Can you restore from the hidden drive if Windows was written over?

Hello all,
Looking for some help here... I friend brought  me his Lenovo 300 (N100) notebook that he said had a virus on it.  Instead of bringing it to me to fix the virus, he first tried reloading windows (xp) from a standard windows XP disk he had from his desktop machine.  The notebook now has Windows working, but of course it's a fresh install, and he lost all his other stuff.   He "said" he didn't allow the install to reformat the drive, just installed over the old one, so the factory hidden partition, so the old programs, etc are still there.
Is there a way to get into the hidden partition and re-install (restore) the original Windows factory setup from it?  I tried hitting F11 to bring up the recovery console, but I just get a similar window as you get from F8, and then it boots into the new windows.  Any other way to get a restored system?
He said he called Lenovo to try and get a recovery CD, but they said they don't sell recovery CD's to out of warranty products anymore - which is why he tried a standard Windows CD.  I looked up the Driver Downloads on the Lenovo website, and it looks like everything might be there for me to rebuild, if he's past getting a recovery from the partition.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hello All,
Well, I guess I jumped the gun!  After I posted my question, I did some more searching and found the info for creating the Rescue & recovery diskette that allows you to re-enable the F11 option in order to access the rescue & recovery partition.
I was able to re-enable the F11, and am restoring the system as we speak.
Thanks for being here!

  • Can you restore from a backup that was made on a previous version of iOS?

    Hello.
I had an iPhone 3GS unning whatever the latest proper version of iOS currently is at the time of writing (4.3.5, is it?) but on Saturday I was on a rather drunken night out and I lost my phone.
    Silly me.
But I was out of contract and the new iPhone (4S or 5 or whatever) is going to be announced on Tuesday next week (just been confirmed by Apple today) so I'm just going to make do with an old, spare Nokia until the new iPhone is available in the UK.
Once the new iPhone launches I will buy it, plug it into iTunes and just restore from backup and I'm back in business.
Except for one thing... The new iPhone will have iOS 5 installed and my last backup before I lost my 3GS was done on iOS 4.3.5.
Is this going to be a problem or can you restore from a backup made with an older version of the OS?
I've never done it before so I don't know.
    J

You "should" have no problem doing that. I say should, because you can't restore a backup made with a higher iOS on a device running a lower iOS, I.E. - you can't restore a backup made from a device running, let's say iOS 4.3.5 on a device running iOS 4.2.10. However, iOS 5.0 will present many new features and since it has not been released, I have no way of stating with certainty that doing as you plan will not present any problems. Past history indicates it won't, but we'll have to wait & see.

  • Can you print from the iPad?

I ordered my iPad on 6/7 but won't get it till 6/24, its on back-order, DARN!! Anyway I have what may be a silly question: Can you print from the iPad using a USB cord from the printer? I pay bills online and like to have a hard copy of the receipt. Really looking forward to getting it.

To gloworm: regarding working with only one app open at a time, that should be taken care of when OS4 is available for the iPad - supposedly in the fall. As for using Air Sharing to print, you have to 1st get your files into the app via wifi from your computer. I have Air Sharing for both my phone and iPad and really like it. Once your files are in the app you just bring them up and touch the bottom left corner of iPad to bring up print. You can then print to any shared printer. I also use PrintCentral and like it for printing as well.

  • Iphone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore, only option available now is to "restore and update" however this will not work, how can you restore from a backup once in recovery mode and only option is "restore and upgrade"? Please help!

iPhone 4 went into recovery mode when trying to restore it. Now the only option iTunes allows is for "restore & upgrade", it is not offer an option to restore from a backup, says that must first do the upgrade, when attempting to do the upgrade the iPhone won't accept it.
How can I restore from a back up in recovery mode when the only option is "restore and upgrade"?
    Please help.

You don't you must restore your phone first and then you will have the option to restore from your backup.

