Can you search for something and exclude a file type?

Is there an option available to search with the qualifier, "is not" so that you can avoid searching, say, emails when you are just looking for files otherwise?

Use NOT:

  • Can I search for pdf and word documents at the same time in finder?

I often want to search for more than one file type at a time - for instance pdfs and word docs in a directory, or Jpgs, GIFs, PNGs etc.
Can I do this in the finder in one go (so I can save it as a folder I can then select when I want to)?
I tried typing OR between the 'tokens' it creates, but then it just searches for OR - so not as intelligent as one would think?!
Surely there must be a way to do something as simple as this?
    regards
    Rob

Forget the whole "tokens" business (I think that is a pretty useless "improvement" to constructing Spotlight searches). Hit command-F to bring up the search window, and set your first criteria, in the example I changed it from the default Kind to Created Date, to keep the number of results manageable. Now hold down the Option key and click on the "+" at the end of the criteria line, it will change to "..." and you get a new criteria line. From the dropdown menu choose "Any" if necessary (this will give you the Boolean OR), then enter what you want in the first sub-head. To get a second sub-head OR criteria click the "+" at the end of the Any line.
I don't generate many MS Word docs, so I just stopped in the example above after typing Microsoft, since that brought up all the MS anything I have from this year (a couple of Power Point thingies sent to me by friends).

  • How can you search for outlook email folders quickly?

I am connected to my work outlook email system and within outlook I have circa 500+ folders. From the iPhone you can see all the folders in the email account but the list is (a). expanded {which makes the list huge} and (b). there appears to be no facility to search for a folder.
Normally in other areas of the iphone OS, obviously you pull down (rather than pushing up) and you are shown the search box.
This appears to have been missed in this area of the OS so all you have is your finger to scroll through the list - I am sure that I am not the only one who has found this problem as it is very difficult to use the iphone without a search facility or at least not expanding all the folders.
It takes me 5-10 minutes to find a folder for example...
    Regards,

On your desktop, go to the store and click on the movies tab --> (Great Movies, Great Prices)

  • Youtube or AppleTube, can you search for anything or is this censored?

I just tried to search for a band i heard of, they posted many of there videos on youtube, yet after many attempts the search engine can not find the videos, why is this if i can search on youtube itself and find them?

You're right about the newly uploaded h.264 content - odd that it isn't available straight away.
I probably don't "get it" yet, but I'm a bit more interested in it than I was when it was first announced so I may not be a lost cause
One man's inane comment is another's philosophical observation....or perhaps tongue in cheek sarcasm. Either way I hope it delivers what you want soon as it's obviously bugging you quite a bit - I can fully understand that if you use YouTube regularly then AppleTv doesn't really deliver the same experience you've been accustomed to.

  • The Help Tab (OSX ML) where you search for something does not work

If I click "Help" and then search "expand" it will show me where expand is. But in CS6 when I clicked it the command would go through and pull up the page to expand pixels. Instead, I have to go find it. It works in every other Adobe app I use except Photoshop CC.
I am on the latest version and on CC

    Hi Peter
Thanks a lot for your help (and sorry for not having answered quicker, but my boss gave me a more urgent task last week...).
Anyway, I did what you suggested (re-importing into a brand new project), and then the search for synonyms really worked! But, being a sceptical person, I did the same with another project, and with that one, it did not work. So, what I did next was compare all the settings of these two projects, and I found a difference.
RH8 now contains a function that's called 'Teilzeichenfolgensuche' (I don't know the English expression, but have a look at the attached picture: this is a screen shot from the second page when I generate WebHelp). After having done several tests, I came to the following conclusions:
    Search for synonyms does not work in HTML-Help, but it does work in WebHelp (and maybe others, but they are not relevant for me, so I did not test them);
Search for synonyms does only work, when the function 'Teilzeichenfolgensuche' is NOT activated.
Could maybe somebody test this, too, and post here whether my conclusions are really correct?
Btw: This fact is not mentioned in the RH-Manual; actually, this function 'Teilzeichenfolgensuche' is not even mentioned there (at least not in the German edition)!!!
Can hardly wait to see your feedback; thanks again for everybody's support!

  • Can you search for videos in the iTunes store?

When I go to the music videos section of the iTunes store, it looks like I can only search through a long list. Is there any way to search for a specific music video in the iTunes Store?

    Hi and welcome.....
Select iTunes music store on the left side of the iTunes window. You will see a search field.
Type in the name of the music video there, then press Return or Enter on your keyboard.

