Cannot add HP Deskjet 3820 printer

We have been using an HP Deskjet 3820 printer with an iMac forever with no problems. The printer is connected from the printer parallel port to the USB port on the computer using an adapter cable. Last time we tried to print the print job stopped in the middle of printing. Occasionally this would happen in the past but if I deleted the printer and then added it back everything was fine. Now, though, when I try to add the printer under the USB heading, I get a question mark, the printer name, and "driver not installed". I have tried reinstalling the software that came with the printer, and downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my system software - all with no change. HP is really no help except to tell me that a talk with a tech will cost me $30 or I can buy a new printer. The weird thing is that I can print a test page, so there is some communication between the computer and printer, but I can't actually install it to print from within an application.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try:
Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
Delete Print Prefs - search for files that start with com.apple.print (File>Find) and delete them.
Restart the Mac. Try adding in Print Center again.

  • Cannot add HP deskjet F4180 on OS X Mavericks

My Mavericks is updated, but I cannot print any longer on my HP deskjet F4180. I cannot add the printer in the system & preference menu (the menu is empty, except for Adobe PDF 8.0). Please help, I need to print - that is why I have a HP printer after all.

    Hello Jeroenishetbeu,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are trying to install your HP Deskjet F4180 to your Mac running the new Mavericks 10.9 Operating system. The reason you are running into some issues, is because there was no full feature software and drivers made available for the older model Deskjet. With that being said it does not mean you cannot use the printer, it just means there may now be a different way to do things.
To get a better understanding take a look here: OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac, here you will be walked through adding the printer using the Apple Updates.
Scanning will be a little different as well: How to Scan: OS X v10.9
I hope this helps, be sure to check out the FAQ's in the first recommendation.
    Thanks,

  • I would like to add my Deskjet F4480 printer to my home wireless network. How can this done?

I have a Linksys wireless router that is the hub of my home wireless network.  I have been successful in adding a HP OfficeJet 6500 All-in-one Printer an old HP DeskJet 890C that I purchased in 1997 with a computer running Windows 95.  The HP 890C has been my tireless workhorse throughout my two kids K-12 school as well as printing reams of paper during my MBA...and guess what: it still works.  However, my daughter has just returned home from college and she has a HP DeskJet F4480 printer/scanner that she would like to add it to the home network.  I have been researching the problem, but haven't been successful in finding out if this printer is compatible to add to a wireless network.  Or simply, will a 802.11g Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter suffice?  I am also adding a new Windows 7 laptop in the network, that will need to print to this F4480.  I patiently await the forum's response.

My mistake, it seems that price was a deciding factor when I purchased the F4480 in lieu of a more expensive wireless ready printer-scanner.  I will eventually come-up with a solution as I did with the 890C where I have a wireless print server connected directly to the printer serial connection.  It seems that backward compatible is still evident, but I am having some problems coming up with the long-lasting HP49 and HP23 tri-color ink packs.
Here is the rub; I don't replace technology because it is out-dated. I upgrade and or repair everything myself. I found warranties not worth the paper their written on and in most cases, the technical support was lacking.  My Win95 desktop went thru several major components until I found that it was becoming harder to find software to run with it.  I finally replaced it in 2007.  Now it seems that there has been a paradigm shift toward utilities that are very hungry for memory, and even if I didn't want to, I am forced to come over to the dark side with a device that has a minimum of 8GB of RAM.

