Can you run your iTunes folder on a network / wifi drive?

I currently have a Macbook Pro but intend to get either a Macbook air (with the SSD,) or possibly the netbook / tablet Apple are probably releasing in Q3 this year. My only problem is that both have (or are likely to have,) a smaller hard drive than is ideal.
As I only use my Macbook to update my iPhone / iPod I don't need the iTunes library on it all the time and so would like to run it off a home wifi network drive
Can this be done? I can only find information about wired external drives.

Can you have all of your itunes files (movies, songs, apps) on a external hard drive and access it through itunes?
yes, that's the way i have my library set up - all my media files are living on an external HD while the library files are located in my local iTunes folder.
do this:
go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point +*iTunes media folder location+* to the external. on the same tab, ensure +*copy files to ... when adding to library+* is check marked.
next, go file > library > organize library > consolidate files. iTunes will copy all your media files to the external. depending on how large your library is, this can take a while so be patient.
when iTunes has finished, verify that all is in order (files play, no "!" next to any files, etc.). you can then delete the contents of your local iTunes music (or media) folder to make room on your boot drive.
keep in mind that, with this setup, the external must be mounted on your desktop before you launch iTunes or it will default back to your local iTunes folder.
alternatively, you could just copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes media folder) to the external, launch iTunes *while holding the option key*, click on +choose library+ when prompted, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.

Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

The procedures below are for "moving" your library but as long as you don't delete it from your internal drive you are basically backing up.

Simple answer:  Copy your whole iTunes folder to the external drive.  For subsequent backups you might want to learn about cloning and using a tool that only does incremental backups of recently changed items rather than copying all your files each time.

  • How do you transfer your itunes library from an external hard drive?

I've just bought a new internal hard drive for my macbook because I've run out of space. I'm planning on putting my itunes library on an external hard drive then putting it on the new internal hard drive... but i have no idea what the best way to do that is, since it isn't just the files that are important, my playlists and all the changes to song names need to stay intact. and also i'm gonna put snow leopard on the new hard drive if that makes any difference?
Hope some one can help me find the best way!

I have much the same problem. I have my iTunes files on an 80GB external drive along with my iPhoto files. Currently, my MacBook Air sees and operates from the iTunes setup on the 80GB drive. To provide more space to handle these files I got a 500GB portable external drive. Now I want to bring the iTunes files back into my MBA and, when complete, put them out on the 500GB drive from which I'll operate my iTunes. This might be simpler if the MBA had two USB2 ports instead of one. I've tried the method noted in "Transferring Your iTunes Library" (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/), but couldn't seem to get the 80GB files back to the MBA such that iTunes would see them there. (I copied the files over, but the link's broken.) Ideas?
    Thanks in advance

  • Can you move your system onto a new, larger hard drive?

OK, so I bought a 4 GB RAM upgrade and a 320 GB 7200 rpm hard disk to beef up my Mini. But it has a lot of apps installed and I don't relish the thought of re-installing it all from scratch. So my question is - Can you migrate the entire system onto another, bigger hard drive, realizing that it will go onto a larger disk partition than it came from? Right now I have the 320 GB disk in an external USB case. So can I back everything over to this USB drive and make it bootable and then swap the disks?

OK campers. This is how it went down. I bought an IOGear external eSATA case for the 320 GB drive. After fooling around a bit I finally figured out how to get the drive initialized so it showed up. I then downloaded SuperDuper and backed all files from the old 120 GB over to the new drive. I selected the new drive as startup disk to make sure I could boot from it. Having successfully done that, I went to Other World Computing's site for Mini Upgrades, and played their installation video on my laptop. I followed the video instructions and had the new RAM and hard disk installed in about 20 minutes. One thing they don't use in the video is an anti static wrist strap. I had one and used it. I highly recommend to all attempting this, to get one at Radio Shack. They are a cheap insurance against damaging your Mac with static electricity. All in all, this was an easy upgrade and I am writing this on the "new" Mini, which is running sweet, with lots of 'elbow room'.

    Hello dreid20,
Indeed, you can move your iTunes Library to a network volume. The only stipulation to keep in mind is that you'll need to be connected to this volume before launching iTunes for it to function properly.

  • Can you put your iTunes data on your airport and then have your computers with the same apple id sync to this music/ and play list / podcast / movies / iTunes u?

I have a laptop and desktop can I sync my itunes to a master libary on a nas or my airport extream? this would be similar to syncing my devices to my imac (iPad, iPhonce, ect.)

two answers as I am unshour to what you want to do:
    Setup homeshareing or:
    1) QUIT not just Close iTunes if it open
    1) Make a folder on the shared disk
    2) Move the "Users/username/Music/iTunes folder you want to share with all the devices to the folder on the shared disk
    3) Make that folder accessable by all the users you want to access it.
    4) Hold the "Option/alt" key down and click iTunes and it will ask if you want to "Choose a Library"
    5) click "Choose a Library" and choose the one on the shared disk
    6) Do this on evey meachine you want to have access to this library
    8) REMBER THAT IF YOUR NOT CONNECTED TO YOUR SHARED DISK THEN YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS YOUR LIBRARY but you can choose librays at any time by using step 4 and you can have as meany librarys as you like.
I hope this answers your question

  • Can you sync your iTunes from a iPad straight to a iPod, is there a connecter to do this?

Can you sync iPad to iPod with a connector?

You can't, connecting an iPad to iPod to copy music between them isn't supported. If it's an iPod Touch and it's iTunes puchased music then you may be able to re-download it via the Purchased tab in its iTunes store app, or if you've subscribed to iTunes Match (and uploaded your music to it from your comptuer) then you can use that. Otherwise you will need to sync them via your computer's iTunes

  • Can I run my iTunes library from an external hard drive?

My iTunes library is too big and I need to set it up to operate from an external drive.
How can I copy it to an external and run it out of the existing MAC?

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Can I store my iTunes library on a network hard drive (nas)

I have an iMac that is really quickly running out of space on the internal hard drive, only have a about 15GB left and my libary is still getting bigger. I have a lacie network space on my network (1TB) i was wondering if i could move the itunes libary to it and still be able to sync my iPhone, iPod and use airplay, ect...
    all help appreciated.

I thnk this link from MacMuse may be just what you need. I ran iTunes off an EHD on my old PC due to lack of HD space & it worked great.
