Can you help a novice format an external hard drive?

Greetings.
I'm not very tech literate, so I hope you can help walk me through the following.
I have an external 250 GB firewire drive for back up, and I'd like to format and partition it as a bootable drive and also to back up my 2 internal 40 and 20 GB drives. I don't know how to do this. for example, I don't know whether to format the disk as OS Extended or OS Extended (Journalled). Also, when I backed up using Super Duper, I selected the "make this a bootable disk" option, but couldn't boot from it (It's currently a "Mac OS Extended" disk).
Also, when I have Disk Utility opened, why do I see 2 icons for the same disk? For example, my main drive says" 37.3 GB ST 340014 A", and an indented icon says "OS X" (which is what I named the drive). I know that Disk Utility can or cannot perform certain of its functions depending on which icon I select.
I know this is basi stuff for you...but not for me.
Thanks.

Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
You can clone your system to the external drive as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Set Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only.
2. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
3. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • Can't access files on Formatted SeaGate external hard drive

I have a SeaGate Free Agent Go external hard drive.  I reformatted it to be Mac compatible when I bought it to back up my old mac book a few years ago.  When trying to access the iPhoto library it says it's on a locked volume and to try again when I have read/write access. I went to disk utility and repaired disk permissions on my computer and checked to see the format of the external hard drive (Mac OS Extended). Any help on how to access these pictures??

There isn't an option for :ignore ownership on this volume". This is what my get info page looks like:
It looks to me like I need to change access for everyone but am unable to do so. Like I said in my previous post I formatted the drive to my old computer (which not working anymore) so I'm not sure how to get around this.

  • Can you store iPhoto events on an external hard drive?

I am a professional photographer and work in iPhoto (yes, also use Photoshop, Aperture, etc.), but organize all my photos by the events in iPhoto for quick and easy viewing, e-mailing, sharing with other applications, etc.
All my photography events are eating up my hard drive memory quite fast and I also backup everything on a 1TB external WD Hard Drive.
I'm curious to know if there is a way I can delete my events from iPhoto on my computer's hard drive and have it read only from my external drive?  I'd like to have my personal photos available on my computer's hard drive and event photos in iPhoto on my external drive (and not eat up a ton of memory).  Essentially, every time I open up iPhoto with my external hard drive plugged in, I'd like to see all my photos by events.
Is there a way I can do this?
    Thank you in advance!!!

Interesting - and thank you for the speedy reply John!
So if I wanted all my wedding photography on a different 'library' on my external hard drive I would simply hold down "option" when opening up iPhoto and create a new library on my external drive?  This way, I can easily switch between my professional work and my personal work?  Every time I wanted to switch I would simply hold down "option" when loading up iPhoto?
Would my Time Machine Back-up also back-up my library on my external hard drive?  I presume that the answer here is no, however, thought I would ask anyway.  Not sure how comfortable I feel about leaving all my photos only on an external drive not backed up in anyway.
If you are able, please do let me know your thoughts - thanks!

  • Can you use Time Capsule as an external hard drive?

I want to use it as both a back-up drive and an external hardrive for movies etc that I dont want to keep on my Mac so I can have more free space. I was just wondering if this is possible with this device or if I need a separate portable hard drive/external hard drive to do this.

I have an external HDD that I use for backups once in a while, BUT to be honest with you I last backed up my iTunes stuff (around 30K songs) over a year ago. Maybe it is time for another backup.
In all fairness, the whole time I have been using Mac's (since 2001) I have never had a major crash (knock on wood) so it has not been high on my priority list tbh. This said, how Apple have been acting lately I feel they have become a little too big for them selves and I have started to notice errors here and there, something that was unheard of earlier
Anyway, in most cases it is never the HDD that causes problems and extracting data from these are not a major hinder so I'm good...
EDIT: Oh, maybe I misunderstood the question

  • Can you use TC as just an external hard drive

Can a TC be set up as just an external hard drive?

Yes, as long as you use ethernet or wireless.. not USB.
Then you do have some setup issues. Because for instance if you use ethernet for network, it is much better to put the TC onto the network.. just use bridge modem.. or you can use wireless.. but it is hard to use the same service for both internet and the TC connection if they are separate.
Beaten by Bob.. BBB.. second time this week.. (in Maxwell Smart voice).
Good point he makes.. you can use a straight external disk at half the price. USB direct to the computer is much faster than wireless and not that much slower than ethernet. Maybe even same.

  • Can you put the applications on an external Hard drive?

I don't have a computer, I just use the school's. I am starting a business and I want to use Adobe Muse, but my school does't provide it, so i was wondering if i could download it to an external hard drive and plug it into any mac that I am at to use it, or does the program need to be on the computers hard drive to use it.

You cannot use an external removable drive. The installer will prevent it in the first place and as you already guessed, the specifics of the licensing system require a persistent install on an internal drive.

