Cannot add lyrics to AAC files on SMB share

A really odd behavior. I cannot add lyrics to AAC files living on an SMB-mounted share that holds all of my songs. It works for MP3s, but whenever I add lyrics and press OK, or use an automatic lyric finding script, the pasted lyrics disappear. I know that the share is not write protected, and neither are the songs in question. I have no trouble adding new songs to that same volume.
Any help or idea what to check for would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sortof figuring that but I can always hope - I just wish I could find some solid documentation that says yes/no... and I haven't been able to.....

  • Cannot add artwork to certain files

I am using the latest version of iTunes (7.3.2(6)) and I am having a frustrating problem. For certain music files, I am unable to add artwork. I am aware that some people were having this issue with AIFF files, but I am also having it with AAC files. For instance, I have one album consisting of 10 tracks, all of them AAC files at 192 kbps. I see the "Drag Artwork Here" message in the lower right corner of my screen, and when I drag an appropriately sized jpeg to the image, it seems to stay put. If I highlight another file, and then go back to the first one, the artwork that was there a minute ago has vanished. There doesn't seem to be any way to add artwork to these files.
I have had the same issue with other albums: can add artwork to some tracks and they stay just fine, and others disappear immediately after adding them. I did not have this problem with previous versions of iTunes.
Anyone else experiencing this issue with AAC files? Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I had the same problem. So I closed iTunes and located the files in the finder and it turned out some of the files I had ripped eons ago were .mpg instead of .mp3. I just changed the extension on these old files to .mp3 and the artwork I had pasted miraculously appeared the next time I opened iTunes. Not sure if just changing the extension is the best way to deal with this for all file types, but it worked for me.
PS I was also having problems with the files holding artist name changes - this also fixed that problem.

  • Cannot lock files on SMB share

I have a file copied to an SMB share. I would like to lock the file, preferably using applescript. Right now, though, I can't even lock the file by doing a command-I and checking the "locked" box - it checks, then clears itself.

I'm sortof figuring that but I can always hope - I just wish I could find some solid documentation that says yes/no... and I haven't been able to.....

  • ITunes freezes when adding music file from smb share

As title states, if I try to add more than 15/20 files to iTunes, it freezes and there's no turning back.
All my music is stored on my home-server (running Gentoo/Linux) and I have always used it with success until iTunes 10 came out.
The only thing I can do is to unmount the remote directory, open iTunes and remove the music.
I've already tried to upgrade to v10.0.1 but no luck so far.
    Any clue?
    Thank you

This has gotten to be a real problem for me as well. It freezes for about 40 seconds for each song I add. It even comes up as "not responding" at times in the force quit dialogue box. I rolled back to iTunes 9.2.1 as described here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2603684&tstart=0
Others have reported this fixing the problem, but it has NOT fixed it for me. I have my media on an SMB share and my library files were on the local hard drive. I tried moving the library files over to the SMB share, but it didn't improve anything.
I've been using "Activity Monitor" to look at what's going on and there's minimal CPU usage. But I am noticing something odd: the "Reads in" and "Writes out" figures are pretty much the same, which is what I would expect as I'm copying song files from my internal HD to the SMB share. But the "Data read" and "Data written" figures are very different. It's reading over twice as much data as it's writing. Either I'm misunderstanding what I'm looking at or something isn't right here. Anyone with more technical chops care to jump in?
I'd post a picture, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this.
I'm also wondering if there are corrupted plist files or other invisible files that can be deleted and rebuilt? I used "Filebuddy" to unhide the files and found a file in the iTunes folder called "sentinel". Anyone know what that is?

  • Copy file from SMB share to Desktop permissions

I have connected to a SMB share point (Windows Server)and copy a file to my desktop (Mac OS X 10.6.4).
The file on my desktop shows I have the read and write access, however, everyone has no access.
I could not get the system administrator to change on the server side. Is it possible to make any changes from my machine to make at lease every has read only access?
    Thanks in advance.

