Canadian English on iOS?

I've been using the iPhone 4 and iPad, and as the president of an editorial company and a Canadian journalist sworn to CP Style, I have to say the lack of a Canadian English keyboard setting on iOS is driving us insane up here. Sure, we can go with English (UK) and get most of our superfluous 'U's, but no 'Z's in prioritize or apologize. Or we can go with English (US) and quash a couple Britishisms, but still no 'S' in the defense or practising verbs.
There's a perfectly good Canuck English dictionary on OS X. Why has this not been ported over to iOS? Can we (please) expect this to happen with iOS 5? Even if it's something we have to go online and add to our devices manually, the five minutes of hassle up-front would curb a lot of aggression afterwards. Especially with iCloud syncing iWorks documents – will that mean every "Canadian English" Pages document will default to US or UK English as soon as you make a couple edits on your iPad?
Being that I spend the other half of my life in Argentina where they've got a Spanish dialect entirely their own (with its own name and everything: Rioplatanese), I could open up an entirely different can of worms on that, too. But I'll leave it here for now.

I agree this is an inexplicable omission. I'm stuck between choosing auto-correct mangling my U's with the US keyboard or mangling my Z's with the UK. Considering there are +20 million English Canadians, and it would likely take one Apple engineer all of an afternoon to fix this considering the dictionary exists in OSX, how has it lingered this long???

Well it's certainly no small task you're undertaking there, but there are a couple of ways of doing it as far as I know.
The first is to store all the phrases in all languages in an XML file, then pull the correct outputs depending on the current language. For example: (pseudo, obv)

You then load each language into a structure in the APPLICATION scope (call it APPLICATION.LANG), then pretty much everywhere in your code you need to output something you'd instead do:
<cfoutput>#APPLICATION.LANG[SESSION.language].phrase1#</cfoutput>
Or similar.
The other approach is similar, but involves having the phrases saved in database tables and doing a similar thing.
And sadly no, you'll struggle to find anything that can reliably translate for you - certainly not a database.

Canadian English Dictionary

Does anyone know the procedure for installing the Canadian English dictionary in FrameMaker 9.0? We were able to install it successfully in 7.2 and 8.0, but the same procedure does not work for 9.0. The procedure we followed for 7.2 & 8.0 is as follows:
Modify installation
Scroll down to Canadian dictionaries and click the dropdown arrow
Choose the "remove" option (third option indicated with red X)
Then run the installer again, this time choosing the first option under Canadian dictionaries.
Open a new document, type "hoser" or "pogey" (specific Cdn words), and run the spellcheck to make sure that these words don't get picked up.
We were instructed to change the regional and language options settings to Canadian English in the Control Panel. However, the dictionary is still not working properly.

Which locale do you have installed?
The en-US locale that has its own dictionary or a en-GB locale that doesn't come with a dictionary?
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Dictation... for Canadian English

Hey, Apple I love you. And I really appreciate your putting together a dictation module for Canadian English. Now I can do my dictation much faster, and with an enormous reduction in the number of errors.
But really… a Canadian dictation module that doesn't understand the word “eh”? What were you thinking?

EVERY single time I have to install the thing (which I've done a dozen times before version seven finally has an upgrader), I have to choose the WRONG language. Why is "English (US)" the only English option? Why not just say "English"? Or offer "English (UK)" - god knows, I spend enough UK money on UK iTunes!

That "fabulous" video content will come to the UK if and when the content owners allow Apple to make it available to you. Until the content owners do, there's absolutely nothing Apple can do.

Why can't I switch to Canadian English on Pages?

Hi guys,
I'm having a hard time getting Pages to accept Canadian spelling. I've already Clicked to "View" Then "Show Inspector" Then "More" Then selected "Canadian English" in the toolbar.
However, even with the toolbar open, the moment I click on my pages document. It reverts from "Canadian English" to "English"
I've even reset the system languages to "Canadian English"
Not sure what to do here...There isn't a save option on the toolbar.

You set your preferred default language in System Settings. Drag Canadian English to the top of the list.
The Pages language setting is only for selected text. It is not a magic wand you wave over your document. It is for varying the spell checking for different parts of the text.

HT204350 U.S. vs. Canadian English keyboard

I'm just setting up my new Macbook Pro and I'm supposed to choose between a U.S. and an English Canadian keyboard layout. Does anybody know what the difference is?

I don't see a English Canadian keyboard listed here, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2841, but I would assume it might have the symbols on the keys like the English International, or it might have some of the French diacritical forms more easily accessable.

English Canadian iTunes STORE categories in French

Just downloaded iTunes 7. All works fine but the categories in the iTunes STORE window are in French. Everything else in in English as it should be.
If I change the store to the US version, it reads fine in English. Is this a strange glitch in all the English Canadian versions that needs a fix?

Try clicking on the iTunes Store link on the upper left-hand corner of the iTunes page - just right of the Source List. ( It doesn't look like a link, until you scroll your mouse over the phrase.) It ought to then shift from French to Canadian English. Mine reverted a few times between English and French, but appears to have 'figured out' my linguistic preferences by now.

