Can you invert a circle mask

I am trying to make the transition to FCP X for some projects, not so easy. I would like to make the inverse of the circle mask. i.e. I would like to cut a circle out of a top image to reveal what is beneath. Any ideas. Thanks

Yes, easy.  A plugin called Slice X from CoreMelt does that super easy.  About the esiest way there is to do it besides making your own in Motion 5.  Use the "Shape Mask Layer", select the circle from the pre-set shapes, check the invert box.
Or create your own Mask effect in Motion.
1- Open a new Motion 5 "Final Cut Effects" template project.
2- C for the circle tool, hold shift while dragging to make a perfect circle.
3- F1 and set position X & Y to zero.
4- Publish the Position and Scale parameters.
5- F4 and Publish the Feather parameter.
6- Right click the Effect Source layer, "Add Image Mask".
7- Drag the shape layer into the "Mask Source" well.
8- Below that Publish the "Invert Mask" parameter.
9- Save with appropriate name and catagory.
Download the finished project folder here if you want.

  • Can you make a "filter mask" in FCP ?

Like in photoshop you can add an "adjustment layer" , for example Hue/Saturation and then add a mask so the Hue/Saturation will only apply to a certain part of the image... Can you do the same thing in FCP, ie: apply a filter mask ?

Thats a good tip thanks. I've used the 3-way's visual interface before so didn't notice the -limit on luma- option.
The bottom half of my picture was underexposed,-- but it seems like this limit on luma would allow me to lighten the bottom half without increasing further the over-exposure in the top half.

  • Can you invert a mask in Keynote 09?

I'm trying to figure out if you can invert a mask in Keynote Instead of the mask being the opaque area of the image, it would be the transparent area of the image. So, you'd have a hole in your image. Does anyone know if this is possible or if there is a workaround? I need to be able to do this inside of Keynote, a PNG with a hole will not work for my situation. Thanks for any input.

So, I essentially drew a shape and overlapped it on itself to make a hollow area on the inside. I then used that as a mask, worked wonderfully. The whole reason for me doing this is to see if I can put this masked image on a master page, and then place video behind it on a slide with this masked/master. Problem is the video, when behind that masked image, will not give you the controls when rolled over in presentation mode. Keynote doesn't recognize your pointer is over a movie if the masked image sits above that movie. Therefore, you don't get the movie controls in presentation mode.

  • Can you add alpha to masks yet in flash?

Its somthing I have hoped would be implemented into flash at some point. Any one know if its avaialble yet?
Basically I would like to draw a box with a fill gradient with one end of the gradient set to 0 alpha then set this box as a mask layer. if its 0 alpha then the mask shouldnt be visible in that part of the gradient.
This would come in handy if for example you have a gradient background or complex background(bitmap ect) and you had a text box over the top that you require to fade into the background.
Or does anyone no of a work around for this problem?
    Thanks

It's been possible for quite some time.  Try searching Google using "AS2 gradient mask" or "AS3 gradient mask"

  • Can you make a gradient mask for photos in Pages 08?

I have a photo that I want to go from 100% opacity on the left edge to zero opacity toward the right edge.
Is this possible in Pages 08?
If so .... is it also possible to control where the "fade out" begins?

I doubt it is possible inside Pages. It is possible, of course, if you use an external image editor and add the desired transparency there. (Hint: you cannot have a jpg with transparency, but you can with psd, gif, tif or png-24.)

  • Can you use color splash on a photo that was edited in black and white or do you have to mask the photo before editing it in black and white?

can you use color splash on a photo that was edited in black and white or do you have to mask the photo before editing it in black and white?

