Can you upgrade the hard drive on the new MacBook pro?

i Am buying a new MBP 13" but need to know if the hard drive can upgraded easily in the future if I need a larger drive.

Actually you can.   The SSD is a PCie blade type SSD, and although you'll need to dissamble the MacBook, replacement is possible on a 2014 MacBook Pro with Retina display.

It will void the warranty if you attempt this though.
RAM on the other hand is soldered to the Logic board.

  • Moving the Hard Drive to a new Macbook Pro

I am going to be switching from a MId 2012  13.3"/2.5GhZ Core i5 to a Mid 2012  13.3"/2.9GhZ, Core i7. Can I just swap out the Hard Drives, assuming both Macbooks are on the latest version of Mountain Lion?
    Thank you

All you need is a 00 (double zero) phillips screwdriver. Done right means not screwing anything up like stressing the HDD cable when you are disconnecting or reconnecting it or buggering up anything else while you have the bottom off.
One tip. Do not disconnected the battery. Although some guides suggest that you do, it is not needed and can only cause problems if it isn't disconnected or reconnected properly.

  • Can you use external hard drives with the HP Omni 10 5600US

Since this a Windows tablet, can you use external hard drives with the HP Omni 10 5600US?
I know there is a micro-sd reader for additional storage but can you use the usb for external hard drives like a regular pc?
I tried looking at the spec's for this tablet and it said the usb port was host only. I'm not sure what that means exactly.

Yes you can.  You'll need to purchase a USB OTG (on-the-go) cable.  I recommend using a drive that has its own power supply but I've successfully used small USB powered drives also.

  • Is it possible to increase the hard drive capacity on my Macbook Pro?

is it possible to increase the hard drive capacity on my Macbook Pro?

If you feel confident, you can do it yourself.
If not, Apple can do it for the small matter of money.
    If you go to http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Find you Mac on this page it has videos that show you how to replace the disk drive.
After you view the video then you can make your mind up as to which is the correct way for you to go.

thank you.  i did that with my old computer, and it saved it as a whole other computer on my new macbook.  now if i do the same for the external hard drive, i guess it will save it as another separate computer on the new one.  so i guess what i should have asked is, is there any way to copy my whole old computer and external, but have the files integrated into the new mac, so i don't have to log in and out of 3 computers just to use my old programs or to see pictures or movies or files from the past.  ???  and i now have the apple tv and i have to turn on my macbook and log into the old computer to see certain old files and pictures or home movies????  there has to be an easier way???

  • Can you get wireless hard drives for the new ipad as apple again havent increased the size

someone has mentioned that you can get wireless hard dives for the ipad.....this would be beneficial as yet again apple have not increased the size of the maximum hard drive of their new "soon to be released" ipad.....thanks Lee

The wireless "drives", which are more truly media streamers rather than true file storage, continue to be an optiono for the new iPad just as it was for the previous versions. Confirm compatibility with iOS 5.1 before purchasing, just in case the product might need an update for the new version of iOS.
    Regards.

  • If I buy an external hard drive for my new MacBook Pro with the retina display, can I play The Sims 3 on it?

    Hi!
I recently bought the new MacBook Pro with the new retina display, but since it does not have a dvd/cd drive, I was going to buy an external one. I think I will be able to use it to watch dvds, but can I also play the computergame The Sims 3 on it? If not is there anything else I can do?
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can try formatting the external drive on your eMac using Disk Utility and choosing a well-known format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html. It's quite possible that your new iMac would be able to read it, but first, tell us which formats Disk Utility lists.
If you have those songs in iTunes, simply go to Music folder and copy the iTunes folder to the external drive. Then, connect it to the iMac and copy the iTunes folder to Music folder.
If they are not in iTunes, copy your songs to the external drive. Then, connect it to your new iMac, open iTunes and drag the songs into it

  • I have connected an external hard drive to my new macbook pro.  I only have read access.  How do I copy folders to the external hard drive?

I have a new Macbook pro retina.  I have connected a WD external hard drive, but have only read access.  I want to back up my computer, and have the ability to archaive files.  Any suggestions?

