Can You Hear the Difference?

Seriously. I can hear the difference between 16 bit and 24 bit and 44.1 and 48kHz. I recorded the same acoustic guitar part through a Line6 PodXT Pro this evening at 96kHz and 48kHz, both at 24 bit - I can't hear it. I can crank it and of course I lose the objectivity (but it sounds good) and at low volumes I'm not hearing the voodoo that makes 96kHz so 'magical'.
When I record in 192kHz I get a Core Audio Overload. Go figure. But seriously, am I alone here or is this level of hearing for mastering engineers supreme? What do you record at, and if it's 96kHz or more, do you just pass it on at that rate to your mastering guys?

Hi The Black Room.
Here's the "skinny" in high sample rates,et al...:
1.Anyone CAN tell the difference between low and high sample rates.that is not difficult at all.The catch is that if you have source material that does NOT have frequencies above 22kHz (the limit of 44.1kHz sample rate recording) then you will absolutely not hear any difference at a higher sample rate. Why? Because there is no more information there,it is identical.
2.You have to be VERY careful when attempting to do listening tests. The first consideration to look at,is your MONITORING equipment. If you have equipment that is NOT capable of reproducing high frequencies, and I mean frequencies above 20kHz,there is NO POINT in playing back anything above 20kHz,because the reproduction equipment will NOT play it back. This includes mixers, amplifiers, speakers, monitor routing boxes,et al.
So,my friend,if you REALLY want to listen to differences in sample rates, you will have to make some effort in doing one of two things:
1.Go to a professional studio that has equipment capable of reproducing high frequencies.
OR
2.Purchase some test equipment such as a signal frequency generator that does output frequencies ABOVE 22kHz,plus an oscilloscope that can also "see" frequencies above 22kHz.also,you will need a sound source that is KNOWN to contain more than 22kHz of info.Your Logic Pro internal oscillator will not be good enough, and forget CDs.You will need to make a fresh recording of an acoustic instrument such as piano, violin,or the like.to do this, you will NEED a microphone capable of passing through it's circuitry Freqs. above 22kHz. (Neumanns can) and also a mic preamplifier capable of passing thru above 22kHz as well.Neve preamps can do this.
Electric guitars is a no-no,as they rarely go much above 15kHz.Acoustic guitar,maybe...the upper harmonics on an acoustic "might" show up,if they are loud enough.
Cheers

  • Can you hear the fans on iMac? (my new 2011 27'' i5 fans are constantly audible even from a distance)

I have the 2011 27'' Imac i5 and I can hear the fans all the time as of start. It's not super strong but clearly audible even from distance. istat shows normal fan speeds (1100/1300/1000 respectively) . The noise bothers me a lot especially in a silent room. The fans start to be audible immediately after switching on and get higher (+temperature rises significantly) under any easy activity .. like streaming a video from net.
Can you hear the fans on yours at all?

Do a SMC reset (maybe do it 2-3x) and if the problem persists as you have been advised call AppleCare.

    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • In ical, how can you tell the difference between a meeting invite and email?

When you send a meeting invite in ical, does the recipient receive a different icon in their inbox to differentiate from an email?

For service stock you can't tell the difference between a new iPad and a refurbished one. Both will come in a plain brown box with the same pattern in model numbers. If you mean between a refurbished one and one new at retail, then other than the obvious difference in packaging, I've read that the model number on refurbished units starts with the letter "F", though I've not confirmed that.

  • On the iPhone 5/5s, can you hear the other person properly when they are lying down?

When I use the iPhone 5s while lying down in bed, the other person is unable to hear me.  When someone who is using the iPhone 5s is lying down in bed, I cannot hear them.
Is this a known issue?  Has anyone else experienced this issue?  Does anyone know what causes this issue?  I actually used to have this same issue with the HTC One, and I was under the impression that it had to do with the accelerometer of smartphones.  I do not know of any other difference between smart phones and normal phones.
It's rather annoying, such a basic feature of a PHONE product to be able to talk and hear clearly.  Major fail, Apple.  For this alone, I may consider switching to another phone.
I have found other comments from iPhone 5 users who have the same issue:  http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/11/29/iphone-5-review/
    MICROPHONE
I don’t know if it’s because I have big hands or what, but there many times when people on the other end of the phone can’t understand a thing I’m saying. Specifically, any time I lay down flat on my back, the iPhone 5′s microphones seem to go especially bad. A few times, it’s gotten so bad that the people on the other end of the line hung up because they couldn’t deal with it.

