Cannot access desktop environment, neither gnome nor awesome

Hi All,
My Archlinux has been installed for a while when suddenly, maybe after one `yaourt -Syu` and reboot, cannot reach my desktop environment(gnome).
At first, it seems like gdm doesn't run. So I manually run it, but the gnome reports an error in the GUI (the error is very general, so I have no idea what happened at all). Then I tried to install awesome, but I can't access to it as well.
I've tried to switch my graphical driver from nouveau to nvidia, but I still can't get into Gnome. Surprisingly, I get into awesome successfully. However, I failed to open any terminal or application but quit awesome.
I've tried to replace sysvinit with systemd-sysvcompat after switching my graphical driver back to nouveau. By doing that, gdm seems to run at boot up, but I still can access Gnome, because the computer just halt and the graphical interface never come up. Neither can I access awesome.
I can't figure out where the problem is. My desktop environment used to function normal for a long time. What could possibly be wrong after any upgrade?

1)  What was updated.
2)  What are the errors.
3)  What can you find in the various logs and/or journal.

Whilst I can access the web interface, somehow I cannot access Desktop Intelligence.  When I logon I get the following error message:
[repo_proxy 13] SessionFacade::openSessionLogon with user info has failed(CMS host 'Desktop01' address was resolved properly, but cannot be reached to establish a CMS connection. Verify that your router/firewall allows communication on port 6400(hr=#0x80042a01)
Port 6400 on the machine is LISTENING, which tells me it's open; Windows (WinXPSP2) is off.  The machine I'm logged on to is usually joined to the corporate (work) network, and, somehow tracert to the host indicates that the connection is passing through the Internet.
Trying to connect using the <internal ipaddress>:6400 is unsuccessful as well.  Any ideas, pls?

You need to be able to connect to the CMS port. If this is not working even via telnet then there must be a firewall rule somewhere preventing it. Unless traffic is allowed to pass to the CMS on it's configured port (6400 by default) then any further troubleshooting is unnecessarry.

  • Cannot access desktop to shoe files or folders since using migration assistant to transfer data from my old iMac to my new one.  What do I need to do to access the desktop?

    Cannot access desktop

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Power Manager and Access Connections crash, neither help nor solution from Lenovo!?!

    Hello
I've already posted here on the forum several weeks ago about the obvious problem that Lenovo has with the latest version of the Power Manager and the Access Connections which both crash either on startup or while tryibg to open it.
So far there has been neither an update, nor a solution nor an official statement from Lenovo about that problem that consists rightnow for over two month!
When searching the forum I see the same all over again: Unanswered threads, solutions that don't solve anything at all and so on...
And just if someone here comes up with comments like:
"work's here" or "just rollback to the old version", what is the point of writing software that doesn't work?? And why not giving ANY SUPPORT AT ALL???!!!
I really would at least like to see an official statement saying "we work on it". After buying one of the most expensive notebooks on the market (and in my opinion still one of the best) hat would be the least one could expect form a "award wining" company like Lenovo...

Hello, I am a Help Desk Consultant at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and currently, we've had many problems with access connections, 4965 agn wireless card, and its drivers.
    Symptoms:
    1) Wireless card is detected my windows device manager
    2) Wireless card is NOT detected by access connections, intel wireless utilities/tests/etc
    Other related information:
    1)  Events with ID 7036 + source: NETw#v## (the # stand for numbers, I can't quiet remember which ones but the one after the v is a 5
    2) Rollback driver is NEVER an abailable option
    3) Every failure case with same symptoms came in starting mid September
    4) If you select "show hidden devices" in device manager, there is a huge number of devices, most of which seem to be repeats
After many hours of debugging and fustrated complaints, I have determined that it could be one of many problems:
    1) Teredo tunnelling: Apparently, atheros/intel/access connections won't find the wireless card if teredo has been enabled or something
    2) Power management: A default setting is "let windows turn the wireless off it there's not enough power" in wireless properties>configure>power management
    3) Driver update combination conflict: between a update on 9/21 and present time, there's something horribly gone wrong
If anyone has a definitie solution to this, please post.

  • Cannot access Desktop Itunes Library from Laptop

I have my Itunes library on my desktop pc which I access from my laptop with my ipod classic with no problems. My wife now has a 4th gen Ipod touch and i am trying to set up her laptop so she can access the same library and manage =her music via a playlist. From what I've read this should be pretty straight forward but I can't get it to work.
The laptops are running vista and the desktop XP, all with the latest version of Itunes.
The library was in my account on a user disk on the desktop. The system disk does not have enough room for the library (about 100 GB) so I moved it to a top level directory on the user disk. The user disl is shareable and I have ade the itunes library sharable. When I point itunes on my laptop to the new location I can access the new library. When I point my wife's itunes to the new library, itunes seens to accept it (no error message) but itunes stays on the local laptop library. On both laptops a drive is mapped to the user disk.
Any ideas what may be going on and how to fix it. I'm assuming itunes can be open on several systems at once? I also have home sharing on.
    Thank,
    George

    Welcome to the Apple community.
What are you doing when you get this message, are you trying to set up homesharing or trying to access your library.

  • Cannot access desktop/finder/trash... itunes locked error msg?

    I suddenly can't access these 4 things: desktop/finder/trash/itunes.
I was throwing away files, and wonder if I accidentally threw something important away?
With itunes, i get an error msg saying:

    No idea.

Try running Repair Permissions in Disk Utility.

