Cannot access my ipod

someone please help ive restored itunes over and over again and i cannot seem to access my ipod 80gb 6th gen from no where, ive change usb ports, and ive also tried to check for errors from my computer but i get a message saying "this check could not be performmed because windows cant acces the disk"
and when i connect it i get a message saying "please insert a disk into 'My Ipods name' (K"
but on my ipod i get
the conected screen and it also charges

I may be wrong, but I believe in order to play music from your iPod through your computer, you must set it to manually updating.
Go to preferences (not sure what it is in windows, i think tools>>preferences).
Click on the iPod tab (the iPod must be connected)
Choose "manually update"
Click ok.