I downloaded D2KWUtil from the link suggested by you. It has very nice example demo form. But the documentation provided says following
Using D2KWUTIL in Web Deployed Applications
The use of this library is not supported with Web deployed applications.
In a web deployment scenario not all functions within D2KWUTIL will work. Any function that interacts with the User Interface (such as those in the WIN_API_DIALOG package) will fail.
Any interaction with the O/S by other functions will all be executed on the NT server and will act within, or return information pertinant to, the environment on that machine. For instance GET_COMPUTER_NAME will return the Server’s name, not the name of the computer that the Client browser is running on. Likewise COPY_FILE will copy files in the Forms Server not on the Client.
Functions such as those in WIN_API_BITOP will continue to work without change.
so this will not work in web deployed application.
    Any other suggestion?
    Thanks

  • Photoshop CS5 not actually saving files to SMB shares

Since upgrading to OS X 10.6.6 (and still in 10.6.7) Photoshop CS5 will not reliably save documents to SMB shares on my file server. When I "Save As" a new document, Photoshop goes through all the motions of saving the file. It seems to complete successfully. No error messages. The asterix in the documents title bar disappears as if the file saved. If you command-click on the document's title bar icon it will display the file path properly, as if the file was properly saved and exists. If, however, you go to the folder on the server where the document was supposedly saved using the Finder (or on a Windows machine in the Windows Explorer) the file does not exist. It was never actually saved.
This seems to happen mostly with larger files (over, say, 100MB in size) as oppsed to smaller files. If I change my connection to the server to AFP as opposed to SMB(CIFS) the file saves correctly without any problems.
Has anybody else ever encountered this problem? I have only noticed this issue since upgrading past OS X 10.6.5.
    Thanks!

This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Utility to block writing ._[files] to SMB shares over Ethernet?

I'm just tired of informing Windows users at the office that the files I've put on their machines are the ones without the "._" at the beginning of their filenames, and that they can safely trash anything beginning with "._"
I'm also sure I saw somewhere yesterday a utility (or was it a PrefPane?) that eliminates all resource files/"._" redundant files from being copied to smb shares. Can't remember what it was or where I bumped across it.
    Any pointers people?
    Many thanks.

I'm actually surprised that it worked - 'DSDontWriteNetworkStores' set to "true" is supposed to block the creation (though not the copying) of ".DS_Store" files that store "Finder" info such as window or icon positions, "Comments", etc. The "._files" are "AppleDouble" files which contain information from resource forks, file attributes and some other metadata - a different thing entirely that shouldn't be affected by the ' DSDontWriteNetworkStores' setting. I think there are a few third party utilities that can clean up "._AppleDouble" files (including the ones mentioned already), but I'm not sure if there is any way to prevent them from being created...
By the way, ...'write true' writes '<string>true</string>' whereas ...'write -bool true' writes '<true/>' to the ".plist" file. Some apps have been written to recognize a given key with either form but others seem to require one or the other. This is in contradiction to the 'man' page for 'defaults', which states:<pre> For the basic plist types (strings, data, ints, floats, booleans, and
dates) it is not necessary to precede the value with a type qualifier.</pre>

  • Cannot add TV commercial .mpg file to encoder - error while decompressing source

    Hello!
I'm attempting to add a .mpg file to the CS5 Media Encoder but receive the error "Error while decompressing the source file". This file was recorded and is being used as a TV commercial. Would this mean that the file has a different encoding/compression that makes it impossible for the Encoder to decompress? I'm stumped because It is a .mpg file, which should be accepted. I've attempted adding other .mpg files and have no trouble. Is there any way around this?
Thank you, in advance, for your help!

  • Cannot add a specific Indesign file to Review

A client sent me 9 InDesign files. I opened them all in CS5 and saved with new names.  Then I added them to a review online; however, one of the 9 won't let me add it. The button is grayed out in the CS Review panel. Any ideas why this would happen? It's a one page form with just text and one small logo that is not linked.

    Oh pity.
Adding a "source" file which is not really a source file and prefixing every line with comment characters is quite ugly way of doing it. In some ways Vivado does support adding text files to project (I adds upgrade logs and others); Could it be possible for users to create such files, too, in a future release of Vivado?

  • Error -36 while copying files to SMB shares but not AFP. (OSX Server APP)

    Hello,
So far my transition to OSX server has been a sloppy one. I have had so many problems. I have problems with permissions about everyday. Anyhoos, here is my latest problem. Everytime (from any client computer) a computer tries to copy a file or folder to a share using SMB protocol to the osx server i get this message:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “File or folder name" can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
This does NOT happen when copying the same files using AFP protocol. I using a windows box at work, (dialing in throught the VPN) it doesn't seem to have any problems dropping files either. Anyone know whats up? I have read on the site that others are experiencing problems with SMB within OSX servers. Some report that it stright doesn't work!!!!
Anyhoos, through all my problems, you guys have been VERY helpful to help me work through it. I really appreciate it!!

