Can you stack virtual copies?

Curious if this is possible?

Yes, Mike. By default they are stacked.
One difficulty is selecting them afterwards - read the bit about virtual copies in

  • Can you install 2 copies of OS X?

    On the same Mac?
I like to mess about installing different bits of software but sometimes removing it can be a pain and you can end up with all sorts of unwanted junk on there.
It occurred to me it might be nice to have 2 installs of OS X on the same machine - one nice and clean and the other as a sandpit environment.  And choose which to boot at startup.
Is this easy to do?  And is it covered with 1 OS X license?
    Thanks

Please check the SLA choosing Software/Mountain Lion (unfortunately, they've changed the format and copy/paste is just about impossible now):
    http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/
Here is an excerpt from the OS license agreement:
    A. Preinstalled and Single-Copy Apple Software License
Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, unless you obtained the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or under a volume license, maintenance or other written agreement from Apple, you are granted a limited, non- exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer at any one time. For example, these single-copy license terms apply to you if you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware.
    B. Mac App Store License
If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license: to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running OS X Lion or OS X Snow Leopard (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control
Reading further, you can run 2 virtual copies of ML and you can install it on as many machines as you own and control, but there does appear to be a limit to one copy only per machine.

  • Can not find virtual copies in Windows folder.

I can not remember to have encountered this before, so here I go: I just created a virtual copy of some photos from my summer holiday, and all works well. But when I needed to access these photos going the Windows' way (Windows/My Pictures that is), the virtual copies do not appear in my YYYYMM folder. Going back to LR though, they will appear there with a /Copy 1 extension. RIghtclicking the VC, then "Show in Explorer" will highlight the original in the folder, the VC still not being there. Part of the frustration is that I can not remember this happening before (or maybe it has), so I'm wondering if I by accident have changed any settings.
    Running LR 4.1 on Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thanks in advance.

My only point, was an observation that there is very little actual practical difference between a virtual copy and a "master" ANYWAY.
So you have 1 master (an actual raw) and 10 VC’s. What happens to the VC’s if the master gets corrupted?
If your master has say Adobe Standard as the DNG Profile but the VC has a custom DNG profile, what happens to the VC if that profie goes missing or gets corrupted? Try it.
If by "master", you mean the Raw file on disk, then if that is corrupted (something I have never yet experienced IIRC; although I still backup against this possibility) then certainly, all images derived from that will suffer. However adding VCs does not increase the absolute risk of that. The way I was using "master", was to refer to the one LR metadata set which, unlike a VC metadata set, currently asserts a functional link to the source file. If that LR metadata set were to get corrupted, (something I have never yet experienced either IIRC, although I still backup against that possibility too) then I might be glad of a VC which I could immediately promote to that role and status instead.
Certainly bad things may happen to a VC if a required external file is lost or changed - but these are exactly the same bad things, as if the exact same events had happened for the "master" version alongside. I do take the point that there is protection in redundancy - no question - and also that instantly written-out metadata is a useful separate backup of one's work (as I mentioned, I'd be glad if VCs could get the same thing too somehow, someday).
One-to-many dependency on a single source file can make some good things happen too, though, which may be judged worth any potential added risks. Say deliberate changes are newly made to a Photoshop edit on which several LR image versions are based. These updates will ripple through all virtual versions automatically; whereas if these versions had instead been fully independent, the same changes would need to be made repeatedly to get the same result; assuming one wants all these versions to reflect the changes; which is (should be; needs to be) the realistic expectation, when one has opted to use a cluster of VCs in the first place.

  • Can I label virtual copies?

    Hi,
I'm looking for an easy way to handle virtual copies and what I'd like to do is to put a label on each VC but there is no way to do this.  Say I have an image that thas been processed to my satisfaction and I'd like to have one VC be a 5x7 crop and another an 8x8 crop.  I'd like to label the VC as such (e.g. sunset 5x7 and sunset 8x8).  Otherwise, I can't tell quickly what each VC represents.  This gets more time consuming when I have 6 or 8 VCs of the same image.
Perhaps there is a better way?
    Thanks,
    Tanguero

Thanks, this was helpful and got me on the right track.  I did have to look up where the 'copy name field' existed and how to get to it as I wasn't familiar with it, but it did work.
Another related question is whether I have to be in the Library mode in order to modify the copy name field?  My workflow is such that I'd like to create and label 3 or 4 different crop VCs while staying in the Develop mode.  Is there a way?
    Thanks,

  • Can you stack 2960 Switch?