Why am I unable to type any character with English Keyboard in iOS 6?

Canadian English Keyboard, Chinese Keyboard, all work well, but I cannot even type a symobol, or anything else with the U.S. English keyboard. I tried to change the layout, but didn't solve this.

It's not actually the routers that is causing the "cap" you are talking about.
The fact you are making interventions into the broadband line, is causing the dslam to see signal interuptions.
The dslam runs line management and if it sees successive interventions, sees it as line "flapping" ....
with a reduction in line IP profile and associated throughput. Your netgear router if set up properly as Del
described, will admirably handle the broadband and probably better than the hub. Once connected and stabilised,
a continuous 3 day period of stability will see the line profile go back up on its own.
The netgear actually has some benefits over the hub, but also some shortfalls, but from a broadband throughput
perspective, the choice is sound.

What happened to the Canadian region settings?

I just upgraded to iOS 7 and to my shock noticed that the Candian regional settings are no longer Canadian .. they seem to just be a copy of the American format.
What happened to the proper Canadian regional format that was in previous versions of iOS? The French Canadian region setting is still correct in iOS 7, why isn't the English Canadian region setting correct anymore?

In iOS8 you can now select the "Canadian English" regional setting and you will get dates in ISO 8601 YYYY-MM-DD format. Thanks Apple, for having listened to Canada!
(You might want to change Siri back to the American female voice from the British-sounding male voice.)

App store in english, iTunes partially in french on iPhone 4?

I currently have 2 iPhone 4's, an iPad 2, and a MacBook Pro that I sync all my devices from using the same iTunes account. All my account settings are for Canadian English and the App store and iTunes all display properly on 3 of the devices... except on one iPhone 4 the iTunes store is half in english and half in french (The top bar displays in english "New Releases" "Top Tens" etc. the bottom bar displays as "Musique" "Recherche" etc.) The App store on this phone is 100% fine and in English. I have tried resetting all of my language settings and syncing the phone, I've logged out of the itunes account and back in again to no avail. Is my only option at this point restoring the phone in hopes it fixes this annoying issue? This happened after upgrading to iOS5

Finally went to the Apple store and unfortunately, the only way to fix it was to restore the software.
Make sure you back-up your phone first.
It's a bit of a pain, especially since the ringtones and ebooks did not uploaded back automatically on my iPhone once I restored the software and asked itunes to put everything back on the phone (and I lost 3 apps, thankfully they were free so I just downloaded them again).
But it works!!!

Non - American English Language Mail Spell Check?

I am curious, is there a way to set up spell check in Mail so that it corrects for Canadian English instead of US English? Pages, does this - and in fact for numerous languages - nicely, but I haven't seen where one can do this in the Mail app. You know, odd items like "travelling" vs "traveling" or "colour" vs. "color". That sort of thing. Our British friends must have encountered similar issues, come to think of it. What do you all do?

Spot on, Tom! Good that you mentioned the 2 parts to the solution, because when I only changed the spelling in Prefs/Language, etc. nothing took place. I needed to also go to Edit/Spelling etc. as you point out. Also, I shut down and re-booted to enable everything.

Can I take a canadian macbook pro to the UK and use it with a UK magsafe power lead?

I am moving to canada for 6 months and want to get a macbook pro over there. Will I have any power conversion problems when I bring it back to the UK? Can I use a UK magsafe macbook pro power lead without any changes or problems?

The only differences I can see between the Canadian English and British keyboards is the mapping of the alt and shift+alt modifiers to the symbols and diacritical marks, and there are few differences even there.
If you go to;
System Preferences > Language and Text > Input Sources tab. Top of the left column, tick (check) "Keyboard and Character Viewer", Bottom of window next to search field, tick "Show input menu in menu bar"
and; System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab; tick "show keyboard and character viewers in menu bar"
You can use the the input menu to switch between layouts at will and use the keyboard viewer to see the differences.

My ios update did not load to my iPhone completely. I have some of the new features but not all of them.

Where are you looking for Siri voice selection? It should be in Settings/General/Siri. You must also choose a language that has a choice of voices. US English and Canadian English do, UK and Australian do not.
What do you see in Settings/Wallpapers & Brightness? You need to tap one of the 2 images to see the selections available.
As I said, it is impossible that the installation is incomplete; you just aren't finding the new features. If you want to reinstall anyway, upgrade iTunes on your computer to 11.1, then connect the phone using a USB cable directly to the computer (not a hub), click on the iPhone's name in iTunes, then click the Restore iPhone button.

The update copied all my apps and content back to my iPad. Are all your apps on your computer's iTunes ? An iPad backup only contains your apps content and settings and not the actual apps, so for the restore to be able to work fully iTunes needs access to the apps. If you re-download them to your computer's iTunes you could then try restoring to your backup and see if that copies them and their content back to the iPad.
