Cannot access address book following archive and install

Following an archive and install with 10.5.8 I find that when attempting to access Address Book, Font Book, Text Edit and Time Machine I get the following admonition on the screen, " You can't open the application because it is not supported on this architecture."
How can I restore these applications?

Sdgardne, thank you so much! Using your post and links I was able to restore my address book after upgrading my software and having trouble with my address book. And I am very technologically challenged so I appreciate having something I could understand and follow.

  • "Lost" library following Archive and Install

After various Leopard crashing issues, it was necessary for me to re-install Leopard on my G5 Imac. I used the “Archive and Install” option but, for reasons I don’t understand, I wasn’t able to use the “Preserve Users and Network Settings”.
After re-installing iLife 08, I’ve now lost my iPhoto and iTunes libraries. Whilst I did back-up both libraries to an external hard drive, the last back up was back in November so I would like to recover the newer photos. I have searched through the “Previous System” folder and have found an “iPhoto Library” file. This is 8Gb big so, presumably, it contains all my photos. I don’t know how to restore the library back into iPhoto, however.
The thing I don’t understand is that this “iPhoto Library” seems to be a single file rather than a folder that you can drill down into and locate all the photos (as it is on my external drive following my manual back-up). Please tell me it’s possible to restore the library (and all albums, events etc) from this single file!
    All help gladly received.

With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
I have searched through the “Previous System” folder and have found an “iPhoto Library” file.
Drag it to your PICTURES folder and launch iPhoto. That should find everything.
Please tell me it’s possible to restore the library (and all albums, events etc) from this single file!
You cannot return to the old iPhoto Library Folder system. Period. There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Cannot run java program after archive and install

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and appreciate the help and advice given here.
Yesterday, I did an archive and install on my system which install 10.4.3. Afterwards, I installed X11 and did the software updates which brought my system back to 10.4.8. It also installed Java 1.3.1, 1.4.2, and 1.5 (J2SE5).
Prior to the archive and install, I had no problems executing a java program either in the command line in an X11 window or using Eclipse. However, when I try now I get the exception message "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:". I checked my CLASSPATH and it's not the problem. I am able to compile, and execute the javadoc command. If I type java -version I get
    java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-112)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-64, mixed mode, sharing)
Under Eclipse, I am able to see the Java versions under Preferences - Java - Installed JREs but if I go to the Run -> Run As menu, I see (none applicable).
Thanks for any suggestions to fix this.

  • No video following archive and install

I have performed an archive and install on my iBook and now when I restart there is no video. It is not a hardware issue because there is video when I boot from the install disk. I have also tried subsequent archive and installs but they have the same result: I clearly hear the disc running and the startup chime but my screen remains blank. Does anybody have any idea what is going on?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Did you use a retail 10.4 installer disk?
The iBook G4's minimum operating system was 10.3:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
So I don't see how you could have had 10.0.x on your iBook before, unless your iBook was not an iBook G4. Can you verify which iBook you actually have you are installing it on?

  • Cannot access address book after software update

I am unable to access the default address book after doing the software update - I restored my backup and everything is there except for my contacts.  When I open my address book it is labeled personal and there are no addresses and when I add a contact it does not show up, but I noticed when I go into options it shows only default under address books with 99 entries and when I try to add a contact it does not show in the list on my phone but the number of entries in the default book goes up so they are going into that one but I cannot access it?  Any idea how I can get my contact list back? (hope this makes sense to someone )
    Thank you

  • Cannot access address book contacts in yahoo mail. Firefox 4. Contacts list will not load. With Windows Explorer, no problem.

Recently, yahoo mail upgraded their program. When I try to access my contacts (address book) the contacts list won't load. The little spinning icon just keeps spinning. I think this is a Firefox problem because Internet Explorer works okay. Also, I have problems accessing some secure sites using Firefox 4, but not with Explorer. I prefer Firefox. How can I resolve this?

I have no access to my Yahoo contacts. I cannot search or browse them. The only way I can get ONE is by adding the contact from an email. Then, if I ask to see more contacts either through the partial alphabet buttons or to see the entire list of contacts, I'm back to the same search page where NOTHING happens. Did I say this is VERY frustrating?? HELP

  • Cannot launch Address Book after Tiger re-install

    Hi
I have just had Tiger re-installed to my iBook G4 and have got everything going again, iphoto, ical, iTunes, Safari bookmarks from my external drive back up - except AB. It appears in the dock but just bounces when I try and open it. I have copied all the AB files I could find from the back up drive to the iBook HD but still nothing. I am I doing anthing wrong - can I re-install AB on its own from the Tiger install dics? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Yes you can reinstall just AddressBook from the Tiger installation disks. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301229 for details.
Once you do that, I would download the 10.4.11 COMBO update and reapply it. Get it here.
Don't forget to run Disk Utility and verify your hard drive before you start, and repair permissions on your hard drive before and after you reinstall AddressBook and the combo update.

