Can you play a dvd without front row?

hey,
Is it possible to just insert a DVD and select the DVD player app to look at it or do you have to go through the front row DVD player?
Sorry if this is a strange or stupid question. I am currently a windows XP user.
Thanks
Bjorn

You can also set your computer to auto load the DVD Player when you insert a DVD.
Go to System Preferences under the Apple menu.
Click the CDs and DVDs Preference Pane.
Using the drop down menus you can set the applications you would like your Mac to use when you insert specific kinds of disks.

  • Can You Play Multiple Playlists Without User Intervention

Can you stack and play multiple playlists? ie if you had three playlists of 50 songs each, could you pick all three, play all the songs in the first playlist, when it is finished move automatically to the second playlist play its songs then automatically move to the third without user intervention? And if so, can you play each of these in shuffle mode?

There's no "impromptu" method of doing so that I know of.
As far as un-impromptu methods (it's always fun inventing words), it will depend on whether you want to listen to this mega-playlist on an iPod or just with iTunes.
If it's just with iTunes, you can go to the File menu > New Folder command and create a new folder which we can call the Mega-Playlist folder. Drag the three playlists in question into that folder. When you select that folder and press Play, iTunes should go through all the songs.
If it's on an iPod, since Folders don't transfer over from iTunes, the only solution I know of would be to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes that will -
Match any of the following rules:
Playlist is the first playlist +
Playlist is the second playlist +
    Playlist is the third playlist.
Synching this mega-playlist to your iPod will allow you to select it from the Playlist menu.
Shuffle mode would shuffle songs from all three playlists together, not shuffle songs from the first playlist before moving on to shuffling songs from the second playlist before shuffling songs from the third playlist.

  • Can't play certain songs in Front Row: iTunes

I've just upgraded to iTunes 7.01, on Mac OS X 10.4.8, with Front Row 1.3.
When I try to play some songs through Front Row, I get a message saying "The Selected Song is not autorised to play on this computer" However the tracks play fine in the standard iTunes view, library and playlists.
It is not music I purcahsed from the iTunes store, it is music ripped from CD on an older machine and copied over to my new Macbook.
Anyone know if this is bug? and or how to solve it?
    Thanks

I am having a worse problem. Since upgrading to ITunes 7, I can't play some of the album I ripped from my CDs. I always use unprotected mp3. I have had to re-rip some of them, but I really don't have the time and patience to go through 500 plus albums. Any solutions out there?

  • Can you play hd dvd's or blue ray dvd's

mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.10)
i am very new to macs so if you think some of my questions a bit dumb bear with me.
i have my mac mini plugged into my hd plasma tv can i play hd/blueray dvd's and see them how they are meant to be seen. also if i record somthing on my dvd/rec on a rw/dvd the mac tells me it is blank whe it is not any help please

Although this is not an iPhone discussion:
    You can play HD-DVD's
    it's not competition.
Apple's own professional DVD authoring software DVD Studio Pro 4 allows HD-DVD authoring!
I am DVD Studio Pro certified by  I should know this!
Unfortunately though presently Blu-Ray DVD playback on a Mac is not supported Although Blu-Ray DVD read&write of data on a Mac is supported through Roxio Toast (along w/ a blu-ray DVD drive of course
FWIW, WMV is competition although it can be played on a Mac

  • Can't play movie files in front row...

    Hello,
I just got a new Macbook Pro (With lepoard) and cannot get my movie to play in Front Row. I could do it no problem in Tiger. I keep getting the message "The selected video could not be played--the format was not recognized."
The picture of the video shows up next to it, but it does not play and gives the above message.
Please help me out, as this is extremely frustrating. Thanks.

I had the same problem (only with the trailers and top (Movies and TV), it was resolved (unfortunately I don't remember how, may be with an upgrade) and now I have it again. These are files created by apple therefore there is no reason why a 3rd party codec would be needed to play them.

  • Can you make a DVD without a menu?

We need to make a DVD of a Quicktime movie I created.
I can do it just fine using one of the supplied themes.
    Looks great.
But in this circumstance I need to make it so the movie keeps playing continuously in a loop.
Is there a way to make it do that through iDVD?
I also tried a version using Roxio Toast.
It can create a menu-less DVD that plays back continuously.
But the quality pales by comparison to what iDVD creates.
    Any suggestions?

