Cannot activate Cover Flow in Safari 4

Upon launching Safari 4, I got a box asking if I wanted to use Cover Flow for my bookmarks. Not sure what this would do, and eager to explore the various changes to Safari first, I selected "not now." But now that I understand how it will work (and that my computer will support it), I would like to activate this feature, except that I cannot find any way to do that from the menu bar or preferences.
What am I overlooking?

It appears that images of pages in your history will load automatically, but getting the rest seems to depend on your actually visiting the site long enough for the page to download completely.
At least, that's how it's working for me. Visit a few sites and see what happens.

  • Eliminate cover flow in Safari 4?

    Hi--
How can I get rid of Cover Flow in Safari? I'd SO much rather have bookmarks display in a Column view like in the Finder. I don't care how pretty a web page is--I want to know which folder I put it in and what it's called.
For now, I've dragged the cover flow view all the way to the top of the window, but I'm left with a MacOS 9-feeling list of bookmarks folders with expansion triangles to locate anything. Quite frustrating.
    Thanks.

I agree with you. The "report bug" is rather a misnomer. When you open the Bug reporter, you'll find there are various options in addition to reporting a bug.
Otherwise, Apple Care, if your machine is under warranty, or this feedback page are other options for voicing your sentiments to Apple.
Regarding the "locking" suggestion, Safari continues to create image files whether or not you are using Cover Flow and/or Top Sites. The suggestion is designed to stop unnecessary space usage on the HD. To see how big the file has grown on your system, go to Your User Account>Library>Caches>com.apple.Safari folder. Single Click on the WebPage Previews folder, then Command/I to open the Info Panel. That's wasted space on the HD if you are not using Top Sites or Cover Flow.

  • How to get rid of Cover Flow in Safari since updating to OS 10.5.8 ?

Updated to 10.5.8 and when I open Safari Bookmarks this huge Cover Flow screen comes up. I just want my listings back without this graphics stuff, Tom

    Hi
Follow the suggestions outlined in this post. These suggestions lock down Top Sites, Cover Flow and Safari Caches. Apply one (or all) specific to your needs.

  • Screenshots in cover flow of Safari history are empty. Why? Who knows?

Screenshots in cover flow of Safari history are empty. Whereas all history is visible. Why? Who knows?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari - History bookmark not showing - cannot use cover flow

How can I get the Cover Flow to work in History.  It did work but since the upgrade I can only get the History list not the Cover.

Ah... that'll be it then, they are 512 x 512. well i guess that bugs been hanging around for quite some time now, anyone got any ideas if anyone's trying to fix it? i guess making 128 x 128 icons wouldn't be the end of the world but it does seem like a step backwards.
one thing that still confuses me... an icon file contains icons of all sizes, why does cover flow not select the right size icon to display?
thanks for that info V.K., much obliged.
    regards, Pablo.

  • Cover Flow in Safari

My Safari appears to be working well with the exception of Top Sites and Cover Flow, though the latter works fine in iTunes.
I'm not too worried about Top Sites, but I like the option of viewing my browsing history in Cover Flow.
I've tried binning Safari prefs etc, and also downloaded a fresh copy of Safari 4.0.4, but no success.
Any constructive suggestions would be most welcome.

    Hi,
Try Safari maintenance for TopSites and see if that helps.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
If Safari unexpectedly quits, it could be a 3rd party plugins causing the problem. Go to ~/Library/Internet Plugins. Move any 3rd party plugins to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Also, if you are running Safari in 64 bit mode, try running in 32-bit mode instead. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Quit Safari then relaunch.
While you have the Get Info window open for Safari, make sure it's not running in Rosetta.
Try using Open DNS - Free / Basic

  • Cover flow in Safari 4.0.3

I'm running Safari 4.0.3 in Snow Leopard without too much trouble. I like cover flow (though I know it's mostly cosmetic) but many of my bookmarked sites won't show even after directly visiting them. Cover flow just displays a blank, though other sites show up as intended. Is there any way to get Safari to fill in all the blanks automatically?
    Thanks.

  • Where does Safari save pix it uses for Cover Flow?

I am scrolling through Cover Flow in Safari 4.0 and I wanted to know where it saves the pictures I see in the previews. Is it saved in a Jpeg somewhere that I can access and view or some other format that I can't?
    Thanks.

