Cannot add cluster disk on windows 2012

I have 2 servers connected to a shared storage array using Fibre Channel.  Currently there are 2 luns on the storage device.
From the Failover Cluster Manager, when I select “Add Disk” from Storage – Disks, both luns show up and I can add them without problems.  But if I choose to only
add one of them first (it doesn't make a difference which one is added first), then it will not allow adding the second one later.  I get a message: "No disks suitable for cluster disks were found. For diagnostic information about disks available to the
cluster, use Validate a Configuration Wizard to run Storage tests."
When I do add one (or both disks at the same time), they work just fine for failover clustering.
I can’t imagine this is by design. Is this a known/unknown issue, or is there something special that needs to be done?
Thanks

Ok, no problem. I run the validation tests (Validate Cluster - Storage only) and I received the details shown below. I can clearly see that Cluster Validation tool does not find any disk suitable for 2012 cluster, and even I can see why (it is plain English).
Unfortunately this still does not explain how to fix the problem. Recommendations like "run Clear-ClusterDiskReservation PowerShell cmdlet to remove the Persistent Reservation from the disk" do not work - this discussion is available in another thread where
people having the same issue and no luck so far. I guess that I'm using old SAN (and I know that) that simply does not support SCSI-3 persistent reservation so those disks cannot be used in 2012 cluster. Oh well, will have to wait fro new SAN and then I can
play again...

No disks were found on which to perform cluster validation tests. To correct this, review the following possible causes:
* The disks are already clustered and currently Online in the cluster. When testing a working cluster, ensure that the disks that you want to test are Offline in the cluster.
* The disks are unsuitable for clustering. Boot volumes, system volumes, disks used for paging or dump files, etc., are examples of disks unsuitable for clustering.
* Review the "List Disks" test. Ensure that the disks you want to test are unmasked, that is, your masking or zoning does not prevent access to the disks. If the disks seem to be unmasked or zoned correctly but could not be tested, try restarting the servers
before running the validation tests again.
* The cluster does not use shared storage. A cluster must use a hardware solution based either on shared storage or on replication between nodes. If your solution is based on replication between nodes, you do not need to rerun Storage tests. Instead, work
with the provider of your replication solution to ensure that replicated copies of the cluster configuration database can be maintained across the nodes.
* The disks are Online in the cluster and are in maintenance mode. No disks were found on which to perform cluster validation tests.

  • Cannot see cluster disk resources after updating Windows base MP

Hello - we've recently updated the Windows base MP for SCOM 2007 R2.  Once we did that we lost monitoring of our clustered disk resources.  They're discovered but not monitored any more.  Can someone please help!!! TIA
    Mike Zamborini

    Hi,
From the "Windows Server Operating System Management Pack Guide.docx" - page 42
Known Issue: Cluster Disks Managed by Third-Party Software are Not Monitored
Issue: If the Cluster disks are managed by third party software, and they change the resource type to anything other than “Physical Disk”, these disks will be discovered but we do not provide monitoring for these.
Workaround: There is no workaround currently available. In future, we will be removing discovery for these too.

  • Disks not avialable and cannot add new disks to existing pools

I have a few disks that are RAW and I want to add them to existing pools.  However, only 1 disk shows up as a Primordial disk and the others do not.   I cannot add these drives to a new volume and when I try to add any drive to an existing
pool, the add disk option is greyed out.  I have search everywhere to resolve this but no luck.
What is interesting is one of the drives that shows available for a volume is the drive I have associated to backing up the OS on the server itself and is initialized, i.e. not RAW.

    Hi,
Please try to run the following commands in PowerShell to obtain the information about disks:
    Get-physicaldisk
    Get-disk
In additional, the physical disk added to a storage pool must be 4GB or larger. If the space is less 4GB, the disk will not appear in the storage pool window.

