Can you fix the whirring hard drive noises that are heard on the Classic?

I'm aware that hearing the noises when selecting a playlist or song or browsing is normal, but to be honest, it can be a little irritating. I got my Classic for Christmas, and I have no other issues with it (no white screens, troubles calling up a song, or charging/syncing difficulties - nothing). The noises have been present since I first started using the iPod. Is there any way I can fix the whirring without buying a new hard drive?
Thank you!

It's easy, but not that easy.  You need to copy all the info from the drive currently in the mac to the new  one before you install the new SSD.  You can do          this by downloading cloning software (I use CarbonCopyCloner because it's free)
Not to be picky but CCC is donationware, if you use it because of its quality you should send a little bit of money in appreciation, and as a bonus you get to turn the banner off.

  • Can you use a external hard drive to keep all your iTunes info on it

Can you use a external hard drive to keep all your iTunes info on it

    Yes.
The easiest way is to copy the whole iTunes folder out to the external drive, then press and hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes. Keep holding shift until asked to "Create or choose a library". Choose the library on the external drive.

Can you use an external hard drive to back up my movies in iTunes but still be able to access them or is there a device so I don't have to use a pc ??

You can store them on a separate hard drive, you don't need to keep them on your laptop's hard drive. On your computer's iTunes on the Advanced tab in Edit > Preferences there is a 'copy files to iTunes media file when adding to library' tickbox - if you untick that, you should be able to copy the films to a separate drive and add them back to your iTunes library (File > Add To Library) and it should then point to them on that separate drive and not copy them to your hard drive. When you are happy that it is what is happening and that they are safely on your external drive you can delete the films from your laptop's hard drive.
If you plug the external drive into a different USB port next time (assuming that your laptop has more than one) then it might get a different drive letter, so you might need to always use it with the same port.

Can you fix , the fact that If you leave the firefox UPDATE window open for a long period (say 20 minutes in the background), then close all other windows, then choose to download update, it uses this extra time to estimate the download? (Mine said, 12 Hours to start with, but took under 2 minutes!)
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often
== When you install update to 3.6.4 (Possibly for every update?)

The download should happen in the background (before you get an update window). I wonder why that didn't happen for you...\
Did you manually check for updates?

  • Can you share a USB hard drive over the network through an Airport Express?

After asking a few individuals at my local Apple Store, I have been consistantly told that I can plug in a usb hard drive into the bottom of my airport express and share it over the network.
However, after making sure my airport express has the latest firmware (6.3) and even donwloading and installing the airport disk utility I still am not having any luck getting my HFS (journaled) usb 2.0 hard drive to be visible on the network.
I have also noticed that when following the instructions on this apple support document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirportUtility/5.1/en/ap2108.html) that when I get to step 3, the option to click disks is grayed out. I assume this supports my theory that the airport express won't share hard drives, can anyone confirm?
Am I doing something wrong? Or were the reps at my store mistaken and the only hardware that can share a hard drive is the airport extreme not express?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Continuing my investigation I started to come to the conclusion you just mentioned. I am surprised none of the staff at my store realized this. However, at least I know now.
The basis for me looking to this is... With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

Here are the specs for your HP TouchSmart 320-1130a Desktop Computer. No, you can't install a second hard drive in this computer. The HP TouchSmart and All-in-One computers have more in common with laptops than they do with desktops.

More than likely this is NOT possible since most Belkin routers are NOT compatible with Apple's WDS.
However if you are using a Belkin F5D7230-4 or F5D7231 you might be able to get it to work. You need to configure the Belkin and the AirPort Express (AX) to connect wirelessly using WDS. Only then is the AX's Ethernet port enabled.

  • Why am I not able to type into my pdf files. Why is the cursor only appearing at he areas where there in no typing? I believe I know who's doing this, but can you fix the problem for me please?

I cannot type into one of my pdf files. The cursor only appears where there is no typing. I believe there is foul play going on on my computer, Can you fix this problem?

    Hi Donna,
Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this mystery! I hope it's not foul play.
You say the problem is with just one of your PDF files? What version of Acrobat/Reader are you using? If you're in Reader, you're limited to commenting/annotating the PDF (you can't edit text with Reader, so you wouldn't be able to select text that's in the PDF already).
Please let me know what program/tools you're using and we can take it from there.
    Best,

  • Can you take your main Hard Drive from a PC and put it in the Mac Pro?

