Cannot access backup made before last iOS update

This past Saturday (the 16th) I plugged my iPhone into my computer for it to get the latest update. It showed it was backing up then went on to do the update. It was taking forever so I left to get dinner. Came back and the phone was bricked. No error messages on the iTunes screen. The phone showed an icon of the USB plug pointing upwards to another icon.
Unplugged the USB and plugged it back in. iTunes then showed an error which I looked up on this site; it said I had to do a hard restore. No problem, right? After all, I had a current backup.
Except when it was all done the phone did not have my data on it. It was like it was brand-new. Checked in Preferences:Devices and the backup doesn't show. Checked the folder on the drive and I can see it (7/16/11 @ 6:58pm) but it's not in the list.
Oddly enough, even though I plug it in at least once a week (can charge using bedside clock/radio or in car) and it always says it's backing up, NONE of those backups there. The only one it will recognize and use was made 4/23/11 (oh, and it shows a backup made after the restore which is useless)!!!!
Now what? Why won't it show and access the one backup I need? Contacts, photos, app data... a lot has changed since April and all those changes are in a backup iTunes claims doesn't exist.

Are you using a web browser (Safari), or the Facebook app?
Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

Yes you can update the iOS, but you must do it through iTunes on a computer that is running the latest version of iTunes.

ok here is the issue.
After i upgraded the IOS to IOS 6.1.2 I'm not able to use mobile internet as i have a data sim card.
As the settings provided by the service provider are not compatible with IOS 6.1.2 and the service provider cannot do anything about it, as it's something that has to be ressolved by apple.

Thanks Texas Mac Man. My iPad is running 7.0.6 and it was after that update my iPad was no longer syncing through iTunes on my laptop. My iPhone, also on 7.0.6, has no issues. This means that:
I can not verify the iCloud username because it is a non-excisting email with no alternative e-mail adress
I can not delete the iCloud account because I do not have a password
I can not use forgot password because the iCloud-ID is a non excisting e-mail adress
I can not turn off "find iPhone" because the iCloud username is not verified
My Appel-ID is different from the icloud-ID with only one letter after the @ prefix, and that is the reason for this whole mess. I was supposed to type my Appel-ID as my iCloud-ID, but mistyped and approved the "new" and wrong iCloud-ID. During the last IOS update I activated the "find iPhone" functionality as a part of the installation procedure. The result is listed in the list above.
Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Since the last iOS (7.1.1) update I can't send pictures or even 20 second video clips on the iphone 4s, what gives? It seems everytime I install an update I lose more control over my iPhone then what I had when I purchased it!

I,m having and identical problem. In fact when I went to type this my split keyboard is dead center on the page.
When I hold down the button on the bottom right corner when I'm in split mode I get the option to Dock and Merge or just to Merge. There is no option where the keyboard stays split once it's been docked and merged.
Help! I have small hands and it's so much easier to type in split screen.