  • I CANNOT CLOSE THE FIRST TAB WHEN I SEARCH FOR SOMETHING AND CLOSE A SECOND TAB IT WILL NOT LET ME CLOSE THE FIRST TAB

I CANNOT CLOSE THE FIRST TAB AFTER I TYPE IN A SEARCH
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == I UPGRADED TO 3.6

I have the same problem and tested it in Safe Mode, and did the disable the add-ons thing. Everything went OK, even up to the last add-on. There wasn't a hint of the problem anymore, so I went back to regular use of FF (3.6.12) again. WELL, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN!!! I agree with the person who said that your supposed troubleshooting is B.S. You blame the user instead of saying something useful like "OK, we heard you (and over two dozen others) and we know it's not your doing, and it's OUR PROBLEM, and we're going to look into it and figure out how to fix it, AND we'll get back to you when we do and tell you how to fix it too." THAT's the kind of answer we FF users want to hear, not some claptrap about how WE the users didn't try hard enough to fix it on our own!

  • Can you search for more than one person in a photo

Let's say you named all the faces in iphoto and now you want to search for a photo that contains two particular people, for example I want iphoto to find all the pictures that have Bob and Mary in that shot.
Is there a way to do this. I tried and it finds Bobs and Mary's pictures but not the ones where they are together? Maybe there is a way by writing Bob + Mary and then iphoto will find all those pictures?
    Thanks

It will work with any of the smart album criteria - file menu ==> new smart album
The easiest way to see is to take a look at what is available there - and make a smart album or two - if you don't like them just drag them to the iPhoto trash and do another one

  • How do you get the iPhone to take you to a direct message when you search for something in Spotlight Search?

Everytime I search for  a message, the iPhone takes me to the bottom of the text screen. How do I find that exact message without having to search by myself? Are there any options to change this?

    You aren't crazy.
Adding the photo to contacts on the computer gets you the smaller pix when people call.
Assign the photo on the phone itself and you get full-size pix.
Additionally I took a few test photos from the iphone and tried setting them to contacts. This didnt work either.
So, that certainly should work. Try it again? Try it with a brand new contact, maybe it is not overwriting a previously existing picture.
I suppose there is a small possibility that Apple thought this differing behavior was a bug instead of a feature and "fixed" it with a recent update, but I doubt it.

  • In the iTunes Store, when you search for something, on the left side of screen there is a pane under "iTunes Essentials" called "Playlists"

Sometimes you will get a list of five or so matching playlists and a "MORE" option. When you clicked on this in the past it would show a list of other searched matches. But now it simply dumps you right back to the current page. Has this search capability been removed for some reason? It was working just a couple weeks ago and mysteriously stopped. I've tried on several different computers, in different locations.
Does this have something to do with the whole PING deal, they want us to share playlists with only people we follow or know?

  • Trying searching for something and when i hit search nothing happens.

I uninstalled firefox because when I type something in the search bar and hit search (or enter) nothing happened. So I reinstalled it and have the same problem as before. Please Help!!!

    '''''Download the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ Mozilla Search Reset]''''' {web link}
This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets
your search preferences and home page to their default values,
and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar
    searches, and the home page.

  • Can you search for a particular date in the past to locate a file in the time machine

  • ONCE YOU SEARCH FOR SOMETHING HOW DO YOU RETURN TO THE HOMEPAGE WITHOUT EXITING

I DONT SEE THE BACK ARROWS

You can open a new tab to return to the about:newtab page with the thumbnails of visited web pages.<br />
If you have set the home page to this about:newtab page then you can click the home button on the right end side of the Navigation Toolbar.<br />
You do not get an enabled back button to go back to the about:newtab page if other pages are opened from this page.

  • How can I search for details in job log files

    Hi,
I'm looking for a specific entry in the job log.  I don't know when it was written (other than the date), to find the log without trial and error, I need a specific time to open the correct one in IDC.
The entry was written by the modifyADSuser pass and it would have an userID tag in the log file but there are many hundreds a day for me to hunt through.  If I could find where identity center pulls the log files from I could either use a SQL select (if it's held in the database) or text search (if it's held in a folder) to zero in on the correct log file.  Does anyone know where the information that's shown in the IDC job logs is stored?
    Thanks,
    Pete

Thanks for the response, I checked MC_LOGS and that looks to be the same detail that is available in the management console, basically the rows displayed in the job log.  Do you know the table relationship after MC_LOGS, what's the tale name for the data (even if encrypted) that details each pass etc?
    Thanks,
    Pete
