Can you switch Airport Express (g) to a new network?

I bought an Airport Express a while back (it's a g, not the new draft-n). It was hooked onto my old D-Link wireless router to extend the range. A week ago, that D-Link router gave out, and I have an ATT router. Now that the new router is in place, how do I change the settings on the Airport Express to work with the new wireless router?
Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

Hello pyroluigi. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your AT&T router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
You could; however, either configure the AX to "join an existing wireless network" for streaming iTunes and/or share a USB printer ... or connect the AX directly to the AT&T router using Ethernet and reconfigure it as a bridge.

  • Can you make Airport Express go 5Ghz?

    Hi all,
I am using FIOS at my house that runs through a Verizon router to my Airport Extreme that broadcasts wirelessly.  I have also installed a Airport Express in an adjoining room to extend the network as well as to play music via Itunes.
When I am in the room with the Extreme, I get a strong signal at 5GHz.  But when I am in the adjoining room I get a strong signal at 2.4GHz.  I assume this is coming from the Express. My question is this; Can I set up the Express to go to 5GHz?

The issue is primarily due to the physical properties of higher vs. lower RF frequencies. The higher frequencies offer better bandwidth with a trade-off of range. In practice, the 5 GHz network is typically only useable in the same room as the wireless router providing it. It you want to provide 5 GHz networks in adjourning rooms, you may want to consider setting up a roaming network.
You can "force" the Express to extend the Extreme's 5 GHz radio, only if the following are true:
The Express must be within range of the Extreme's 5 GHz network.
The Extreme's 5 GHz network would need to have a separate Network Name.

  • Can't get Airport Express back onto my wireless network???

Just returned from a trip where I had successfully used my AE in temp accommodation. Now I can't get the thing to rejoin my home network. I've reset it time after time, I go through Airport Setup Asst and get to the bit where it says it's updating the AE, congratulates me on setting it up - but the thing never rejoins and all I get is the amber blinking light. Once this happens it disappears off the network until I again, reset to factory settings.
I have tried entering WEP equiv passwords as well as the ASCII but am not sure which one to use now - totally confused. I have another AE on the network which is working fine. I must be missing something unless the thing has gone u.s?
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
    Cheers

    Hi Dan
I have posted a new topic on this because I feel strongly about it.
Here's a copy and paste of what I said:
"I have spent literally the equivalent of 3 full days, configuring, reconfiguring, re-installing, setting up, un-setting up, scouring the internet, phoning people, taking trips to the Apple Store to find a solution. All a total waste of time. Why? Because until there is an update to cure the problem, the Airport Extreme BS will not function properly when used in an environment other than a basic setup.
My network at home consists of 3 XP PC's, two Airport Expresses, and 5 Macs of various models. Until I removed an Express to use it on a trip, all of it worked well. When I came to return said Express into 'the fold' - that's when the trouble started. Mainly that, unless I had security switched to NONE, I couldn't connect the Expresses to the Base station, and my HP PSC2510 wireless printer would not connect either.
If you are anything like me, you will have been through every single combination of setups, restarts, reinstalls you name it. I got conflicting info about the level of security from the Admin utility - sometimes it would report WPA, others it would say WEP.
Cut a long story short, I finally returned the BASE Staion to the Apple Store and got a replacement. I had narrowed it down to that component only. Everything else on the network "seemed" to be fine.
I wondered whether it was a solitary, faulty AEBS, and by replacing that, it would eliminate the problem. In theory.
Brought home new AEBS but this unit also suffered collossally unreliable/unsuccessful connections from Printer, Expresses and one XP laptop.
I have been to the Moon and back with Hewlett Packard trying to work out what could have happened - overnight - to this normally fail-safe wireless printer. No clues, all seemed to be set up correctly. But it WOULD NOT JOIN THE NETWORK!!!.
So, as any mad (as in angry) scientist would do, I set up a "Control" experiment. Keeping everything as it was, all I changed was the AEBS. I swopped the AEBS for my older white AEBS (flying saucer). Guess what?
Within seconds, all connected. Including printer, Expresses, and XP PCs.
All working perfectly. Wrote down all the settings to check exactly the same as on the new (n) AEBS - identical. Swopped back - same problems. No way would it work.
I am no Network expert but have a feeling that it has a problem managing/distributing/assigning IP addresses. Dunno, just a hunch because the printer would connect fine when connected to AEBS by ethernet cable.
So I am now going to return the new AEBS to Apple and get a refund. I don't have time for this and I suggest not many people do.
So if you have a problem like I did, it might be an idea to try another router or eliminate it somehow and check your settings.
    I hope this helps.
    EDIT:
Looking again through a lot of posts on here - I would estimate that they are pretty much linked to the same problem - a few are reporting problems after connecting to different ISP then not being able to get it working again, some saying they can't get a single solitary PB to connect but al the others do. It all rings bells here! I am sure it's an IP problem (but what do I know) I would love someone to see into this. I doubt whether Apple will come up with something before Christmas - let's hope they prove me wrong eh?
Anyone know of a good, reliable wireless router that also allows external HD sharing?
    Cheers!

