Can you name a compound clip?

Hello All,
I'm making several compound clips in my time line, but after I do this the name I have given to the clips now shows "compound clip" in the timeline.  Since I'm going to have serveral of these in my timeline I want to be able to tell them apart.  Can I give a name to a compund clip or at least a number so I can see at a glance what compound clip I'm working with?
Thanks
Mike

Tom you are amazing!   You should write a book about this stuff......ha ha.

  • Can't name Sequences or Clips - Seem to be in constant "Timeline" Edit Mode

    I'm having a strange problem. I can't name sequences or clips in the Browser. When I click the sequence to name it I get the standard box with the words Sequence 1 highlighted in Light Blue. My cursor is there. This is normally where you can backspace and rename a sequence.
    However, I cannot rename or name a sequence. What does happen though is that when I type a letter corresponding to a tool like Ripple or Slip, then those tools are highlighted in the lower right-hand vertical tool bar. So even though I'm operating in the browser, FCP is acting like I'm editing in the timeline.
    I've switched keyboards. I've cleared up 20 gb of memory. I've rebooted, restarted, and cleared my preferences. Nothing seems to work.

    When FCP rescues you, all your good settings go out along with the potentially corrupted. If you have customized your interface, loosing all that can be a total pain.
    On the off chance that it isn't a preference problem, (and with FCP not running) first BACKUP your preference files, then TRASH them. When you start FCP, new pref files will be created using the default settings. If this works, BACKUP the new ones.
    However, if trashing the prefs did no good - i.e. you still have the same problem, you can simply RESTORE to bring back your original settings.
    No matter what, once you have a good working setup, the BACKUP command is a great thing. Once saved, you can restore your 'known to be good' settings anytime things look funky and you will not lose custom settings.
    I prefer FCP Attic as it gives me the option to choose which preference files I wish to save and/or trash. With FCP Rescue it is all or nothing.
    Cheers.

  • In iMovie 11, how can you cut/paste a clip that has subtitles and actually have the subtitles get cut/pasted. When I try, the subtitles disappear into the void and I have to do the subtitling all over again.

  • Java arrays - can you name the keys?

    i have 1 function that declares 2 ArrayLists of type String. They are the same size and the values are related. Let's call them A & B.
    I was hoping i could have my function return just 1 array, with the values of arraylist A being they keys of the returned array, and the values of arraylist B being the values in the returned array.
    But can you name the elements of an array in java? in php you can, but in java, the only examples i have seen only use the standard #'s: 0, 1, 2, 3, etc. if you can, please post sample syntax.
    i guess i could use a double scripted array, but... well i don't exactly know what the sytax would be for that in declaring the funciton.
    if someone has a link of these kinds of examples / topics they could send me - that would be great too - i googled it but haven't really come across any.
    thanks in advance

    It appears as though what you are trying to do is associate a specific "key" value with another value. For example, let's say you want the word "dog" to be the key for the arraylist value of "bull dog."
    The perfect data structure for this that Java provides is called a Map. Here is some sample code.
    //create something called a HashMap where the first
    //value is the key, and the second value is the value
    //that the key is associated with
    HashMap<String, String> map = new HashMap<String, String>();
    //now, consider the previous example...
    //here is the syntax for storing those values
    map.put("dog", "bull dog");
    //and this would be the syntax for getting a value
    String value = map.get('dog");
    //which would give "bull dog"
    {code}
    Hope that helps :)

  • In imovie 09 can you make one continuous clip

    in imovie 09 can you make one continuous clip
    canu u download video in HDV to imovie 06 from a    SONY HDR-Fx 7 video camera as one clip

    No. iMovie 09 (and 11) is designed to import movies from camcorders. Every time it detects a start/stop it will make a different clip. They will be in chronlogical order, rather than edited order.
    If you still have iMovie 06, you can load the tape there as one continuous clip. Then EXPORT USING QUICKTIME choosing HDV as your codec. This will produce an MOV file that iMovie 09 or 11 can read, and which will be in the edited order.

  • Can you change where a clip connects to the story line?

    Anyone?

    The question's kind of vague. A clip gets connected to  the primary storyline based on where the skimmer or playhead is. If you want them connected at a different place move the skimmer before you make the edit.
    If you mean can you change the connection point of a connected clip without changing its position, yes, you can. You option-command click on the lower edge of the connected clip at the point at which you want it attached to the primary storyline.

  • Can you rotate a video clip?

    I have shot some video holding my camcorder sideways and upside down. Is there a was to "turn" the video in iMovie so it is displayed the right side up?
    Thanks

    Yes, use the Crop, Rotate, Ken Burns Tool. You can find the tool on the middle toolbar on the right, or you can find it in the Clip Inspector. You can bring up the Clip Inspector by selecting a clip and clicking on the little gear icon.

