Canadian Spelling

I have my region set to Canada in International System Prefs, but the OS X spell checker is underlining the Canadian spelling of words (it's telling me 'favourite' is incorrect and 'favorite' is correct). I need it to identify Canadian spelling as correct ('favorite' will cost me marks at my university, and it's very annoying to have a bunch of red in a correct passage). How do I change the default to Canadian spelling in Leopard?

Thanks! I was looking for it somewhere in system stuff.
You can also do it there by putting Canadian English at the top of the list in system prefs/international/languages. Use the Edit button to add it to the list.

The Canadian dictionary isn't compatible with Aurora. I was wondering if there could be a localization made for Canadian spelling because we spell with u's such as colour and we get dinged in school and don't look as good in business and such when we use the American spelling of words.

Thanks! I was looking for it somewhere in system stuff.

  • OSX 10.9.5 Canadian Spelling - Not Correct.

I've set my computer to Canadian English, but the default settings seem to prefer American English for most spelling. This means in most applications spellcheck is marking my text as mis-spelled. Can we look forward to a correction in the Canadian English dictionary with the upcoming OSX update?
    Thanks!

    Hey Bud,
So between the two of us, I think we can get this completely solved.
I did per your note and changed my "Preferred Language" to Canadian English. I also discovered that within the Mail application there is a dictionary that we can change to be marked as "Canadian English."
    In Mail:
Show Spelling and Grammar: Command and :
Then there is a drop down in the bottom of the window that you can choose the appropriate dictionary.
    Solved my problems with Mail.
    Thanks for all your help!!

  • Why can't I switch to Canadian English on Pages?

    Hi guys,
I'm having a hard time getting Pages to accept Canadian spelling. I've already Clicked to "View" Then "Show Inspector" Then "More" Then selected "Canadian English" in the toolbar.
However, even with the toolbar open, the moment I click on my pages document. It reverts from "Canadian English" to "English"
I've even reset the system languages to "Canadian English"
Not sure what to do here...There isn't a save option on the toolbar.

You set your preferred default language in System Settings. Drag Canadian English to the top of the list.
The Pages language setting is only for selected text. It is not a magic wand you wave over your document. It is for varying the spell checking for different parts of the text.

  • DHCP issues on wireless

When I connect to my wireless router (D-Link WBR-2310 I believe) using my mac, it gets the default self-assigned address instead of DHCP-assigned address. My PC connects fine wirelessly and wired over ethernet. If the router is reset, it works fine. If I assign manual address to iBook wireless, it works fine (by "works fine" I mean that I can connect to the internet).
Had similar problem with my old Linksys router (Linksys WRT54G) where the following devices had issues connecting to the internet iPod Touch, iBook, PowerBook, and MacBook. This was under unsecured, WEP and WPA settings. It seems that the issue is resurfacing with my current router.
Currently, I am using WPA security (I don't like WEP and neither does my PC). I would rather not switch security settings to unsecured due to the close proximity of my neighbours (yes it's canadian spelling!).
    Any suggestions?

I have encountered this same router and issue visiting my future in-laws for the holidays. DHCP with manual address appears to work, but I also still encounter occasional drops. The router is setup for WPA2 security, and support a mix of Mac and Win clients. I haven't put a lot of time into trying to fix it, but here is what I know so far:
    1) Sometimes it does just work with DHCP
    2) DHCP with manual address works, but will still drop occasionally for brief periods
    3) Sometimes, just turning the airport off then on again will resolve the issue and pull an address
    4) Just waiting about 30-60 seconds also seems to work -- usually
    5) Plugging into the wire works great!
I haven't sat by the router and worked on this, but it seems that occasionally the router just drops the signal, and with it the DHCP assignments. Something about the DHCP implementation is very slow, and it just take a while to get around to assigning an address to my machine. I haven't looked into firmware updates since it's not my box and I don't want to mess it up further and then leave, but that's certainly something to check into.
We also have an 12" PB that cannot even connect to the wireless with the "Error joining wireless network" message. Haven't been able to figure that one out at all.
They may just be getting an Airport or Linksys as a late x-mas gift here... (as my connection drops again while I type this! Airport off, airport on, wait 30 sec, and we're back)
    Cheers, and good luck!

  • How do I use my Canadian USD Visa/Mastercard on my Apple account?

I'm a Canadian, with homes in both Canada and USA.
I have a Visa and a Mastercard. Both currencies are USD.
My billing address on both cards are Canadian.
So how do I use my card in the App store? It always gives me an error about my location.
My billing addresses are Canadian, so I choose my country as Canada, but it says it's not valid in this country.
I also tried using one of my US addresses, same problem.
Very annoying. Both cards have the same problem!!

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
In which country is the bank?
To use the Canadian store, you must reside in Canada, have a verifiable bank card issued by a Canadian bank with a verifiable Canadian billing address. To use the USA store, you must reside in the USA, have a verifiable bank card issued by a US bank with a verifiable US billing address. Anything that is slightly different than these requirements will cause the system to reject your payment method.

