Can you force default answer to Filevault's  "reclaim Y/N"?

When I reboot my powerbook it often prompts if I want to reclaim disk space from FileVault.
Fine and nice, but it can take quite some time from when I clicked on Restart and sometimes I have walked off and left the machine only to return later and find it stuck on this Reclaim space Y/N dialog.
Is there any way to force a Yes or No answer after a short timeout?

Roger,
I do not know of a way to force a Yes or No answer, but the way I see it this feature is for your protection.
It is important for you to know and control when and if FileVault is reclaiming disk space. If you force the computer to restart while disk space is being reclaimed, data loss can occur. The same is true if power is lost during the process.
Only you know when these conditions are not likely to occur.
As good as FileVault is in protecting your sensitive data, it also presents the danger of locking up your files in an irretrievable ball of one's and zero's. Complete Backups are critical.
The cautions and warnings regarding the use of FileVault are prominent in any of the Apple Knowledge Base articles referring to the use of FileVault. If a user is unfamiliar with any aspect of FileVault, it should not in my opinion be activated. An Unencrypted Look at FileVault, by François Joseph de Kermadec is an excellent discussion of the features, pitfalls, and cautions regarding Filevault. Although the article discusses Panther and is dated 12/19/2003, the concepts as they apply Tiger have not changed.
If I had a portable computer, I would consider the use of FileVault but since I do not, an Encrypted Disk Image and individual user accounts serve my purposes for desktop security.

  • Can you force a value into a read-only numeric data member?

I have code that will force a value into a numeric data member. Unfortunately the numeric data member in question is read-only. Can you force a value into a read-only numeric data member?

    Andre,
I think you should get together with the other engineers there at NI. I spoke to one on the phone yesterday and he told me that the read-only aspect relates to writing between the database and PLC. I'm trying to write to the database and he told me that I could do it.

  • Can you force a link inside a .pdf to open the "linked to" document in a new window?

When I have a link inside my .pdf document - linking to another .pdf document or to a Word document - how can I force the linked-to document to open in a new window?
I have a web site (business internal, so unfortunately I cannot point to it).  My HTML menu has links to .pdf documents - no problem.  However, once I open those .pdfs, they contain links to other .pdfs and to Word documents.  Clicking on these links, which reside inside my .pdfs, opens the "linked-to" docs in the same page.  How can I force them to open in a brand new frame?
All of my .pdfs were originally created in Word, and in the Word versions, the links DO open into new frames.  I am not sure why, when I convert them to .pdfs, they lose this feature.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi Magenta,
Would you mind reposting this question over on the Acrobat boards?  You've posted in the AIR forum and you'll have better luck with this over there.

  • HT1677 Where can you set default in Safari to view as web page instead of Mobile Version?

Where can you set the default setting in Safari to open page as web page instead of Mobile Version on iPad running iOS6.01?

And, to make it even more fun, sometimes a website changes how it deals with Safari Mobile. A website that treated it like a desktop browser suddenly starts treating it like a cell phone. Just to mess with you. Or push an app.
    Best of luck.

  • Can you force HTTPService to go to server instead of looking in cache?

I think I've found out the reason my Flex/php/mySQL database test app isn't working.  I used the wizard to generate the .php service code to get at the mySQL database and am using the HTTPService to FindAll records, Delete a record and the do a FindAll again.  My deleted record shows up again as not deleted (even thought phpMyAdmin confirms that it was indeed deleted), but when I empty my cache in IE 8 and then do the FindAll again, it works and the deleted record is gone.  Soooooo....how do I force my HTTPService .send request to always go to the server and not look in the cache
I am new to mySQL and to php, so don't assume I know anything when you post an answer.
Thanks very much in advance to any of you gurus who can help.

Append the date/time to the url to make it unique.

  • Can you control default length of JPEGs?

