Can you sync to a different computer?

My current computer is too old to sync my iPad 1 to, so I am using my daughter's macbook pro. I wanted to upgrade to IOS5, but it says that all data will be wiped from the ipad and to sync it first. I don't want to mix my photos, music and apps with what is currently on her laptop. When syncing is it isolated?

No! One device , one iTunes library.
1. Without connecting your iPad to your computer -
A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
A) Start iTunes (if it does not do so automatically).
B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.

    Hello!
    Yes you can BUT you gotta be carefull with duplication.  Making changes on multiple sources will trip the conflict resolution and can make duplicates.  Keep changes to the data limited to one side per given hotsync.

    This is the most basic feature of the ipod.  You should really read the manual.

  • Using your sim in someone elses Iphone 4 - can you sync it with your computer?

    Is my husband able to use his simcard in my phone 4 and then sync all his information from his computer onto my phone ?

    iPhone stores no data on a sim card, so swapping sim cards has no bearing on what you sync to the phone. If you want your husbands data on your phone, just plug it in & sync.

  • How can i sync music from different computer without losing pictures??

    my phone randomly "deleted" all of my music. It all shows up in itunes when I plug it into a computer. The only problem is MY compuer is currently out of commision and wont be fixed for at least a month. What Im trying to do is plug it into my friends computer and get music from her iTunes but when i go to move over specific songs a little window pops up that says my iphone can only be synced with 1 itunes at a time and that the current content will be erased if i do this. Im just not sure if this means all of the music content or all of the content including apps, pictures, etc.
    all i need to know is how can i put music onto my iphone from someone elses itunes without losing my pictures or affecting any other content on my phone?

    Did they change that or is it just that way for iphone? because I know when i had an Ipod classic.. or whatever theyre called.. I could definitely get music from mulitple computers. I had music from at least 4 different itunes accounts when I had that ipod.

    If you set up your email account(s) as IMAP instead of POP3, then each computer / smart phone can view the mail, but if any of them delete a message (or move it to another folder on the server), the same action will be seen on the other computers.

    Can you sync thunderbird email between several computers so if you delete an email on one computer in thunderbird it also deletes it out of the other computers it syncs with? I have three computers I use daily in different location and have thunderbird on each computer. I find it time consuming to have to repeatedly delete the same emails from each location. I am thinking that by leaving the emails on the server and not downloading them in each computer would solve this. Is my assumption here correct? If not? How would you set up Tbird to sync?

  • Can you sync Ipad with more than one computer?

    I am just curious, can I associate my Ipad with more than 1 computer.  I have a desktop and a laptop both with itunes and same library.  Can I sync the Ipad on both computers without it totally erasing the Ipad or should I only sync it on one computer?
    Than kyou in advance for the help.

    In theory - If the libraries are identical, yes it should work. Keeping the libraries identical might become a little challenging. You may want to make sure that you always manually transfer purchases whenever you sync to each computer to make sure that all content is always being transferred into each iTunes library and I would think that you would want to backup each time you sync as well. And you might want to sync with the one computer right after you sync with the other computer so that all of your data remains intact in the backups of both computers.
    You can always check by giving it a try and see of you get the "this iPad have been synced to a different computer" message and see what happens. If the message pops up, just cancel and don't sync.
    However, I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you absolutely have to for some reason.

  • I forgot my passcode on my iPad and it was synced to a different computer that I no longer have. What can I do about this?

    I have forgotten my passcode on my iPad. It was synced to a different computer that I no longer have. What can I do about this and if it at all possible without losing everything that was on it. Thanks for the help.

    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
    Can you sync pages files on different devices with different apple ids?  I have a personal iPad and one given to me for work. They are set up with two different apple IDs.  I do all of my lesson plans in pages.  I want to be able to create plans on both devices, but need to know if there is a way to sync the files without emailing, etc.
    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    No, that's not possible. A better way of working around this than emailing the documents to yourself is to use a third party storage solution such as Dropbox and a webDAV server to upload the documents.
  • Can you sync two different apple calendars? My husband and I want to better manage our family.
    My husband and I wish to sync our apple calendars.  Is it possible to do so? We have 2 separate apple Id's.  Tried google but seems to sync from google to Iphone calendar but not the other way.  I much prefer apples calendar because of the functions available but my husband and I need to see one another's schedules.  Any help out there ? Can you sync two different users calendars via the calendar that comes with Apple products?
    You each need an iCloud account and to sync your iCal calendars with iCloud. Then you can each share a calendar or calendars privately, so only available to the other, who would be able to edit it, or not, depending on your settings. Please see this page:
    If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
    You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
    If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
  • Can you sync from iPhone to PC?
    Can you sync from iPhone 3GS to PC, instead of the other way 'round?
    The syncing of iTunes content is a one way transfer process only - from iTunes on your computer, or from your iPhone to your iTunes library on your computer the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after purchasing/downloading music, video, or 3rd party apps with your iPhone.
    iTunes content is not kept synchronized but is part of the iTunes sync/transfer process. Photos transferred from your compute to your iPhone via the iTunes sync/transfer process are not kept synchronized either. The transfer of photos is a one way transfer process only - from your computer to your iPhone.
    The only bi-directional or true sync process is for contacts, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks with the supported applications on your computer. The same for notes if you are using a supported application on your computer for syncing notes.
    In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first. You can sync contacts, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks with the supported applications on multiple computers.
    You need to transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer along with all other important data that you will need or want to access on your new computer such as photos, documents, etc. All iTunes content is stored in an iTunes named folder. With iTunes quit on your new computer, place the copy of the iTunes named folder from your old computer in the appropriate location for access by iTunes on your new computer. You will also need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
    iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only. First you need to authorize your computer with your iTunes account with iTunes. With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
    The iPhone is not designed or intended to be used as a backup storage device or as a storage device to transfer data from one computer to another.