.DS_Store files only track where thing are positioned on your system; they aren't caching anything.
I would have said that too, since as far as I know Finder doesn't keep any thumbnail caches. But the fact is that the first time you open a folder full of images without built-in thumbnails in icon view it takes a noticeable amount of time for Finder to draw them, but in subsequent openings they do indeed seem to appear as quickly as if they did have thumbs. I did a bit of experimenting and deleted the .DS_Store file in such a folder, and Finder did have to redraw the thumbs when I opened the folder later, and recreated the .DS_Store file. However, the file just isn't big enough to be a thumbnail cache. I would guess it does include some sort of instruction to the Finder about thumbs, but doubt it includes any actual thumbnails.
However, in my case this speediness does NOT persist through a restart.

  • Safari cover flow only displays bottom half of window

Help! The cover flow in safari only displays bottom half of the window, see the picture below,
However, those pages that can not be previewed show in full height of the window:
Any solution would be highly appreciated!!!

    Ok..
Maybe an extension or plugin issues...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. If you have any installed, turn that OFF, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If it's not an extensions issue, back to the menu bar click Safari > Preferences > Security.
Deselect: Enable plug ins. Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, then you have one or more Safari add ons causing this.
Follow the instructions for troubleshooting plugins here > Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
If it's not a plugin issue, go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .pilst file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.

  • Cover Flow - visual issues

I decided to rearrange my Bookmarks today and didn't even know Safari 4 had all these clever new additions! Cover Flow in Safari??? I use iTunes all the time as a visual guide and to have it here was a great idea.
My niggling problem is that around 90 percent of the visual images are just a black image with the grey Safari logo...
Are we supposed to create an image (as sometimes a 'cover' image has to be added in iTunes) for every new webite bookmarked?
    Nuts to that!
Any helpful people know why images aren't appearing? Is there an easy way to amend them? Am I just being thick... again?
A side issue using this for the first time - I noticed when I was re-arranging my bookmarks (dragging up or down) the process became slower and slower...

    all sorted!

  • Cover Flow Disappearing Act

I am using iTunes 10 for OSX 10.6.4. I have experiencing this since using some version of iTunes 9, I can't remember when it started. Cover Flow does not show up when I am in the main window of iTunes and viewing all music. If I switch to cover flow view, the song list simply starts to occupy the upper control bar (I wish I could post a screen cap, but thanks to Apple's posting board, that isn't possible). Its quite strange. The list is simply extended upward to the top of the window, obscuring any other controls above, though it is separated by a thicker line between where you would expect the list to begin. What's truly strange is that if I am not in the "all music" view and I am looking at a playlist, cover flow works fine. Its only in all music where it goes wrong.
What I am asking the experts who are reading this is whether I can just delete a Library settings file to reset all of iTunes view settings to fix this? I am desperate to fix this as seeing this list "upwardness" is frustrating me to no end. If anyone needs to actually have a picture of what I'm talking about I can e-mail it to you or whatever.
Thanks to all who take a look.

    HI John,
Keep in mind you only need to repair permissions after any software updates or upgrades.
As for cover flow, try Safari Maintenance

  • Cover Flow in iTunes Sluggish

I have a 2.0 GHz Centrino Duo processor with 2 GB in memory and nVidia GS video drives. But, cover flow in iTunes is sluggish. Is there any way to fix it? Is it Vista?

Sorry, but you cannot. Cover Flow is not available in iTunes 11.

  • No Cover Flow

When I select the cover flow option in iTunes, I'm getting a message that says iTunes cannot browse cover flow on this computer. I'm running Windows XP. Any suggestions?

Tell us the make and model of your computer and whether or not it comes with XP (Service Pack 2) or Vista (the most recent Windows operating system.).
iTunes is telling you that it can't find, or you're missing, a necessary part of the your graphics software.
It could be disabled or it could be so out of date that the recent iTunes install can't use it.
So hit the Start button, click on Run, and when the box opens type in dxdiag and click on OK
In the initial window, read the whole thing, it will tell you what DX install you have.
DX 9.0c if XP, DX 10 if Vista is what you want to see.
Click on Display, the tab at the top of the Window.
    It will show what's enabled.
Write down the information from both windows, what os, what DX, what is enabled in display and post it back here so we can see.