I think you are asking whether it makes an difference whether you create the mask before or after you edit the black & white version. The answer is that since the color version and the b&w version are on different layers (as seen here), it makes no difference when you edit the b&w version.
Also consider another technique that separates the color element in the image. Here, the area surrounding the color image is a line interpretation of the scene, similar to a Tone Line Conversion, a technique that was created with film many years ago.  (I am so old,  I still remember how it was done.) This is how to get the result similar to the one shown above but with a line illustration created in Photoshop replacing the b&w layer version:
    1. Open an image. This technique is more successful if the image you select has many clearly defined edges.
    2. Make a duplicate layer. (Cmd+J). It becomes Layer 1
    3. With Layer 1 chosen, go to Filter>Blur>Smart Blur. Set the Quality to High and the Mode to Edge Only. The default settings are Radius 3.0, Threshold 25.0. To increase the amount of detail in the line conversion, raise the Radius setting. Use the white-on-black illustration within Smart Blur as a guide. Then click OK.
    4. The line illustration will appear as white lines in a black background. To change this to black-on-white, choose Image>Adjustments>Invert.
    5. Insert a new layer below Layer 1. It will serve as the background for the line illustration. To do this, hold down the Command key while clicking on the New Layer symbol at the bottom of the Layers panel. It is the second symbol from the right. It will become Layer 2.
    6. Fill this new layer with a light color. To do this, click on the Foreground Color symbol in the Tools section. It will open the Color Picker. Choose a light color and click OK.
    7. Choose Edit>Fill. Use: Foreground Color.  Mode: Normal. Opacity: 100% and click OK. Layer 2 will fill with the color. Although it will not appear in the image because Layer 1 is above it, a quick check of the Layers panel will confirm that the color you chose has filled Layer 2.
    8. Remove the white area from in Layer 1. Go to Layer 1. Choose the Magic Wand tool. Uncheck the Contiguous box in the Options Bar and click in a white area of the image. Next, click the Delete key.  Choose Select>Deselect to remove the marching ants.
    9. (Optional)  You may now change the line illustration in Layer 1 from black to a dark color compatible with the color in Layer 2. To choose the color, click on the Foreground Color symbol in the Tools section. It will open the Color Picker. Choose a suitable dark color and click OK. While in Layer 1, click the first symbol next to the word  Lock:  in the Layers panel above Layer 1. This will prevent the dark color from appearing in the blank area of Layer 1. Choose Edit>Fill. Use: Foreground Color.  Mode: Normal. Opacity: 100% and click OK. The black lines will change to the dark color you chose.
    10. Combine Layers1 and 2: While in Layer 1, choose Layer>Merge Down. The layers are combined into a single layer called Layer 2.
    11.  Add a black mask to Layer 2 by clicking on the Mask symbol at the bottom of the Layers panel. It is the symbol to the right of the fx symbol. Where you would like full color objects to appear within the line rendition, paint in white on the black mask with a brush set to either soft-edge or hard-edge as the illustration and your taste dictate.

  • Having downloaded Elements 13 - gone to setup - but when put in password I just get four squares going round in a circle. Can you help ?

I have downloaded Elements 13 - but when I go to Set-up it initialises the installer, I then say I have purchased and it asks me to sign in. But when I put in my password - I just get four boxes going round in a circle. Can you help ?

    Hi Kartikay Sharma,
this happened after I downloaded the PSE13 SW, extracted the zip file and launched the Set-up.exe for the very first time, and on every retry.
It asked for my Adobe Id, and after entering it, those four squares started to circle and never stopped, as described by jeni69.
All I want to accomplish is to convert a photo catalog from album starter edition 3.2 to PSE.
After failing to install PSE13, I downloaded a trial version of PSE12, and installed it successfully. But now I am stuck with a conversion error. (Sorry, don´t have the English version)
Do you happen to know, which version of PSE would be capable of converting an Album Starter Edition Catalog?
    Thanks for your help

  • Can you specify format mask for date or timestamp columns

    Hi,
Recently when I'm developing a PL/SQL application, I find that any format mismatch between data in table and format mask specified in to_date/to_timestamp function will cause exceptions. However, I'd like to make my application more robust and immune to this kind of problems, and know exactly which format mask to use for exactly what columns in db table.
Is there a way in a table column to specify the format mask for date/timestamp columns such that I can know exactly what format mask to use when doing conversion? Also I don't want to depend on NLS_DATE_FORMAT specification, don't want to make a long case statement to check for every date format allowed by Oracle.
    Many thanks.

As per my knowledge it can't be possible
casuse if you entered '12/11/2007' date
how oracle know that in date 12'th is the month or 11'th.
The person who entered that date will also have confusions in future.
either you have to fix one date format for your whole application (application configuration).
or you have to store the date format in other column of the table.
In case you set the date column to varchar and store all the dates without format then
in future you may face problems in future while fetching the records, searching etc.
    Regards

  • Invert a layer mask? Can't Ctrl + I

I'm doing some photo editing of a HDR combined photoshop file. I have a layer mask of my buildings. I copied the layer, now i'd like to invert the mask so that I can immediately start fiddling with the sky.
How do I invert the layer mask? I'm in 32-bit mode right now. CS3

Ah, CS3 Extended. I was going to purchase that as an upgrade, having had every other version as a stand-alone since 2.5 (except 5.5), BUT, I had used my S/N from AI to get the upgrade to Adobe Production Studio Premium CS2 for video. It included PS CS2, which I really didn't need, as I had it on my two machines already. Went to upgrade to just PS CS3 Extended, but could not, as I NOW had to get the full-boat boogie package for Premiere, et al. Bummer. I do not want anything else in CS3, except Extended. First time I've ever been miffed at an Adobe upgrade policy. I had cut myself off from ever upgrading one component, even if I had previously owned it/them as a stand-alone. Will wait for CS4 and just take out a second mortgage - if I can get one then...

