Can you restore an ipod outside of itunes?

several days ago my computer ceased to recognize my ipod. (i've got ibook g4, latest osx, and 5G video ipod.) i'm not sure the cause. i made a couple of simpletext files to view as notes and put them on the ipod, then ejected in the usual manner. when i reconnected, the ipod would not show in the finder, nor in itunes. but system profiler recognizes an ipod is connected, and the ipod will charge via usb. all i get is the "do not disconnect" screen on the ipod. the only other thing different is, i'm using a borrowed usb/dock cable, rather than my own (which is currently MIA).
my hunch is the ipod needs restoring, but (hey apple, listen up, because this is really stupid) you're supposed to use itunes to restore it. how can i do that if it won't show up? i even went to the support pages, looked up a page on "so your ipod won't show up in the finder or itunes" and from there followed a link telling me to restore the ipod through itunes. is it just me, or is this an oversight? anyway, the question is: any other way to restore an ipod? anyone? beuler? beuler?

1. Have you launched iTunes yourself while your iPod
was connected to the computer? If so, your iPod
still didn't appear in the Device list? If so, you
might have accidentally unchecked the "Open iTunes
when iPod is connected" (or something like that)
tried it, no luck
2. Open Disk Utility and see if your iPod is listed
there. You can select your iPod and try mounting it
from there.
i know what disk utility is, but i've never used it to mount a disk. could you explain how it is done?
3. Do you know of anyone else with a Mac that you
could connect your iPod to and try restoring from his
computer.
can also try this. also i may be able to get a different dock->usb cable to try.
thanks, i'll keep working on it...

  • Can you restore an iPod using Disk Utility?

I put a new hard drive in my 1st gen iPod.
It still shows up in iTunes and music can be transferred over, but when disconnected the iPod shows a folder and exclamation mark so I can't navigate to / listen to any music.
As it's first gen ipod I can't get it to restore or update via iTunes - no options show up to restore or update the software.
Is there any other way I can restore or update the iPod - via disk utility or some other means?
I do have a back up of all the original files that were on the iPod hard drive before I swapped it over.

Hi - thanks, but unless I'm reading the article wrong that won't work for me because you need to use iTunes to restore the iPod and I can't do this - as it's a 1st gen iPod it will only sync with an old version of iTunes and the 'update' and 'restore' tabs don't appear.
So, I'm looking for a way to restore the iPod without having to use iTunes.

  • Can you restore specific items from an itunes back-up disc?

When I back up purchases made only since my previous back-up, how does restoring work if I want to bring back things from my previous back-up as well as my current one? Can I restore certain items only, rather than the whole disc? For example, I'm backing up two seasons of Doctor Who and want to delete from itunes on my computer to save space. It I've done a back-up disc, can I reload only the Doctor Who files and not all the music files, etc? Or do I need to save individual items, such as Dr Who seasons, as data on a separate DVD?
Hope my questions make sense! Thanks in advance for any help on this!

As far as I'm aware iTunes does an all or nothing restore, but then I've never relied upon it so I might be mistaken.
Fast backup for iTunes library  (Windows)
Grab SyncToy  2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time.
If your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes, regardless of the drive letter or path it appears on.
With this method you get a file for file clone so if you accidentally delete/corrupt a single file you can just go and copy that back from the backup.
It's never a good idea to rely on only having one copy of a file, and even worse if that copy is buried inside an archive format. A single error can render the entire archive inaccessible.

  • Can you use two ipods on one itunes account. It let me transfer my purchases, but can i put songs that are on one ipod onto the other that are already on my itunes?

i had an ipod classic and used it for a few years until i got an iphone.
Now I want to return to use it to fit all my songs on, however i now use a different itunes on a different computer.
It let me transfer all my purchases, but won't let me put the songs on that i downloaded from albums, and it won't let me put songs onto it that are on my iphone.

  • Can you report an ipod to Apple/iTunes as stolen so it can't be used by thief?

I was just wondering if there is any way you can report a certain serial number as stolen so that if it is re registered on a new computer you are notified by apple?

    unfortunately not.
all you can do is report the theft to the police and provide the serial # to them.

  • How can i restore my ipod touch 4g (?) without passcode or itunes

Hi and thank you for helping as this is urgent.
I forgot my passcode for my iPod, and guessed it to many times so it got disabled.
The problem is I don't have iTunes and can't get it on my laptop, but need to restore my device. Right now on the screen it has a photo of a USB cord, an arrow, and the iTunes symbol. So, how can I restore my iPod touch without my passcode or iTunes?
    Thank you SO much.

Right now you can't without a computer. Once you get to a computer you can restore it using DFU mode.

I tried to restore my iPod touch4 but iTunes shows "This device isn't eligible for requested build" so what can I do ?

I tried this way to set up hosts and restart my Mac but when I going to restore my iPod touch4 ,it still shows "This device isn't eligible for requested build"
    Thanks for replied me
if anyone has same problem to open their hosts file, here is a short video and you have to type "sudo nano /private/etc/hosts" ,not "sudo nano/private/etc/hosts",remember there is a space between "nano_/private"
This video helps a lot which I just found and it is much easier to fix this problem

If you don't have a computer to which you have previously backed up using iTunes you will need to follow the instructions in the "Use recovery mode" section near the bottom of iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled

You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabilng the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Next, authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials.
If possible, either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.  To do this, right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering different software availbable to assist you with this task.

Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

Are you sure it is 1043? I've never seen that error before. But you can try disabling your security software, connecting the phone to a USB port directly on the computer (not a hub), and trying to restore again.
