Cannot add files to library

When I try to add a file to the iTunes library from the File menu, it closes without warning. When I go to Add Folder to Library, the "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" message comes up. I have uninstalled it and installed it again, but that didn't work.
I would appreciate any help.

btw, I've added files to my library several times before and not had this problem.

  • IBooks stays blank - cannot add files to library

My iBooks library is simply blank. I cannot see the files I 'added' to the library. I cannot see the files it supposibly imported from my iTunes (which now no longer has a 'Books' section.
Even tho i can open pdf's on my iPhone 5 just fine, none of those files can be seen anywhere in iBooks on my Macbook Air (Maverick), even tho iCloud i enabled and works fine in all other apps.
When i try to add files to my library it asks me if i want to replace the files they match that are already in it (again, these files cannot be seen), but it makes no difference whether i tell it yes-replace or no-cancel at that point: my iBooks stays blank.
I cannot uninstall iBooks because it says it is required by OS X.
When i open the app, view its info or try to delete it my whole laptop laggs.
Someone please please help. I haven't been this frustrated with a computer since i was still using pc's

  • Cannot Add File to Library in iTunes version 7

    (prenote: I have completed the 5 R's)
I do not seem to be able to add a file to the iPod with the Add File function like I used to in version 6 of iTunes. I now have to Import File for the podcasts and mp3's which I would like to add. Then, when these are imported to my library, the iPod begins having difficulty being recognized by iTunes.
Is there an update coming for v. 7 ??

    no response from any one.

  • Updated itunes to 10.4.1.10 on Windows XP. Now cannot add files or album covers. please help

Installed latest version of itunes when prompted yesterday. Using hp compaq laptop running Windows XP. Now cannot add files to library or add albulm covers. Tried to play new mp3s from external drive, that I was trying to add. got message saying "Itunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error7 (windows error 1455)"
Have also had a couple of  "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" forced shutdowns. Cannot find files to reinstall and itunes is telling me I am using the current version.
Infuriating!!! Can you help me please?

Asking me what I think is not what really matters here. What do you think? Do you want to wait for another update to iTunes in order to sync or backup your iPad again? That could be weeks down the road - no telling when it may be updated.
Why dont you go through this support article and see if any of this stuff helps you? The article is for Windows users.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Here is something very simple to try. Quit iTunes and restart your computer. Then restart your iPad and try to sync/connect again.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • I recently updated to itunes 10.4 and now i cannot add files to my library. Will there be another update to fix this issue, because on google others are experiencing the same problem.

Eversince the latest itunes update i cannot add files to my itunes library.

Just to be clear - I just bought a new song and can't download it into the library because of this error message.

  • An mp3 file on my computer will not import to itunes by either the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method.  Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.  My OS is Windows 7.

I purchased an mp3 from a private website on my laptop.  The itunes library i sync ipod to is on my desktop, so i copied the mp3 onto a flash drive and then into my desktop in the Downloads folder and Desktop folder as well as the itunes music folder, 3 places.  I opened itunes on the desktop and read the instructions for importing music that's already in my computer.  Neither the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method works.  I've tried both ways over and over.  Cannot figure out what the problem is.  I do note that the name of the mp3 file doesn't show the .mp3 extension, it appears as simply it's title, Eating Healthy, without any extension at all.  Could the filename be the problem, or do you have any other idea what I'm doing wrong?  My OS is Windows 7, using IE9.  Thanks.
ADDENDUM AFTER READING ANOTHER DISCUSSION HERE:  I have now tried right clicking the song in Windows Explorer and choosing Open With, clicking itunes.  The mp3 plays in itunes but does not add to the library.

I don't have a Recently Added playlist.  However, I discovered that the file I had named Eating Healthy was given the name You Can Enjoy Eating Healthy when it copied to iTunes.  I'm guessing iTunes pulled the full name of the piece from the internet.  Upshot--the mp3 did transfer to iTunes on all 3 tries, but I was looking in my alphabetized list under E, not Y, so I didn't see it there.  Thanks for your help.

  • "File / Add File To Library" Not Working For Particular File

I believe I chose to delete a podcast. iTunes asked if I wanted to totally delete the file, or to leave it in a 'media file'. I didn't know what this meant so I chose to just leave it in a 'media file'. As expected, the podcast could no longer be seen in the iTunes Library / podcasts.
Later I performed: "File / Add File To Library" of that same podcast (ie. an .mp3 file). The file does not seem to be anywhere in the Library. I'm wondering if it is not added because it thinks it is in some "media file" which cannot be seen within iTunes? No error message was given saying the file was already there; however, when i attempt to add other podcasts from the same directory on my computer, iTunes has no problem adding other podcasts.
I've changed the directory to a different location on my harddrive, as well as changed the name of the podcast all to no avail. And spent 4 hours with this and am ready to pull my hair out.
I think iTunes will not add this file because it thinks it is already there, although from no where in iTunes can i find it (ie. not under 'music', not under 'podcast', etc.).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

"Won't add to library and doesn't give an error message" is usually a sign of minor corruption in the MP3 file. Treat it with a 3rd party tag cleanup program such as MP3val, and then it should be able to be added to your iTunes library.

