Can you read files stored on the Windows partition through Mac OSX?

I'm new to Mac, getting one soon, so correct me if I'm wrong in assuming that OS X can make shortcut folders to other locations on the disk drive like windows can.
I'm getting a 500GB hard drive and have a decent movie collection to store on the hard drive, and the Macbook Pro is coming preconfigured with 256GB each for Mac and Windows. I won't really put much on the Windows side, so I thought maybe I could put my movies on the Windows side and then create a shortcut over to there and place it on my Mac side desktop, so that when I click on it, it takes me to the folder in Windows which stores the movies, so that I would still have easy access to them but they would be counted under Windows' partition. First off can you make shortcuts like that, going cross partition? And secondly, I just assumed they would open fine as long as I got VLC player, until I read stuff about NTFS and HTS+ and stuff, meaning Mac can't write to Windows and vice-versa, but I think Mac can read Windows or something from the bootcamp drivers.
Do you think this will work? Thanks

Thanks for the feedback.
Any ideas on what this software could be? I'm not sure what to look for.
Would it be a once off program or something I need to run in the background to do it? Not too keen on bogging my computer down with programs to launch at startup or constantly running them.

  • Accessing files on boot camp windows partition and Mac OSx partition

Before I install Windows 7 64 bit on my iMac using Apple's instruction manual, I have a question. The manual states:
*+FAT—Provides better compatibility, allowing you to read and write files on the Windows volume from Mac OS X. This partition must be 32 GB or smaller.+*
*+If you’re installing Windows Vista or Windows 7, the Windows partition must use the NTFS format.+*
I can read, but I want to be sure I understand these two statements as they relate to each other. Because the Windows 7 partition must be NTFS format, does this mean that there is no way to read, write or copy files from one partition to the other, no matter what the partition size is?
If that is the case, I assume the best way to move files from one partition to the other would be to use a flash drive or is that also not possible due to the file format on the flash drive? I also have an external hard drive used for time machine. Any way to use that?
How will I move files from one partition to the other? And yes, I really want to do this.

Could you explain how using an external HD helps? If I wanted to use an external HD for read/write access from both Snow Leopard and Windows (XP and/or 7), would it need to be in a particular format? (No partitions - this would be a new, empty drive.) If, for example, I formatted it as NTFS, could OSX write to it if it were external?
Since I don't have/use files that are bigger than 4GB in size I am able to use FAT32 as file system on the mentioned external harddisk and flash drives.
Whether I use the harddisk or a flash drive for file transport depends for me on the amount of files I have to move.
Up to 8GB of files I move with a flash drive, everything above that I use the harddisk.

  • Can you use Time Capsule on a windows and 2 macs at the same time.

Can you use Time Capsule on a windows and 2 macs at the same time as either a backup for one and a seperate HD drive for two?

    Yes.
From one viewpoint the Time Capsule is just NAS (Networked Attached Storage) and it supports the file sharing protocols necessary for both Windows and Macs.
From the viewpoint of the Macs it can also be used by Time Machine for backups.
As NAS it can be used for storing files, and there are many backup software packages that support NAS on both Windows and Macs.
In addition from a networking point of view it can serve as a router, wireless access point etc.

  • Can you read the iPad in the sun?

can you read an ipad in the sun? DOes the anti glare screen protector make it easier?

I found this from the More like this box on the right.
I use the screen cover from this site http://www.powersupportusa.com/accessories/ipad-2/hd-anti-glare-film.html
works great, but I won't lie and say it's a 100% but it's the best I've found to combat the glare from direct sun.

  • Can you read/write to Mac partition from Windows 7 partition with bootcamp?

