Can you help me with my External Hard Drive?

Hey everyone,
I'm having a big problem with my external hard drives. Firstly, I'll give you all the information I think you might need-
* I'm running on Mac OSX 10.4.11.
* I have the most recent release 13" Macbook and it has plenty of memory left.
* Both my EHD's are made by LACIE. One is 250GB (18 months old) and the other 500GB (2 weeks old).
* Both work perfectly on every other computer I've tried - (2 Macs and 2 Windows).
* Both are formatted as FAT32 because I need to use them on Mac at home and Windows at work.
Now, the problem is every time I mount one of the EHDs on my laptop, they show up on the desktop but when double clicked (or Apple + O 'ed) they cause Finder to have a spaz, with the top white bar disappearing along with everything on my desktop (for about 2s).
What I have *tried so far*-
* Mounting and unmounting the EHDs.
* Turning on and off both EHDs.
* Plugging them in one at a time.
* Restarting the Macbook and plugging them in after it has fully loaded.
* Restarting the Macbook and plugging them in as it loads.
* Creating a new user account to open them in.
* Verifying both EHDs using Disk Utility - both claim to be working properly.
* That trick where you take out the battery and power source, hold down the On button for 5s, then hold Apple + P + R + Option while the Macbook turns back on.
None of these have worked so far. Please help!
Thank you so much in advance,
Joe

Have you tried opening them in a Finder window? Also, you might boot to your Install DVD and launch Disc Utility to verify and repair both permissions and your drive.
Sounds strange. I also have the Lacie 500G - partitioned, but with one being FAT 32 ...works fine for me.

  • Can you save ibooks contents to external hard drive

Hi, can you save the contents of ibook (or Ibooks) to an external hard drive. Any help would be good. Many thanks

Not like you can with iTunes, if that is what you mean. But you can simply drag-n-drop the eBook from iBooks to the external HDD.

  • How can you upload music from PC external hard drive to iPad 2?

I recently got an iPad2 to replace a netbook that was stolen. I have all my music stored on an external hard drive and was wondering what is an easy way to upload it to either the iPad itself or to the iCloud? Also is there someway to connect an iPod Classic to the iPad to share/transfer music?
    Brian

You are going to need to route that music thru I tunes, then sync it down.  There is not easy way to connect a drive with music to a pad.  Same answer with the pod.  You need iTunes to act as the traffic cop between the devices.
If the music was in the cloud, you can get it down, but there is no way to get it up without syncing thru I tunes.

  • Can You store Itunes on an external hard drive

I have a very old computer that has limited storage. I would like to put my itunes library on my external hard drive. Is this possible? If so how would I go about doing this? thanks

    Yes, it's fairly easy.
First, assign the exHD to a drive letter that is far enough down in the alphabet that no other device will ever use it. M: for Media might make sense. Use windows device manager to do this.
Then, tell itunes the location of FUTURE additions to its library by going into itunes menu > edit > preferences advanced. Tell it to use a folderon the M: drive.
That will take care of FUTURE additions.
To move EXISTING content to the M: drive without itunes losing their place, run the itunes menu > file > library > organize > consolidate command.
Remember, after you do this move, ALWAYS have the exHD plugged in and operational BEFORE you start itunes.

I've been getting the error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by the computer". I can't open system preferences, disk utility, or Time Machine. I'm guessing it has something to do with my external hard drive, although it hasn't been touched lately, but I can't figure out how to solve the problem. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Thanks for your quick response. I had a look at your discussion... I tried it on a Windows machine and I thought that was compatible with ExFAT?
Therefore I need to attempt to use my external hard drive with a machine that boasts OS X 10.6.5 or above and then it should work?
    Thanks

  • Brand new to forum.  Can a Maxtor IV One Touch external hard drive previously used on a PC be formatted to work with my Mac Pro OSX  version 10.6.8?

I've never participated in a forum before; so, please let me know if I'm going about it wrong.
My question is this:  Can a Maxtor One Touch 4 external hard drive that was previously used on a PC be set up for use on my Mac Pro?  I'm preparing to upgrade the Mac to the most recent software version and it was suggested I back everything up first.
I reformatted the hard drive so it is currently empty.  There are icons on my Mac desktop for One Touch 4 and Maxtor Manager but other than that nothing appears to be working.  There are no drives showing in the Maxtor Manager so I suspect that's where I need to start.  However, I don't know enough about what I'm doing to move ahead on my own and I don't want to screw anything up.  If anyone knows the steps I should take next, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you.

I am embarrassed how simple that was.  I did warn you that I'm technologically challenged; I'm pretty sure that proved it.
The external hard drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The link you provided indicates the external drive will work with Time Machine.  I've never worked with Time Machine and don't know what my next step should be.  Would you please walk me through it?
Your help is greatly appreciated.  From the points you have accumulated, I can tell you have helped many others and I thank you for your generosity.

  • Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

Hello! Help please! Best external hard drive preferably 1TB for macbook pro 2011. thank you!!!