  • Upgraded BB to V5.0.0.973 and DM to 6 - Now cannot syn address book (address book not installed)

When I go to the DM software and organizer, I can sync my contacts however the address book has a (not installed) after it.
I have removed and reinstalled the latest DM software according to instructions thinking that would help however I still have the same issue.
How can I get my address book to sync?  I was able to do this prior to upgrading with no problems.

    Hey pms1228,
Sorry for the delay in replying.
I would suggest you follow a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Manager which is different that just going to add/remove applications in Windows.
Follow all the steps in this KB article:  www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB02206
After you're done, restart the computer.
Then download BlackBerry Desktop Manager from www.blackberry.com/desktop

  • Getting My Mac Book Pro in Order Post Archive and Install

    Hi there,
My 17" Macbook Pro recently closed down on me, giving me three longs beeps and not starting up again. I archived and installed, for the first time ever, and was relieved when my Mac bumped back into life with all of my work and apps stashed away in 'Previous Systems'. I then embarked on going through 'Disk Utility' to create a disk image of the preserved work (I was following advice from the Mac support site) but the down load process was so slow I gave up and have resorted to sorting through the previous system manually and dragging info across into the new setup. I am completely green to this and have no idea if I am doing the right thing?
However, I also have some issues:
My spotlight search does not work, I type in a search item then get the spinning wheel, and spotlight closes down?
I want to reset my mail to just the way it was, with all my old sent and received messages. I can't even get mail to work, I get:
The server error encountered was: The server “[email protected]” cannot be contacted on port 110.
    Any advice here?
I am running OSX 10.5 and I tried to do the hardware test but the computer told me it cannot be run on this computer??
    Thanks in advance
    James

Your profile says you have a Powerbook, and yet your question is regarding a MacBook Pro. MacBook Pros and Powerbooks are totally different machines on the inside. If the issue is with the MacBook Pro, you need the MacBook Pro installer discs to run the hardware test. If it is with a Powerbook, then you need the Powerbook installer discs. If you have the correct discs according to this, it may be your firmware installation at one point failed. That's sometimes the reason for the three long tones. Here's a guide to the tones at startup on Intel Macs (MacBook Pros):

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341

  • How do I get my addresses back after an Archive and Install procedure?

I recently had to archive and install because something was really wrong with my desktop. Now the desktop works fine but how do I get my address book application to open with all my former data in it? The address book application opens but there is NOTHING in it except apple's card and my user card? What I am asking is how to restore all my data after an archive and install procedure. Thank you in advance!

    whatrulookinat wrote:
Yes I archived and installed with the disk that came with my MBP and then reinstalled snow leopard and then did software upgrades....
you shouldn't have done that. if you wanted to reinstall snow leopard (why btw?) you should have just reinstalled it over the existing snow leopard installation directly. installing an older OS version over the newer one ( like leopard over snow) is not recommended by apple and can lead to problems. it also does not let you preserve users. your old home directory should be located inside the Previous system folder. see this link on how to extract your data from it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2196
specifically, for the address book you need to copy the folder homedirectory/library/application support/address book from the archived home directory to the corresponding location on the new one.

  • I have been working on a book and have 418 photos already in my book.  All of a sudden I cannot access the book format to see the multiple view, spread view, or single view.  I can no longer see my book although I still see the collection with 418 photos

I have been working on a book and have 418 photos already in my book.  All of a sudden I cannot access the book module and clicking on the multiple view, spread view, or single view does not take me back to the book I have been working on.  I can no longer see my book although I still see the collection with 418 photos under collections.  What I do see is a blank template for a new book and I can't find the unfinished book I started with 418 photos.  It is like the new empty template is somehow covering it up.  How do I get back to the book I have been working on?

Is it possible you mistakenly clicked on a [Clear Layout] button?
But a great hint is- Always click on the [Create a Saved Book] button, early in your new book design.
Then you have a permanent link to the book in the Collections panel. (In addition to the standard collection of your selected images)
Note: a Book Collection shows an icon that looks like a book.
Every time you come back to edit the book, open the Book Module by clicking on the white arrow that appears on the end of your Book Collection title. (The title as saved)
Re-opening a book without using the "Saved Book" option can have unpredictable results.
A "Book" Collection is like a "Smart Collection" because anything you do to the book design, change pages, change images, etc,  is automatically updated in the Saved Book collection.