Can I take my PC's 120GB hard drive that already has Windows XP on it and put it in one of the hard drive slots in the Mac Pro and have a dual boot system that way? Or is there any way I can do that?
    Thanks

    Hi there.
Not only reactivating is to consider, but Windows tends to
act strange if too many hardware parts change (and too many
    drivers are to be installed).
Especially with SATA-Drivers there are almost always difficulties, because Win XP itself doesn't know about SATA (because its too 'old').
Since I have use PCs for almost 18 years I would always recommend a fresh install, when things like Mainboards are changed.

  • In replacing a hard drive on a Mac book circa 2006, can you put too much hard drive space in and cause overheating? I've had 2 hard drives fail after installation in the past 3 weeks.

I recently had my Mac book circa 2006 updated to OS Lion and in the process was told I needed a new hard drive. I just replaced my original hard drive 9 months ago and was told at that time not to put too large a hard drive on my laptop or it could overheat. Now I have gone through 2 hard drives in the past 3 weeks since updating to Lion both of which were a terabyte in size. The authorized repair shop that put both failed hard drives in insists that the size of the hard drive does not cause problems in the Mac book but I am wondering why 2 failed in such a short time when the smaller hard drive lasted. It was working when I took it in for the updates but their diagnotic test showed that the first replacement HD was failing. I'm not sure what to think now.

Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly
    Yes.

  • What can be causing 2007 macbook hard drive noise?

Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then partition and format the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-5-SATA-HDD-HARD-DRIVE-EXTERNAL-ENCLOSURE-CASE-BOX-/120 636286623?pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item1c167ba69f

  • Can I partition my external hard drive so that one partition is for Time Machine and the other is to install Windows with Boot Camp?

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I currently use just for Time Machine backups.  Is it possible for me to go into Disk Utility and create a new partition on the drive so that I may install Windows 7 via Boot Camp? Or since I am already using it for Time Machine do I have to keep it only for Time Machine?

You must install Boot Camp in your internal drive because Windows can't be installed in an external disk and Boot Camp can't do that

  • Can you share an external hard drive over a network when your Apple Airport Extreme is in bridge mode?

Hello, is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?  I can't use my AE as my main router at the moment but still want to be able to use the hard drive on the network, and the router I am using isn't capable of adding an external hard drive.  I use Windows 7 and the other router is a Netgear.  I have searched the communities and have not come across an answer to this question.  I have tried several configurations within windows to try and see the hard drive but none have worked.  I can see the hard drive when I run Airport utlities, but it cannot be seen on the network.  Thanks to anyone who can help!

I think there is some confusion in this thread..
If you are sharing on a local LAN port forwarding is not required.
is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?
Answer is yes.. no port forwarding, mapping whatever term is used.. is needed. Port mapping is required when you cross over a NAT router.. as long as all the devices are inside a single LAN.. then no port mapping.
I assign to my Airport Extreme, do I do so with the settings of:
    Service: SMB
    Type: TCP
    Server IP: xx.x.x.x
    Port Start: 445
    Port End: 445
This would not work even from WAN.. SMB is blocked by all responsible ISP.. there is simply too many unprotected windows machines out there. If they allowed SMB .. the world would be flooded with hijacked bots. And stolen data like bank accounts. SMB is not a secure protocol.
But this is not necessary on a LAN.
The problem can be Mavericks which does a terrible job presenting network drives.. The usual recommendations are to use AFP or force the connection to CIFS (ie SMB1 not 2).
If you use airport,, then use AFP.
In finder.. Go, Connect to server.
AFP://AEname or AEIPaddress. (replace with the network name of the AE or its actual IP address).
When asked for password.. type public if you did not change it or use whatever password you put.
Store the password in the keychain.

  • Can you add a second hard drive

Just wondering. what is the exact mobo used in the imac 20inch
is there an extra sata port. would like to add an extension to the ports on the back and be able to add a second hard drive at the speeds that sata allows

No, you can't add another hard drive. There isn't an extra SATA port because the Apple Engineers had to squeeze everything in as close as possible to make the iMac this small and thin. The only user-serviceable/upgradeable part of the iMac is the Memory. For other changes, an Apple Authorized Service Provider has to open up your computer. Another alternative could be a USB 2.0 or FireWire External Hard drive, which would work at up to 500 Mbits/sec.