  • How to have UK spelling on a US iPad

I have a US iPad, bought about 2 months ago. An ongoing issue for me is the autocorrect, which I use a lot because I am a poor typer, always corrects my Canadian (UK) spelling to US spelling. When I have looked through these forums, others talk about changing the language setting to English (UK) but my iPad does not have that option. It only has English, which seems to be a default to US English. Is there any way to get UK English on an US iPad? This drives me crazy, because even when I ignore spelling suggestions, my 'misspelled' words are still underlined in red.

Others had said this on the discussions I read searching for a solution, but I found that did not work on my iPad. That was actually the first possible solution I tried. I'm not sure why it did not work for me, or why British English did not appear as a language option until after I selected United Kingdom as a region. But its working now. So possible solutions:
    1. Select English (UK) as a keyboard; or
    2. Select United Kingdom as a region; and
    3. Select British English as a language*
*British English was not listed beside English which on my iPad was the first possible language, followed by French. It was listed at the end of the list of possible languages as British English, not English (UK). This made it a less obvious choice.

  • How can I get correct English spelling in Lightroom 3 (UK/Canada)

I tried to download the software from the UK site and the Canadian one but it kept sending me to the US site.  All I want is the 'u' in colour!  Is there proper spelling in another version out there and if so, how can I get it instead?
    A 'u'!  My kingdom for a 'u'!

FYI: For anyone else trying the translation file solution.
As brilliantly suggested by Dorin above, I modified a number of 'en' translation files in the Lightroom 3 installation.  I didn't have the 'en' directory under the 'Resources' directory but found that if I created this directory and put another translation file in it, Lightroom picked it up when loading.
All I ended up having to do was to add the specific lines I wanted modified.  For anyone interested, here are the contents of that file so far.  There may be minor mistakes as nothing translates from another language perfectly.

  • Selecting a spelling dictionary with AppleScript

I would like is to have several buttons on Mail's toolbar and have an Applescript attached to each that sets the spelling dictionary language. Can this be done?
    Daniel

I don't know for the buttons, but here is a script that can set the language used in the spelling dictionary (at least with Mail 3.5 and Mac OS X 10.5.6). The script has been written for the French Canadian keyboard and could need some minor changes when used with other keyboards.
    set L to "Français"
    tell application "Mail"
    activate
    tell application "System Events"
    tell application process "Mail"
set W to windows whose (subrole is "AXFloatingWindow" and (name contains "orthographe" or name contains "spelling"))
    if W is {} then
keystroke ":" using command down -- with the French Canadian keyboard
    set N to 1
click pop up button 1 of window N
click menu item L of menu 1 of pop up button 1 of window N
    delay 1
click button 1 of window N
    else
    set W1 to item 1 of W
click pop up button 1 of W1
click menu item L of menu 1 of pop up button 1 of W1
    end if
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell

  • UK English spelling

Pages(in iWork 09) keeps marking any UK English spellings, that do not coincide with american english, as mis-spellings. Iv'e check preferences in Pages and my system preferences, and everything seems to be fine. This constant annoyance is driving me back towards MS Word!

On old documents, including page layouts ones: open, select all - unlock any locked text boxes, apply British English, re-lock the text boxes, save and close. Open again to make sure!
I am thankful for this thread because I didn't know about the British English option, or even the Australian and Canadian versions of English! I've been "learning" to the US dictionary for over four years because you have to edit the default list.
I think this an appropriate thread post about a feature that I discovered when I reading about spelling in The iWorks Missing Manual. You may be writing in English (say) and wish to add a word or a whole block of a foreign language. You select the block or the word, go to the Inspector > Text > More and change to the language and it spell checks for that selection. And, apart from the spelling, it saves learning the key strokes for accents on words like francais (cedilla c) or fuhrer (umlaut).

  • I wrongly changed my settings to the American store and now when I try to download updates for the apps my ipad 2 tells me I need to switch back to the Canadian store, how do I do that. Resident of Canada

I wrongly changed the settings on the apps page to the American store. Now I cannot download any updates because I am locked out and need to revert back to the Canadian store, how do I do that

Try going to the bottom of the Featured tab in the App Store app on your iPad and tap on your account id, tap on 'View Apple ID' on the popup and log into your account, and then select the Country/Region section and select Canada.