Quick question. When I import JPEGs or other still images into the timeline the default length of time is 10 seconds? I'm working a project with a large quantity of JPEGs. Can you alter this time length to, say, 4 seconds?
    If so, how?
    Thanks,
    Shanked

Yes, I had actually already tried to alter that setting, unsure if it would work. It didn't work. What was also of note was that the field had previously been entered as 12:12 as in "twelve seconds and twelve frames" and yet the timeline had been defaulting to 10:00 as in "ten seconds flat."
    Any explanation for this?
    Any alternative solutions?

  • When slides are updated within a MS Sharepoint slide library, how can you force an alert with the updated slide version going to users who have previous slide versions on their hard drive?

How can you hardcode/force that when a slide within a slide library (in Sharepoint 2010) is updated, that an alert is sent to the user who downloaded the slide to their hard drive so that they may replace the outdated slide with the recently
updated slide. There is a tic box option to set when downloading slides from a sharepoint slide library into power point that ensures alerts are sent when the presentation is opened allowing for replacement of the slide. But, it is an option. How can that
be hardcoded are forced on all slide library users who download slides from the shrepoint library into power point? Is there a workflow that can be written in Sharepoint or an option in power point to do this? Please advise. Thanks.

    Two things to check:
Add the network folder location as a trusted location in your Flash Global Security settings and then see if the videos will play.
If the first suggestion doesn't work, get in touch with your network admin dudes and find out if FLV files are disabled from working over the network from that location.  Many times unless a given file format is enabled on a network, the server assumes it's not desirable and won't serve it.

Figuired it out, just clicked on the messages in the app on the phone and you can change them!

  • When is Modbus.ini loaded and can you force to reload after?

To effectively complete the Modbus disable task with the modbus.ini file entry "SkipImmediatePoll=1" and a high poll-rate time and/or a poll value of false, I need to know when the modbus.ini settings are loaded, and whether I need to restart any process with modbus objects, modify any running modbus object, restart lookout....etc. Also, can I force a reload programmatically? (suggestions welcome)
    Ed

    Review/Clarification for all those interested.
I need a way to turn modbus device communication on and off within a running process, to avoid wasteful computer resources timing out on communication with disabled Modbus client devices.
So we can enable "skipimmediatePoll" for [Modbus_X] in the Modbus.ini file and then set a very long poll-rate on tag Modbus_X. This, so far is the best way to minimize the lag at process startup so that working devices get polled much sooner.
Why I ask if the Modbus.ini file is parsed whenever a Modbus object is modified, is to provide an easy method to turn the devices effectively on/off by just changing the poll-rate back to normal after editing the Modbus.ini file, all while the process remains running.
    Of course it would be
nice if I could force the Lookout.ini reload without restarting processes, then I could reload the .ini file and dynamically change the poll-rate while the process remains running, effectively switching the client communications on/off when necessary. Even better, I could programmatically edit the .ini file, reload it (somehow) and modify the poll-rate, all within a running process.
Basically, I need a way to reload modbus.ini settings without reloading a process. Alternatively, I could just load/unload a dummy process programmaticaly. I just need to verify the behavior of the modbus.ini file settings and existing/new modbus objects created/modified, knowing exactly when the settings get loaded for sure. For example, say I load a dummy process with no modbus objects in it. Will the .ini still reload? Will it affect modbus objects in already running processes whether the dummy process has or has no modbus objects within it?
Thanks All for your interest and particip
    ation.

  • Can you set default values for person/group picker fields? To current user?

    Two-part question/issue . . .
    Part 1:
In InfoPath 2013 in use with SharePoint 2013, how do you set a Default Value for Person/Group Picker fields? Other field types like Text Boxes have a Default Value section in the Data tab of Properties.  There doesn't appear to be any equivalent for
the Person/Group Picker field type in Properties.  I'd like to set a default person for a few fields in a form I've created.  Is this possible?
    Part 2:
The default user I want to set for one of those Person/Group fields is the "current user."  I want a user to log into our SharePoint 2013 intranet, load a new form for edit/creation, and have one of the Person/Group fields in that form to
automatically populate this particular user.  Is this possible?