  • Can you print from the ADF with Officejet Pro 8600 (not plus) & how to print checks in correct order

Client has Officejet Pro 8600 I(not plus) They want to print payroll checks out of QuickBooks but when they put the checks in tray 1, it pulls the check that is on the top, which happens to be the last check # in the stack.  Is there a way to print where the printer pulls from the bottom of the check stack as opposed to the top. I've looked and can't seem to find the answer. QuickBooks says we should check with HP and change something in the print drivers?
So I thought it would fix it if they printed the checks from the ADF where I thought I could control if it pulls from the front or back of the stack. When we tried to print from the ADF, it pulled from Tray 1 and we weren't given the option to print from the ADF.   (only Tray 1 & 2...which they don't have the 2nd tray anyway) So does this model, not being the PLUS model, not allow you to print from the ADF. (only scan, copy and fax from the adf?)
If we can't use the ADF for check printing, then how can we get the checks to print in the correct order.  Meaning, the 1st check # to print should be on the check that is on the bottom of that check stack in Tray 1.  Otherwise they have to count out the exact number of checks & place them in the tray.  Or reverse all of them which is not an efficient either! I hope this makes sense.

    Hi @kceacct ,
I see that you would like to know how to print out the checks in order. I will do my best to help you.
The ADF can be used for copying, scanning and faxing.
From the print driver you can only select the tray that you want to print from.
Changing Print Settings in Windows 8.
You would have to load the checks in order from top to bottom in the paper tray, since the printer just pulls the paper in from the top of the stack of paper.
    Have a nice day!

  • Can you restore from last backup, instead of restore from factory settings?

To make this short, my phone is having a few problems. They have been happening ever since my last sync. Is it possible to restore from the last backup, or do I need to do a complete restore? And if the latter, what will be missing after the restore- can I just restore and then put all my music/contacts/video/apps back on? Will I lose any content, such as pictures I have taken on the phone, text messages, calendar events? Is that not what the backup is for?
I believe this is a simple enough question to answer, so thank you in advance!

When restoring an iPhone with iTunes, there are 2 options. From your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection, or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
Your iPhone's backup includes data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, photos in your iPhone's camera roll, and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app. All other data transferred to your iPhone from your computer via the iTunes sync process should remain on your computer.
Photos in your iPhone's camera roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.
Contact info and calendar events is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. Not a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup alone for this data and the same for photos in your iPhone's camera roll since your iPhone's backup includes other data.
When restoring, your iPhone will be erased and the firmware will be reinstalled. After the firmware is installed, you will be prompted to restore from your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection. This must be followed by a sync with iTunes to transfer your selected iTunes content including 3rd party apps, and any photos from your computer.
If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup or with the data included with the backup, restoring your iPhone from the backup will also restore the problem.

  • TS4036 Can you restore from an earlier backup then go to a newer backup

Trying to recover some old app info need to know if I can restore to an older backup get info then go back to a newer backup

It would work, if icloud still has the older backup.  I would definitely suggest that you perform a backup to iTunes.  Many users have had problems with restores (losing pictures and other datat).  So after you are done with the older icloud backup, restore from the iTunes backup.
Even if iTunes says it’s backing up your iPhone or iPad to iCloud, all you have to do when your device is connected is right-click on it in iTunes and choose “Backup.” It’s that easy.

  • After installinf ios6 I lost all contacts, I could not get them back so I hit restore. This restored the phone to 4 months back. The phone did not give me the option to restore from the cloud. is there anyway I can now restore from the cloud?

How many backups are in the cloud? When I installed ios6 it backed up to the cloud, since then I restored the phone trying to regain my contacts. At this point the used the last backup I performed on the computer 5 months ago. I never had the oppertunity to restore from the cloud. Is there anyway I can now restoe from the cloud and would it have the backup that was performed when I installed ios6?

Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.  This will erase your phone.  Then you will go through the setup screens again as you did when your phone is new, and when given the option, select Restore from iCloud Backup.

  • How To or Can You Sync from the Apple Tv and Not I tunes???

Ok so Apple is not fixing the problem with the Apple Tv staying in the device list of I-Tunes...not happy about it but whatever. So does anyone know if you can reestablish communication from the Apple Tv, so you do not have to keep going to the computer somewhere else in the house to do it???
Any idea on how to make it appear again in the device list without having to quit i-tunes and re start it on the computer itself, can it be done remotely from the Apple Tv??
Any idea on if having an I-Pod touch controlling it via the network instead of the Apple Tv remote would help out if nothing can be done with the regular remote for the Apple Tv?