  • Can't get airport express to work with new wireless router

I just swapped out a linksys wrt54gl for a linksys E1200 wireless router on my home network. My PCs and iPads, and TV all made the switch to the new network fine, but the airport express isn't working. All I want to use it for is to transfer iPad audio to my home speakers. but my iPad  AirPlay shows the old Airport as an option, I can switch to the Airport, no sound comes out the home speakers, then the iPad reverts AirPlay back to iPad.  This model Airport just has power, USB, and LANA ports, so it doesn't seem like it would be complicated. A CAT 5 cable goes from the airport WAN port to one of the ports on the back of the new wireless router. What did I overlook?

I thought I'd jump in here with you network experts for some help with a related networking problem.
Equipment:  iMac 24-inch, Early 2009 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 2 MBP w/Retina Display; AirPort Express version 7.6.4 (Conncected Using: DHCP; Router Mode:  DHCP and NAT); Comcast/Xfinity Gateway 1 Modem w/2.4 GHz WiFi.
#1.  Comcast forced me to change modems to their Gateway 1 saying mine was at “End of Life.”  Previously, my home network was set up with AP Express and worked fine using my iMac as a server.  After installing the Gateway 1, I could not get my network to work after repeated calls to their support, online chats, trial and error, reading community chats and articles, etc.  I put the Comcast modem in passive mode using the “Bridge” setting and re-established my network with my AP.  I’m using my iMac as a server for file sharing with my two MBP’s.  The network isn’t recognized in sleep mode and will not wake from sleep and I can’t find it or Connect to Server when the computer is asleep.  I’ve tried all combinations within the Energy Saver/Screen Saver/Security preferences.  I’ve reset the SMC and other like resetting to factory defaults. How can I fix this and what are the correct settings for my home network to function again with my AP Express?
#2.  TimeMachine stops doing backups when the computer is in sleep mode, understandably because I’m not making any changes on the iMac that need to be backed up.  But using my laptops on the network, I am making changes in shared files that are hosted on the iMac that I would like backed up.  I cannot get the schedule feature to work to wake up the computer long enough to do a backup nightly because, as a security feature, I log out after 30 minutes of inactivity. I understand the schedule doesn’t work unless you’re logged in.  Is there a way for me to make this work?
    Thanks!

  • Can't connect Airport Express to my main wireless network, just my guest account.

I go to join my Airport Express to my wireless network so I can play music from Itunes to my sound system in my living room.  That is all I want to use it for at this point.  I pull up a list of the networks available, and my guest network shows up on the list, but my main network, which all my computers and Iphone is connected to, isn't on there.  I have a Linksys E3000 with a guest account set up trhough it.  Windows 7.  I called tech support and they said something about a hidden setting.  I went and checked and couldn't find anything about this.  Also, when people come over they can access my main wireless account with my password.

Hi JWHITHAM and welcome to the forums!
Have you tried manually adding your wireless network to the iPod touch? Mine does the same too sometimes and I just add it manually. So far it works.

