Cannot activate cellular data network (intermittent)

During the past couple weeks I've noticed the data connection on my iPhone 4 (iOS 4.3.4), particularly when moving across town, is unavailable. It's been fairly consistent in not being able to use the data connection and I've received errors saying the cellular network cannot be activated or that Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the Internet. If I turn airplane mode on and then back off it lets me use the data network again.
I'm wondering if anyone else has been having this problem.
Thanks

Could be, but I'd first suggest restoring the phone, as you are now doing.

  • Cannot activate cellular data network - iOS flaw

After over a week of chasing down this problem since getting my new iphone5, I have come to the understanding through research and discussing with Apple Genius Bar that there is a significant flaw in the itunes / iOS ecosystem when restoring old backups during an upgrade process.
I started with a happily working unlocked iphone4  which was dutifily backed up before I trundled down to the Optus shop for a new iphone5. Got my new i5, bought it home and started the restore process. This was when my week of pain started. Everything worked fine and all data and contents came across. I just couldn't establish a cellular data connection. Internet through wi-fi was fine.  After spending countless hours on the phone with the telco (with at least 8 reboot/reset network settings/etc), two new sim cards and one replacement phone, I discovered that the issue was none of these. The problem only exhibited itself after restoring my old backups. If I fully reset and deleted everything on the phone, it worked and I could establish a 3G connection.
After another long chat with Apple at a retail shop and an appointment at the Genius Bar, the answer is - Bad luck, you have to set up the phone from scratch and lose all your data that wont sync across from itunes.
I was a bit miffed at this and started some research across the communities and noticed I am not the first to strike this issue. Surely there must be a way to recover some of the information without causing the phone to stop working with 3G data.  The Apple tech told me to investigate 3rd party options as Apple do not provide the tools to do this.
Interestingly, the Apple diagnostics tool that was run on my old iPhone4 to determine if there were corrupt apps or data that may have been backed up only indicated that the iTunes Store app had been troublesome.
Poor user experience from this Apple product (iPhone 5). All my other purchases/upgrades have been seemless and worked out of the box.

  • Could not activate cellulare data network??? what is the solution please.

everytime i try to log to the internet through the internet service provider on the phone, i get this message   (could not activate cellulare data network)
I was loginig before via wifi meanwhile i do not have wifi and i am forced to use the service provider internet.
What should I do , I tried the soft, hard reset as well as the restart with no sucsses.
    any advice???

I had the same issue "Cannot Activate Cellular Data Network" sometimes says "No Internet..or You are not subscribed to a Data Network". The phone works fine on WiFi.
I noticed this issue only yesterday when tried to access my emails via 3G Data, this may have started happening when I recently updated to 4.3.2 and my phone has never been Jailbroken.
I found a fix that worked for me..I'm using T-Mobile Germany.
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings>enter Pin code if you have lock enabled>choose Reset Network Settings..
Remember doing this may also erase known WiFi networks, so you may have to enter the details again to get connected to a known WiFi network.
My 3G data started to work again after I did the above steps to default factory network settings.
T-Mobile Germany wasn't much help at all. All they could tell me was some crap about my config was in the wrong contract, Duh??
They probably did nothing to fix the issue and I suspect the above resets steps resolved it for me. Give it a try..
    Cheers!!

  • HT1976 Hi, visiting USA, and bought an I-Phone 5, unlocked. Then bought monthly pay as you go $25, and added a features package. Then found I needed to be on the $50 plan. Still says cannot activate cellular data!

    Hi,
Bought from Apple store an unlocked I-phone 5.
Bought a basic pay as you package 10c per minute.
Then decided I wanted data coverage, so went for the $25 per month and a data packeage.
Phone kept saying "could not activate cellular data network" as I was  "you are not subscribed to a cellular data service".
AT&T, said not available on this plan.
Checked the small print, and it sad I needed £50 plan. Paid more money to go on the pay as you go $50 plan, addde more to the data package.
    Same messages.
Now, cannot get an AT&T e-mail address to ask, no help from the auto messages.
    Any ideas?
Apart from the "you've been tricked?"

