Cannot Add Printer Attached to Time Capsule

I upgraded to Lion on my MacBook and have since not been able to print over the network using Time Capsule. I have a Canon MP520 attached to a 500GB dual band time capsule. I have cleared all the printers from system preferences to start fresh. Under Print and Scan in System Preferences, I click the '+' button to add a printer. Like you would expect, the Canon MP520 appears under nearby devices. When I select this option, a pop up explains that software for the printer is available from Apple. Each time I click 'download and install', I get a progress bar that searches for the software and an error that the software is unavailable and to check with the manufacturer. Cool.
I have downloaded and installed several versions of Canon Printer Utility and the firmware. Everything I can find. When I click '+' to add the printer, it does the same thing and I cannot figure out how to add my own firmware. Finally, I try to quickly set it up through Pages. I get to an "add printer" page that has default fax ip and windows options at the top. It displays my printer as a Bounjour device. It gives me the option to select which printer software to use. When I click on "select printer software..." it gives me a pop up window and no software is found.
This is really frustrating and like I said I have had no problems up until now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Stuart and welcome to the discussions.
Let's assume that the HP5550 is compatible with Time Capsule (TC). I'm not familiar with that particular model, but bear in mind that TC will not support scanning and other advanced features if you have an all in one type of model.

  • How to tell IP address of network printer attached to Time Capsule?

    Hi,
I just bought a 1TB Time Capsule today. I have a HP network printer and a Vista desktop attached to two of the Ethernet ports. In addition,I have an iMac and Macbook connected to the Time Capsule wirelessly. Everything is working fine except the printer. My Vista desktop can't find my printer. Is there anyway to find the IP address of the printer so that I can connect to it directly?
    Regards,
    Roderick

Am I correct in guessing that you have the Time Capsules WAN port connected to a router or modem?
If so who is giving out IP addresses (via DHCP)?
Usually there is a way to see what addresses have been assigned by asking the device making the assignment.
In my configuration it's no the TC but the router/modem and I can ask it to list the attached devices it has assigned IP addresses to.
I use the TC in bridge mode and haven't tried it as a DHCP server, but I suspect it will also show attached devices?
I assume also that the network printer worked fine in your previous network configuration?
So it might help to know a little more about what you have before the TC and how you changed it to include the TC.

  • No printer tab in time capsule

I am trying to add a printer to my Time Capsule.  It is not a wifi enabled printer, so I was thinking about just connecting it to my Time Capsule via USB and using the Time Capsule as my wifi sharing.
I don't see a tab in the Time Capsule for printing.  I seem to recall this existed at one time, but for some reason it is gone now.
I updated to Time capsule from 7.6 to 7.6.1, but still nothing there.
I have not found a simple solution as I was hoping on line.  Can anyone assist?

I'm not suggesting that you "downgrade" at all.  I am suggesting that you add the full feature version of AirPort Utility to your Mac.
Both AirPort Utility 5.6 and 6.0 were made available on the same day. You can keep both versions on your Mac and use the one that you want. You may have missed this information from Apple.
But, don't be fooled by the lower 5.6 number....5.6 does a lot more than 6.0
For reasons only known to Apple, AirPort Utility 6.0 is in fact a serious downgrade. We cannot answer for Apple on that.
Let us know if you decide to add AirPort Utility 5.6 and more functionality to your Mac. In case you were wondering, 6.0 cannot be easily be deleted....it is part of the Lion operating system.

  • Why can't I print wireless with Time Capsule anymore?