  • Can you name video/audio tracks in FCP?

    instead of V1, V2, V3... can you title or name these tracks?

    I used to think it would be cool, too, way back when Media 100 was Avid's main competition. But M100 talked us out of it.
    It's only a good option if the names carry through to EDL and other output options from FCP (or Avid, whatever an Avid is).
    I've worked on huge audio projects, 24-30 tracks. I've never been particularly lost and I've never worked on a system where naming the tracks was possible. So it has never really struck me as useful or desirable.
    Personally, I'd like to see tons of things FIXED before Apple starts adding more features and options but be sure to drop this request into the FCP FEEDBACK folder.

  • Can you name this effect?

    I'm looking for the name of the effect with which you could, for instance, highlight one person's face in a group photo. Where the scene would be darkened except for the person's face? Something like the Vignette filter but able to be specifically located and controlled. Is this effect available in FCE? Thanks very much.

    You can make it manually with the Mask Shape filter and a couple of layers of the clip. There is no filter built into FCE to do, but it's simple enough to do.

  • Can you see which timeline clips are being used in Media Browser?

    I'm a relatively new user and may not be familiar enough with cs5.5 but
    is there a way to see what clips are being used on the editing timeline in the media browser.
    I open premiere pro - Project is loaded. I edit the scene until it is finished.
    When I look over at the media browser, all my raw clips (some of which I'm
    using on the editing timeline) look the same - I can't tell which ones I using on the timeline.
    The reason I ask - when I fiinish editing a scene it would be nice to glance over at the
    media brower folder where my raw clips are located - easily see which ones I'm using because they
    are highlighted or checked and then delete the ones I no longer need.
    Is there a way to do this now?
    Thanks
    Jeff

    I dont think so  but a better way is to look in the top of the Project Window and there is a drop down that will show you all the useage instances of the clip.  You can click on them to go to them in the timeline.

  • Can you name multiple apple TV's to display in airplay?

    I have 3 apple TV's (#2) and wonder if there's any way to name each uniquely so as to pick the one you want, rahter than keep picking until you get the correct one.
    Thanks for any info.

    Yes, there are even defaults for naming them, such as LivingRoom, Bedroom, etc, or you can even enter your own name with the remote for each AppleTV.

  • Can you set/adjust the clip date in iMovie11?

    Ideally I should be able to do what I used to do in iMovie06, right click on the clip and change or set the date. I haven't been able to do that in iMovie09.
    ( iMovie09 shows me the date when I hover over clips, but I cannot change it. If I click on properties, I can adjust many things, except the date. Sometimes I am able to change the date by changing the file name inside the iMovie Events directory to something like "clip-2010-08-01.dv", but that doesn't always work).

    Yes. Right-click on the event clip and select Adjust Date And Time.

  • How can you make a movie clip zoom in on play?

    I simply have a rectangle vector image of a landscape and I want it to zoom in when I play it...and I guess stop at a certain point. Not a clicking function or roll over, just when I start up my swf file or go to that specific scene I want it start zooming (gradually, not fast either). Please help me. Thank you!

    Convert the image into a movieclip, give it an instance name, and look into using the Tween class to provide the gradually changes of the scaleX and scaleY values of whatever object you wish to zoom.
    import fl.transitions.Tween;
    import fl.transitions.easing.*;
    var twX:Tween = new Tween(instanceName, "scaleX", Regular.easeIn, startValue, endValue, zoomSecs, true);
    var twY:Tween = new Tween(instanceName, "scaleY", Regular.easeIn, startValue, endValue, zoomSecs, true);
    The code above is written instructively more than literally.  Anything I've bolded you can/need to define.
    Many people will recommend using third party tweening classes due to better performance and other reasons.  So you may want to look into them after you get this working.

  • Can you "name" a field in FormsCentral?

    In Adobe Acrobat forms, I could name a field.  For example, I have the same 4 questions for several presenters, so I name them "Q1Session1, Q1Session2", etc.  I have not been able to find this feature in Forms Central.

    Just label the fields as normal. You can go into the response tab and change the headers (on top) to be whatever you want (you can make them more unique). Those are used when you export to Excel.
    I think that will solve your problem.

  • Can you span an audio clip across sequences?

    I know you can do this across scenes in Dreamweaver. I am wondering if it is any different.
    I would like to take an audio clip as a source for background music, and have it play across all the sequences I have in my project, so that there are no jumps in the playback of the music. Is that possible?
    Thanks!

    why not just leave the music out of your sequences. Then make a master sequence where you put all of your other sequences, essentially using them as nests. Then you can have the audio file play straight though all of them?