You can pickup any 1TB USB powered drive for about $100 at just about any local office supply store.
It comes formatted FAT32 (MSDOS) for reading by OS X and Windows PC's.
However if your files sizes are going to be larger than 4GB in size (like video tends to be) then your going to need to select the drive in OS X's Disk utility (in the Applicaitons > Utilities folder) and format the drive exFAT instead.
exFAT is a drive format that 10.6.5 and later Mac's, Windows Vista and 7 machines can read just fine. XP machines need a free exFAT drive install from Microsoft.
Do backup the 1TB to another 1TB drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or another backkup utility because 1TB is a lot of data to lose on a $100 drive.
I don't advise the "port powered" USB drive as these tend to have power issues and with 1TB of data on it, very risky. Use a powered drive if you can all help it.

  • Help with unreadable external hard drive

I am having problems with an external hard drive and found your Email in yahoo answers.
I have a 'MB' external hard drive with a Mac OS X 4 11. A few days ago I turned off the Mac at the back button, after the screen went dark, I unplugged the HD only to find the Mac came on again. The Mac must have been in sleep mode? Since this time the Mac will not recognise the HD.
I tried another USB, making sure the preferences under finder is checked for all items and tried data recovery, PRAM reset, Disc Utility, which did see the drive (in gray) and it gave me this message; Error; underlying task reported failure on exit / 1 non HFS volume checked / 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error / unable to read FAT (input/output error).
I am hoping I can still use this external HD or could there be bad news ahead? I have not yet tried this on another Mac. Please can anyone help or advise? Thank you.

    that was my backup!
If you truly mean a backup then that means you still have the original files on your internal drive, or wherever. You just make another backup. If you mean it was an archive/overflow drive then that's not a backup (and you should start thinking about buying another HD to save both the files on your internal and external since either of those could fail without warning).
So are you suggesting I go to a place/individual that does PC data retrieval? And does this mean I buy another external HD?
I don't know much about file recovery on PCs. If this was a Mac drive then there would be a good chance you could either use Disk Utility on your Mac already to repair it, or perhaps a utility such as Diskwarrior ($100) to do the same. That repair could be done pretty much in-place. It's only when a drive is really seriously damaged, in particularly physically, that you need a second HD. Again, this is if you could do this on a Mac.
There are supposedly Mac based recovery tools that can also recover FAT, but those would likely need a second drive and the results might not be pretty (files, everywhere, maybe without original file names).
I'd find a buddy with a PC and see if they have something on there that can do it for a cup of coffee.

I can not save any data to external hard drive from my mac pro. Is there anyone can help me in this regard?( note, when i first plug my ext. drive to mac i chose option to backup later)

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

Hello Ian. I am currently using Lion installed on a WD My Passport 500Gig drive connected to my MBPro via USB, which is still running 10.6.8. Like you I am not prepared to lose all my currently functioning Mac, but also like to see how the new OS runs before making the total switch, maybe when it gets to 10.7.2
So after you download Lion and select to run the installer it will show you which disk to install on, being the default SL drive you downloaded Lion with. But here you can click Other Disk and select the external HD. The installer will run and then boot into the external drive to complete the installation. From then on you can use Startup Disk or the Option key to select the preferred OS.

  • Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule?

Can I increase the capacity of Time Machine with an external hard drive connected to Time Capsule via the USB port?  My current Time Machine has a total capacity of 1TB.  I'd like to double or triple its memory.  I don't want to use the external hard drive in lieu of the Time Capsule hard drive.  I'd like to use it in addition to.  Just don't know if/how it's possible.
This is another one of those questions that I've searched the web for answers, and have gotten tricky answers back.  So now I'm trying to introduce a clean slate to the mix.
    Thank you for your time!

Well, what you mentioning is possible.  However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up.").  Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule.  I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule.  Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it.  Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first).  If it works, you're all set.

  • Can I partition my hard drive to hold Windows 8 (Beta), instead of Windows 7, and can I do this with an external CD drive?

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion installed, but my CD drive inside my computer is damaged*, and it's far cheaper to buy an external CD drive than to repair it entirely. Before I do either, I would like some grasp of whether or not it's worth my time and money, as I've yet to order the external drive or make a genius bar appointment.
Also, the reason I'm choosing Windows 8 (Beta) is because it's free.
*I dropped my computer once two years ago. I haven't even used my CD drive until recently when trying to install Windows 8. I assume the drop was the issue. I've used compressed air to remove dirt/dust as well as resetting the PRAM multiple times and nothing seems to work, but I'm not worried about it.
    Thank you.

Can I partition my hard drive to hold Windows 8 (Beta), instead of Windows 7, and can I do this with an external CD drive?
    No and No.
1: Apple only supports Windows 7 at this time in BootCamp (direct install into a bootable partition) because Win 8 is in Beta and no Mac hardware drivers are available yet from Apple for Windows 8.
2: You can't install Windows from a external cd drive into BootCamp, it has to be a internal one far as I know, perhaps a USB will work I don't know.
    Yes:
1: You can download and install Windows 8 Beta into a the free virtual machine software called VirtualBox, which Windows 8 will run in a window in OS X. This is better as it's still in Beta and Windows Beta releases will expire. Plus Windows 8 is a pain in the behind and you will want to be able to have VirtualBox or OS X be able to regain control over the computer.

Please help me! My MacBook was stolen along with an external hard drive that had all my photos of my children on them. I hadn't backed to iCloud or backed anywhere else. I am distraught. No find my mac either...help...please... Some programmes are still running like drop of and Skype... Is it all over?!?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?
