Can you run Lightroom off an external hardrive?

I need to get a new laptop and am considering buying a HP Stream 14. It has only got 32GB of storage on it offline so relies on cloud storage mainly. I will have an external hardrive too though.
Will I be able to run Lightroom on this? I don't mind if all my files are up in the sky but I don't want to get this if I won't be able to continue to use Lightroom to process photos.

My apologies, I'll try and explain myself a bit better.
My main question is; is there anyway for me to get and use Lightroom on the HP Stream if it only has 32GB of storage on it (let's say I had nothing else on it so the full 32GB is available for Lightoom if necessary). I can put the photos and catalogue on the external harddrive no problem but it's the programme itself and running it that I am worried about. I'm not sure if an SSD is compatible with the HP Stream (don't honestly know what it is, actually!) so maybe give me an answer if I a) couldn't use an SSD and b) could.
I'd really like this laptop but there isn't much point in me getting it if I can't use Lightroom on it. But in order to do so I don't mind buying some extra storage devices or storing photos or the catalogue wherever necessary.
Here's the specs for the HP Stream in case they are of any use;
Windows 8.1 64
AMD Quad-Core A4 micro-6400T
35.6 cm (14") diagonal HD BrightView display
2GB DDR 3 Memory and 32GB eMMC storage
Ultra thin, fanless design perfect for computing on the go
And here's the link to HP's site on it;

  • Can you run bootcamp off LaCie 1TB thunderbolt external HD?

Is this possible as it's a high speed connection?  Can I run games from it?
And as i'm not too familiar with indepth computer knowledge - any chance of a guide on what I might do if possible?

  • Can you run applications off Time Capsule

I am thinking about getting a MacBook Air, but the smaller hard drives have me worried a bit about space. I have a Time Capsule that has plenty of room and I am wondering if it is possible to move applications over to the Time Capsule and run them over the wireless network. I imagine performance would be a big issue--especially for data-heavy games.
    I have several questions:
    1. Is it possible to run applications in this manner?
    2. If so, is performance so bad that it is not worth it?
    3. If applications do not run (or do not run well), would there be any major performance issues with moving songs, photos, movies over to the external drive?
    Any information/advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

The TC is really not designed to do this.. in general applications should be on the local drive.. data can be moved off is you need to but running applications over network is not even always possible.
Performance over wireless for sure can be an issue.. !
The issue with moving data to the TC.. is backup. IF you do this, where are you going to backup the files.. the TC has no built in backup for itself..
It is better to get a real nas with decent fast raid and built in backup..
Or use a computer in the network as a quasi server.. eg a mini.. although you still need to attach fast drives by some means to it.

  • Can I run Panther off an external hard drive

    Hi all,
First of all, let me preface the following with this caveat: I'd describe myself as a novice when it comes to all things MAC, so please bear with me.
I read earlier posts on running OS X on an external drive, but I have a slightly specialized problem. My hard drive on my Powerbook seems to have an error (I tried wiping it clean and reloading Panther, but it gives me disk error messages part way through the process). Instead of taking the computer in and having an internal drive placed in it, I'm wondering if I could purchase an external hard drive and use that as I would my internal one by putting OSX on it. Is this possible at all? Or am I not conceptualizing it properly?
I'd appreciate any help you could give me on this, as well as any suggestions about repairing the disk error (beyond simply replacing it).
    A million thanks.

    "Is this possible at all?"
That's entirely possible. Simply hook up the drive, then boot from the Panther install CD/DVD and isntall it on that drive. Make sure it's a FireWire drive though.
However if your computer is out of warranty, you can replace the internal drive yourself, with instructions from:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide
Of course if it's still under warranty, have Apple fix it for free.

  • Can you run framemaker off the network

Hello, I seem to recall that you cannot install Framemaker on the network and run the application off of the network, but was wondering if anyone here might know for sure. Some people that I know are thinking about doing that and I am wondering if it will really work. Thanks in advance for any assistance you might be able to offer.

I seem to remember that there was some kind of FrameMaker volume licensing for networked sites, perhaps eight years ago or so. If you have a lot of seats - perhaps even are on an Adobe volume license program - your vendor or an Adobe volume-licensing customer service agent can help.

  • Can you run deltas off of an Infoset query datasource?

    Hey Gurus of BW,
We had a consultant come in and setup an infoset datasource in R/3.  Then in BW set up that datasource as a feed into a cube using delta pulls.  The delta init pull pulls all the data, but then the deltas never pull any data.  Is this even possible?
    Thanks,  Ken

    Ken,
I think generic datasource created on Infoset.
Provide safety interval - lower limit as 1 for delta field(change date or creation date) & check.
Loading generic datasource data directly into cube(addition) may create a duplicate data. Due to safety interval every time it pulls data from last day to current.

  • Can I run apps on an external drive?

Can you run apps saved on external drives? Is it possible to run them and save your app data only to the external drive?

    1. It varies depending on the application; ones which used an installer as opposed to drag-copying them to the Applications folder may not run.
    2. If the folders containing it are stored on the external, yes. This may require creating symbolic links or putting the entire home folder on that drive.

  • Running Lightroom - NAS or external Hard drive?