    Yes.

From *iDVD Help*: (Look there to see this entire explanation with pictures):
+Creating a DVD that plays automatically when it is inserted into a DVD player+
+You can create a DVD that consists of a single movie or slideshow that begins to play automatically when the viewer inserts the DVD into a player. Such a movie or slideshow is called an “autoplay” movie or slideshow. You can also set the movie or slideshow to loop so that it plays continuously in what is called “kiosk mode.” This is great for creating presentations to be used in a kiosk or for making simple projects that require minimum viewer interaction.+
    +To create a looping autoplay DVD:+
+Open iDVD and choose “Create a New Project” in the dialog that appears.+
+Type a name for your project in the Save As field, and then click Create.+
+The iDVD window opens with a default theme selected. This theme will not appear in your final DVD because an autoplay DVD does not use a theme.+
+Click the Map button (shown below) to open the DVD map.+
+Click Media to open the Media pane, then click Photos or Movies.+
+Drag a movie or a photo album, or even a single image, from the Media pane to the project icon (shown below).+
+You can also drag images or movies stored elsewhere on your computer or a connected server.+
+You can use photos, movies, presentation slides (created in a program such as Keynote), or other image files in a slideshow created in iDVD. iDVD works with any image file that is supported by QuickTime (including PICT, JPEG, TIFF, and PDF.)+
+To turn on looping for the autoplay movie or slideshow (a single image is also considered a slideshow in this context), click the project icon and then choose Advanced > Loop Movie or Loop Slideshow.+
+If you added a movie with sound, the audio of the movie is retained, so the viewer hears it during autoplay.+
+If you added a slideshow, you can double-click the project icon to open the slideshow editor. There you can add a single audio file or a playlist as a soundtrack and set other slideshow features, such as transitions and slide duration.+
+Click the Preview button (shown below) to see how your movie or slideshow looks.+
+The iDVD remote control opens, and your DVD begins to play immediately.+
+When you’re finished, click the Exit button on the DVD remote control to return to the iDVD window.+
+If you are sure your project is the way you want it, you can burn it to a DVD. When you put the final DVD into a DVD player, it begins to play immediately and will continue to play until you stop it.+
If you are ok with one of the iDVD menus and just want the movie to loop, select 'loop movie' like this:
    Also from *iDVD Help*:
+Setting movies and slideshows to loop+
+You can set slideshows, autoplay movies (which start to play immediately when a DVD is inserted into a player, before the DVD menu appears), and movies to repeat continuously, or “loop.” This means they begin replaying immediately after they end. If they include audio, the audio also loops.+
+Looping an autoplay movie is especially useful for creating self-playing presentations, such as those used in tradeshow kiosks. For more information, see Related Topics below.+
+In map view you can see at a glance which slideshows and movies are set to loop. A circular arrow symbol appears in the bottom-right corner of the icon.+
+Here are ways to turn looping on or off:+

+Double-click a slideshow button on the DVD menu to open the slideshow editor. Click the Settings button (shown below) and select the “Loop slideshow” checkbox.+

+Select a slideshow icon in map view, and then press Command-I to open the Slideshow Info window. Select the “Loop Slideshow” checkbox, and then close the window.+

+Click a movie or slideshow button on the DVD menu, or a movie, slideshow, or autoplay movie icon in map view, to select it, and then choose Advanced > Loop Movie or Loop Slideshow.+
+When looping is turned on, a checkmark appears next to the command in the menu. To turn off looping, select it again to remove the checkmark.+

+To turn looping off for a background movie on a menu, open the Menu Info window. With your pointer over the menu (but with no buttons or text items selected), press Command-I. Move the Loop Duration slider to zero.+
+When you’re viewing the burned DVD, you can press the Menu button on the DVD remote control to exit from looping.+
Please post back if these do not address what you are wanting to do.

  • Can You Play Alternate DVD Audio Tracks on Your Mac?

Some commercial releases have alternate audio tracks, such as "Jaws" which in one recent edition features the ability to choose the original theatrical mono track.
Is there any way of choosing this when DVD Player opens on your Mac?
    Thanks

If you click and hold down the mouse button on the Speaker Icon in the DVD Player controls, a drop down menu will appear to let you select the Audio Menu:
and then make your choice there, is that what you wanted to do?