  • Cannot add a Canon Network printer to iMac (Intel) OS 10.8.3

I have never been able to connect this mac to the networked printer(Canon ImageRunner Advanced C5045).  The printer is detected as a printer nearby connecting through bonjour, but it won't print with the updated drivers, it wont print with generic drivers.  I've added it by IP address, by advanced settings with IP address, When I use the canon drivers, it gives me a driver error -50.  When I use the generic drivers it says its connecting and says it sent the prints, but nothing comes out of the printer.  I'm kind of at a loss.  Any suggestions?  Please?

been sitting here non stop for two days trying to make it work.
    Under Adding it by default:
Ive used the canon driver UFR II (both US and UK) 2.43 which is supposed to work with 10.8. This leads to an error "Cannot communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again, then start Printer Utility to get the printer information." Ive used the generic PostScript printer driver and the generic PCL printer driver.  These say they have printed - but nothing comes out of the printer.
    Under adding it by IP
Ive used IPP with canon drivers/generic drivers (canon drivers error -50 - generic drivers say they have printed but nothing comes out)   Ive used Jet Direct with canon/generic drivers (no results) Ive used LPD with canon/generic drivers (no results)
    Under adding it by windows
I've found what I believe to be the printer, but it asks me to log into the printer with a user name and password - I dont have either and didnt need any such thing to set it up on the windows machine right next to it.
    Under adding it by advanced
under canon CUPS BDL - got error -50
under canon CUPS Uni-direct IP - got error -50
under canon CUPS Uni-direct USB - got error 50 and Printer is not responding.Check the printer power and connection, and then try sending printing job again.
under canon UFR - got error 50
under IPP - got couldnt connect would you like to continue - yes - says printed - no results
under IPP (http) got error -50
under IPP (https) - got error 50
under IPP (ipps) got error 50
under Jet direct - got no results
under LPD/LPR - got no results
under windows with spoolss - got log into printer with user name and password - followed by error -50

  • Error 9672 when trying to "re-add" HP Deskjet 3900 printer

Hi, I've seen the discussion about the Error 9672. But the answers don't really help. I get the same errormessage when trying to re-add the HP 3900 deskjet printer that I had to delete because it was not working properly. Now I just can't add it again... I can find it as an available Bonjour printer. But what can I do next? I haven't really been able to find out if this is a commonly known Apple bug, or if it is a bug that HP should be working to fix. Can anyone help? The printer works fine when connected directly via USB by the way.
    iBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I found the same thing out yesterday and did the same solution.
One issue should be noted. The quality of the print is much worse since we are not using the correct print driver. Works fine for standard unimportant text printing, but really can't be used for printing photos.
Connect the printer directly to the computer USB and print a photograph using the real print driver, then connect wirelessly using the above method and print the same photo. The difference is dramatic.
It also seems to overuse black ink when hooked up through the Airport, and the printer light blinks for a while after printing is done.
Anyway, I plan on leaving it hooked up wirelessly for convenience sake, but when good quality is needed I will attach it directly to the USB port.
You can verify my findings and let others know if you find the same thing I found.
Good luck, and lets hope there are more compatible printers available in the future.

  • Cannot add HP Deskjet 3940

Yesterday I bought an HP Deskjet 3940, which allegedly works until Tiger. The driver install seems to work fine. I then go to the Printer Setup utility and try to add the printer. It shows up on the list as 'Deskjet 3900', with the correct driver (Deskjet 3.0.1) but when I hit add there is a long wait and then the window shuts down without the printer being added to the list.
I've tried various fixes suggested by the HP guys (including deleting lots of files from the Printers and Preferences folders) and re-installing using the latest installer from their website, but nothing makes a difference.
Any suggestions before I take the printer back?

    Hi,
I've tried the changes you indicated (except for the
printer-repair-software which would cost nearly as
much as the printer ;)) with no success.
Interestingly however, while the printer doesn't get
added to the mac printers list, it is added to the
CUPS one (as seen on http://localhost:631). And in
fact this printer will even print a test page. So
its obviously not the hardware or driver issues.
HP makes excellent hardware. They can't make software to save their lives.
Unfortunately, I still can't use the printer as I
can't find a way of telling OS X to print to the
    CUPS queue. Argh!
Also, checking the system message logs
/var/log/messages we have these error messages:
    Jan 22 15:53:33 XXXXX 990904320: cupsd's bootstrap