I have connected a WD external hard drive, but have only read access.
As ds store already pointed out, if the drive is formatted as NTFS, you can't write to it. Fortunately, the fix is easy, just erase the hard drive using Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I want to back up my computer, and have the ability to archaive files.  Any suggestions?
Backups and archival backups are not necessarily the same thing. An archival backup is to be kept indefinitely far into the future, and should never be changed after it is created. That does not mesh well with being on the same drive as a backup maintained day-to-day. Ideally, archival backups should be written to one drive - possibly multiple backups, but each one should never be touched after it is written - and other backups should be maintained with greater frequency on one or more other drives.
You can get a bit of compromise with an incremental backup, like what Time Machine does. That will keep old data as long as there's still free space on the drive, then will start removing the oldest copies of files to make space for newer stuff when necessary. Another alternative is the way Carbon Copy Cloner does incremental backups, where the data keeps piling up until the drive is full and then the backups fail until you remedy the situation. (This could allow you to fill up a drive and then put it on a shelf as an archival backup and start a new backup on a new drive.)
If you can specify more what you want to do, we can advise you better.

  • How do I upgrade my hard drive with Firmware - via Macbook Pro 13.3"

What is the best way to update firmware for a 400GB Samsung HM400LI 5400 rpm
    hard drive?
The firmware file is a .exe file and since I am on my macbook pro I don't see
    how I can do that.
    Drew

Windows in Parallels and Windows under BootCamp are two totally different animals. When using BootCamp, you are booting directly into Windows. Windows has direct access to all hard ware. When you use Parallels, you are in a virtual Windows environment and all hardware access is done through OS X. However, having said that, I don't know how that SSD firmware updater works. There is a possibility that it may not like the way the EFI firmware talks to the drive. Most of those utilities are designed to work with machines that use a BIOS. It's probably best if you just confirm with the manufacturer if it will work or not.

  • I want to upgrade my hard-drive in  2010 model MacBook Pro 13

I would like to increase the hard drive size on my 13" Macbook Pro from 250 GB to 500 or 750 GB. Amazon carries the WD5000BEVT and the WD7500BPVT drives. Reading various comments about them, I'm concerned about how quiet and efficient they are in a Macbook Pro 13. Some comments mention problems with the drives involving "clicking" sounds etc. What drives are safe for upgrading my Macbook? I also plan on using Bootcamp to run Windows 7 off the drive in addition to OS X if that makes any difference.

Any 2.5" SATA II drive will work inside your machine. However I would recommend looking at OWC's selection, because they specialize in Macs all of these drives are tested and known to work.
I just sold my MBP yesterday (looking to get an MB Air), I put in the 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid which I really liked. My boot up times went down to the 20-25 second range which was very cool. However that being said I also rarely rebooted as that isn't necessary on a Mac.

  • Hard drive problems on new macbook pro

I have a brand new macbook pro with very few applications and music and the "Other" section of my hard drive is 80/120GB? Can I reduce this? If so how?

First, your problem has nothing to do with Time Machine. Don't turn it off.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • All photos in Faces gone after external hard drive transfer to new MacBook Pro

    Hello all,
I had a upto date 6 year old Macbook G4 that I regularly backed up onto a external hard drive.
I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro OS 10.8.3 with iPhoto version 9.4.3.
I imported all info from the external hard drive to the new MacBook Pro. Seems most all data transferred ok.
With the following exception with iPhoto application, I have over 17,000 photos in the iPhoto library.
On opening iPhoto on my new MacBook after import all the iPhoto seems to be working ok, Places, library, folders, editing etc.
The one problem seems to be with Faces. When opening faces it loads and the individual recognised face folders are there, with perforated outline
but no photos. No phots in any individual Faces folders.
All Faces folders are greyed out, the number of each of the faces in each folder is correct with names and are again all grey out with a perforated outline.
Help and information on how to get the pictures of the photos back into the indivudual folders which are still in the Faces page but are blank.
    Thank you, signed "Faceless Faces"

I imported all info from the external hard drive to the new MacBook Pro. Seems most all data transferred ok.
Exactly what did you do? With iPhoto there is no "importing" involved - you simply drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto letting it convert as needed
With the following exception with iPhoto application,
You would do nothing with the iPhoto application - you use the new iPhoto application installed on yoru new system - you only move the iPhoto library as noted above
You can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library