  • Cannot log in after archive and install

Hello, everyone. ive been searching the support pages of the apple site for an hour and i cannot seem to find a resolution to this...
I just peformed an archive and install ad now i cannot log in. i think this happened once before and i called apple support and i was told to log in as root. the problem i am having is that the login window does not give me the option to change the user field, it only allows me to type a password. every time i type my password, the login screen shakes. so even if i wanted to type root into the user field, i cant. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you.
p.s. i was running tiger but lost my tiger disc so i am using the disc that originally came with my g5 which has panther on it...
    dayna

    Hi, Dayna.
    1. Be sure the Caps Lock key isn't active: passwords are case sensitive. You may see an exclamation point on the right side of the password field if the Caps Lock key is engaged.
    2. There was a similar problem if one performed an Archive and Install (A&I) of Jaguar (10.2) over Panther (10.3): see "Can't log in after installing Mac OS X 10.2 over 10.3." I've not heard of a similar problem with performing and A&I of Panther over Tiger, but it may be related. However, before trying the advice therein to perform the A&I without selecting "Preserve Users and Network Settings" you'd need to have a backup of your data, otherwise you risk losing everything in your account. IMO, the most expedient solution would be to buy a replacement Mac OS X Tiger disc. If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, that would be the quickest place to purchase one.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot Archive and Install--help.

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and am having a number of problems since the upgrade. Would like to Archive and Install to get a clean System folder, but that option is now blanked out and only "Erase and Install" is available. Permissions are repaired and Disc verifies fine. What can I do to restore the ability to Archive and Install?

From the yellowed banner item at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235 click the linked article and find http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306877
Alternatively, reinstall Leopard via E&I and migrate from the bootable backup/clone of your previous Tiger installation—assuming you followed normal practices and made one.

  • Archive and install cannot acess admin

I did and upgrade from 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4 using the "archive and install" which creates a previous System folder 1. I cannot acsses anything asking for admin and password, if i go to the accounts in the system prefs pane.
It has me listed as "standard user" so i can't even change me to Admin because it wants my admin and password to unlock.
I have already used the install disk to change password, the only change was to my login name and password.
I did an archive and install so that i could if possible use any of the files from the previous system from 10.3.9 in any of the Tiger's system.
I done a lot of searching here, some i knew few i didn't.
    Suggestions anyone?
    Steve

That is very strange -- the OS is supposed to make sure there is always at least one admin user account. Niel's helpful link should get you going again, but you might want to consider calling AppleCare about this anyway. They should know if something in the installer or migration assistant is buggy enough to let this happen.

  • Archive and install problems

    Hi:
After filling out the Apple troubleshooting form, I followed the advice and took my machine to an authorized reseller/service center.  They recommended an archive and install, plus a new and larger HD(WD Caviar 750: he said it would not take a larger one), promised that nothing would change or be lost (the machine is used for 2 purposes only: 60,000 photos and email).  With so many images, I have an extensive keyword list which enables me to find them instantly using Adobe Bridge (CS 2).  Without the keywords, the images might as well be lost. Now, I have the new drive and the old 250G drive.
The technician called to say he was installing Leopard at no charge, rebuilding my library, defragmenting the hd, resetting my mail from pop to imap and that everything would work as before.
What doesn't work: mail notifies me constantly that the server has no certificate, that the server can't send the mail and sent mail often just sits.  Mail(I am mobile me subscriber) no longer auto completes even though that preference is checked.  Address book is empty.
Bridge lost the keyword master structure which is kept in an xml file.  That file was empty.  I dragged the original xml file with all the keywords from an external back up hd into bridge on the new drive but nothing happened.  The words are there but bridge doesn't use the file.  Bridge shows only the default keyword list.  The images, however, retained their exif data and keywords.
When I open a folder of images, bridge now has to spend minutes rendering the thumbs.
I realize this is an apple not an adobe forum but perhaps these symptoms reveal the solution. In addition, I don't have any leopard install disc so see that I now have no way to use hardware test or safe boot if necessary.  Even though I have my Tiger discs, the tech. insisted on installing Leopard from whatever disc he has, I guess.  I thought all the discs are registered to this machine and to me so not sure how that is ok.
Thanks for any suggestion.  I've searched the adobe forums but can find nothing for my version of the software, only for newer versions.
sorry this is so long.  I will be very grateful to anyone willing to take the time to wade through it.

    Great reply from Limnos, btw.
I'd be tempted to try a Tiger Install, but you'd have to erase one of the drives.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