I have not tried these things yet, but have seen others who have and none of it worked. But the question is can any of those things prevent I-tunes from dropping the Apple TV from the device list. It did not matter if the Apple Tv was hard wired or not, the wireless strength is very strong and I can still access i-tunes via the network I just can not play my own movies. I do not think I can fix the problem I think Apple has a larger issue with this. I'm not the only one with this problem and see no fixes. So I'm just trying to find a work around from someone who knows more than me, until Apple fixes it...
But thanks for the suggestions anyways

  • Can you restore from Time Machine backup to a smaller drive?

My 2008 Air's original hard-drive just died. I have a recent Time Machine backup. Since the laptop isn't under warranty, I am looking at buying a replacement hard-drive on my own (either SSD or 'standard'). My question is, if I was using ~70Gigs (and had a Time Machine backup to that effect) and place a 64G hard-drive into the laptop and attempt to do a Time Machine restore... what will happen? Will I be able to pick and choose what to leave out? Or will the entire restore fail? Thank you.

As long as there is sufficient space on a drive you can restore to any drive. However, be sure the drive is properly partitioned and formatted. In your case you can not fully restore 70 GBs to a 64 GB SSD, but you can restore the operating system and some of your data. That means you cannot do a full restore but will need to pick and choose after you install OS X.
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Trying to install SL on a new hard-drive for my iMac, when asked which disk to install on it gave me no options, i followed advice from another forum and created a partition, now can't boot from the new drive at all. Help?

I've had **** with my iMac, the hard-drive failed so i replaced it with a new 1TB Samsung drive. Then when i tried to install SL from the install disk, all went to plan until it asked me which drive i wanted to install it on, where it came up with a box where my options should have been, but instead it didn't give me any options to install it on any drive i.e. it asked which drive i wanted to install it on but no drives came up to select.
So i followed the advice from another forum, look at the 'Extended Hard-drive preparation' response
    ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/10576009#10576009 )
After following these instructions i have now got a new partition, but when i restarted my computer to install SL on the drive, the option to boot from the drive is now not available, now i must boot from the install disk, whereas before i was able to boot from either the install disk or the hard drive. The hard drive is still visible in disk utility as it always has been, but i am now unable to boot from it, let alone install SL.
Please help my iMac has been broken for months and i've been trying to fix it for so long and am getting problem after problem. Thank you!

    Hi db2
That off the shelf MS-DOS / FAT-32 drive needs to re-partitioned GUID Partition Table / Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you can install OS X and Startup your Intel iMac from it.
    1. Boot from your original install or retail SL DVD and open Disk Utility.
    2. Highlight the new HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.
    3. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button.
    4. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.
    5. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply button.
    6. Once thats done, then you can do a clean SL Install, Restore from TM , your old HD or  Bootable Clone.

  • Can you restore only the files that have recently changed with Time Machine?

    Greetings,
Before i ask my question,  i'll give a bit of background as to my issue.
I was editing my $PATH within the ~/.bash_profile file and accidently overwrote my $PATH. So now simple terminal commands such as open or 'ls' no longer work. In order to edit the file, I need to change the defaults to allow me to see hidden files, but I can't do that because the defaults command stopped working after I screwed up the $PATH. Also, I used the echo commadn to verify that the previous $PATH no longer exists. The environment variable now just points to an empty folder I accidently set it to in TextEdit.
So, I have Time Machine running, and it backs up to a Time Capsule. I have the hourly backups that I can restore to, but when I start the restore, it crawled up towards 200,000 files before I finally decided that wasn't right and decided to post a question (it's still "preparing to copy"). I had to select the OS X Volume to restore from my one hour old backup, since I can't restore the folder the bash_profile exists within (it is hidden) or so I assumed.\
Now my question, it seems that Time Machine is doing a full restore of every file in the backup and not just the files it incrementally changed between its hourly backups. Why does it do this? My restore process should have just been a couple of minutes, restoring a couple hundred or so files at most. Restoring several hundred thousand files seems stupid when the I select a backup that is one hour old. Is there anyway to set it up so I can restore incrementally?
    Thanks,
    Johnathon.

A quick note, I performed the restore from within the Time Machine while booted into OS X; the restore did not take place in the special bootup tool available. Why it does not provide an option to simply restore the files changed over the last hour is mind boggling to me

You are making this way too complicated. In Terminal, choose Shell > New Command…. In the text box that opens, enter bash --noprofile . A Terminal window will open that does not use your .bash_profile, so the bad $PATH will not be an issue. Now you can remove, move, or edit .bash_profile.