  • Screen Saver starts while playing DVD in Front Row (Tiger)

Just recently, Screen Saver starts while playing a DVD in Front Row. This never used to happen and I suspect it's due to some software update. I know that Leopard users now have Settings within Front Row to disable the Screen Saver...but why is this just now happening in Tiger? Playing a DVD in Front Row used to override whatever Screen Saver settings there were.
Part of the convenience of using Front Row is now lost for me. I don't want to have to adjust my Energy Saver settings each and every time I want to use Front Row to play a DVD. And I'm not ready to upgrade to Leopard yet.
Any solutions? Any way Tiger users can adjust settings in Front Row?

Not sure if this works on Tiger, but this may be the solution you are looking for

  • Watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps

hi all - i gots the following problem
watching dvds in front row = displays sleeps - or at least dulls back until i use the trackpad to wake it
i assumed that this would not be issue with front row as it would be obvious that i wanted the dvd shown full screen - any ideas?

Wow, I never found this before. I played the dvd in front row on best performance (battery setting) and the display went black. I closed front row and opened it in dvd player and it played for 15 min and never went black.
Any way I went into energy saver and adjusted custom to never turn off display then opened front row. That seems to have worked.

  • How can I read several avi files in single DVD with FRONT ROW?

    Hi!
Is it possible to make Front Row read several movie files in a single DVD?
I burned 6/7 avi files in each DVD, but Front Row can't even read the DVD itself!
    Thanks!

    Hi Imcaet
It sounds as though you have made a Data DVD rather than a Movie DVD. Front Row can only read Movie DVDs. All Data must be in iTunes, or in on of the directories it looks in, such as "Movies" in your home directory.
If you need to combine the movies, you will need something like QuickTime Pro 7, which can be purchased from the Apple website. You need to Select All the movie you wish to Append, Copy, go to the End of the movie you wish to Append to, and Paste. You can then save/export the movie in full.

  • Using Airport Express to listen DVD via Front Row and Optical Out

I want to find out if this is possible:
I currently have Macbook Black Core 2 Duo. I enjoy watching DVDs using Front Row. The DVI video cable goes to the projector which is at the back of my room. Since the Macbook is close to the projector, I have to run optical audio cable to the 5.1 Dolby Digital home theater sound system at the front of my room.
I am interested in the AirPort Express because it can play iTunes wirelessly and use optical output to hook up the stereo system.
The question I want to know is if it's possible to connect Airport Express optical output into my Dobly Digital sound system so I can watch and listen DVD movies via Front Row? If not, any other alternatives? When searching through topics, it seems the users said Rogue Amoeba has a lag issue. Even I am not sure it can do optical output capabilites. Any thoughts. Thanks!

KonradL, Welcome to the discussion area!
To stream non-iTunes music to the AirPort Express (AX) you need Airfoil.

  • Playing AVI files in Front Row

Hi, is there anyway I can play avi files in front row without having to convert them to .mov? I could not find any avi plugins for quicktime.

,avi is a container, like .mov, which can contain any number of different codecs.
I would suggest that you download Perian
    http://perian.org/
which converts most codecs to something Quicktime can play.
Whether you can then play them in Front Row is another matter - to be honest I am not sure.

  • Playing Shared Music Via Front Row

I've just got an IMAC Intel core 2 Duo and I'm having trouble playing shared music via Front Row. I have five accounts on my machine and can play any shared music via itunes but cannot access them via Front Row...........any ideas?

If you had the option of storing your media on a separate hard drive, I guess I'd have to ask for a few more details about your current arrangement before making any more recommendations. For example, why do you have five different user accounts, all logged in, all playing iTunes and all sharing songs at the same time? Could you not consolidate all of the media onto the Mac mini (or an external drive plugged into the Mac mini) and have the Mac mini doing all the iTunes sharing? So, when another user wants to listen to some music, they can play it from the Mac mini, rather than the other way around?

  • How can I burn a dvd without themes?

how can I burn a dvd without themes?

    (From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
    Hope this helps!

  • I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.

I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.  The movie plays fine on the macbook if I'm not trying to airplay.  The airplay works fine if I'm not trying to play a movie from the superdrive.  I think my apple TV is Gen 2.

If you get a checkerboard pattern it's because Apple block Airplay Mirroring of protected media.
    VLC Player may work.