Please Apple.  Fix this significant bug/defect in your product in your next software update.  I know this is a software issue probably related to the Accelerometer detecting that the phone is not upright and then turning off the receiver.  Not sure why you would even want to do that.
It is ridiculous that the iPhone cannot perform the most BASIC function of voice calls.  After all, that is what you buy the phone for... the texting, internet, applications are all bonus.  Phones are used while lying down, upside down, lying on the side, etc.  You are basically hurting yourself and your customer base with this significant design flaw.  Think about all the couples talking to their significant others when they're lying in bed first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening they are long distance.  Think about hospital patients who want to speak with their families.  Think about the homeless on the streets with their iPhones lying down calling people to give them money (or not...).
Anyway, you get my point.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix it.  I only recently changed from being an Android user to an iPhone user... this is seriously my biggest gripe with your product.

S both of us already told you there is no difference between the two. So, it is upto you to decide - whether you want to use count(*) or count(1).
    It hardly matters.
After all it consumes the same resource and perform the same task.
    So, It is your choice.

  • Pro vs. Air:  Can you translate the differences into user terms vs tech specs?

    Hi,
I have a MBP, bought in '06, that is dying a slow death (crashing constantly).  I'm not up on what the latest spec's mean in terms of USER EXPERIENCE.  Apple doesn't seem to know how to market to me--no product comparisons (in direct user experience vs. tech spec's), no analogies, no examples of how new MBPs and Airs differ or what their targeted user profile really is.
Can anyone provide some reasons for their choice of a new Pro or Air?  Beyond the obvious:  Air is lighter (what is sacrificed?).
Many thanks for your personal comparison/experience.

As long as you are only doing light photoshop and video editing an air should be fine, however check the tech requirements of the software you plan to use before purchasing a mac.  You don't want a mac that only meets the minimum requiremnents to run the software.
One point of confusion for me is the optical drive.  How does an Air user view DVDs and download CDs (music)?

  • Sound quality: If you want to hear the difference between higher and lower bit rates

Have you ever wondered about the difference in the sound quality of music at different bit-rates? Can you hear the difference?
If you listen to 64kbps and 28kbps (either wma or mp3), you'll hear the great difference. However, if you listen to 28kbps and 92kbps (either wma or mp3), you'll find that there is little or no difference (to me, that is).
    collegeboy wrote:
We all know that wma 28kbps sounds just as good as wma 320kb
    ps.
the reason i and you go higher than 28 is because where able to. you can deny all you want.
If you want to experience better sound quality at higher bit-rates, the best thing to do is to listen to the music at a quiet place. This may sound like lame advise, but it really works. Try 320kbps for the best results. You'll be able to hear minor details you never had before.

    SSR wrote:
Wayyyyyy back when I first started encoding MP3s I was using 28 with an inferior encoder. At the time I couldn't spot the difference, but now the difference is stark. Particular types of music (and more specifically instruments and combinations) do emphasise it though.
Actually, you cannot hear the difference when the background noise is loud, or example, public transport. I suggest that one uses a noise cancellation headset. $$$

  • Can barely hear the results in SpaceDesigner when used as Sidechain??

Hey guys I have a question, when I slap a Space Designer in an Aux channel and use it as a send effect to a track why is it that I can hardly hear the difference? But when I put a compressor on the Aux channel right after the Space Designer I can then hear the difference?
So ya. I'm sure something is not right, I shouldn't have to put a compressor everytime i wanna use a Reverb....right??

What might be going wrong is if you also set space designer to an amount of 'dry' signal (upper right 1/4 circular fader). Normally, if you set the amount of reverb in SD to -10 dB and the dry amount to -∞ dB, and the send level between -10 and 0, you'll get a noticeable amount of reverb.
So there are three ways to increase the amount of reverb: increasing the send level, increasing the ampount of 'wet' in SD, or upping the fader on the bus itself. I tend to use that initially, as it keeps the reverbs proportional when multiple tracks send to it. The 'wet' fader in SD basically does the same, but I like to park that around -6dB and balance it by using the AUX fader and of course the different send levels.
O, and another tip: listen to reverb levels thru speakers, not thru headphones. It can sound okay via headphones, but then the monitors can reveal you are actually drowning things in reverb. I treat it as a spice: you should only notice it when it is gone, it should (generally) not dominate the mix.
    hope this enlightens a little,
    regards, Erik.

  • How do you tell the difference between a genuine USB to Lightning cable? I spoke to two different operators at Apple Support. One said that it has Designed in California Made in China and the serial number on it, and the other operator said it didn't

How can you tell the difference between a genuine Apple lead and the cheap, or sometimes not so cheap imitations? I spoke with two people at Apple Support - one said that it has Designed in California Made in China and the serial number stamped on it, and the other said it didn't. Come on guys, how are we supposed to tell if you can't? I'd really like to know how to identify my lead amongst my daughter's gazillion fakes?

All my cables are genuine either with the devices or from Apple retail Store I have never found a serial number on any regardless of which length ,I have all three lengths
In fact they have nothing printed at all only a USB logo at relevant end
