Cannot add server to DFS replication group

I am trying to add a server to a DFS replication group but I always get error  Servername: information cannot be retrieve for this computer. The network path cannot be found.
THat is the error I get when adding this member to an existing replication group.

Hi,
From the error message it seems like the folder you are trying to add does not exist, or the network is not available.
Can you directly access the folder you are going to add with \\servername\folder (the same as the path you are going to add)?
If access is fine but still cannot add it as a folder target, test to disable Windows Firewall on both servers.
Specifically it require following ports to be open.

  • Is It Possible to Add a Fileserver to a DFS Replication Group Without Connectivity to FSMO Roles Holder DC But Connectivity to Site DC???

I apologize in advance for the rambling novella, but I tried to include as many details ahead of time as I could.
I guess like most issues, this one's been evolving for a while, it started out with us trying to add a new member
to a replication group that's on a subnet without connectivity to the FSMO roles holder. I'll try to describe the
layout as best as I can up front.
The AD only has one domain & both the forest & domain are at 2008R2 function level. We've got two sites defined in
Sites & Services, Site A is an off-site datacenter with one associated subnet & Site B with 6 associated subnets, A-F.
The two sites are connected by a WAN link from a cable provider. Subnets E & F at Site B have no connectivity to Site A
across that WAN, only what's available through the front side of the datacenter through the public Internet. The network
engineering group involved refuses to route that WAN traffic to those two subnets & we've got no recourse against that
decision; so I'm trying to find a way to accomplish this without that if possible.
The FSMO roles holder is located at Site A. I know that I can define a Site C, add Subnets E & F to that site, & then
configure an SMTP site link between Sites A & C, but that only handles AD replication, correct? That still wouldn't allow me, for example,
to enumerate DFS namespaces from subnets E & F, or to add a fileserver on either of those subnets as a member to an existing
DFS replication group, right? Also, root scalability is enabled on all the namespace shares.
Is there a way to accomplish both of these things without transferring the FSMO roles from the original DC at Site A to, say,
the bridgehead DC at Site B?
When the infrastructure was originally setup by a former analyst, the topology was much more simple & everything was left
under the Default First Site & no sites/subnets were setup until fairly recently to resolve authentication issues on
Subnets E & F... I bring this up just to say, the FSMO roles holder has held them throughout the build out & addition of
all sorts of systems & I'm honestly not sure what, if anything, the transfer of those roles will break.
I definitely don't claim to be an expert in any of this, I'll be the first to say that I'm a work-in-progress on this AD design stuff,
I'm all for R'ing the FM, but frankly I'm dragging bottom at this point in finding the right FM. I've been digging around
on Google, forums, & TechNet for the past week or so as this has evolved, but no resolution yet.
On VMs & machines on subnets E & F when I go to DFS Management -> Namespace -> Add Namespaces to Display..., none show up
automatically & when I click Show Namespaces, after a few seconds I get "The namespaces on DOMAIN cannot be enumerated. The
specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted". If I run a dfsutil /pktinfo, nothing shows except \sysvol
but I can access the domain-based DFS shares through Windows Explorer with the UNC path \\DOMAIN-FQDN\Share-Name then when
I run a dfsutil /pktinfo it shows all the shares that I've accessed so far.
So either I'm doing something wrong, or, for some random large, multinational company, every sunbet & fileserver one wants
to add to a DFS Namespace has to be able to contact the FSMO roles holder? Or, are those ADs broken down with a child domain
for each Site & a FSMO roles holder for that child domain is located in each site?