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 1280 that I have been printing wireless with for many years by plugging it in to the USB port on the back of the Time Capsule. Not anymore.
I have a MacBook Pro running the latest OS as well as the latest model Time Capsule running the latest software from Apple. I have tried using Airport Utility 5.6 which sees the printer plugged in. But when I try to add the printer to the Print & Scan system preferences, it shows up but says:
Software for this printer is available from Apple. Would you like to download and install it?
When I click "Download and Install" it searches for the software but then tells me:
The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer’s manufacturer for the latest software.
When I plug the printer directly into my MBP, I can add the printer and print without any problems.  Per Epson, I have the latest software for my printer, so I'm not sure why Apple needs to search for the software and download it in order for me to print using the Time Capsule.
Like I said before, this all use to work flawlessly. I'm assuming all the updates have "broken" something.
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

    Well, I solved my problem.
I deleted the EPSON folder in Library/Printers as well as Library/Cache and installed the EPSON driver via Softwar Update.
    Everything is working fine now.

  • Wireless Printer connection to Time Capsule

I have a Canon Pixma MP620 wireless printer that I'm trying to connect wirelessly to my Time Capsule. Is there a way to do this using the touch button method? Most access points have a button that can be pressed to receive a signal from another wireless device so they can sync but I haven't seen anything like that on my Time capsule

So you plugedd the printer into the time capsule usb right?
You need to re-add the printer in the system preferences one more time because the location has moved.

  • HP Laserjet 1020 Print Wirelessly Via Time Capsule?

Is it possible to set up an HP Laserjet 1020 to print wirelessly via time capsule? I already know I have to use the 1022 driver, and my printer works perfectly when the usb is plugged into my Macbook air. I plugged it into the new time capsule I just bought and added it on my Macbook as a network printer, but it wont print. Any tips or suggestions would be extremely helpful! Thanks in advance!

  • Printer seen from Time Capsule - print not adding to queue.

Been a while since I've been here... things have been doing well until now.
At our store in Minnesota, we've got 13 Macintoshes on display as well as a Time Capsule. All of them have been able to network to each other, as well as see our Epson CX7400 on the network. Every Mac has the appropriate driver installed, with the printer added successfully to each system.
However, when any given Mac attempts to print to the Time Capsule's Epson CX7400, which is networked via the Bonjour protocol, the print queue remains empty (as if nothing was ever sent to it), and the printer does not respond.
All I get is a quick blip on the screen showing that the document is being prepared for printing, sends it to the queue where it mysteriously disappears.
Not sure what is going on here. I've looked at as many things as I could. Might be something simple that I'm missing, I don't know.
I've reset the printing system, reinstalled drivers, checked the Bonjour and network settings on both the Time Capsule and each Macintosh to no avail.
    Any ideas?

Same exact problem here! Same printer... Time Capsule... Everything. And it just started happening about the same day as the first post. Someone help!

  • How to get the IP address of printer USB attached to Time Capsule?

I'm trying to work a printing problem with my HP7310 Officejet and VMware's Fusion 2.0.3. I'm on Mac OS 10.5.5.
One of the first diagnostic steps for Fusion is to ping the IP address printer. If I open the Print & Fax dialog from System Preferences I can see the name of my printer, let's say it's called "foo bar". I then open a bash terminal and type: ping "foo bar", but get an "unknown host" message.
I can ping the Time Capsule itself by getting the IP address from Airport Utility. The printer "foo bar" shows properly in the Airport Utility Printers dialog.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

If you open AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Advanced > Logs & Statistics > DHCP clients, a list of the devices will be displayed with their IP addresses. Make note of these.
You will have to get the IP for your printer by process of elimination. Go to
System Preferences > Network to see your ethernet and wireless connections and associated IPs. You should be able to narrow the list down to identify your printer.