    Setup Utility.app/Contents
/MacOS/Printer Setup Utility: cupsd mach_msg error
    (ipc/rcv) timed out
Don't know what these mean but perhaps the could be
    useful?
From the looks of it Printer Setup Utility is not detecting the printer, but you knew this already.
You could run Reset the Print System from Printer Setup Utility (I know you did it already. Try again.) and you could go to the Library/Printers folder and delete the HP folder. If you do that you'll have to reinstall the HP stuff. Get the latest and greatest (such as they are) drivers from HP's site at <http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&lc=en&product=445449&la ng=en&cc=us&os=219> and see what happens.
And, oh, make certain that the printer is turned on and is connected to the Mac when you run the install. Even if it looks as though it's connected, it might not be; unplug it, from both ends, and plug it in again. And make sure that it's really powered up; unplug the power, from both ends, and plug it back in, too. (if the printer has a power brick, and the power brick has a little cord which plugs into it, unplug and replug that, too.) It's amazing how many problems are cured by unplugging everything and replugging it. This is especially so when the devices seem to be plugged in and drawing power.

  • [SOLVED] I cannot add a local USB printer through cups

    Hi all.
I have a DCP-7065dn from Brother. It is a mono-laser/scanner combo. Using the instructions here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs … index.html and the repackaged drivers from the AUR I was able to get scanning and the scan button to work (plugged into laptop via usb). But I can't seem to add the device as a printer. when I visit the cups url [http://localhost:631] I go to Administration --> Add Printer. But there is nothing listed under Local Printers. Brother offers lpr and cupswrapper drivers as well ad ppds. They are deb and rpm packages but are also availible in the AUR. I have downloaded and installed these packages from the AUR but still cannot detect the printer. Am I missing something simple?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Printer communication error and cannot add a new printer

I was happily using my Epson Artisan 810 printer this morning, connected wirelessly to my iMac.  All of a sudden I cannot print, get "Communication Error".  Checked Epson's website, no luck there.  Re-checked my wireless settings on the printer itself and re-confirmed them, it will print test pages from the printer, but still not communicating with the iMac.  I thought that removing the printer and then adding it back in might help, but now I cannot add any printer at all.
I resorted to my MacBook Pro, and now have the same problem with this as well.
Any ideas please?  What else can I check.  My internet and so on are fine.  The printer itself shows the wireless icon and says the reception is excellent on the printout it produced.
    Thanks so much!
    L.

It would be unusual for only Bonjour to stop working in the printer. The more likely is that the printer is set to a different network subnet to that for your Mac or, as you mentioned, something like a firewall is blocking it.
The IP addressing is the most common cause. If there is a process to view or print the network settings for the Epson, then this will show what IP address range it has, which should be the same as your Mac. With the IP address, there will be four sets of numbers. For a typical home network, the first three sets are known as the IP subnet, while the last set is the network address. For example, a device with an IP address of 10.0.1.5, has an IP subnet of 10.0.1 and a network address of 5. For your Mac to 'see' the printer, both devices would need the same IP subnet, while having a different network address. So if you can check what IP address the Epson has, you may find it is using a different IP subnet to your Mac.

  • HP Deskjet 1000 Printer - J110a cannot print in color using WIndows 8

J110a cannot print in color using WIndows 8. The printer will only print in black and white even though it works fine on a PC with Windows 7. I installed the latest drivers from the HP web-site.