  • A Way To Invert A Clipping Mask?

Hey all.  Can this be done - inverting a clipping mask?
Basically, when you clip an image, the outside junk gets hidden.  I would like the reverse effect where the inside stuff is hidden.  Any way to do this?
And another question: is there a way to cleanly erase around an object in Illustrator? In Photoshop one can place a marquee around an image, then invert the marque to delete the stuff around it.  Is there a way of doing this in Illustrator without using the divide pathfinder command?
I'd like to erase around a bunch of overlapping object without having to divide them, because they'll all end up as separate slices, which is not what I want.
    Thanks,
    B.

    B,
To hide what is inside and show what is outside a path, you may consider Transparency palette flyout>Make Opacity Mask (Clip unticked, Invert ticked/unticked for white/black path).
To (more or less) get rid of the stuff round a Clipping Path/Mask, you may try the destructive deed, with the Clipping Mask selected:
    1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown list select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine),
    2) Object>Flatten Transparency, just keep the defaults including 100% Vector,
    3) Shudder.
This should reduce the size to the Bounding Box of the Clipping Path.

  • Can you think of a nifty trick to work in grayscale, while previewing in real-time a 2 color separation?

I need to come up with a procedure that allows a customer to work on a black and white image while assessing the effect of a translation into a 2-color separation.
To visualize what I’m looking for, place a grayscale image in the magenta channel of an empty (white) cmyk document, and the same grayscale image inverted into the yellow channel. The other 2 channels stay empty (white).
Now we have the white end of the grayscale expressed as yellow, the black end as magenta. Since one channel is a direct inversion of the other, the sum total of the 2 is always 100% at any point along a gradient.
I have written a action, that allows one to quickly look at the effect, but what I am being asked is to is to deliver the same thing in real-time.
    Duotone? NO!
In a duotone document I can only move one curve at atime, thus creating overlap (too much red) or a gap (whashed-out hue) between the profiles of the 2 curves.
    CMYK? NO!
In a cmyk document I have the option to move 2 curves simultaneously, but what I would need is an option to work one curve, while the other automatically moves equally in opposite.
    Gradient mapping?
Here I have a rudimentary way to set the starting, mid, and endpoints, but it needs to be done in RGB and I don't know of any way to separate the resulting RGB channels into a grayscale that maintains all the information.
Anyone? Any ideas are much appreciated.

    Mars Red,
This might work. Assuming you now have a CMYK document, with no cyan, no black, and magenta and yellow are inversions of one another
    1. Create a solid yellow fill color layer on top, blend mode normal 100% opacity
    2. Create an empty layer on top of that, blend normal, 100% opacity.
    3. Select all, fill this layer with solid magenta
    3. Hide this and the yellow layer
    4. Load the magenta channel as a selection
    5. Click on the solid magenta layer, Layer - Layer Mask - Hide Selection
    6. Show all the layers
    7. Click on the mask on the magenta layer. You can apply curves to this mask. No matter what you do to the mask, the yellow separation will always remain an exact inversion of the magenta. You will always have 100% ink coverage in every area, no more, no less. The only catch is the mask is opposite the ink, so curve adjustment is opposite of ink behavior.
That is CMYK solution. Here is duotone solution, much simpler:
Assuming you have a grayscale image:
    1. Mode duotone
    2. Type duotone.
    3. Ink 1 : color picker, CMYK, 100M (yields name Magenta)
    4. Ink 2: color picker, CMYK, 100Y (yields name Yellow)
    5. Ink 2 curve: 0 = 100, 100 = 0 (inversion)
    6. Hit enter. Now you can make curve adjustments to the duotone channel (not the duotone curves) using Image: Adjustments: Curves. No matter what you do to the duotone channel, you will maintain inversions of magenta and yellow, and you will always have 100% ink coverage in any given area.
