  • Can I use Time Machine with a Network Storage Drive?

I just picked up this drive http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Macally/NSA2S350NAS/ and I would like to use Time Machine for backups, and also use a different location on the drive for sharing files on our network. But this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html says that network server must use AFP. How do I set that up? I just have a simple network using a 4 port wireless router. I have no idea what protocol the network is. I just use the "Network" option to connect to my new drive at smb://192.168.1.105.
Is this going to be possible or do I need to buy some other backup software???

On a Mac G4 I'm running OSX leopard with Time Machine. I have my other Mac (8600)networked. The 8600 was upgraded with a G3 Sonnet and IDE card, so it'll support OSX and large hard drives. I want TM to back up to the 8600, is this possible?
    Thanks

  • Can I use Time Machine on two different Hard Drives?

Hi, I have a Time Capsule on which I make my Time Machine back up every time, but I also want to back up all my data on another external HD using Time Machine as well... how can I do that? Thx

Alfonso, let me give you a warning. What you want to do should work, but does not work well for me. Here's my story:
I have Time Machine (TM) backing up a MacBook Pro to a Time Capsule (TC) on my home wired network. First backup (BU) took 24 hours. Subsequent incremental backups were very fast and convenient. All was working well.
About 6 weeks setting up TM/TC, I had to take my MacBook in for repairs. Being paranoid, I wanted a second backup, so I connected the computer to an external LaCie drive via FW800. Second BU also took 24 hours, even over the MUCH faster firewire connection. That really hacked me off, so I got CarbonCloner and made a bootable image on another external LaCie drive over FW800. That took only 2 hours.
I got the computer back from Apple after repairs and directed TM to start backing up to the original TC drive (no changes to the drive during repair). The TM software decided it had to do another initial backup! As I write this, it's been running 36 hours and has completed only 19 of 76 GB. This is MUCH MUCH worse than the first initial backup.
I want to like this TM software because of the convenience, but it is really crap and unusable in my opinion. With my setup, I simply cannot switch to a second backup drive without triggering another lousy initial LONG BU process. Frankly, I really regret buying TC and trying TM.
I used to use Retrospect with great success with the two external LaCie drives, but they went into the toilet when EMC bought them and spun them out. The quality of the software has really suffered and it is very buggy now.
So, unfortunately, it looks like my best strategy is to use CarbonCloner and the two LaCie drives.

  • Can you use Time Capsule as a working hard drive?

I would like to know if you buy the Time capsule, does it just work as a back up drive or can you use it as a working drive on your network?

A working drive with no ability to back itself up.. and outside of TM which cannot backup network drives.. if you use it.. be aware.. your files that are not backed up will one day be lost.. TC is not that reliable.

  • Can you use Time Capsule as an external hard drive?

I want to use it as both a back-up drive and an external hardrive for movies etc that I dont want to keep on my Mac so I can have more free space. I was just wondering if this is possible with this device or if I need a separate portable hard drive/external hard drive to do this.

I have an external HDD that I use for backups once in a while, BUT to be honest with you I last backed up my iTunes stuff (around 30K songs) over a year ago. Maybe it is time for another backup.
In all fairness, the whole time I have been using Mac's (since 2001) I have never had a major crash (knock on wood) so it has not been high on my priority list tbh. This said, how Apple have been acting lately I feel they have become a little too big for them selves and I have started to notice errors here and there, something that was unheard of earlier
Anyway, in most cases it is never the HDD that causes problems and extracting data from these are not a major hinder so I'm good...
EDIT: Oh, maybe I misunderstood the question

  • Can u use time capsule as a normal hard drive and don't activate the time capsule in my macs?

can u use time capsule as a normal hard drive and don't activate the time capsule in my macs?

Yes, but it will be slow and expensive compared to just buying an external and plugging it in locally.

  • Using Time machine with an external hard drive and AEBS???have a

I have a 500GB external hard drive that I have connected to my AEBS by USB. Recently upgraded to Leopard but cannot get time machine to see my hard drive.
    The base station is 802.11n.
    Is this possible?
Have read a few other threads and can't seem to get to the bottom of it.
    Thanks,
    T

In addition, when you get Time Machine to be able to see your external drive connected to AEBS, in TM prefs exclude all but one small folder from your hard drive (say, /User/Library) and allow TM to do its initial backup. This will create the sparsebundle (resizable disk image) that TM uses to back up to a network drive.
Then turn off Time Machine, unmount the USB drive and reconnect it directly to your Mac, mount it, set TM prefs to use the sparsebundle that newly-mounted drive, remove previously excluded items from TM's exclusion list, and turn TM back on. TM will then back up everything much more quickly than if connected wirelessly.
After that, you can return the USB drive to the AEBS. Incremental backups take much less time, so the slower connection won't matter as much.

