Can you use AirPrint without a computer

I found out that there will be no printer in the Paris apartment we will be using, but there is wifi.  We will have need of a printer, and would bring one, but don't want to bring our laptops.  We just want to use ipads and iphones this trip, but would need to be able to print via airprint to an airprint-enabled printer with no computer involved on any level.  Printers that seem to say no computer is needed to print via airprint still include CDs which must be installed on a computer.  Theoretically, I guess if you set the printer up here with a computer, the printer could then be used elsewhere without a computer--but there is no way to put a network wifi password into most printers without a computer.  Does anyone know of a transportable, relatively inexpensive printer that will truly not require a computer to work with airprint?
Thanks!  This has been a continuing problem, as we will be there for a month.

There are other technologies besides Airprint, and many of them require a computer.  An airprint printer does not.
Check the airprint printers listed here (click on the brand to get a page of models) ...

My mac seems to have a virus thats connected with a few apps i use and i can't use them without my computer glitching out even though i've reinstalled the apps a few times.  It's very frusterating especially when i'm doing someting when my  computer randomly freezes or justs logs out for no reason when i'm using the apps.

    Matthew,
if you boot your MacBook Pro in Safe mode, do those apps still behave in the same way?

On the PowerMac G4 I had it had to be connected, but not sure about the model you have.  My guess would be yes due to shielding in the case, but would rather wait and hear from someone else.

can the apple tv be used if I do not own another apple prouct?

The Apple Tv is a stand alone device. It does not require an iPhone, iPad or other Apple Product.
An Apple Tv is simply plugged into an HD Tv via an HDMi cable, and has a control remote to select the options form its onscreen menu.

    No it wouldn't be possible.
I mean the network makes you communicate with others connect to one internal network. Though you can connect over cellular network.
Cellular network is still a network.

  • Can I use iPhone without a computer?

So I have a mac with 10.3.9 which doesn't support iphone (10.4.x onwards only i believe) - If I get an iphone can I use the phone function, wi-fi for mail and internet etc without connecting it to a computer at all? I DL'd the manual and it tells you as one of the first steps to connect to your computer via USB and register it. Is this essential? To use the phone in any way at all do you have to register it?
I'm happy to go to a friend's house with a compatible mac eventually and load some mp3s and videos or whatever on to it but would like to know if I can just use the thing as a phone first without needing a computer at all.

    Oh man.
Yes I own a powerbook. My reasons for not being able to use it are... I use Avid editing software on it. If I upgrade to the latest version of OS X, or even an earlier one like 10.4.x then I will have to upgrade my Avid - that costs money that I don't have. It works well on my 10.3.9 and I've been happy with this. Until now it seems.
In order for you guys to be helpful to me here we'll all have to pretend that we aren't proud nerds that secretly wish we could control our cars from our phones (this includes me so don't be offended).
Pretend for a second that the iPhone isn't the best thing since sliced bread and can do almost anything and pretend that some people might be happy setting it up and just using it without updating it's software all the time and just treating it like they've treated all their other phones - as a phone.
You all have answered me like I should know better than to suggest I might try to keep my iPhone use simple. I bet Apple themselves aren't comfortable with anyone suggesting that the iPhone needs to suckle at the teat of a computer every day just to keep working! If that really was the case then surely this phone would unusable for any extended trips away from home - going on holiday for a week to Brazil would be out because your iPhone can't survive without being synced! Come on!
All I want is to set it up and use it unaided. Is this possible in the first instance, straight out of the box with no computer.

  • Can you use AirPrint to print to hard wired printer via your WiFi network?

Recently I bought an Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One to serve all my PCs in the house and to use the AirPrint functionality for all the iPhones & iPads.
The printer is located in the basement office where there is poor wireless reception, and therefore connected with a wire (ethernet) to a wireless router one level up on the ground floor. The wireless router covers & connects everything (PCs, iPhones & iPads) in rest of the house.
I do not seem to be able to set up AirPrint when the printer is connected through the ethernet to the local network. Only when I unplug the ethernet cable and connect the printer wirelessly (with poor reception) to the  wireless network, I get AirPrint to work ...... As soon as I plug in the Ethernet cable the WiFi of the printer shuts off and AirPrint does not function anymore.
Is there anyway for me to keep the printer "ethernet connected" through the wire and use AirPrint ??
I underdstand ther is a lot AirPrint is wireless, but why can it not be wireless from the iPhone/iPad to the wireless router and then through the ethernet cable to hard wired printer ? It's all on the same network with proper IP addresses etc. Do not understand why the printer also needs to connect wirelessly to the router to enable AirPrint.......
    thanks for helping out,

