Can you suggest a good black and white printer for OS 9?

I'm going to be using OS 9 for a while and was wondering if anyone could suggest a good black and white printer that I can connect to my Lombard laptop running OS 9. New or used doesn't matter to me as long as I can still get some ink cartridges for it. Thanks a ton for the help.

Okidata printers are the only ones I know of that are current models that have Mac OS 9 drivers.
http://www.okidata.com/mkt/html/nf/b2200-b2400home.html
And I think these are laser printers, not inkjets. I don't have personal experience with them.
For older models that you may find used, HP made good printers. For their inkjet printers, HP put the printhead on the ink cartridge, which ensure that key part will not wear out or get clogged on a older printer.
Make sure the model is not too old; you need USB. To check on a specific model, go to hp's support site. Look up the model by it's name or number on this web page.
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=support
From the next page, you can see the specs and open a page with a listing of printer drivers. If there is a driver for Mac OS 9, that model would work.
You can do the same type of evaluation with other brands, such as Epson, Canon, etc.

  • Cheep black and white printer for iPads?

What is a cheep printer that my students can print directly from their iPads? I only want them to be able to print black and white.

I don't know if there's anything that's only black and white. Basically, if you find an air print printer you'll be able to print natively from the ipad, no extra apps or software
If you find a printer that's wireless you can see if the manufacturer has an app. Or you can find a third party app to enable printing.
For your needs, with a bunch of students, an entry level air print printer would probably be the best choice. Look for wifi printers and see if they are air print enabled.

Can you suggest a good modem that is compatible with airport express?

    Just to add to turbo..
Your modem is maybe cable.. which is not adsl..
Or adsl which is not fibre..
Or perhaps wireless and not adsl
    Or satellite and not wireless.
    Or vdsl and not satellite
Or is it direct copper and not vdsl
Or it could be cable.. and we start around again.
A good modem is more than likely supplied by your ISP.. although that is not universal.. some hint of ISP and broadband type is a big step forward.

  • Looking for a good black and white laser printer

I am sorry if I am at a wrong place, but  I would like to get some recommend for a good black and white laser printer.  Maybe some of the user in this group have some good experience
    Thanks in advance - Frank

The Brother HL-5340D is an excellent choice. It's much cheaper to operate in the long run than others. I did a cost breakdown between it and an HP printer here.
However the HL-5340D is discontinued. We paid $170 for ours new, and new ones that remain are at a price gouging $530. The current nearest model is the updated HL-5450DN for $185.

  • Why do my PRO-100 black and white prints have a color tint?

I am printing on the PIXMA Pro-100 printer and sometimes, for no apparent reason (?), my black and white prints will have a color tint (usually a "redish brown"), and then when printing again... same print, same settings... the same print will be fine, neutral with no tint at all.
    Any ideas why?
Also (maybe related?) I don't understand why the Photo-Cyan and Magenta ink cartridges are being depleted when I am NOT printing color, but only Black and White.  Am I missing something?  When setting up for printing I always make sure the "Black and White Print" feature is selected in the settings dialog "Quick Setup".  Doesn't this insure that only the black and grey inks are used as long as I am not "toning"?  In other words... if ONLY the black and grey inks are used, isn't the print supposed to be a neutral black and white print? Again... am I missing something?
    FYI:
I am printing on Canon Pro Luster and Plus Semi-Gloss papers.
Under "Options - Color Management" I have selected:
(color handling) Photoshop Elements Manages Colors
    (image space) Adobe RGB (1998)
(printer profile) Canon PRO-100 <LU> 1/2 Photo Paper Pro Luster
    (rendering intent) Perceptual
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It looks like you have the settings pretty close.  But the fact is all printers use all their cartridges to print B&W.
     Whoa, why?
Yes it is true and the reason is this.  B&W consists of 256 shades of gray. From totaly black which is 0 to white which is 256.
If you have just one, two or three cartridges to make 256 different blacks and grays all the way to white, it simply isn't possibile.
The ony thing a printer can do is, amount of ink and how long.  So it makes up for this by using all it's cartridges.  However, in Canon it seems like the Pro-100 tints show up more than it should.  There are dedicated B&W printers but they are designed differently to accomplish true B&W.
The tint will be different on different papers.  You can experiment to find the paper that does best for you.  Try a more gloss type paper and see if you like the B&W.  You can try Red River papers, too.  They will assist you in picking a good B&W paper.
You can also experiment with filters in PSE.  Adding a little blue may help.  Just give it a try.
But the bottom line is you are no doing anything wrong.  It is just the charchter of the beast.

  • Photoshop Black and White profile for printing

I'm a black and white photographer, so this issue is extremely important for me to resolve. I've been looking online and I have yet to find the answer, so I hope someone can help.
I need to know how to set up the black and White profiles in Photoshop for printing. The printer I have is a canon Pixma Pro 9000 a mark II
I need true black and white. Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions. If you need me to provide additional information let me know.