  • File Share Cluster Transfer Issues - Windows 2012 R2 - Two Nodes

    Hi There,
I am having some issues in creating a simple file share on a 2 node cluster.
Each "File Server" is Windows 2012 R2 Standard.
Each server has 4 Nic Ports, 2 are configured as a Control Team and the other 2 as a Media Team.  The media team is specifically for any storage and file sharing traffic, the control team is purely for access to the server via RDC.
The storage is from a NetApp SAN connected via SAS cables to the 2 "File Servers" and transfer speeds to and from that are good (1GB/s)
I have looked at different step-by-steps to get this working, they all are similar to: https://robertsmit.wordpress.com/2012/06/26/clustering-fileserver-on-windows-2012-step-by-step/
The share permissions are configured with Everyone with Full Control.
Once the file shares are all set up, I can browse the shares and any current folders and files.
I can download any files that exist on these shares...
The issue is when I try to put a file on the share from a "client" server (win 2008 r2) or even from the other node (connecting to the file share location as I would on another machine)
I just get the copying dialogue attached, which sits there for about 3-4 minutes and then just finishes with a Network Error.
This only occurs during an upload of a file to the share.
All servers can ping each other, there are no cluster event errors..
Can anyone help, I need to get this fixed ASAP.
If you need more info then please ask.
    Thanks,
    -Tim

    Hi Tim,
Did you run the cluster validation before you create this cluster? Please disable any firewall or AV soft and install the recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server

  • Hyper-v cannot boot Gen2 guest from Windows 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1 x64 ISO - file format not supported, Gen1 works fine

I am new to Gen2 Hyper-V and so far I simply can't use it, because I am unable to install any (supported) guest OS from an ISO ...
So far I tried that on:
    1. my HP Z230/i4770 workstation (Secure Boot disabled) host running Windows 8.1 Pro x64 (with Hyper-V feature enabled), can't boot any VM with supported OS ISO.
    2. my home desktop/i3770K (secure Boot enabled) host running Windows 8.1 Pro x64, same result, error during VM boot from ISO, quoted below.
Synthetic SCSI controller (instance blah blah) Failed to Power on with Error 'The version does not support this version of file format'
Gen1 guests of course work perfectly fine with those ISOs, because emulated DVD IDE picks up the official Enterprise Evaluation ISO of either Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise, perfectly fine and all works OK in Legacy boot mode.
When I create a new guest and select Gen2, then no matter if I check or uncheck the Secure Boot in virtual Boot Order options for the guest (while setting the SCSI DVD at top of course), it simply doesn't work, always same error. I tried first connecting
to VM to see if it prompts for key press, but it doesn't, the error is instant on Power on when (supported) ISO image is selected to be booted.
I verified that both of official Enterprise Evaluation ISO's of either WS2012r2 and W8.1x64 are bootable in both the UEFI mode (Secure Boot enabled) and Legacy BIOS mode using a physical computer.
    What am I missing here???

FYI, above is wrong! it's not about linking ISO to virtual DVD or selecting "Install OS later", it's all about the location of the ISO file and share permissions on parent folder!
I was actually suspecting several issues, but haven't had time to test it, was thinking about issues like assigning (or not) some of initial settings during Gen2 VM creation, e.g.:
-Network connection through virtual switch or Not Connected (make no different if assigned or not)
-Memory above 4096MB (makes no difference if < or > 4096MB)
-ISO file location (makes huge difference!)
The ISO file CANNOT be placed on network share OR in shared folder on same local drive as the VHDX file (works fine if parent folder is not shared).
I can now replicate the issue easily every time and it always fails with file format unsupported message whenever I have the ISO file located either on remote network share, or (fails the same way too) when I have the ISO file placed locally (on host drive)
when simply a parent folder is shared... must be some permissions issue... and a pretty dumb one considering that in production environments nearly everything is placed on remote file servers ...
... so the moral of the story is, if you want to install Gen2 VM in win8/2012 hyper-V then you must copy the ISO file to Hyper-V host drive AND make sure the parent folder is not shared. works every time now! :)

AA8 is not certified for Win7 and I have never heard of anyone successful on getting AA8 to work on Win7, 64-bit. Several have been successful on the 32-bit version. Potential problems can still be expected. To be successful, it is best to update to the latest AA8 version.