I am a photographer currently running a windows laptop with LR and PS (CC) and using the internal hard drive on my Laptop to store all my images (24k of the blighters!).
I currently do all my editing on this laptop but it is starting to 'creak' under the weight of all those images. I have decided I want to move all the images off and on to a storage/backup configuration and use the internal hard drive of the laptop purely for processing power to drive photoshop and lightroom etc.
I have also recently bought a Mac desktop computer which I run from my upstairs home office/bedroom and have just installed LR/PS (CC) on it as well - but havent started using it yet!
I will probably do most of my editing on the MAC upstairs but there will also be occasion where I will want to use my laptop with Lightroom for when I do tethered photography shoots and to do a bit of editing when i'm away in hotels and occasionally when im being lazy and want to edit downstairs in my front room at home.
I have looked at the option of getting 2 external hard drives with an enclosure and plugging them into the back of the MAC (USB3) and using 'carbon copy clone' so the 2 disks are mirrored.
I would then use another external hardrive to plugin into the back of the enclosure to do a weekly backup (take this off site).
The only problem with this is that when I want to use my Laptop I have to take the hard drives out of the MAC and then plugin them
into the Laptop it in order to access the latest catalog and images? - and taking the hard drives and enclosure around with me kind of defeats the point of having the laptop?
So the options I have considered is to either:
Add a 'WD My Book' off the external hardrives so I can access the catalog/images wirelessly from the cloud from my laptop  - but not sure how this would work and also
how would the MAC get its latest catalog changes from the WD My Book (after I have made changes to the catalog when using the laptop)?
       2. The other option I recently looked at was the NAS route....which kind of makes sense as presumably there will only
be one catalog residing on the NAS which I download to the either the Laptop or Mac depending on which I want to use
and then access the images from the NAS when I do my editing. Presumabaly I then have to do some sort of synchronisation
of the catalog when I have finished editing and move between the laptop and MAC?
The other question is how do I access the NAS? I dont currently have a home network. I do have a wireless
router in my front room downstairs from which I access broadband internet  - I then use a repeater (poor signal) when im using the MAC in the office upstairs
    -  wouldnt accessing the NAS wirelessly be slow? (Dont really want to start using cables around the house)
Will there be probelms moving betweek Windows and Apple OS environments?
Any ideas or help with this would be hugley appreciated as my brain is starting to fry and I just want to get back to taking photographs  :-) !!
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

If all you want to do on the laptop is a bit of editing and then print when you get home, the Smart Preview method described above will be fine.
There is no problem going from windows to mac.
The problem you might find is that when you come home from a job, you need to transfer the files to the external drive and then show LR on the mac where the files are...pretty easy but you have to remember to do it before you start mucking around.
The other solution that a FEW of us use, is to put the LR catalog files on Dropbox. This allows you to have the current catalog always on both computers. The only drawback I know of is that you absolutely must carefully let the machine update dropbox before you close it (or at least before you open the file on the other computer). If you do that and use smart preview, you will find you can do almost anything. Remember, you still need to get the files to the external drive when you get home (first step) and then use LR on the mac to "find folders"
If you DO want to ocassionally print from the laptop, you could carry a USB key with the original files copied to it from the external drive (I often take the last couple of months worth with me)...name the USB drive the same name as the external drive and LR will no know the difference...
It feels complicated at first, but once you get into the LR mindset it will work just fine.

  • How do I run iTunes off an external hard drive?

I have an 80GB laptop which is getting pretty full, so I've added a 500GB external hard drive with the intention of transferring my music files (amongst other things) to the external drive, freeing up space on the laptop. This has proved (almost) more trouble than it's worth...
Initially I simply copied iTunes over to the external drive using Windows Explorer. Surfing the apple discussions, however, convinced me that I ought to do the "consolidate library" thing as well (which resulted in me duplicating the files on the external drive). Finally sorted that out, deleted the music files on the hard drive, and discovered that my music library was allegedly "empty". Further surfing on apple discussions made me decide to copy the various iTunes library files from the main iTunes folder back to the hard drive. This has resulted in iTunes being unable to open, due to an "unknown error".
I'm ready to give up! Anyone out there successfully running iTunes off their external drive? How do you do it?

Follow up: My next move was to copy my iTunes folder back onto the hard drive. I had only been doing this for ten minutes (the process took twelve hours the previous time I did it) when iTunes was up and running again, and indeed "seeing" all my music files on the external drive. I cancelled the copy process, deleted all the newly copied iTunes music files from the hard drive, leaving all other files intact, and everything seems fine. The problem is now solved, but I'd nevertheless be grateful if someone could explain to me what was going on!
    Thanks
    Ian

  • Can I run Lightroom 5 on an iPad2? or do I need Lightroom Mobile for that?

I just upgraded to Lightroom 5. About to take an extended photo trip to Africa. I've been offered the use of an iPad2 so I don't have to carry my laptop with me - only thing is, I want to be able to use Lightroom on it. Anyone know if it's possible to put Lightroom on an iPad2? Or do I need the mobile version of Lightroom? And is that a separate purchase?

You can't run Lightroom on an iPad; it is an OS X application not an iOS application.
Lightroom Mobile requires an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Do you have that? It's not available if you purchased the standalone version of Lightroom.

But sorry for my ignorance. I understand how you mean it, but I don't know how to do it. I'm scared to lose the settings/edits of the images.

  • Can you run Adobe Photoshop CS version 8 on Yosemite?

Can you run Adobe Photoshop CS version 8 on Yosemite?

Well if you want permanent license Adobe software, here is the price list for the CS6 catalog .  Creative Suite 6
Just know that with the exception of Adobe Camera Raw updates, CS6 will have maintenance updates, but not the features of CC 2014.
The rental model called Creative Cloud means you will have the software installed on your Mac and you can work with your files as before, it's just that activation depends on a $50 monthly fee. Upgrades are piped in at no further cost, and you have the freedom to switch platforms and interface languages. You activate on up to two computers, PC, Mac or mixed. 20 GB online storage for collaboration, and you can also store and sync your settings and custom presets. Typekit if you'd like to try new and difference fonts.
Look at it this way, it's not a big deal if you are in business. You rent many things and this is probably not your largest monthly expense.
