Can you use other disk drives on mac mini rather than the superdrive?

I have just purchased a mac mini and am exploring the various options available to me regarding disk drives?
Are you limited to just the Mac Superdrive or can you use other makes and models?
i read somewhere that some drives will only let you install software and not let you Burn Music or play games?
Is that correct.
Mike Price

I have three firewire burners daisy-chained to the mini for ripping my CD collection.

sorry, I'd like to butt in here:
I would like to do the same thing, so I am curious about this forum and rather than starting a new one, can I get some advice on this possibility:
    Mac Mini
    1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    80GB Serial ATA drive
    Glyph External HD 250 Gig
    Mackie Onyx 1620 w/Firewire
    Logic Pro 7.2
    thoughts?
The most number of tracks I could see at once would be 16.
Here is something I am most curious about...
    Firewire Hard drive
    Firewire Interface/mixer
    Firewire camera for FCP
    to much firewire?
Please let me know if you have other thoughts aswell...

thanks guys, this forum is fantastic!

  • Can I use install disk from my Mac mini to upgrade OS on my iMac

I’m currently running OS X v.10.5.8 on my iMac. I’d like to update it to OS X 10.6.
I also have a Mac mini that came with 10.6. Can I just use the install disk that came with my Mac mini to install 10.6 on my iMac?

No you can't. The install discs came with the Mac mini are bundled to Mac minis. So when you try to install with the Mac mini install discs, you'll get an error. You have to get the Snow Leopard package for $29 which is free to install on every Mac matching the system requirements.

Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!
The WD My Passport, I purchased back in early December 2013 & I just used it the other day after I updated my Macbook... & of course it says in the online manual it works for Mac Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard but not this new Maverick update. Is there anything I can do?

I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on some Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • Can you use external hard drives with the HP Omni 10 5600US

Since this a Windows tablet, can you use external hard drives with the HP Omni 10 5600US?
I know there is a micro-sd reader for additional storage but can you use the usb for external hard drives like a regular pc?
I tried looking at the spec's for this tablet and it said the usb port was host only. I'm not sure what that means exactly.

Yes you can.  You'll need to purchase a USB OTG (on-the-go) cable.  I recommend using a drive that has its own power supply but I've successfully used small USB powered drives also.

Can you use time capsule for your mac and use readynas to back up your pc's on the same network

Sure, that is trivial setup.. they both have different names and IP addresses.
You should be able to use ReadyNas for TM backup but you should check the latest state of play for that.

  • I can't use my Philips monitor with Mac mini

I can't use my Philips monitor with Mac mini, I am using a HDMI to VGA cable to connect them. But no signal on my Philips monitor.
My Mac mini is in a good condition, it can connect with my HDTV, the BENQ monitor at my office, but I can't make it connect with my Philips monitor.
    I dun know what happen.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

The two are incompatible, HDMI is a digital signal and VGA is an analog signal. You need a monitor with a HDMI port or a DVI-I port, these are both digital signals. DVI-I gives the best output.

  • Z87-GD65 can't use 3TB disk drives on Intel SATA ports

I've been happily using my Z87-GD65 for several months now with a 256G SSD for Windows 8.1, and 4*2T spinning Seagate drives.  I decided it was time to make 'em bigger.  So I plugged in a 3TB Seagate ST3000DM001 on one of the Intel SATA ports.  The motherboard doesn't recognize there's a drive there at all.  If I go ahead and boot, it's very slow to come up and Windows does recognize the drive, but it's unusably slow and eventually just hangs.
Ok...  Flash the BIOS on the disk.  No better.
Flash the MB BIOS.  No better.
Plug in a WD 3T Red drive.  Same exact symptoms.
Try different Intel SATA ports.  Same symptoms.
Both drives work fine on two other completely different systems (both old LGA1155 systems).
Plug the drive in to the ASM1061 ports on the Z87-GD65 and poof...  works like a champ.  170MB/sec from the Seagate, 150MB/sec from the WD.
Well, that's something, but I had intended to replace the 4*2T drives with 4*3T drives.  Using the ASM ports is not the answer.
I checked the hard disk drive test report and it claims the ST3000DM001 was tried and works.  So I'm pretty stumped.  Old MB BIOS didn't work, new MB BIOS doesn't work, old Seagate firmware doesn't work, new Seagate firmware doesn't work, WD doesn't work, multiple ports don't work.
Surely other people are using large drives on these MB's.
    Hints?

It does help knowing other people are getting the same hardware to work.  Gives me hope.
My first thought was "ain't no way it's the OS" since the MB isn't showing the drives on the display of SATA devices.  But just to do a quick check I slipped in a Fedora drive and booted and wow...  no problems at all with using the 3T drives.  Motherboard still claims no knowledge of them, but Fedora uses 'em fine.
ok...  Update the Intel chipset drivers and the IRST and reboot and...  it's better.  Still broken, but better.  Takes about a minute to boot instead of the usual 12 seconds, but once it's up it's working ok best I can tell.  So it's getting hung up on something during boot.
Fine...  reset the CMOS, PITA though that is since I have to yank the SLI graphics card to get to it.
Put it back together, boot, and... Windows won't boot.
I'm about ready to throw a tantrum but get it together and just start trying things. Yank all the drives but the SSD.  No.  Boot from Fedora.  No.  Yank the second graphics card.  YES!  Put it back in again.  YES!  Guess I didn't get it seated right the first time, or something.  Sure felt ok going in, but I won't argue with results.
Boot W8.1 and...  bingo...  up in 11 seconds with 3*3T drives in it.  And the CMOS claims to see the drives now.
Stripe 'em in Windows software and CrystalMark says it can read 490MB/s and write 450MB/s.
    That'll do.  Thanks.

  • Can you use apple tv on 2009 mac

can you use apple tv on a 2009 mac . I have Mac OS X (10.7.5 running

Yes but it will probably be too old for Airplay mirroring of the Mac's display but should work fine for sharing photos from iPhoto/Aperture or playing compatibl media from your local iTunes library with iTunes running.
For many features AppleTv does not need a computer at all.

  • Can I use a MacBook like a Mac Mini? How would I power it on?

Is it possible to use a MacBook like a Mac Mini when I'm at home, with it plugged into a monitor? I've seen pictures of people using theirs when the MacBook is closed, but how would you power it on? If it's turned off, can it be powered on with the remote? And if not, how would I turn it on without opening it? I don't much fancy leaving it in sleep mode all the time.

Basically, you have to use sleep mode, either
with a USB keyboard and/or mouse
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286
    or with bluetooth
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1308
You can use the Energy Saver preferences to set up schedules for automated shutdown (at night), startup (in the morning), and sleep (when idle) settings.
If it's powered off, just open the lid and power it up, then close the lid again, or get a laptop stand and use both the built-in display and the external display at the same time in extended desktop mode, if you have the desk space.