I came across this discussion when looking for a solution to a similar problem. We have an AirPrint certified printer that does not have built-in Wi-Fi. Using a USB cable it worked well with our iMac, but we also wanted to use AirPrint with our iOS devices. In our situation, we cannot run an Ethernet cable from our router (a 4th generation Airport Extreme) to either our iMac or printer. With help from Apple Support, here is what became our solution.
Using an Ethernet cable, we connected an AirPort Express router (2012 model) to the printer to provide a Wi-Fi capability to the printer. AirPrint apparently will not work with a USB cable. Because the AirPort Express was being repurposed, we reset it using what Apple refers to as a “Factory” or “Default Settings reset.” With the reset completed, the Express became visible within Airport Utility, showing a connection to the Extreme. Within Airport Utility, click on the Airport Express to open its status window; click on the Edit button, then the Wireless tab, and then select “Join a wireless network” within the Network Mode options. This made the Express into a “wireless bridge” between the printer and the Extreme, allowing our iOS devices to see the AirPrint printer. Our iMac also connects wirelessly to the printer.
Within Airport Utility, we could have selected “Extend a wireless network” as the Network Mode, however because we rely on a wireless connection between the Extreme and Express, doing so has the potential of reducing throughput among Wi-Fi devices because of the resulting network overhead. We had been using Printopia to allow our iOS devices to work with an earlier non-AirPrint printer. To avoid conflicts we turned Printopia off, accessing it within the iMac’s System Preferences. AirPrint is easier to use and provides better printer output than did Printopia.
When our HP printer sleeps, the iMac computer wakes it up as needed, however the sleeping printer becomes invisible to the iOS devices. We hope to fix this weakness, possibly by resetting the printer's sleep setting.

  • Can you use iTunes without exiting Keynote?

I am using keynote to do presentations for kids and it is not a fixed structure for each one.We change between slides regulary and is there a way to embed music into a group of slides 4 or 5 slides without the embeded music for those slides interfering with music embeded in other slides of the presentation. Is there a way to use I Tunes without having to exit keynote,is there a shortcut for I Tunes to be used with keynote.

    Welcome to the forum!
    1. With KN, you can either have music on one slide or on a whole presentation, but not defined for a group of slides within a larger presentation. The work-around for achieving the effect of the latter is to make each group of slides for which you want continuous music into a separate presentation, and connect the presentations using hyperlinks. When doing this, it's best to open all the presentations before beginning, so there's no lag going from one presentation to the next.
    2. You probably already know that iTunes can play music while a KN presentation is being run, so that's not your question/problem. You probably want to control iTunes while running a presentation. AFAIK, that can't be done seamlessly, because in presentation mode KN monopolizes the whole screen. You can come close to this by using Spaces or Exposé, but, as I said, it's far from seamless or elegant. (To try this, you've got to "Enable Exposé and Spaces" under KN's Slideshow Preferences). If you're versed in AppleScript or Automator, that might help, too, but I'm not, so I can't say more.

  • Can you use more than one computer to edit the same Premiere Elements Project?

I am using Premiere Elements 10.  I have built a new project on my desktop computer because the desktop has a firewire port to capture video from my camcorder and my laptop doesn't have a firewire port.  The project is stored on my home network.  I seem to be able to do editing fine using the desktop computer that the project was created on, but it won't load up right on the laptop for editing.  Premiere Elements is configured the same on both computers.  I guess my question is - does Premiere Elements store something on on the computer that the project was created on that is not being stored on the network drive?    How can I fix the problem so that I can edit on my laptop? The laptop is a top of the line Dell XPS with an i7 processor that I use for other Premiere projects, so the laptops ability is not an issue.
    Thanks
    Bill

Yes, having files stored on a HDD, but having the letter change between machines is a problem. The Project file (PREL) is only an XML database, with links to the Assets. Those links are Absolute Paths, so if anything changes, from drive letter, to file name, the link is broken.
I have over a dozen externals, that I use to migrate Projects between my main two computers. Each has had its drive letter set in OS of each computer. I started with Z:\ and worked down. Each drive has a lable on it with the designated drive letter. Unfortunately, I ran out of letters, as the workstation has a ton of HDD's and burners, so I had to start over. That does mean that I cannot have both Z:\ drives plugged in at the same time, but that has never been an issue. I wish that Windows would allow for double drive letters, say ZZ:\, but still, I have a handful of letters to use - just too many externals for those letters...
    Happy editing,
    Hunt

  • Can you use apps from one computer/iTunes accounts on multiple iPhones?

    Hello All!
I have been using a 3G since they were released on and syncing it to one computer and one iTunes account. My wife now wants an iPhone as well. I know what Apple's policy is on music and video, but what about app sharing. *If the phone is synced with the same computer and uses the same iTunes account (on the iPhone to login), will she be able to free access to all of the applications I have previously downloaded or will she need to pay for all non-free apps?* I couldn't find an answer in the Apple knowledgebase (except for the iPhone software itself, not the 3rd-party App Store apps).
I would appreciate a quick answer, as we're thinking of picking one up tomorrow. I'd appreciate the help and thanks in advance Happy holidays!
    Jim

Thanks all! I'm glad to have that answered. Apple said they couldn't answer it! Love those tech/sales support people for iTunes!!!
    Happy Holidays!

  • Can you use icloud without an apple os device on pc's?

    Hi,
I have  friend who has a pc and I would like her to be able to subscribe to my ical. When I look at the min requirements for installing the icloud panel it is microsoft windows vista. She installed it, created an apple id, but it tells her that she needs an os device to use icloud. Is this correct? Does she need to have an os device?
And if not, what might be the potential problem? I know that I can send her a url of my calendar but it is read-only. I would like her to have full access to the calendar thru icloud.

what if i have an account already, but i forgot my password and reset it?? it tells me the same message that i should use an IOS device.
and the problem is that i lost my phone so i need to access it from my PC.. what shall i do ?
