Cannot access security & privacy

hey all
please can you help me with this 'all of a sudden" problem that i have encountered that is driving me absolutely insane.
i am trying to access the security and privacy setting under the system preferences tab but when i click on the icon a message pops up saying :
"You can’t open Security & Privacy preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
i have no idea where this came from!!
Is it because I have updated to the latest version of OSx mountain Lion??

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy the text — do not type it — into the Terminal window and press return:
file -b /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Security.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Security
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

In Tools - Options - Privacy....I cannot access the Privacy tab. I can open all the other Options tabs..just not Privacy.
Am I being hacked/tracked? thanks.

Try the Firefox SafeMode.
''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
# You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
# Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
• Cannot access secure connections on internet

Recently I my satellite series laptop has stopped allowing me to access secure connections on internet. When I spoke with my online bank support, they identified that I will need to reinstall my xp home operating system and this will recover it. Only thing is, is that it came pre-installed and I don't have any discs...
I don't want to pay a bomb to buy xphome again - any suggestions about how I can do this inexpensively? I am getting a new internet provider/digital tv etc on Thursday and the Engineer is coming to the house to install it, and I need to have this fixed before he comes (this leaves me a day and a half!!)
HELP!!! thanks! :)

Hi, before going to drastic solutions such as reinstalling the os, I would try to check if Internet Explorer is not at fault.
First, check that your security settings in "options" in IE are set to "default".
Also, make sure that the activ X bar is not blocking you from accessing these secure pages.
Try to install a different browser and see if it works (slim browser, Opera, Netscape...).
Slim Browser ( http://www.flashpeak.com/sbrowser/ ), works fine for me.
Have fun and let us know.

• I cannot access the PRIVACY menu from the Tools-Options menu to make changes to cookies and history. I can access every other menu on that page (General, Tabs, Content, Applications, Security, and Advanced. But Not PRIVACY. Please help.

I need to reset/change/clear my cookies, probably clear my cache, and change my history preferences. When I use the Tools-Options choice to bring up the appropriate menu (General, Tabs, Content, Applications, Privacy, Security, and Advanced) all allow me access to make changes (or not), the PRIVACY tab does not open up. It does no allow access to any info contained there in. It is like it doesn't exist or isn't even there. Also, in the Tools menu on the Firefox toolbar, both "Stop Private Browsing" and "Clear Recent History" are grayed out. What gives? Thank you for your help.

This can be caused by in incompatible/malfunctioning add-on. To test if this is the case follow the procedure in the [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.

Can you start Firefox in Safe Mode?
You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe Mode:
*On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
*On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
*Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)

• Cannot access security settings from firefox dropdown box in Windows 7 home premium (laptop)

This is a new HP laptop with Windows 7 Home premium
There is not a firefox world in upper left corner, there is a box that says firefox with a drop down which does not include security settings.

You have version 4.0.1. The Options dialog can be accessed either way --
orange Firefox button > Options > Security tab
Tools menu > Options > Security tab
To display the classic menu bar temporarily, tap the Alt key or press F10. To make that permanent (and replace the orange Firefox button), use View > Toolbars > Menu Bar.
Does that help?

• Mac Mini cannot access secure WiFi any longer.

Two days ago, my 8 month old Mac Mini dropped my wifi and would not reconnect. I have a Motorola router with AT&T U-verse. I reset router, computer but still kept receiving "timeout" error. I tried creating a new location, clearing out keychain but that didn't help.
Eventually I wrecked my network configuration files in Library->Preferences and reset the machine while also resetting SMC (unplug power and hold power button for 15 seconds). When machine booted back up, I was able to connect again until the first time my computer fell asleep. The connection could not be reestablished.
I started toying with the router setting - when I remove all security, I could access the network. Also, when I set the security to WEP instead of WPA, I could access the network but I was not asked for the key - the network showed up as unprotected which is troubling.
Does anyone know why I can no longer utilize WPA protected WiFi any longer? I am currently on OS 10.7.4.
Does Mountain Lion address any of Lion's WiFi wonkiness?

Very odd.. kind of thing that Mavericks does though.
What is the router and dns values in the mini cf the MBPs..
The TC should be in bridge so all connections are getting IP from the Comcast router. They should therefore all get the same values.. for router (gateway) and dns.
Check this also by doing a ping to the internet.
Ping your ISP home address. if it does not respond by name test it by IP address. you can pick this up from another computer that does work.
If you have dns issues then simply change the dns to manual setting and use 8.8.8.8 which is the google universal one.
Mavericks is very ipv6 .. I am not sure how relevant but make sure ipv6 is set to link local for both wireless and ethernet connections.

My browsing history is incomplete, it only shows through August. I also cannot access the privacy tab in the options folder, nor can I click on the stop private browsing.

Maybe your Trend Micro took over the Privacy tab in Options?

The Apple ID exists. The email address you used to create it may not, but the Apple ID does. Call AppleCare and ask to speak to someone in account security.