  • Cannot access iTunes library in iPhoto nor in iMovie

I am using a macpro retina (although I had the same problem with older mac pro) with iphoto 11 and itunes 11. When trying to make a slideshow in the iphoto app my itunes library or playlists do not appear in music pane.  I asked this question before and go some instructions which led me to drag iTunes Music Library.xml to desk top make an adjustment but it did not work.  I still have iTunes Library.xml page on my desktop.  How do I fix problem and what should I do with iTunes Music Library.xml on desktop?  I am using iTunes 11.1.3 (8)OS Mountain Lion 10.8.5, and iPhoto 11.9.4.3

I got this problem solved with a combination of suggestions from discussions here and other fixes conducted at an Apple store one to one

  • Iphone4 wont connect to home wifi connects to neighbors..others iphones ipads connect to this wifi cannot change it and cannot access apps store. Does nor request password just "cannot access"

Iphone 4 wont connect to home wifi but connects to neighbors open wifi.  Family members with iphones can connect to the wifi automatically and Mac compiuter in home connects to this wifi and this iphone did connect automaticcally until a few weeks ago.  Does not request password when try to connect to own wifi..just says "cant access.". Also cant access the Apple apps store to purchase apps but all other function operate normally. Apple store tech says nothing wrong with phone. It connected to their wifi and coud access apps store from their wifi.     This iphone belongs to son who is autistic.  I am mother trying to resolve this issue and very frustrated.  Have reset router but no change.

Based on the symptoms, your phone is fine, and the Router is the problem.   Try http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398.  Specifically the "forget this network" step.  I would also consider resetting the wifi network password.  Sometimes that will allow a connection.

Well, if you don't necessarily need pulseaudio, I'd just uninstall it. I've never had any problems with alsa and awesome wm. However, if you need pulseaudio, like I did, then some applications are going to throw errors. Is the sound muted for any sound or just when you use a specific application? If its all applications, try just using alsa and see if the problem persists. If its a specific application, you might not be able to do anything about it depending on the application. Either way, install pavucontrol, which is a great gui for pulseaudio. You might notice that the channel is muted or something else through pavucontrol. Check that dbus is started in the daemons in /etc/rc.conf. Check the troubleshooting section here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … figuration.

There's actually an example on the awesome wiki.
What I do is different, though:
    local lock = "slimlock"
    local ck = "dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=\"org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit\" "
    .. "/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Manager org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager."
    local suspend = "dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=\"org.freedesktop.UPower\" "
    .. "/org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend"
    local logoutmenu = {
    { "Shutdown", ck .. "Stop", freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'system-shutdown' }) },
    { "Reboot", ck .. "Restart", freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'gtk-refresh' }) },
    { "Suspend", suspend, freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'media-playback-pause' }) },
    { "Lock screen", lock, freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'system-lock-screen' }) },
    { "Log out", awesome.quit, freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon({ icon = 'system-log-out' }) },
Then just add logoutmenu to your myawesomemenu table, and replace lock with whatever screenlocker you use. Or remove the "Lock screen" entry from the table if you don't use one.
If you don't have awesome-freedesktop-git installed, just remove the freedesktop.utils.lookup_icon parts. I just like having icons on everything.
    Screenshot: http://ompldr.org/tOTJ0Ng
This is the exact tutorial that I found on the wiki for implementing a shutdown menu. I may be wrong though, but I assumed that it needed a password to be used since it uses gksu.
Sorry everyone, I just went and assumed doing it with policykit would be difficult, since there aren't any tutorials for it. I shall look into it by myself.

  • IPad re-instiall now cannot access iTunes apps? 16 Aug 12

Had a problem with app yesterday (14/08/12), would not update and download a magazine I subscribte to - would go through the entire download (5 minutes) and once the bar indicated the download was complete, I recieved a message "Download failed...blah blah blah" . So I reinstalled iPad from my mac book. There were some error messaged but it sort of sorted itself out (had to sync several times to transfer everhything across (music/video/photo etc).
However, now I cannot update apps on neither iPad nor macbook. Just get this message "Accessing Itunes store' going on for a few hours. I can download podcasts no problem, just the apps an issue. Unfortunately I have to reload my magazine subscribtions - and when I try do so I am advised fie cannot be found as file is missing (cannot relay verbatim here as message takes some time to appear on iPad - everything very slow)
Found a link which referred to Key Chain First aid to resolve and whwere to find it. However, have looked but but cannot find that specific application - maybe Key Chain First aid no longer supplied (I have a new retina machine - 1 month old, first time mac user).

  • WM only or Desktop Environment?

I am planning on installing Arch on my main desktop and debating over whether I should use just a window manager like openbox or a desktop environment like gnome.
Is there any reason for using a desktop environment like gnome over just a window manager?
I know that they come with panels/docks/menus to make the system easier to use, but those things can be added as needed. Is there anything that Gnome/LXDE etc can do that Openbox cannot?

arctor wrote:Essentially... is a DE just something that strictly adds ease of use to the system or does it add extra functionality?
That's the thing: what constitutes "ease of use" typically varies from person to person.  As jasonwryan mentioned above, one person can find a DE incredibly easy to use, whereas another could just see it as needless bloat getting in the way of their workflow/hogging system resources.
It's kind of like comparing apples and oranges here; one isn't necessarily superior to the other (i.e. doesn't necessarily "add" or "subtract" anything), they're just different ways of working with your system.
If you really want something more "objective", though: a DE (as far as I understand it) is designed to create a more "desktop metaphor"-like workflow, whereas a plain WM is just that, a WM; it manages windows, and that's it.  You can mix and match components, though, to get an experience that can seem more or less like a DE, but without installing any of the big packages (e.g. you can use something like openbox as your WM and install xfce4-panel by itself to provide a menu/window list area, without installing Xfce proper).