  • Can you use your iPod as an external hard drive?

Sorry if this has been posted before . . .
I have a 160GB iPod and like with most people, my iPod is larger than my laptop and subsequently I am running out of free space on my laptop due to all the movies and music.
I’m not so worried about the music, but I would like to remove the burnt movies from my laptop, but leave them on my iPod. Is there any way of using the iPod like an external hard drive? If I delete the movies from my laptop – the iPod tries to Sync and I lose everything?
    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks Chris,
When I use iTunes through the normal sync window
    Devices > Ipod > movies
and select ‘Sync - selected movies’ and tick the ones to sync it removes the un-ticked items from my iPod. If I tick all of them and sync (and the movie has been removed from my hard-drive) it brings up an error message saying ‘the movie or data file cannot be found’.
I would be happy to use iTunes to store the movies, but I think I am missing a step.
    Appreciate the help,

  • Can you boot a MacBookPro from an external hard drive with Windows XP?

I'm planning on getting a MacBookPro with a 512GB Solid State drive.
Is there any chance I would be able to find a way to boot from an external drive that has Windows XP installed.
Why would I want to do that you ask? I want to travel with my Mac, but have access to certain programs(AutoCad2010 & 3dMax)that are supplied on my Employer supplied computer without carting it around too... it's a "brick." I know there are Mac versions of AutoCad and 3Dmax, but my employer won't supply me with them. (They are not smart enough to recognize the productivity benifits of Macs.) I thought it would be great to take the Hard drive, put it in a USB or Firewire case and just boot up from that. Probably just a crazy idea, but maybe some clever person knows a way?

Windows XP will neither install nor run on an external drive. However, your boot volume is more than large enough to accommodate a Boot Camp partition in which to run Windows. Or you can purchase Parallels or VM Fusion to run Windows in a virtual machine. Problem solved.

  • Help a Novice Networ an external hard drive

    Hi All.
We have 2 MacBooks, one running 10.4 & the other running 10.5. We also have an eMac that is running 10.4, that's primarily a web surfing box. The eMac is connected to our dsl router via Ethernet. The laptops connect via Airport. It's an AT&T wireless dsl router.
    I just purchased a 1TB Seagate/Maxtor Netowrk drive (seen here: http://www.ecost.com/Detail.aspx?edp=42065822&navid=155441519 )
Here’s what I’d like to do with this drive:
    - keep it connected to the network via Ethernet into the wireless modem
    - store all my music to be accessed on any of the three computers in iTunes
    - Backup via Time Machine (or otherwise) all three macs
    - Share folders & files across the network
I’d like to have the drive appear as an icon on the desktop, or in finder, for all three machines, just like my other external drive does on the macbook when connected via firewire. Then, can’t I just double click the icon to “surf” through that drive?
Anyway, I’m writing because I’ve connected the drive & installed Maxtor’s mgt. software. I can connect to the drive through their software interface, but not through finder. There are no icons on any desktops, etc. The Maxtor software isn’t very user friendly at all, so I’d much prefer to use finder.
Is there any special settings in OSX that I should selecting or setting up to make all of this happen?

You will not be able to use Time Machine with a 3rd party Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. Or at least not easily.
Time Machine will only recognize a directly attached disk, an Apple Time Capsule, or another Mac OS X Leopard system offering a disk via file sharing.
Any other storage would require some hacking.
It may be possible to use some other backup solution. I guess a lot would depend on whether the Samba server and the file system in the NAS supports files greater than 4GB in size. I'm guessing it most likely does, but that is just a guess.
In theory it should be possible to store you music on the NAS. You might want to search the MacOSXHints.com web site for ways you could do this. Here is one suggestion:
    <http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090204122516833>
Creating a desktop icon should be possble. First you figure out how to create a share on the NAS. Then you figure out how to mount that share on your Mac. Hopefully the NAS instructions include information on creating shares and mounting them on a Mac.
Once you have the share mounted on the Mac, you create an Alias of the mounted Share. Unless Maxtor is doing something strange, the Share should be mounted at /Volumes/yourShareName. Clicking on your computer name on the Finder side-bar should bring up a folder containing all your mounted volumes, including the NAS share. You create an Alias from this (Finder -> File -> Make Alias).
Now drag the Alias into your System Preferences -> Account -> Startup Items, and when you login the share will be automatically mounted.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

hello once again.. i have formatted my external Hard drive it using exFAT, now my windows cant detect my device, can u plzz help me the whole purpose is getting ruined, i use Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

This is a problem with the Mac OS X implementation of exFAT. I've had the same problem.
Best is to use a Windows box to format the drive exFAT. Then it can be read by both Windows and Mac OS.
But aren't Macs supposed to "Just Work"? Not in this case.

Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help.  Tks.

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.
