Time Capsule TC = hardware router and hard disk designed to work with Time Machine.
Time Machine TM = software in the computer designed to run background backup.
What you buy is a Time Capsule..
And yes, that is the whole point of the TC..
Its fundamental design is a backup device for laptops over wireless so they do not need to be plugged in to do backups.
You are using it exactly for the intended use.

  • Can you transfer files using Time Machine back-up to a new computer?

I have an early 2006 iMac and would like to get a new one. Would I be able to copy the files that I want moved to the new computer by using my Time Machine back-up? I would only want to transfer a handful of items including my iTunes and iPhoto libraries as well as my iWork files.

You most certainly can. What you want to do is to go to System Preferences>Time Machine>Advanced> and exclude everything except the files you want to bring over. Then, plug the Time Machine Backup into the new machine and use Setup Assistant; It'll walk you through the rest.

    Mavericks does really nasty stuff..
Try manually mounting the sparsebundle and extract the files you want.
    Yet another Pondini reference. http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
We have avoided Mavericks you see knowing that it would cause these kinds of issues..
You never ever load a new OS without doing a disk image beforehand.. TM is not reliable enough or trustworthy to be depended on.
If none of the above work..
I would get a USB drive on the computer and install Mountain Lion or whatever OS you had before you unfortunately upgraded to Mavericks.. Then use TM from that decent installation but mount the sparsebundle and choose the backup from a date well before mavericks was installed.
Once you have extracted the files.. or even done a full restore you might be able to extract the files you want.

Can I do a backup using Time Machine on a server, or it needs an external drive only?

Time Machine can back up to a server. The drive or partition used still needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • I recently upgraded my Macbook pro with a new Hard Drive.  I then transferred the data using Time Machine.  Now when I want to backup using Time Machine again, it won't do it as it did before to the same external HD.  How can I get it to reconnect?

Purchased a new, larger solid state drive to replace my old drive.  I installed OSX then I had Time Machine do it's magic.
Now when I want to do a backup using Time Machine, it tells me that the external HD is full.  When I did so prior to upgrade, it would erase old backups and then do a new backup.
Please help.  I am worried about losing files, and am tired of seeing the "Time Machine hasn't backed up in xxx days" Error Message.
    Thanks.

it thinks yours is a new machine so it doesn't want to start deleting another machine's backups

  • Can my Acer laptop use Time Machine wi-fi?

Can my Acer laptop use Time Machine wi-fi? Is there some Apple proprietary software
that prevents me from accessing the security
    enabled wireless network?

Chances are, your Time Capsule's wireless security settings are using WPA2 Personal encryption, which is a very popular industry standard used by both PC manufacturers and Apple.
You can confirm this as follows on your MacBook:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utillities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Look for the Wireless Security setting (about half way down the page)
    What setting do you see?
If your Time Capsule is using WPA2 Personal security, then you would need to check with Acer Support to see if the laptop is capable of connecting to a WPA2 Personal wireless network.

Can I back up using Time Machine if I have some files already on the ExHD, or do I need a clean ExHD to use Time Machine?

If you try to use a new disk with time machine, it will try to reformat your EXHD. so I would save the items on your EXHD before backing up with time machine or partitioning your EXHD in disk utility

Do you have a few words missing in the original question ?.
When i upgraded from LION to MOUNTAIN LION it made NO difference at all to my MyBook Live !!!
reading the original post again and again, do you in fact have two My Book Live units, an old one and a new one ?

  • I cannot restore my backups using Time Machine - please help!

My iMac has been returned from repair and as part of this was reset to its factory settings, depeting everything.   I took backups using Time Machine to an external hard drive before it went off for repair, and after it came back I restored the data - so I thought.  It seemed to work for a long time, but on completion no files had been restored, and all the backups from before the iMac went for repair are now inaccessible in Time Machine.  However as far as I can see they are still on the hard drive however.
The iMac has since been backing up the now empty machine to this hard drive, over-writing the data, but I have now switched Time Machine off.
How can I restore my back-ups and recover my data please?

'depeting' is a typo for 'deleting'.  I don't seem to be able to edit this out above

i got a macbook pro 2008 and can not back up using time machine. it eject my external hard drive everytime. does anybody has a fix???

Does your external hard drive have it's own power supply?  It should.
Is your external hard drive formatted with the NTFS file system?  It won't work.
It needs to be formatted either with Mac OS Extended or FAT32.
(There are drivers available to add NTFS support to OS X but their quality is unknown, especially the "free" ones.)

  • Wireless Backup with Time Machine using Fritzbox

    I have
    Modem: Fritzbox 7170
    Macbook white
    Lacie External HD 500GB
On the back of the Fritzbox is an USB access..I would like to connect my Lacie External HD to the Fritzbox and want to split the HD into
1 part to store my music/photo's on
2nd part to use for Time Machine backups
Currently I have connected the Lacie to my Macbook using the USB cable, but I wonder if I can do it wireless by using the Fritzbox.

Thanks for your reply. I’m not sure if I understand what a NAS is….My Modem is a Fritzbox 7170 Fon WLAN. It has a USB host for USB printers or USB mass storage media in the network. The manual says it supports FAT and GAT32. So I think I can use it for storage….but not for backups with Time Machine. That would be so convenient…not having to plug in my external HD every time I want to make a backup.

  • Why can't I restore backup using Time Machine and/or Disk Utility

Backed up my entire computer on a Buffalo Ministation as I need to install new OSX and don't want to lose any files.  Tried the handful of options listed in Support to restore and nothing is working.  Using Time Machine, the Restore button is greyed out so I can't select it.  Using Disk Utility, when adding the source image, the Open button is greyed out so I can't select it.  Please help.

  • Wireless backup with Time Machine WITHOUT Time Capsule

    Hi All,
I was lucky enough to get a 1Tb external drive for Christmas and was wondering if there was a way of backing up my Macbook Pro wirelessly? I have both an Intel iMac running Snow Leopard and a 2008 Macbook pro, and a Sky wireless router. Is there anyway to either connect the hard drive to the router and backup both computers through this, or connect the hard drive to the iMac and get the laptop to backup through this wirelessly? I've tried searching for answers, with minimal luck, can anyone help?
    Thanks!

    Requirements to use Time Machine
Time Machine is only available with Leopard (10.5.x)
    1. External FireWire or USB 2.0 drive
    2. Time Capsule
    3. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 or later using File Sharing
    4. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 Server
    5. SAN volume managed by Apple's Xsan file system
A TM drive must be partitioned with either APM (PPC) or GUID (Intel) and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
So the answer is, No you cannot use TM to backup to a drive connected to the router you have. You can connect the drive to one of your computers and use TM to backup to the drive from the other computer. You must have File Sharing enabled on the computer to which the drive is connected. You must connect to that computer from the other computer using Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu. When you do you have to log into the other file sharing computer as a registered user - use the admin account username and password for the admin account on the file sharing computer. Once connected the remote drive will appear in the TM preferences as a potential backup drive.
Note that even if your router supports 80211n protocols wireless backup is very slow - much slower than even USB. You will also need to leave the file sharing computer running all the time (no sleep because during sleep there is no wireless) and the other computer must stay connected in order to allow the regular hourly TM backups to occur. TM only backs up one computer at a time, but it will backup both computers independently.