Just found a slight work around:
    http://www.macwindows.com/TIP--Workaround-to-Mavericks-file-sharing-is-to-force- SMB.html
Several readers offered a suggestion for yesterday's report of problems with OS X 10.9 Mavericks accessing some Windows file servers and network attached storage device. Mavericks now defaults to SMB2 file sharing protocol, but a bug seems prevent OS X from using SMB1 or AFP when the server doesn't support the newer SMB2.
A workaround is to force OS X to use the old SMB1 (also known as SMB/CIFS). To do that, instead of mounting the server using the Finder, use the Connect to Server command in the Finder's Go menu. Then type in the following:
cifs://server_address (using the IP address or network name of the server)
Using smb://server_address won't work, as this will use SMB2 to access the device.
Thanks to Mario Cajina and Kevin Lepard for the suggestion.

  • Files on SMB share vanishing from Finder

    Hi,
I got a brand new 13" Macbook Pro Retina running OS X Mavericks and I noticed some very odd behaviour when looking at folders on my fileserver containing solely JPGs.
It is kind of hard to explain, but I have made a video of it so you can see the effect for yourselves:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smjM7OzTOi0
Basically what happens is when I browse to the folder, all the files just start disappearing from the finder. Requesting info on the folder shows they're still there but I cannot see them anymore. If I mess around with the various view options for the folder for long enough they seem to reappear sometimes.
This is pretty bad. Anyone have an idea on how to fix this or what might cause it? The fileserver is a simple QNAP box that did not have this issue with the previous Macbook I had running 10.8 nor with any other device I own so I doubt the problem is on that end.
Any help would be greately appreciated.

    Hi,
same problem here. I upgraded my MacBook Pro Retina to 10.9 yesterday. Files are still there as you can see in a terminal window...

  • How can I add lyrics to media (mp3, wma, etc.) files?

Is there any possibility to add lyrics in media files (mp3, wma, etc.) in Windows 7? I didn't get it

For various reasons, that feature was intentionally removed from WMP12 for Win7.
Please, please note that tags can still be edited from within Windows Explorer; however, the 'lyrics' feature was removed there.
See zachd's responses in this thread:
WMP 12 - Where is the Advanced Tag Editor?
There, you'll see the reasons that ATE was removed from Media Player, as well as why 'lyrics' went away.

  • Trying to access SMB share, can read but not write, I use the domain account to autenticate and domain account has access to the share. its a samba domain and im a Windows Admin by trade.

    I have two  I Mac's Intel i7 models.
I have some problems getting them to write files to SMB shares.
The domain user account I use when requested to enter when i first try to connect to the share seems to go though without a problem and it presents me with a list of mounts (shares) I select one and the folder opens, I can read files and copy them but I cant write to any of the folders.
I have also mounted the network locatiosn to a folder from the terminal while also specifying a user name and password to use but this also doesnt allow the specified user account to write data to the share.
I have confirmed the user account can write to the share by having the user do so from a windows box.
any help from any of you mac guys would be great!!!!
Im a windows fan boy / Windows Server based Network Administrator and am slowly becomming a fan of your macs (mainly due to the Unix terminal access letting me realise there is more control to be had than most haters would lead you to believe).
    Peace Out

I should add that I originally formatted the problematic drive for FAT32 from the Mac, but then the WinXP computer couldn't see the drive when I plugged it in directly via USB. That's why I went with Seagate's utility to format it.

  • Updated itunes to 10.4.1.10 on Windows XP. Now cannot add files or album covers. please help

Installed latest version of itunes when prompted yesterday. Using hp compaq laptop running Windows XP. Now cannot add files to library or add albulm covers. Tried to play new mp3s from external drive, that I was trying to add. got message saying "Itunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error7 (windows error 1455)"
Have also had a couple of  "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" forced shutdowns. Cannot find files to reinstall and itunes is telling me I am using the current version.
Infuriating!!! Can you help me please?

Asking me what I think is not what really matters here. What do you think? Do you want to wait for another update to iTunes in order to sync or backup your iPad again? That could be weeks down the road - no telling when it may be updated.
Why dont you go through this support article and see if any of this stuff helps you? The article is for Windows users.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Here is something very simple to try. Quit iTunes and restart your computer. Then restart your iPad and try to sync/connect again.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
