Can you lock clips?

This is a basic feature that I've looked for and can't find.
I finished my rough cut and I started doing sound and color grading. During this process of sound and color grading, there were clips where I wanted to DELETE a specific effect attached to the clip. This inadvertantly deleted the clip itself, accidentally, in some places and I didn't realize it until I went back to play the entire scene.
After doing a rough cut, is there any way to lock clips so that you can't delete them accidentally but you can still add FX to them?
Thanks!
Scot

The absolute fastest thing you can do: instead of removing the effect -- just turn it off. Click on the blue square on the left side of the Effect's name to toggle it off (it will turn black) . You don't accidently delete your clip... and if you want to reuse the effect later, all you need to do is turn it on (click the now black square). No need to re-set everything up.  It's also a good way to try out different combinations of effects quickly.

Many of your points are totally legitimate.

  • Can you lock touch screen when watching videos!??

Can you lock the screen so it doesn't become a touch screen when watching videos!??
Just got new ipod (7th gen) and this driving me crazy that I think I'm going to continue to use my older one unless there is a solution out there. I watch tv shows while commuting and while walking here or there I have to 'palm' the ipod or walk with it at my side, and the problem is that since the touch screen is sooooo sensitive I keep fwding/rewinding/swiping the screen to something else, and then to get back to that part in the video is a pain because unlike the older ipod you can just fwd a few secs, this one jumps minutes because it's so sensitive. PLEASE tell me there's a way to lock it from accidently touching it!

No - there is no such switch on the iPad - the switches control volume, muting, screen rotation, and the home button itself.
You could place it behind a screen of some sort so touching the outer screen won't affect the iPad screen - I've seen ads for 'presentation kiosk' type devices for the iPad that allow this, although I'm not sure how practical they would be in the backseat of a car.

  • Can you lock a pdf file?

Hi all! I have a client who has created a pdf booklet. It's a form that people will be filling out. She wants to distribute it on a CD. So... people will have to be able to copy it to their computer to open and fill it in. However, she then wants them to NOT be able to copy the pdf (she doesn't want it duplicated so that others can use it). Is this even possible? Can you lock a pdf like that? Thanks!

    >What kind of restrictions?
Check File>Properties>Security for the different options.
Keep in mind that security on a PDF file is easy to get around.

  • Concentrator 3015 - Can you lock clients down by PORT?

I have a 3015 setup and have created a tunnel, which works fine. I also have it locked down to specific IP addresses.
My question is, Can you lock the cleints down to only a few specific ports? (ex. port 3389 only)

Yes, you can. There are a few steps that you need to take in order to do this. In a nutshell, you need to define a set of rules, create a filter, and then apply the filter to the group.
To create the rules, go to: Configuration->Policy Management->Traffic Management->Rules
Here is a link that discusses rules within the concentrator. If you scroll down the page a bit, the section below this one walks you through the process to create the rules. Take a look at some of the default rules that are configured. One thing to keep in mind is that you need to define rules for the return traffic as well unless you want to use some of the default rules to allow all outbound traffic going back to the clients.
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/vpn/vpn3000/3_6/config/polmgt.htm#1321359
Once you have your rules defined, you need to setup a filter. The filter is nothing more than a group that allows all of the rules you have defined to be associated together. The link below talks about filters and the section below talks about adding a new filter. To create the filter go to Configuration->Policy Management->Traffic Management->Filters
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/vpn/vpn3000/3_6/config/polmgt.htm#1321359
Once you have your filter defined, you need to associate it to a group. This is done in Configuration->User Management->Groups, selecting the group to apply the filter to and modifying the group. On the General tab for the group being modified, there is an option to associate a filter to the group. Select the filter you setup and apply your changes.
I would setup a test group to allow you to get comfortable with setting up the rules/filters before implementing them on a production group where you could impact users. This will let you make sure the rules/filter you have setup works the way you expect it to while not impacting any of the production users.

  • Can you render clips / transitions

I have a new Mac that is very very fast. However, even still some video transitions don't play smoothly.
I can export the whole project into a quicktime movie or .m4v file and see them smoothly, but I cannot see them play smoothly in iMovie.
Is there a way for iMovie to pre-render effects and transitions so that they don't have to be generated in real time (that is too slow for real time)...?
(Many of the source files I'm working with are .m4v files, which could be why the transitions are playing back poorly.)

You can convert the m4v files to Apple Intermediate Codec. That would convert the highly compressed h.264 into full i-frames. You can optimize the clips from within iMovie, or you can do this in MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Pro.

Using Aperture can I lock IPTC fields so that once I input the data and export images...other people can not change my metadata? (Other then in the original file stored within Aperture) For example I would like to lock my contact info and copyright fields when I export the images and email them around etc....
When I open my jpg or any file in Bridge I can change all IPTC Metadata. Can I prevent these changes?

No, there's no way to do that. Once you've exported a JPEG or TIFF file, any image editor can change IPTC information -- there is no DRM equivalent in the file format to "watermark" this info in there.

Was wondering if you can 'lock' or protect a cell in numbers like you can in excel?

    Alan,
No, you can not lock an individual cell in Numbers unless that cell happens to be a 1-cell table. Entire tables may be locked, but no individual cells within a table. So, put all the stuff you want to lock into one table and all the stuff that will be dynamic into another.
    Arrange > Lock.