  • Can't see Airport Express previously set up as network extender

Hi, We recently moved.  At the old house I had an older Airport Extreme and two Airport Express units that were both configured to extend that Airport Extreme network.
When we moved I kept the old network alive at the old house for a couple months (security cameras) and so I bought a new Airport Extreme and set up a new network at the new house.  A few weeks ago I found a need for one of the older Airport Express units, this time to Extend this new network to help me get better signal beyond our garage firewall (a real firewall, you know like to stop fire).  But it's pretty dense.
It seems like I had to struggle to get to the place where the Airport Utility could see that unit but I don't believe I had to reset it.  I just don't recall.  Now I want to use the second Airport Express.  I plug it in.  It flashes Yellow (reasonable).  I look for it on Airport Utility and it's not there.  And I see nothing under the "Other WiFi Devices" tab.
Granted, that unit is setup with old network credentials but first, I know what those are and second, if I can't see it at all, I certainly can't enter any password.  It seems like the other one magically showed up after I restarted this or restarted that.  I just don't recall.  Prior to resorting to doing a hardware RESET of the second Airport Express unit, is there something I'm doing wrong that's precluding me from seeing this device???
Any help would be much appreciated.
    thanks... bob

You must reset it.. that is how it will show up.. and it must be the N wireless model not earlier G one.. that will never show up.
To avoid doing a reset is extremely difficult because the utility has to know its IP address and since it was used to extend wireless it hasn't got one.
So reset is the correct method.

  • Can't get Airport Express to connect to my network

I have a netgear wireless router, and the when I plug in the aiport express, it just blinks yellow. When I run the Airport express assistant, it gives me a warning that windows is not managing my wireless network. This is very frustrating!! What can I do?

I'm sorry you are having problems. When I cabled directly to the Express from my computer and ran the assistant it worked perfectly. After disconnecting the calbe, it connected wirelessly to my existing network. I am running an Aiport Extreme for my base station, I don't know if that makes a difference. When you run the assistant do you select "Join existing network"? There is a great post on here somewhere with other instructions on setting up the Express a different way. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

  • Can't connect Airport Express to Netgear router's network

Apple Airport Express doesn't see my new network. It sees my old ActionTec router network but not my Netgear router (WNR1000v3). I only use Airport Express for Airplay audio, not for extending wifi range. Do I need to change a Netgear router setting?

Alright. So after all that: calling Netgear, ISP and Apple customer service I fixed it myself by... get ready for it... unplugging Airport Express and plugging it back in. For some reason the AE's were seeing my old network and like 7 of my neighbors but they needed to restart to identify my new network. I hope someone else gets helped by my naivety in the future. BTW, Apple Care was awesome. My first time calling and hardly any wait time.

  • Can't get my original airport express to connect to new network

I have an original airport express and just changed to a new comcast xfinity router. Airport utility now doesn't see the airport express. Have tried the reset button and still the new network doesn't see it. Am I gonna have to buy a new airport?

Similar situation.  Want to use an existing Airport Express on a new network.  I did the factory reset.  Saw the 4 fast green blinks, and it's now slow-blinking gold.  AirPort Utility, however, doesn't see any other Wi-Fi devices.  "No remote AirPort Stations discovered."  The AE is about 10 feet away from my Time Capsule.  My MacBookPro is within 2 feet of the AE and connected to the Time Capsule network.
    What next?

  • AirPort Extreme with AirPort Express as WDS overall new network??

    Hello.
I am looking into buying an airport extreme as a replacement for a Netgear router that does not seem to work. I have an Aiport express already.
So let me see if I can get this straight...
I can have 6 computers (all PCs) connected (and a couple other devices like a TIVO) all connected to an airport extreme base station to the internet and 1 airport express set as a remote base station. All devices will be able to connect to the internet (3 computers plugged in via Ethernet on Airpot Extreme) and share printers/files/etc? Is there a limit to the number of computers that I can have (even if i am extending with an Airport Express?
I would appreciate any help steering me in the right direction. (I posted this in the main section but realized it might be better if i posted it here)

Is there a limit to the number of computers that I can have (even if i am extending with an Airport Express?
The maximum number of wireless clients for the Extreme base stations is 50; 10 for the Express.

  • How can I join Airport Express and 2Wire 3600HGV to extend wifi?