My question is can I stack two or more 2960 switches, master/slave design and be able to manage them both using the CMS technology or not. I don't quite understand the SFP, Small Form-Factor Pluggable, and the 2960 uplink ports. It appears as though one uplink will be in standby mode, therefore both ports can't be active at the same time. If that is the case it looks as though you can't stack becasue of only one uplink port being active.

    Hi Washro,
You cannot stack 2960 switch like you can do 3750 switches but you can still achieve clustering on this switch.
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat2960/12240se/scg/swclus.htm
Also both uplink ports can be active at a time if they get connected to some other switches but if 2 get uplink to same switch then STP will block one port.

  • Can you have two copies of Encore CS6 running on the same computer?

I'd love to be able to have two copies of Encore on the same computer. While one copy is encoding and burning, I'd love to get another project started and encoding on the same computer and maybe, if possible, even start burning to a separate external burner. But first, I'd love to just be able to have two copies of Encore open on the same computer. I tried copying the Encore CS6 folder to a different drive and then running it but it says there's another Encore in session and this may cause issues with the hardware.

    Thanks!

I can't imagine Encore being able to run 2 instances.
Build from Encore to an image (iso), and get ImgBurn. You can run multiple instances of ImgBurn and burn as many DVD/BDs as you have burners (including externals via USB or whatever). Send him a donation; his product is fantastic.

  • Can you Combine Virtual Clusters from 2 Mac Pros?

Reading, searching support & Googling has not really answered this (perhaps dumb) question. Hopefully someone here would be kind enough to help.
I have a 8-core Mac Pro running FCS2 with a 4-instance Virtual Cluster. I just added another MP 8-core edit seat & setup another 4-instance Virtual Cluster. Each MP compresses great standalone. In the Submit dialogue both clusters are shown as separate choices. I want to be able to combine them into a mondo choice.
I understand how to distribute rendering between 2 machines but how do you distribute rendering to all 8 virtual cluster instances. Ticking share unmanaged resources simply shows each 4-cluster resource.
    TIA

Page 27 shows an example of a part-time setup using every available workstation in the network (provided you have installed Apple Qmaster software on every Mac) One computer with FCS2/Compressor installed is the controller & all others are unmanaged nodes "with services only" as described on page-17.
Not sure if you're referencing what your current setup is in comparison to what I was pointing to in the manual, so forgive me, but I don't think you're following what I'm saying.
When you're creating true clusters with Qadministrator (meaning not Auto or QuickClusters), at least some of the services on the host machines must be managed. (And I point this out because you're using managed services on your machines)
So, using Qadministrator, you must create 2 cluster setups on each machine - one where the 8-core box uses only the resources on itself (replacing the Virtual Cluster) and another cluster where the 8-core machine uses its own Compressor resources as well the resources from the neighboring 8-core as well as your MacBookPro. (And yes, you can select to use only 2 of the 4 instances from the neighboring 8-core.) But each cluster would use itself (the 8-core box you're seating at) as the controller.
So is there a particular reason that you're using managed services? I've found Virtual Clusters to work - across machines, even - if you use unmanaged services (as Services Only in the QMaster preferences) then submit to This Computer in Compressor, with the Use Unmanaged Services on other Computers checked. But storage needs to be centralized (networked) in order for it to work reliably. Otherwise, the virtual cluster, in my experience, tends to determine that it'll take too long to copy material over and won't use the neighboring resources.
Or have you covered these bases already?

  • Can you install 2 copies of CS3 on seperate hard drives?

In my office, I recently installed a raid 0 setup of 2 drives to install and run some applications in the hopes of alleviating some system strain and speed up everything overall. I'd like to install the entire suite to this new drive however I don't want to uninstall it from the C:\ drive due to time and possible problems. Not to mention, if I have issues or am unable to install it than it would lead to all sorts of unhappiness. We I can deactivate the one on the C:\ drive later if all works out well.
Can i keep my full CS3 suite on C:\ and have another full suite on D:\ ?

You can have the program on two different drives as long as you boot from the two different drives. One registry will not know about the other copy. You cannot use it installed run them from two different drives using one boot drive. The registry will get too confused.