    Hey @KC1964,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that since installing your HP Deskjet 1000 Printer on your Windows 8 computer you have not been able to print in colour. Because you are able to print fine from a Windows 7 computer we know that this issue is not being caused by your printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. I'm thinking that your machine is  either experiencing a driver conflict or a setting issue within the Windows 8 computer. Please follow the steps below.
    Step 1: Check Settings:
Open your Start screen by selecting the Windows button on the bottom left hand corner of your computer screen or by selecting the Windows key on the bottom left of your keyboard, to the right of the Ctrl button
Once the Start screen opens type Devices and Printers
    Click on Devices and Printers
In the Devices and Printers folder right click on your HP Deskjet
    Select Printing Preferences
In the Preferences window select the Advanced button on the bottom right
Look for the Greyscale or Print Black Only and make sure they are disabled
If all settings are correct, yet the issue persists, please proceed to the next step.
    Step 2: Try Alternate Driver:
To confirm if this issue is specific to the Deskjet 1000 driver I am going to have you load an alternate driver on your machine.
Open your Start screen by selecting the Windows button on the bottom left hand corner of your computer screen or by selecting the Windows key on the bottom left of your keyboard, to the right of the Ctrl button
Once the Start screen opens type Devices and Printers
In the Devices and Printers folder right click on your Deskjet 1000 and left click on Printer Properties
Left click on the Advanced tab
    Left click on New Driver
When the New Driver window opens just hit 'next' until you see a list of Manufacturers on the left and a list of Printers on the right.
Select HP as the Manufacturer on the left
Select Deskjet 9800 as the printer on the right. If Deskjet 9800 doesn't appear than select 'Windows Update' on the bottom left and once the update completes you will be able to select Deskjet 9800.
After selecting Deskjet 9800 hit next to complete the New Driver Wizard
Under the Printer Properties window select 'Apply' but don't hit OK
    Select the General tab
Rename your printer back to HP Deskjet 1000
    Hit OK
Lastly, right click on your Deskjet 1000 one more time and left click on Printing Preferences
Left click on the Paper/Quality tab
Left click on the 'Normal' dropdown for Print Quality on the bottom right and change this to Fast Normal
    Click Apply and OK
Now that the new driver is added in, please test printing in colour again.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck!

  • Cannot add printer- get error message.  LaserJet 1200

I recently bought a dual powered MacBook. It was working perfectly, and finding my printer both attached by USB, and wirelessly. It shows up as Bonjour LaserJet 1200. Suddenly, it stopped working, and cannot be added to the printer list. I get an error message,"client error message too long", or some other nonsense. I have several other computers, running OS X, and none of them have any problem sharing the printer, which is connected to an Airport Extreme remote base station. I have tried everything, and come up with no success. So eventhough the printer is recognized, with its address, and is sharable, it suddenly and without cause, cannot be added to the printer list, and thus I cannot print. Any suggestions. Peter

  • Cannot add Epson stylus photo 1400 to printer list

    Hi,
I just unpacked my new printer, however I don't seem to be able to install it properly. I have tried both the the driver from the website as well as the one that came with it on CD. First, installing seems to go smoothly. Then I get to a screen telling me that before I can print I will have to add it to the printer list. The next screen gives me the printer list with the Epson Stylus's name on it. However, clicking on it I am not able to select the proper device name. It just doesn't appear on the list. (click here for a screenshot: http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/8601/bild15zy6.png ) Finally, the Epson driver installation app tells me that my printer "has not been added to the printer list" and that I should better go back and try again. "Running a printer check" actually makes it draw paper in but doesn't print anyhow.
Could someone help me with this?
    Thanks a lot.

I now managed to install my printer. To state my problem first, so people don't have to read the whole thread again:
My printer (this should be printer model independent) is connected directly via USB to my macbook. When I tried to add it to my printer list, I recieved the message "Error: -9672, An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer"
As I gathered from the forums, this points to missing rights during installation. In a lucky guess, I logged onto my computer not with my usual account but with the admin account and from there I could install it without any problems!
That is a bit strange as I should have been able to assign admin rights via entering the password from my usual account, but there you go. Strange are the ways of Apple (as with my most favourite mac problem/solution of all times: when you use the password reset feature from the install DVD, it uses an english keyboard layout, but in the standard log-in window it uses whatever the locale is set to, thus e.g. mixing z und y in German layout amongst others. This small misunderstanding cost me hours over christmas! Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone has similar trouble)
    I hope this helps,
    Otto