  • Cannot add files to itunes after 10.0.1 update

After downloading and installing itunes 10.0.1 update, I cannot add files to my library. Anybody else have this issue? I have tried dragging/dropping files and file->add new files to library. I'm using a PC with windows xp

Same issue, on an OS X machine.

  • Add File to Library issue

I have downloaded an 82mb mp3 file from another service. When I choose File, Add file to Library, I select the file and click open. There is a pause and then the add file dialogue box disappears as if it has successfully finished. However my file does not show up in my library. I have downloaded other files from this other service and done this with no problem. This file will play in Musicmatch but I cannot get into iTunes. Please help.

It looks like an Applescript error message to me.
My knowledge about that is far too limited to give you a clue.
You could post it in the Applescript forum to know what it means.
Or ask in the Applescript for iTunes forum at iLounge or send a mail to the other Doug (links are on this page at 'Drop me a line')

  • 11.2.1 won't add files to library

When I updated to 11.2.1, I found that I can no longer add files to my iTunes. I'm trying to add mp3 files by double-clicking on them, right-clicking and "opening with iTunes" using the "Add to library" function off the file menu...to no avail. Sometimes, I'll see the status window showing that files are being added, but I cannot find them in my library. Repeated searches of all kinds of failed. While it implies that they are being added, I do not see them.
So, in essence, I can play songs that are currently in my library, but not add anything new. This ***** because I just bought a bunch of stuff and can't listen to it, nor get it on my iPhone.
Not sure what to do to solve this. I've of course restarted my computer several times and that makes no difference so far.
    Please help.

    Hello there, LoveSavesLives.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great guidelines in regards to importing content to iTunes:
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
    Particularly:
Adding content on your computer to iTunes
iTunes helps you add digital audio and video files on your computer directly to your iTunes library. You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats. You can also add video content in QuickTime or MPEG-4 format to iTunes. To learn how to add these files to iTunes follow the steps below.
    Open iTunes
From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
    MacAdd to Library
    Windows
    Add File to Library
    Add Folder to Library
Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add
If iTunes is set to "Copy files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library," iTunes will copy all content that is added to the iTunes library to the iTunes Music folder. To adjust this setting or change the location of this folder, go to the Advanced tab in iTunes Preferences.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Cannot Add MP4 to Library

I cannot add any mp4 files to iTunes, I have tried dragging and "Add file to library" but nothing happens, it does not appear in the library, any help much appreciated.

    iTunes 7.5
    Vista build 6.00.6000

this is just a suggestion. If you reinstall itunes again, make sure you follow the directions in the support section of this site for uninstalling itunes and quicktime. Another thing they don't say in that article that I did when i had to uninstall itunes was to do a search. You know, pressing the start button and then "Search". Make sure when you do, click the search "All files and folders". Then set it to look in "Local Hard Drives (C:)" and type in the "all or part of the file name" itunes. After the search is done you should have a bunch of different itunes components in the results. Btw do the same for quicktime as a search. Make sure to DELETE every itunes and quicktime file there. If some of your music files happened to come up in the search use commone sense. Get rid of every component so itunes and quicktime is completely erased from the system. Make sure that you do this after you've restarted your computer once (according to the uninstallation article). Then just empty your recycle bin, reboot your computer, and finally reinstall itunes. Hopefully that will work to at least get rid of that APP error. Good luck and ask me anything you have some questions!!

I loaded iTunes on a new laptop. I copied and pasted my albums to a 4G stick and down loaded them to the new laptop. Placing them in, Libraries – Music – iTunes and than in Itunes used File – add file to library. So far so good. For what ever reason one of the CDs would not load onto the stick. I got the orginal CD and loaded directly to Itunes. Now when I look in  Libraries – Music – iTunes it’s not there but it is in and plays in iTunes. What should I have done or should I be doing? Thanks.

It's not a unique situation - happens all the time, smaller hard drives getting filled up.
It's also easy to fix. I just moved my itunes content to a bigger hard drive.
First I made a backup of the itunes database file - iTunes Library.itl. Just in case anything went wrong.
Nothing did go wrong, but I'd have it in case anything DID go wrong. That file holds ratings, playcounts, Date Added, and other metadata.
Second, in itunes change the preferences > advanced tab to tell itunes to put everything on G:
Set the itunes folder location to something like G:Media or G:iTunes
This will affect all FUTURE additions to itunes and not do anything to the existing locations.
Make sure the checkbox for "Keep itunes organized" is NOT checked. I also left the "Copy files when adding" unchecked.
Third, to move all the files to G: without itunes losing the paths, run the File > Library > Organize > Consolidate command. This will need to run a while, so be patient as it copies all the files to the new G: location. This does NOT delete the originals. You will have to do that.
Fourth, make sure everything in itunes is OK and you can play stuff in your library. If you're really cautious you can run a script to check for missing/dead tracks.