    Hi Stephen,
You can auto populate your InfoPath farm with current user Name and all other property that you have in your User profile, you have couple of options.
First you can make a secondary connection in your InfoPath form with user profile and can use the UserProfileService.asmx and call the GetUserProfileByName method. Here is the steps you can follow.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/anneste/archive/2011/11/02/how-to-create-an-infopath-form-to-auto-populate-data-in-sharepoint-2010.aspx
Secondly you can use JQuery and SPServices ,
$().SPServices.SPGetCurrentUser function to populate the values with script to achieve the same in this case you no need to use InfoPath form just create simple text type column in SharePoint
list and auto populate it with getting the current user Name from User Profile here is the scripts

  • Can you set default email stationery?

  • Can you alter default values for Shape Layers?

Specifically, I want the default Trim Paths 'Trim Multiple Paths' set to 'Individually' and default Stroke Line Cap and Line Join set to 'Round Cap' and 'Round Join' respectively.
I know I can copy and paste these properties from elsewhere but I am asking about altering the defaults - perhaps in a preferences file? Thanks

No, there is no way to change the defaults. If you have a set of properties that you always like to use, save them as an animation preset.

  • Can you force ARD to ask permission before control/observing *AND* still be able to push updates/patches?

Is there a way to force ARD to ask permission before observing/controling a computer AND still be able to push updates/patches to the computer?
I know we can't be the only ones who have this dilemma so I'm hoping someone has a solution.
    ARD version 3.
OS 10.6.8 (ARD machine) and 10.6-10.7 client Macs
Each remotely monitored computer has an admin account that ARD uses to inventory and update the machines. Let's call it ADMIN. Of course each computer also has a local (non-admin) account let's call USER.
When USER is logged in, we'd like ARD to always ask permission before observing and/or controlling the computer. We found we can replicate this by removing the ADMIN login and password from the info tab of the computer in question as well as turning on the 'Any guest may request permission' setting. Unfortunately we found this also removes the ability of ARD to start a chat session with the computer - even with the chat option checked on in ARD settings (system preferences). To push updates/patches we have to put the ADMIN account information back into computer info tab.
Basically it boils down to giving the end user the privacy they would like (not being viewed without warning) while they're logged in vs. allowing the IT department to update the computers when necessary.
With the ADMIN login and password entered into the computer's info tab we're able to observe/control without warning. We changed the client settings for that computer via ARD to always request permission but this didn't work while the ADMIN login and password were still entered in the info tab. Once we removed the information we were prompted to ask permission but that's because we were essentially an unknown guest.
It appears to be an either/or situation right now. Either you give the user privacy and always ask permission or you give the IT department the rights to observe a machine and push updates. Because once we put the ADMIN information back into the info tab, we can observe without permission again.
When USER is logged in, always ask permission to control/observe. But still be able to push updates. If ADMIN is logged in or no one is logged in, don't ask to control/observe.
Has anyone found a workable solution for this question?

You can take a look at this website and it will give you the command to run that will control the Observe and Control options for the access mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370
    The command is:
    $
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -configure -users "THIS IS WHERE YOU PUT THE USERS YOU WANT TO HAVE ACCESS" -access -on -privs -ControlObserve -ObserveOnly -TextMessages

  • Can you change default text reader from TextEdit?

I use Bean, a great (and free) text editor, and would like to have it open automatically as my default text editor when I click on a text file, rather then TextEdit. Can that be set somewhere? Thanks.

If it were in Preference in addition to telling the system the application to use you would also have to tell which files you wish to make the change on. This way with File Information pane open, the system alreay knows where to make the change.
Beside the information about default application is maintained in the metadata for the file and not in preference for Finder. If you think about it that way, you can see that there is some logic to the way Apple does it.
You are welcome. Glad I could help. Thanks for the star.