I frequently print black & white work on an Epson, using the Advanced black & white feature in the print driver.
A quick internet search found that there is something similar for Canon -  Canon : PIXMA Manuals : Digital Photo Printing Guide : Black and White Printing
I print scanned grayscale files, and have the grayscale profile in PS set to Gamma 2.2.
If you are printing digital photos, they will be RGB, but that will probably not make any difference. But you have to read the documentation for the Canon to find out if it will. IOW - if the image should be Grayscale or RGB.
One very important thing when printing like this is to set the printer to manage colors (not PS) in the PS Print dialog.

I hired a commercial artist to create a color image for the cover of a self published book. I want a black and white image for the inside. The commercial artist has not responded to this request. How do I determine the format of the color image, I'm guessing it's Illustrator's formatting but I don't know. How can I find out if Illustrator will open the file and allow alterations? The image opens only in Apple's Pages software?

    rons,
It seems that all you have is a raster image, presumable PNG24 or JPEG, in RGB.
It may have been created as raster artwork in Photoshop, or it may have been created as vector artwork with the help of Illy, or as a mixture of vector and raster artwork in either application, or both combined.
If you just need to have a raster representation in black and white based on the current colour image, you may try this, in a new RGB document (View>Smart Guides are your friends):
    1) File>Place the image (you may tick Link or untick and have it embedded);
    2) Create a rectangle with black fill (R = G = B = 0), at least as large as the image, and place it behind the image (you may ClickDrag with the Rectangle Tool between opposite corners, then Ctrl/Cmd+X+B);
    3) Select all and in the Transparnecy palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with both Clip and Invert Mask ticked.

  • Black and white printing problem on Epson Artisan 50

When I print a black and white photo on glossy paper, I don't get black and white. I get a kind of purple hued black and white. Black text below, however, is perfectly black. So it seems it's not some kind of fault with the ink. I am choosing "black/greyscale" rather than "color". Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it? I have tried printing from different apps, including Preview, and same thing happens. Also different black and white images.

Yes, should be, but I'm not. Epson ink, Epson paper and same problem. The image is black and white. Converted in Photoshop. Print is set to "quality". Epson controls color. Not vivid. Paper is set to glossy. All as it should be.
What I have found by searching is this quote:
"Inkjet printers use their color inks and the black ink to generate B&W prints. But there are some noticeable drawbacks in doing it this way. Namely the possibility of having a color cast on your B&W prints, which is a barely perceptible color tint (usually green or magenta) that prevents your print from being true black & white.”
Other pages confirm this issue, so it seems that you just can't get decent, true black and white with a color printer. At least this color printer.
Do you find that when you print a black and white image you get true black and white with no color cast? Interestingly, I do when I print on plain paper, but not on glossy.

  • Black and white photos for an iPhoto Book

I've scanned many old black and white photos into iPhoto and would like to create books with them, but I read that iPhoto will not work with black and white photos for books, only color photos. Is that true and are there any suggestions for how to create a book using them? Thanks.

There is a bug affecting PPC Macs with iPhoto 6.0.5 and QuickTime 7.1.3 that causes it to crash with photos that have no color profile attatched. In addition, iPhoto 6 does not work well with Grayscale. So check these scans to see if they have no color profile or if the profile is grayscale. If so, you'll need to convert them to sRGB. They'll still be black & white, but they'll have a color profile that iPhoto 6 will accept.
Old Toad created an Automator application to embed the sRGB profile into your photos. Go to his Toad's Cellar and download the "Embed wRGB Color Profile 2" App. In Finder go in your Originals folder, then drop a roll folder containing these photos onto the app.
    http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/default?user=toad.hall&tem platefn=FileSharing7.html&xmlfn=TKDocument.7.xml&sitefn=RootSite.xml&aff=consume r&cty=US&lang=en#
Before doing anything, you might want to try inserting some of those scans into a book template and see what happens. To see how a book will print when you order it from Apple, choose Print when you are viewing the book. Allow it to assemble the file. In the Print Dialog box, click the PDF button and select Save PDF from the drop-down menu. Minimize the iPhoto window to find a little box asking you to select a location for the saved PDF. [If you don't go looking for this window you'll be stuck waiting indefinitely.] View the PDF and see how those black & white scans look.

  • Convert photo to black and white excpet for reds

I have a photo and I would like to convert it to black and white except for the reds in the image. Is there a way of selecting a color range to be preserved and to convert the rest to black and white?
    thanks

The problem is that the reds arnt just in one area.
Is there no way to select a color range?
I guess I could use the magic wand tool and set it off continuous while varying the tolerance, but this seems a but crude.

    Greetings from Vienna, Peter

    I have not installed Quicktime.

I want to create a short film (in Premiere CS4) with these scenes, mixed with photos and MP3 music.

  • How can I turn an image black and white?

I want to edit an image I have inserted into a pages document. I can't see a way to easily change the colouring of the photo to black and white. Using the bars seems to make the colouring look a little odd. Any suggestions?

In Pages v5.2.2, the quickest way to transform a photo to b/w is to select the photo, and on the right panel's Image tab — completely desaturate the image. Tweak the Exposure for tonality adjustments.