  • Can I migrate physical hard disks in storage space from Windows 2012 R2 to Windows 2012?

    Hi,
We have a Windows 2012 R2 server.  It's running storage space with 10 hard disk in Parity mode.  We would like to move the hard disks from Windows 2012 R2 server to Windows 2012, so that we can "free" our windows
2012 R2 server to do something else.   Can we just unplug the hard disks in Windows 2012 R2 and hook it to Windows 2012 server without any data lose?  If we can do it, what's best "formal" procedures to do it?
    Thanks,
    Tak

    Hi Tak,
Storage space will be recognized in different servers (and even clients) which support.
If it is just a "Parity mode", you can turn off the computer, unplug and connect these disks to the new server directly.
If any Windows Server 2012 R2 new feature is involved, it may not work in Windows Server 2012 but it should not damage your data and you can still connect these hard disks back to original server.
However, backup important files is always recommended.

Microsoft does not support this on operating systems that are not listed on this page for Lync 2010.   Windows Server 2012 (and R2) are not listed as supported.
There are several new features in Server2012 that are not used in Lync 2010.  I would not install 4 year old enterprise software on a platform such as Server 2012 R2.   There are enough hoops to jump through with Lync 2013.

You really are very helpful. All this is taking your time up so sorry
I followed your instructions to the letter and everything came up ok as far as the bit when I reached the 'admin' PW
then I kept getting a pink error page and couldnt go any further. Im sorry to be such a pain.
It seems it is requesting a user name which I ignored but once I add 'admin' it blocks me.
Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then, try to adjust the browser settings...Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...
Now,go to start>>>run and in the run box type http: "//192.168.1.1" without quote and hit enter. Now,it will prompt you for username and the password.Leave the username blank and type admin in the password.

Failed while verifying removal of any Persistent Reservation on physical disk 19ba99a4 at node RC-HYPERV-3.riddlesdown.local.
When I look in validation report, disk 19ba99a4 is the management LUN (Access LUN 31 as termed by the storage software).
Looking on my 2008 R2 cluster this doesn't appear in Disk Management.
Any ideas how I can get rid of it or the error that it is causing?

  • Windows 2012 cluster, CLIUSR cannot be created, password does not meet security requirements

Trying to create a Windows 2012 cluster (Not R2). The cluster creation wizard goes through without problems. However, after a few minutes the cluster service dies with EventID 1556 and error code 2245 "The
password does not meet the password policy requirements. Check the minimum password length, password complexity and password history requirements." The error repeats every few minutes.
Looking at the cluster log, we find:
ERR   Workitem(Sweeper::Sweep)  callback threw exception: (2245)' because of '[CLI] Account Creation failure: 2245, 4294967295'
ERR   [CORE] Shutting down cluster service because of unhandled exception in a worker thread
It appears it is trying to create the local CLIUSR account, but the self-generated password does not meet complexity... The local password policy is the default deployed with Windows 2012 -
No unusual password requirement (8 characters with built-in complexity requirement)
I saw Elden's description of CLIUSR in
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/95929983-a50c-42b3-a520-6a171e542948/win-server-2012-two-node-cluster-local-cliuser-issue?forum=winserverClustering - so I believe I understand what it is doing, but how can it not generate a password complex
enough? And I do not see any report of anyone having this issue, so I suspect a local configuration / issue.

    Hi FrankJB,
Please verify that the Cluster Service account has the appropriate user rights on each node of the cluster. The Cluster Service account must be
in the local administrators group and should have the rights listed below. These rights are given to the Cluster Service account during the
configuration of the Cluster node. It is possible that a higher level policy is over-writing the local policy or that an upgrade from a previous
operating system does not add all of the required rights.
If you can confirm your current account meet the cluster create conditions, please disable all your firewall then run the cluster validation and
post the warning and error information.