  • Set up printer connected to Time Capsule via USB and print without WiFi

Is there any way to do this? We use a Time Capsule for daily backups, for both Mac and PCs, and have a printer that we would like to share between all of them. Before, we had the printer connected to a PC as this allowed both PCs and Macs to print to it, but of course the PC had to be on. For whatever reason, when we plugged the printer into a Mac, the PCs couldn't connect or print.
From what Apple has told me, I have two options:
    1. Share the printer via WAN, which is not desirable, as any other office could then print to our printer.
    2. Create a hidden, password-protected, wireless network. This causes problems for two reasons. Firstly, we are not permitted to "extend" the network, and by creating a wireless network and attaching it onto the ethernet network, we are basically doing that. Secondly, if we did create this wireless network, computers that connected to the network to be able to see the printer would then default to the wireless network for internet access, rather than the ethernet connection.
If I am misunderstanding something, or someone has an idea of how to password protect a printer connected to a Time Capsule without using wifi, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sharing via WAN through the Time Capsule, for whatever reason, is not password protected. Any computer in our building can see the printer, and use it. When we were sharing the printer through the PC / Bonjour, when setting up the printer on a new machine, a valid username and password from the connected PC was required.
I should add that the purpose of trying to share this via the Time Capsule, rather than the PC, is that the Time Capsule is always on, and we notice an increase in performance when the PCs are powered down regularly.

  • External HD attached to time capsule and apple TV

I just got a used apple TV 40GB and I have a 500 GB HD attached to my time capsule. Please anybody tell me how to "adapt" this external hard drive ( attached to my TC) to work with apple TV.... I guess there a way to store your itunes library to this hard drive AND sync it to apple TV because the HD is already attached to TC?....

AppleTv relies on iTunes to sync or stream media to it.
You can store media files on the Time Capsule attached HD, add them to your iTunes library (change Preferences so files are only referenced by iTunes), and then iTunes will make them available to AppleTV. Obviously anything synced will be on AppleTV at any time, but files for streaming will require iTunes to be running.
AppleTV cannot access the Time Capsuledrive or attached HD directly itself - iTunes does the donkey work and just gives AppleTv a list of files it can sync or stream.
While it would be more flexible to allow AppleTv to access network storage directly, it has not been designed to work that way, and is tightly integrated with iTunes.

  • Photo and Music storage on External HDD attached to Time Capsule

My MacBook is out of space, and like most people, it is full of music and photos.  I have a Time Capsule for backups but I also have a 1TB HDD attached to the USB of the Time Capsule.  I would love to make that HDD the source for all photos and music so any of my macs can use this source location.
In essence, I want to use the HDD attached to the Time Capsule to serve as the lone storage source for all my photos and music, and have any of my macs seek these files when iTunes or iPhoto is opened on any machine.
Can I do this?  If not, any ideas?  I am trying to avoid requiring a HDD plugged into my laptop all the time.  It kind of defeats the purpose of "laptop" in my mind.  I also switch computers frequently and want to use all the same source files.
    Thanks!!

In essence, I want to use the HDD attached to the Time Capsule to serve as the lone storage source for all my photos and music, and have any of my macs seek these files when iTunes or iPhoto is opened on any machine.
    Can I do this
Yes, but I guess I'm wondering how you will backup the important data on that drive attached to the Time Capsule. Time Machine cannot do this, so you would have to add yet another drive and manually backup the files or use another commercial application that can backup from a network drive to another network drive.
The better plan might be to add an external USB or FireWire drive attached to a Mac and move all the media there. Then, Time Machine will backup both the Mac and the attached hard drive.
The experts in the iPhoto forum strongly advise against moving your iPhoto library to the Time Capsule or another network drive attached to the USB port on the TIme Capsule.....especially if you are using wireless.  Any disruption when iPhoto is writing to the library can create corruption issues that will likely damage the entire library.
Suggest that you post over in the iPhoto support area to ask the same question. But, be prepared for a lecture if iPhoto guru Terence Devlin answers your post.

Instructions for moving the iTunes library are available in the link below. I've tried this and found that access to the files on the network drive is s-l-o-w.  Not the ideal solution by any means, unless you like waiting.  And, you'll still have to figure out how to backup these files.

  • TS2706 I cannot connect to my airport (time capsule) from a Windows PC

Any information on how to connect to an aiport extreme (really the time capsule) from a Windows platform. Have no problem from our Mac's but cannot connect from a windows based platform.  I haven't been able to find any recent posts to help with this problem.