Hi there. I am about to take delivery of a new Air and want to install Windows on it. As accessing both simultaneously isn't important to me, I don't mind using boot camp and would like the performance gains (if there are any?) of booting straight into either.
The question is: would I be able to, from Windows, access and edit (have full access to) files stored on the Mac partition?
Furthermore, does anyone know whether I could run itunes on both using the same set of files (i.e. exactly the same itunes whether in OS X or Windows?).
Thanks very much for your help. I have heard contradictory things so wanted to see what the real answer was!
    Thanks,
    Tom.

iTunes has to be somewhere you can write. There are some tips on iTunes probably in the devoted forums.
But writing to Mac partition (HFS+) requires 3rd party driver. Same for writing to NTFS from Mac OS.
I would not recommend MacDrive8 for allowing Windows to write to Mac HFS, but that is and was the first to do so. Paragon-Software has been creating some file system drivers for Windows, Linux and now Mac to go both ways. Most of their products are in the backup & recovery and partitioning area.
Apple has added read-only feature to allow accessing HFS but the feature (and it is not really a service or driver that you can turn on/off or choose to not install, it is part of the Boot Camp package) has been known to need to be renamed/deleted. Not always but will sometimes trigger BSOD. Maybe reading a file with a file name? doubt it but I rename "AppleHFS" and "AppleMNT" so they don't load or function in Windows 7.

  • Can I access my files stored in the hard disk connected to airport extreme when I am away? how?

Can I access my files stored in the hard disk connected to airport extreme when i am away? How?

You can't technically. iPads cannot directly read HDDs like a computer can.
You will need an app liie FileBrowser to do this. Of course all file operations will be done through the App itself.

  • Can you transfer files between two user accounts on the same macbook pro?

Can you transfer files between two user accounts on the same MacBook Pro?
Specifically, I used the Migration Assistant to move music and photos from my old PC to my new MacBook.
Somehow, I missed the fact that it was creating a new user account when it was doing this.  So none of music and photos are in the user account I originally set-up.  Instead, all these files are now in a different account.
I'd like to consolidate all my files on the one user account and delete the other one.
Is this possible and, if so, how do I do it?
    Thank you.

you can crop files from one account to another using the Public Dropbox which every user account has.  Log into the user that has the files you want to move, then drag the folder you want to the new users' dropbox:
I suggest a small scale test on a few files first before moving gigabytes of files.

  • When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other?

When using the migrate tool to migrate from windows to mac, can you use ethernet to connect the computers to each other? In the Migration tool, I was only given the option of choosing the computer when it appeared on the same network, and didn't see an option to connect them to each other. Even though they're both connected to the same network with a wired connection, the migration is painfully slow.

Yes. The following quotation is from About Windows Migration Assistant
These are the preferred network connections, in order:
Use a CAT6-certified Ethernet cable that is in good condition to connect the Ethernet port of the PC directly to the Ethernet port of the Mac or Ethernet adaptor (USB or Thunderbolt). You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
Use CAT6-certified Ethernet cables that are in good condition to connect the Mac and PC to your home network router/hub/switch. You shouldn't use an Ethernet cable that has any kinks in it or is missing connector tabs.
For wireless, use the fastest wireless signal possible (802.11n 5Ghz). Try to have the PC, Mac, and the wireless access point all in the same room close to each other.

    Hello ,
I want to ask some question about ipads \
    How powerful is the iPad?
How useful is it for reading books, newspaper or magazines or for surfing the web?
Can you identify any shortcomings of the device?
    please help me

it's less powerful than your average computer. THink of it like a netbook but with a better processor.
It'll do fine for surfing (although if you browse a lot of flash based sites you will need to get a third party browser since safari doesn't accommodate it)
You may do OK on reading books, papers or magazines, especially if they have apps, but the ipad's screen is backlit, so it doesn't work well outdoors and you may need to fiddle with the brightness so that you don't get eye strain (it's just like doing too much reading from a computer screen)
I would say the biggest short comings are data transfer. Apple's preferred work flow is that everything is done via iTunes or the internet....well people dont' always have 100% reliable always on internet access so you can find yourself in a situation where you can't get things on/off the iPad.
By and large, it's a good device for day to day stuff, but is not a computer replacement.

Not very easily no. If you can get a non-reflective screen cover it might be a bit better, but it probably still won't be as good as, for example, a Kindle device is.