  • Can you use Virtual Channels in a Borland C++ program using the NiDAQ library? It would make configuration of my application much easier.

I have no idea which category this fits under.
Could you please CC any replies to [email protected]

This would be a question for the Multifunction DAQ section of Developer's Exchange. The answer is no, the NI-DAQ C library does not support virtual channels yet.

  • Can you have two copies of a song in different formats?

I have my iMac connected to my stereo, and also use a 30GB iPod with it. When I play my music directly from iTunes into the stereo, I'd likve to use a .wav file format as it came from the CD. However, these are much larger than I'd want to have on my iPod, so I'd like to have another copy of the song in AAC format. That way, I can listen to the .wav version for its resolution on my system, but have the convenience of the storage that the AAC offers.
However, I cannot seem to figure out how to use iTunes to do this. Let's say I import the CD the first time using .wav. If I try to put it in the second time to import as AAC, it asks if I want to Replace Existing, or Don't Replace. I cannot import it again, using the different import setting.
Anyone have any ideas how I can do this?
    Thanks,
    Curt

Okay, so I was a bit dense about this. I just figured out that if I use the "Don't Replace" option, it will import it a second time, using whatever settings I have. It would be nice if iTunes could automatically create a second copy!

  • Can you stack Apple Giftcards?

I know this isn't the proper place for this post but it seemed to be the best chocie since their isn't one for Apple Retail. I was wondering if I had say three $100 giftcards could I use all three online to purchase something in the store? I'm not talking about the Mac App Store or iTunes Store. I'm talking about Apple Giftcards to purchase hardware.
    Thanks

Yes. You should be able to load your Apple Store account with a number of Apple Gift cards.

  • Virtual Copies and Exposure Setting

I've read that the SDK is for export/web/metadata, so apologies for asking a question when I the answer is probably no...
What I'd like to be able to do is write a plugin that would enable me to select an image in the library, and then automatically create virtual copies, with each copy having a variation on the exposure settings, in effect creating a bracketed set, which I can then export for exposure blending.
Is this type of functionality feasible right now?
On the LR/Enfuse plugin guide it says that when batch processing LR/Enfuse can re-import the blended result image into the source image stack, which gives me hope that the SDK can do things with the Library module.

No, it's not possible to do this with the current SDK. The limitation you'll hit with what you're proposing:
You can't create virtual copies of photos via the SDK.
You can't change develop settings via the SDK.
I've noted these as feature requests for future SDK enhancements but I can't make any promises about when/if it might appear.

  • Virtual copies and history?

I want to creat virtual copies that include the history so I can rever them from BW back to the origianl color.  Why is the history removed when you creat virtual copies?

Alan - thanks for the tip. The conundrum of "which history should be shown" for multiple virtual copies isn't actually one at all. When a virtual copy is created, the history of the parent image is duplicated; further edits to that particular virtual copy are added to the top of that copy, just like they are now. Subsequent edits to the master copy don't affect any of the descendant VC's, including their history.
Andrew - why does it have to be a new iteration? It clearly isn't, since it has inherited all of the non-destructive edits from the parent. And you haven't addressed my workflow issue - how do I identify all of the edits made to a virtual copy? Right now, I can't; Lightroom throws this information away. There's no penalty if Adobe duplicated the edit history, you don't have to look at it if you don't want to.
Cornelia - someone has already created a feature request, here it is:

  • Find and export Virtual Copies: Easy to add and ( i would argue) Necessary

I haven't found an easy way to go back and easily select all virtual copies in a library in order to export them.
A virtual copy is easy to miss and sometimes its hard to remember where you made changes in a large collection.
There needs to be a search option for file types in LightRoom that can find the virtual copies and allow them to be collectively exported as real copies.
If not a search function, then please simply insert a "save all virtual copies" option in the export area. Perhaps it could have the option to export all to their respective original file's folder OR to a designated edits folder with some tag to refer to the original location.
I would very much appreciate an official adobe contact if at all possible :-/

You can filter out Virtual Copies using a button on the filter bar located in the bottom right corner of the Lr application window (just above the filmstrip). Click a folder (folder panel) to narrow the filter to a specific folder or subfolders or the top most folder to show all virtual copies. You'll also find the second button will show only Master photos.