  • Pages '08 - spelling in British English

    Hi,
In Pages '08 when I open a word file I go to Inspector ---> Text ---> More ---> Language
I change this to British English as the american one always brings up spelling errors. The problem is that the change sometimes doesn't stick. In any case even if it does, the second I go to a new line it automatically reverts back to 'English'. Thus I want to know how to make the change permanent for at least this document if it's not possible to make it for Pages entirely.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Alex M

If any readers of my previous posting are wondering what I have ended up doing to resolve this problem. It’s thanks to Magnus in another thread, that I have set myself up with a Template, configured to spell check in British English, every time I open Pages. This is what he suggested:
If you want all new documents to use spell checking of another language, you have to go through the following steps, for each template you intend to use.
    1. Open a new document with the template you want to use.
    2. Open the Styles Drawer (View > Show Styles Drawer).
    3. Select the first style in the list. (This is often "Free Form".)
    4. Change the language in the inspector as described above.
    5. Click on the red triangle to the right of the style name in the Style Drawer, and in the menu that pops up, choose "Redefine Style from Selection".
    6. Repeat steps 3-5 for every Paragraph Style in the Style Drawer.
    7. Go to File > Save as Template, and choose a good name of the template.
    8. If you have only one template you always want to use, you can choose it in Pages > Preferences > General > For New Documents, where you select "Use template:..." and then click on Choose... and choose the template.
Note that you can have several styles in the same document for different languages. You can for example have one style called "French body" and another called "Italian body". You can even associate shortcuts to the styles, in the Styles drawer, so you quickly can change between one language and another.
So far it works very well for me. It seems to be the best answer until Apple gets around to having Pages work completely in British English... or other language forms... automatically, without the user having to constantly highlight and self-check their work as they proceed through a document.

  • Use the Mac OS dictionary vs. add on dictionary for spelling in Firefox

I have a series of questions related to the OS dictionary and about looking up the definitions of words and spelling. With Safari I could use Command+: to turn on Spell checker and loved using it. I have spell checker turned on with FireFox via Preferences/Advanced/Check my spelling as I type and like the other method better. I suppose I could get used to the method FireFox uses, but don't understand why cmd: can't work too. I even went in through system preferences and added it as a keyboard shortcut for Firefox without success. I dont' see anything in the pulldown menu's using that key-combination so what's blocking it? Another important feature that doesn't work is I can't click on a word to look up the definition. That's an important feature and I use it often. Because of these I stopped using firefox and continue using Safari even though Safari doesn't work for a main site I visit. Safari is also generally slow and locks up constantly causing me a lot of grief. If the problems I wrote about worked I wouldn't use Safari again and would commit to using Firefox. I would appreciate knowing how to do what I'm trying to do. Thanks,
    Chris

Thanks for the suggestions. I installed firefox 16.0.2 and see additional features but still can't use the Mac dictionary or spell checker. I'm going to install the latest OS on this computer then I'll be able to install the latest version of firefox. The newest OS I can use on my other computer is 10.4.8 as it's a PowerBook and doesn't have an Intel CPU. Maybe I just can't do these commands.
    How do I reset FireFox?

  • ID CS4 spelling checker anomalies

    Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this?
I'm trying to spelling-check a long text document in ID CS4.  It's essentially a simple document -- all text, with some paragraph styles applied for formatting chapter headings, but nothing complex or layered.  The UK dictionary is applied in all styles, and the whole thing is set in a quality font (Adobe's Minion Pro), so I know there's no strange glyph coding going on.  Typographic quotes have been used.
The spelling checker is doing three strange things.
    1)  It's faltering after quoted speech.  If I have a line that says
    "Spell-check this," he said.
it seems to be treating the close-quotes as if they're the end of a sentence.  So the spelling checker halts on "he" and asks for it be capitalised, as if it were the start of a new sentence.  On every similar instance throughout the 400-odd page document, it's repeating this pattern.  Is this working as intended?  (That seems a strange choice for how it should work, if that's what it is.)  If not, does anyone know how to change this behaviour, please?
    2)  Words with a hyphen in the middle, like ill-fated, seem to stump the checker.  If I click on the button to add the word to my user dictionary, the button then greys out, as if it's been added, but at every subsequent occurrence of the same word the checker will stop and not recognise the word.  If I click on the "Ignore all" button, absolutely nothing happens -- the checker doesn't move on, and it will still stop at the next instance.  "Skip" will move the checker on, but then of course it'll stop at the next instance of the word.  Why is this?
    3)  Words that end with 's stump the checker completely.  It won't add them to the user dictionary (I can click on the button, but it doesn't grey out, and the next instance of the same word will hat the checker).  But neither the "ignore all" or the "skip" buttons work in this instance, either.
Any thoughts here?  I'm using version 6.0.5, so there are no updates to be had.

I used the dictionary window at the bottom of the CHARACTER window.
Resetting it in the prefs didnt do anything for me either.
It's still not perfect–you must select all the text, change the dictionary in the CHARACTER window and then spell check.
I also assume that the dictionary setting is buried in paragraph and character styles.
You can change the default language dictionary for a document or for all new documents you create. Changing the default dictionary in an existing document doesn’t affect text that has already been created or text that you type into an existing text frame.
    Open the document.
Select the Selection tool from the toolbar and make sure no items are selected in the document.
    Choose Type > Character.
Choose the desired dictionary from the Language menu on the Character panel. If you cannot see the language option in the Character panel, select Show Options and then select your language from the list.
Set the default language dictionary for all new documents
Start InDesign, but do not open a document.
    Choose Type > Character.
Choose the desired dictionary from the Language pop‑up menu on the Character panel. If you cannot see the language option in the Character panel, select Show Options and then select your language from the list.