First off, Archon23, what you want to achieve is possible.  I have access to both my Time Capsule (TC) and the USB drive connected to it, from a Win. 7 and Win. XP machine.
Here is what I see from the Windows side of things:
From My Computer - TC USB Drive (Y)
From Windows HomeNet - Time Capsule:
Now getting there is the trick.
One caveat before proceeding:  I am not well versed in Windows Networks, Windows Sharing and Firewall settings so some of the following may not be elegant, may not be absolutely required, and may not be the best way of getting there.  But it is what I did to see both the TC drive and it's attached USB  drive on the Windows side of my network..
1.) First, I added Airport Utility to the Inbound rules of Win 7 Firewall
While poking around my Network Sharing and Firewall settings trying to figure this out, I got a Pop-up recommending I do that.  AND I did that. Oh, and while you are at it, make sure you have a Home network established.
2.) Next, on a hunch, I installed a USB Wi-Fi Adapter (under $20) to my Win PC, enabled that Wi-Fi connection and disabled my Ethernet connection.  I was getting no where on this matter with my Ethernet connection to a DSL Gateway.  But with a Wi-Fi connection to my AirPort Express Base Station, I made progress.
3.) Finally, while poking around my Network Sharing Center some more, one by one I started the various network device Setup Wizards in there, and Trouble Shooters, to find the elusive TC/USB devices in question...AND voila, it worked.   And it's stable, been this way for going on two weeks now.
    Good luck.

  • Can't print wirelessly via time capsule on a windows 7 computer

I have an epson rx580 printer that when attached to my time capsule, I can print wirelessly with no problem on my Imac however I can't get my Sony / windows 7 laptop to print properly via the time capsule... I have installed bonjour on the laptop and setup the printer with bonjour however the printer will print about a half a page and stop and get stuck until I turn it off.. I have downloaded all the latest windows drivers and the firmware to the time capsule is up to date. Does anybody have any experience with getting windows 7 to print properly on a time capsule?

Have you plugged the printer directly into the win7 laptop and tried to print, using the current drivers. Is that successful?
If the job is failing half way through, make sure the permissions are correct on everything and make sure you turn on guest access on the TC.
Other than that, sorry I don't really know what is going wrong. Sometimes the issue is two way communications is failing. Try plugging the laptop into the TC with ethernet.

  • Computer Cannot Find Printer Attached to TC USB

I have a 500 gb Time Capsule which has all the latest firmware and which I kind of hate. Currently the device has an HP Photosmart C4480 attached to it via the rear USB port. The Time Capsule is blissfully ignorant of the attachment. When I enter the Print and Fax menu from System Preferences the printer does not appear under any subheading. Currently the only way to print from said printer is to unplug it from my useless Time Capsule and into my MacBook Pro. I know that this is possible because I previously had the printer and TC working in harmony but now they refuse to even acknowledge each others' existence.
If anyone has any advice that would be greatly appreciated. If its at all useful as information my computer does successfully backup from Mac OSX, but refuses to see the TC in a BootCamped Version of Windows. (This is the other reason I hate my Time Capsule but I'm taking it one step at a time.)

The Time Capsule recognizing the device and the mac recognizing the device are one and the same. I do not understand your distinction.
You stated "The Time Capsule is blissfully ignorant of the attachment." I understood this as saying that when you used the AirPort Utility, the printer was not showing up for the TC. So, my point is, if it doesn't show up in the AirPort Utility, it won't show up for computers trying to access it from the TC. Sorry, if I misunderstood.
Additionally, I know that this printer is compatible because it used to work with my Time Capsule and then stopped.
Yes, I did gather this from your comments, but I have seen situations where certain printer functionality with the AirPort's USB port as non-consistent between models.
(I even got the printer as part of an Apple promotion...)
Ok, so even if Apple provides the printer as part of a promotion, they are not necessarily guaranteeing that it will be compatible with the AirPorts. Of course, that wouldn't be true if they provided that compatibility in writing. In fact only the manufacturer of the printer can assure that it can provide printer drivers that allow their printer to be accessible from a router's USB port.