    Hi,
Yep, tried to phone just an ordinary store, and they were uselee; basically it was translated as "we just take your money"
You are correect, need corporate one.
I am travelling around USA on motorbike, so will have a look.
Howver, I thought someone would have a quick answer.
Is there even an e-mail address or phone number.
I tried the 611 and got no suitable option, and there did not appear to be a suitable e-mail either>
Whatever, just found out that aT &T do not offer this on pay as you go, not matter how much money the plan is!!

  • Could not activate cellular data network message

I am on Vodafone UK and mostly have my phone on 2G mode. I get good EDGE coverage 5 bars but I am intermittently getting "Could not activate cellular data network" message. The settings are correct, as it sometimes works, 3G data is fine over the same APN. A Blackberry connected via EDGE seems to work fine.
Vodafone insist its not an issue with the Network, as I work for a contractor with them I also had the radio side of things checked and all seems ok. Now it could be a core network issue, SGSN or similar, or its bug in the iPhone firmware. I never had this issue prior to iOS4.
Anyone else, specifically having any problems with EDGE/GPRS? I would be interested to know.

    I had this problem at 1st with t-mobile 3g
connect it to itunes and it will say carrier update click accept on itunes that sorted it for me

  • ERROR: Could not activate cellular data network: PDP authentication failure

I have an iPhone 3g that was given to me by a friend a couple months ago. Before I got the phone i was on a plan with Softbank in japan with another cell phone. When i got the iphone i unlocked it so that i could use my old sim card with the iphone. everything worked out fine, i was unable to use the internet via 3g since it wasnt on my plan but i could text and make calls with no problem.
Everything was working fine until yesterday when i started getting this error message: "Could not activate cellular data network: PDP authentication failure"
once this happened i could no longer text or make calls. my iphone recognizes the sim card, shows one bar of signal, the network, and the 3g symbol. i have also rebooted, restored, reset network settings, and talked with Softbank; all had no help.
i have no idea how to fix it, any suggestions would be awesome.
    thanks.

  • HELP : Could not activate cellular data network ?

Hello i have just updated to OS4 and when i try to access my mails i get the following message:
"Could not activate cellular data network - you are not subscribed to a cellular data service."
What is going on? iTunes gave me message that it could not 'activate' me now and that i would have to try again later. I have since then plugged in my iphone numerous times in iTunes. I don't get this 'can't activate now' message but I still cannot access my mails in my phone and i still get the message above.
    no mails = help plz!!!!!
    thxs,
    me

sorry for delay in posting my reply. I have found that updating had in fact cleared all my cellular settings. basically it just needed to be reconfigured again. Why it cleared all the setting is a mystery.
Also, as a 3G user, I am not entirely convinced the new update is that good on the 'old' 3G. I have suffered from loss of performance and stability. My phone regularly gets stuck. Apps shut down of their own accord etc...
Am desperately waiting for the iPhone 4 to come out.

  • HT4623 My new iPad can no longer connect to the 3G network. I keep getting the message "could not activate cellular date network".

I updated my new iPad to the iOS 6 while connected to wifi. However, it will no longer connect to the 3G network. I keep getting the message "could not activate cellular data network" even though the 3G symbol appears normal. I have tried rebooting, but it still doesn't work. Please help!

    No. You can't

IPHONE 5:  can't receive calls and random error messages, such as "could not activate cellular data network" and "no connection - network unavailable, please connect to wifi or cellular network."  This occurs even when signal strength or wifi is operational, and it does not matter whether wifi is on or off.  ATT went through the standard protocol - resetting network, resetting sim card, etc.  No changes.  Other phones working fine in same region with same carrier.  Apple's solution is to restore software, but haven't gone there yet.  Anyone successfully addressed this/these issues?

I should point out that it worked when the iPhone was set back to factory settings, but when restored with the backup, data/internet no longer works again, and I get the "Could not activate cellular data network" error message yet again.
