of running Windows 7.
Since I have no Windows Thin PC to take a test. An at least advantage of using existing PCs as thin clients is that you can continue to use the hard disk for data that has been stored there.
Furthermore, You could try if the thin client OS of choice can be installed as a dual boot option.

  • Can't dual boot windows 7 with windows 8 on Thinkpad edge S430

I am desperately trying to install windows 7 from USB.
I need it to dual boot with windows 8.
    I obtained a windows 7 iso from MSDNAA: (en_windows_7_professional_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_676939.iso)
I made a bootable UEFI USB with rufus on a Sandisk U3 Cruzer (8GB)
Now in BIOS I disabled secure boot  but I can't select my USB, I can select it, press enter, the screen flickers but jumps back to the first entry in the boot list.
The USB is displayed without "UEFI:" in front.
Selecting "legacy" in boot mode works but I can't install windows 7, the setup shows al the partitions but says: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is not of the GPT partition style".
    That's it, I just can't install windows 7...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Ok got it working:
a U3 Cruzer is NOT a good bootable USB!
csm should be enabled in BIOS.
secure boot should be DISABLED in BIOS.
(My problem was csm and the bad USB)

I am a new Mac user and i am considering downloading pages. On my PC i use Microsoft word and i was wondering if anyone knew if i transferred these files onto my Mac could i open them in Pages?
    Thanks

    Jo,
Give it a try. It should work. That's what the free iWork trial period is for. Not sure if the Mac App Store has a free trial, so indeed, you'll want to look for the normal download.

  • Can you share a hard drive with the current airport extreme

    Hey all!
I read that you can share USB drives with the new airport extreme. Can you do that with the current ones?
    Thanks,
    B

Massi65, Welcome to the discussion area!
You really should start a new thread since your question is about the new square AEBS and the thread started with a question about the previous AEBS.
With either AEBS you could wirelessly gain access to a hard drive by one of these 3 methods:
Use a hard drive with wireless networking capabilities. The drive would connect to the wireless network like any other wireless client.
Use a hard drive with an Ethernet interface. Connect the drive to the AEBS's LAN port.
Connect a hard drive via FireWire or USB to another Mac and then share the drive from that Mac.
The new square AEBS offers a new possibility. You can connect a USB drive directly to the new AEBS and share it to devices connected to the AEBS's network.
    What performance could I expect?
No one can answer this directly since no one has any of these devices to try.

  • Two Boot Camps installs on the same Mac Pro?

Is it possible to install two Boot Camps on two different internal drives on a Mac Pro? Can I rename the Boot Camps disks to, say, BOOTCAMPXP and BOOTCAMP7? Will this confuse the startup disk system preference in OS X or the Boot Camp control panel in XP and Windows 7?
I would really appreciate any help here.
    Steve

    Hi,
first: be sure to have/make a backup of what you have now.
second: have a look at the instructions here http://www.harbar.net/articles/mbptb.aspx
The order you need to do the installation/partition is this:
Mac OSX, Win XP (instead of Vista), W7 (instead of Windows 2008 server) (as used in the linked article).
    Good luck

  • Can I use a Windows internal HDD on my Mac Pro? (No Bootcamp)

Hey, I have a mac pro early 2008 I believe and it has a 500gb hdd with osx installed not sure which version. Anyways, I ordered a 1tb hdd and I was wondering if I could just install it in the primary hdd slot and install windows on it straight up with no bootcamp or anything. Would that work, just booting and installing a new hdd with windows on my mac pro? If so what else would I need to know to get the best performance, and if it is possible could I still switch to my second hdd that'srunning ios and is also installed and use it as a mac when I want? Please let me know, looking to install soon.

For that you need the Boot Camp control panel in Windows.
If you want NTFS (but not as startup disk option) then buy Paragon's - it has its own startup disk but often does not see the Windows hdd. I blame some of it on Apple's proprietary one-off EFI implementation which is different from the UEFI Intel, Microsfosft and others have used.
Use the Option and try BootChamp (never used it myself).
Of course if OS X isn't present it seems to immediately boot Windows for me.
you should be able to find Boot Camp 3.x or above to download and install inside Windows.

  • How do you connect 3 HDMI monitors to the new Mac Pro running Maverics. HDMI to thunderbolt adaptors only support 2 displays. The fine print in Apple docs HT 5918 indicate  the Mac Pro will only support 2 HDMIs.  Anyone found a workaround?

I am trying to connect 3 HDMI displays to a Mac Pro.  I am using a HDMI to thunderbolt adaptor and can only get 2 of the 3 displays to work.
Does anyone know of a work around.
Is there a systems configuration varaible for type of display?

USB video adapters can severely limit graphics performance.  Use ACTIVE HDMI adapters instead.