Great question. We always want functionality of a device. Yes, you can lock this device while on a phone call. You holding the device will not disrupt the use of the device.

  • Can you 'lock out' a workstation via ZENworks?

    Hi,
I was wondering if there was a way to 'lock out' a workstation via
ZENworks so users can no longer log into the workstation temporarily.
This is the scenario - when someone within our company orders a new
workstation, they will many times tell us that the workstation is being
replaced when in reality the old workstation it is replacing is never
    taken off the network.
The problem? - we do not charge any new license fees for replacement
workstations PROVIDING the old workstation is disposed of (that way we
are able to transfer the licenses from the old to the new). If the old
workstation is still used, we are in violation of license fees.
Solution? - 'lock out' the old workstation so no one can use it any
longer unless they call our Helpdesk and it is 'unlocked' at which time
we remind them of the license charges.
I am not sure how this can be performed. We currently do something
similar with NEW XP PCs that have no local user accounts on them yet
(basically we enable login restrictions under the DLU policy - if the
workstation can't create a local user account for the user, they can't
log into the network or the PC). That solution would not work in this
case though since the local accounts would already be created on the PC.
We don't want to remove any software from the machine that will need to
be reinstalled in case the site does want to keep the machine on the
network after a new one is purchased. The solution should be designed to
easily enable the machine if the site does decide they want to keep the
machine on the network. Later on we would FDISK the PC for disposal.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as ALWAYS!
    Steve

Perhaps a Workstation Associated app that just pushed an invalid value for the
    GINA.DLL
Either Remote Regedit or another Force-Run app could restore this to a correct
    value.
Needs testing to make sure you can fix what you break, but this would lead
    everything intact.

  • Can you "lock" iTunes Media Folder location?

One of the things I hate about iTunes is that I keep my music collection on an external hard drive with mirrored RAID array. Songs I buy are automatically transferred onto that drive. But sometimes, the hard drive will go offline, for whatever reason - a power issue, bumped by someone, whatever. When that does happen, iTunes doesn't give you a warning, it just defaults to the internal Music folders. Until you realize that the hard drive is offline, every CD you rip, every song you buy will go straight to the iTunes folder on the Mac. When you finally reconnect that hard drive, and redirect iTunes to the iTunes Media Folder on it, you're hopelessly lost, with your music collection distributed between the two drives.
First off, WHY can't iTunes notify you that it can't find the designated iTunes Media Folder? It'll notify you about just about every single other bloody thing that happens in the computer?
Second, is there a way to LOCK the iTunes Media Folder onto another drive, such that iTunes can't find the iTunes folder on the Mac HD?
Third, is there an easy way to scan the library on my Mac HD and on the external HD to find out which files are missing from the external HD and need to be manually added to the library?
    ks in advance!
    Than

Hi Jonathan, it annoyed the heck out of me too. Answers to your questions:
No idea, it’s probably trying to be “helpful”.
I don’t believe you can lock iTunes the way you want, but you CAN stop iTunes from running WITHOUT THE DRIVE YOU WANT I got sick of manually transferring songs when this happened to me too. In my case my library is on a network server (NAS). I wrote the following AppleScript to deal with the situation and it will work for any externally connected drive, network, USB, FireWire etc.
So to explain the script: I’m asking Terminal to list the directory contents of the iTunes Library folder on the external drive. If it can, it makes iTunes start. If it can’t (the “on error” bit), it beeps at you and displays a dialog box that tells you it cannot start. I then save the script as an App, and give it the same icon as iTunes has, but a different name (‘iTunes Custom Launcher” for example). Then I remove iTunes from the Dock and put my custom launcher in the Dock instead. Doing this means the only odd thing you will see is that when the launcher starts iTunes, there will seem to be two iTunes icons in the Dock, but only while iTunes is running.
    — Start of script
    tell application "Terminal"
              try
do shell script "ls \"/Volumes/Music/iTunes Library\""
                        tell application "iTunes" to activate
              on error
      beep
display alert "iTunes will not start until the Network Music Library is available"
              end try
    end tell
    tell application "Terminal" to quit
    quit
    — End of script
In order to use the script, you will need to replace the folder location of the iTunes Library. If you’re not familiar with Terminal, see what Finder says the name of the Disk (or network share) is when it is connected. Assuming your iTunes Library is called “iTunes Library”, the format of the third line of the script is:
do shell script “ls \"/Volumes/<disk or share name>/<folder>/<sub-folder…>iTunes Library\"”
If, like me, your iTunes Library folder is at the root of the external drive, you only need to replace <disk or share name> with the drive name and forget about the <folder>/<sub-folder…> bit. If you’re not sure what to do to the script let me know and we can do more Q&A to see exactly what you need to make the script look like.
    So, the main steps:
Open the AppleScript Editor and copy/paste the script into the blank window
Save the script as “iTunes Custom Launcher” and choose to save it as an Application.
Copy/Paste the app into your Applications folder using Finder
To give the new app the same icon as iTunes has (optional), in the Applications folder, select iTunes and copy it. Do a “Get Info" on your new app and select the little icon in the top-left of the info screen so it has a blue outline, then do command-V (paste).
Remove iTunes from the Dock and add your new app.
For your question 3, I would just go into the music folders of whoever logs on to your mac and manually move whatever folders for artists/albums/songs are there; it should be the last time
Let me know if you need more help