  • Can i use time capsule as a external hard drive

can i use time capsule as a external hard drive

Not plugged in by USB if that is what you were thinking.
You can store files on the TC but you should NOT.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • Using Time Machine to restore external hard drive data

I have been using a Mac Mini running 10.6.8 for years as a media server.  I have always been very careful to maintain backups of everything, and the inevitable did happen - the hard drive containing all my media did fail.
To clarify my set up, my Mac Mini internal hard drive is insufficient to store all my media, so I have been using an external 2TB drive to store it.  I then set up Time Machine to back up both the Mac Mini and the 2TB external drive to a second 3TB external drive.  Now that the 2TB drive with my media has failed, I seem to be having problems restoring all the media from 3TB drive.  This is because the Time Capsule interface is designed to display finder windows at various points in time so you can go back to when your missing files existed and restore them.  The problem is that I need the entire contents of the dead 2TB drive restored to a new drive, but I can't open a Time Capsule window that shows the contents of the old drive.  I have tried opening /Volumes in a finder window, then invoking Time Machine, but my dead hard drive does not show up in the list of volumes.  When I open the 3TB drive in a Finder window I can clearly see that it has backups of the 2TB drive, but they are spread out among 83 different snapshots of various dates.
How can I use Time Machine to easily restore the entire contents of the dead 2TB external drive to a new external drive?

  • Time Machine with Ethernet network hard drive ???

I would like to buy a WD World Edition Ethernet hard-drive.
Can I use Time machine with an Ethernet drive plugged on my Ethernet router ??
(a SFR box - French ISP provider)

yes, I've read the article and others links, and there's some issues. When the NAS disk is full using this hint, some datas can be lost. Not recommanded.
Too bad ! I've not bought it yet, but it's seems a good product anyway for others uses (shared with others Macs, PCs, iTunes server with AAC support...)
but another disk is needed for TM... GRRRR. Now I hesitate to buy it.
Western Digital : some work for you here, as my fear is that Apple will not upgrade TM to add NAS support :-(((

  • Can you use time machine to back up an external hard drive?

I haven't used Time Machine so far and setting it up now.
Because my retina MBP has the limited hard drive size of 500GB, I'll be using a 2TB G-Tech hard drive as external hard drive.
I'll be partitioning it, 500 GB for the MBP as a time machine back-up, the rest as a hard drive for photography RAW files.
Can I set up time machine to back up the larger partition (the one with the RAW files) to a second external hard drive? Or does Time Machine only handle back-up from the main computer hard drive?
    thanks!

    Time Machine FAQ
You will definitely need more than 500 GB to use Time Machine - see question 1.
Time Machine works with the main hard drive and any locally attached storage, but I don't know of any way to make it backup the second partition without resetting the Time Machine Preferences. You can do that with a cloning program.
    Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu
    Clone  - SuperDuper
Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested
Two backups are better than one. Drives do fail.

  • How can i use time machine with a network drive

I have a Western Digital Net N900 wireless router with a 2TB internal H/D. How can I get Time Machine to reconize it?

Relying only on TM to me is iffy but I would bet you have clones in addition to TM like I do.  I agree with everything you said but to the OP question, it is possible.  A time capsule or AEBS+HD are pretty similar but one is officially supported while the later is not.
Since I'm rambling a bit I will add this.  I only use TM for the times I delete something and then wish I had it back.  All my restores or migrations are done from my clones.  One clone is made weekly and is a snap shot of my system.  One clone I keep remotely located and is updated monthly.
    My system:
    Internal 1TB
    Ext HD1 2TB (1TB data, 1TB clone)
Ext HD2 2TB time machine backup (internal + HD1 data, not the clone)
    Remote 1TB clone
I'm fully redudant with my method and it has saved me before.

  • Can you use Time Machine to...

Back up and restore a system?
I'm planning on backing up my hard drive so I can reformat and reinstall os x... is time machine the correct way to back up my data to use when I reinstall, or is it intended to be just for retrieving lost files, etc... if so what's the best method of backing up my stuff? Hope that makes sense...

    Qdelta wrote:
Okay thanks, that sounds like a plan... my HD is 250gb, and the time machine backup is 140gb or so, so plenty of room if I make say, a 30-40gb windows partition I guess...
    yes, that should be fine.
And I think it'd be better to use time machine because I've already got everything backed up with it, and also I wouldn't feel as safe using third party software... especially if it was a trial version or something.
safety is exactly why I prefer the cloning method.
those programs are not trial. both superduper and CCCloner are very reliable programs and people trust them a lot more than they do TM. I certainly do. TM on the other hand is still extremely buggy. if something goes wrong with the restore from TM process you have nothing to fall back on as the old internal drive is already erased. the chances of that with the cloning method are basically nil. and even if the cloning process fails you still have your original drive intact.

  • Can you use Time Machine to find Web sites?

I am hoping I can use Time Machine can get me into a website I visited last month. This website (a museum website in China) is now blocked due to a 403 error. Any ideas on how to do this would be appreciated.

    Hello Marcia:
I thought about your question for awhile (intriguing).
    Anyway, something you might try.
Go to your home folder ~library>safari. Highlight the history plist. Restore it from a TM backup that predates your visit. For good measure (although I do no know what it does, I would restore a file called historyindex.sk.
That may or may not work, but it is worth a shot.
As always, be sure you have a backup before you do anything that is software-related.