I to join an Airport Express to the wifi network from my AT&T 2Wire 3600HGV router to extend the wifi signal.  I know it is not SOP to link an AX to a non-Apple device like this.  I found instructions ( http://fsdeviations.blogspot.com/2012/09/howto-2wire-3600hgv-airport-extreme.htm l ) for joining an Airport Extreme to the 3600HGV.  Has anyone used this or a similar approach with the Express to join and extend wifi from the 3600HGV?

Connect an Ethernet cable from on of the LAN <--> ports on the back of the 2-Wire modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
Power up the AirPort Express for a few minutes. The indicator light on the front of the device will be slowly blinking amber at this time.
    On your Mac......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Other WiFi Devices tab
    Click on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then suggest that the AirPort Express will create a new network....which is the correct setting.  The window will look similar to this illustration:
For Network Name......type in the exact name of the wireless network that the 2-Wire is providing......IF.....you want to "extend" the 2-Wire network and make one "big" network.  If you want to have the AirPort Express provide a different network, type in the name of the network that you want the AiPort Express to provide.
For Base Station Name....type in a device name that you want to call the AirPort Express
Password......If you want to extend the 2-Wire network, then type in the exact same password that the 2-Wire network is using.  If you want the AirPort Express to provide a different network, type in a password that you want to use with the network that the AirPort Express will provide
    Verify......verify the Password
Click Next, and the utility will set up everything for you automatically.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.  That's it. There should be a green light on the front of the AirPort Express at this point.  You can configure other AirPort Express devices in the same manner.

  • HT4145 I have an Airport Extreme bas station now and I want to know if I can use an Airport Express to extend my network or do I have to use another Airport Extreme base.

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station now and I would like to know if I can use an Airport Express to extend my wifi network or do I have to use another Airport Extreme Base Station.

    This AirPort Express:
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
It is the only Express with 2 Ethernet ports. All others are "old"
Apple does not specify a model number in their product information, but it is A1392 in the U.S. I do not know if Apple uses different model numbers in other countries.

  • Can I use airport express in a wired network to play music through my stereo?

I originally used my 1st gen AE to wirelessly stream music from iTunes on my MacPro to my home theater.  This works, but there are some good days and some bad days where there are dropouts in the music.  I have recently run Cat6 cable to my HT from my router next to my MacPro.  This feeds a Gigabit switch that feeds the ATV, receiver, bluray, HD DVD, etc.  I plugged in the AE to the switch but it still defaults to the wifi network rather than taking a feed from the ethernet switch.  I know i can (and do) use the ATV (gen 1) to steam music, but sometimes it more convenient to use the AE.  Is there a way to force the wifi on the AE off and just have it for streaming from iTunes?  Thanks.

Yes, you can configure an AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a standalone wireless router without Internet access for the purposes of providing a Wi-Fi network for streaming. Note that any computers that will be the host of that stream would need to connect to this AX's wireless network while doing so. They would not be able to be connected to two wireless networks simultaneously for both streaming AND Internet access.

  • Can't see Airport Express on PC

We are trying to connect a PC, Packard Bell with Windows XP Home SP2, to my Airport Express network. I don't really understand why, but the PC is unable to see the signal of the AX. The ISP is called Alice (Telecom Italia), and has an Installation CD that I think screwed up some settings somehow. They use PPPoE to connect, and I'm not sure if this is the problem, but I think it is. I set up the AX with the modem so it works fine on my Mac, but the PC can't see anything. How do we proceed? Is this a problem with the wireless card in the PC? Or a problem with setup?

If your Mac connects wirelessly to the internet via the Airport Express without difficulty, then the problem is with the PC's configuration. The fact your PC cannot "see" the Airport Express wireless network has nothing to do with PPPoE. The possible reasons the PC cannot "see" the Airport Express wireless network:
    - the PC's wireless interface is defective
    - the PC's wireless interface and/or software has not been properly installed
    - if this is a PC laptop - some laptops have a switch that turns the built in antenna on and off, and yours might still be off.
    - (unlikely) you configured your Airport Express to create a "closed network" (a setting found under the Airport tab of the Airport Admin Utility) - you would remember if you had done this!
    - (unlikely) your PC has a wireless interface that doesn't support 802.11b or 802.11g wireless networks
After you figure out why your PC cannot "see" the Airport Express wireless network, you might find the information at http://www.efelix.co.uk/tech/windowsxp.html useful.