    Hi,
A DC in siteB should helpful. I still not see any article mentioned that a DFS client have to connect to PDC every time trying to access a DFS domain based namespace.
Please see following article. I pasted a part of it below:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782417(v=ws.10).aspx
Domain controllers play numerous roles in DFS:
Domain controllers store DFS metadata in Active Directory about domain-based namespaces. DFS metadata consists of information about entire namespace, including the root, root targets, links, link targets, and settings. By default, root servers
that host domain-based namespaces periodically poll the domain controller acting as the primary domain controller (PDC) emulator master to obtain an updated version of the DFS metadata and store this metadata in memory.
So Other DC needs to connect PDC for an updated metadata.
Whenever an administrator makes a change to a domain-based namespace, the
change is made on the domain controller acting as the PDC emulator master and is then replicated (via Active Directory replication) to other domain controllers in the domain.
    Domain Name Referral Cache
A domain name referral contains the NetBIOS and DNS names of the local domain, all trusted domains in the forest, and domains in trusted forests. A
DFS client requests a domain name referral from a domain controller to determine the domains in which the clients can access domain-based namespaces.
    Domain Controller Referral Cache
A domain controller referral contains the NetBIOS and DNS names of the domain controllers for the list of domains it has cached. A DFS client requests a domain controller referral from a domain controller (in the client’s domain)
to determine which domain controllers can provide a referral for a domain-based namespace.
    Domain-based Root Referral Cache
The domain-based root referrals in this memory cache do not store targets in any particular order. The targets are sorted according to the target selection method only when requested from the client. Also, these referrals are based on DFS metadata stored
on the local domain controller, not the PDC emulator master.
Thus it seems to be acceptable to have a disconnect between sites shortly when cache is still working on siteB.

  • Cannot add server to pool: OVMAPI_4004E, but hostname set to FQDN

It's very simillar problem like thread "Cannot Add Server to Pool: OVMAPI_4010E Attempt to send command: dispatch..", but setting
hostname with FQDN on Ora VM Manager and Ora VM Server, repairing all configuration files (using grep -R ...) and reboot OVM
server and OVMM didn't brought any effect...
    Environment:
    Oracle VM Server version 3.2.2
    Build: 520
    Oracle VM Manager:
    Version: 3.2.2.520
    Build: 20130218_520
    Description:
I have discovered and setup an OVM Server. Then I tried to create a new pool "ikr-pool". When I tried to attach discovered server ("srv01-xx.cssz.cz"),
I got error attached bellow. After this actions svr01-xx stays incorrectly as "member of pool" in /etc/ovs-agent/db/server database, so I need on VM server
to stop ovs-agent, remove file /etc/ovs-agent/db/server, start ovs-agent again, and then re-take ownership on VM server again. Then srv01-xx stays
    as "Unassigned server".

Solved. Problem was the same like in thread "I/O error while communicating with HTTP server: Connection timed out" - it wasn't accessible IP connection between Ora VM Manager and Ora VM server IP alias for server pool. But there was very confusing message in errorlog: "dispatch https://?uname?:[email protected]:8899/api/3 set_pool_member_ip_list [10.20.11.11], Status: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcException: I/O error while communicating with HTTP server: Connection timed out [Thu Mar 28 14:36:30 CET 2013]". Noticed IP address was IP address for VM server, not for VM pool, which makes me quite angry.

Also, pinging the hostname (esx-4170-01) returns with success from esx-4170-01.lab.xxx.com (the FQDN).Looks like the hostname of the machine is only set to the first part, not the FQDN, which is being returned by DNS. Ensure that what you get from the "hostname" command matches exactly what you get from DNS for that IP address.

  • You cannot add invitees in iCal as groups created in Address book

That makes it rather time consuming having to add each invitee one by one. This has got be a bug.

...i ran software updates and i do not see an entry to update ical to 4.0.3. so do i get the latest version?
If you ran software update your system version should be Mac OS X (10.6.5), and iCal should be Version 4.0.4.
Try downloading and installing the Mac OS X v10.6.5 Update (Combo).

  • DFS - The replication group cannot be created - insufficient permissions - NOT DOMAIN ADMIN, LOCAL ADMIN

    Hi,
I am trying to setup DFS replication on tow servers. I am local admin on the servers but NOT domain account. Is it possible to create Replication group anyway? or should i contact the Domain administrator to the job?
    Thanks

    Hi,
We cannot use local administrator to create a dfs replication group. By default, Domain Admins group can create a dfs replication group. You could also delegate to a user or group the ability to create replication groups and the user must add to the local Administrators
    group on the namespace server.

  • DFS Replication doesn't work. Windows server 2012. Failed to communicate with partner. Error 5012.

Hi! I really confused with this error. I created replication group within two servers - AD domain controller and File server. I just want to migrate some files from AD domain controller to FS. But synchronization doesn't work. I get the error
    - DFS Replication cannot replicate with partner <server name> for replication group <domain>\<name space>\<share>. The partner did not recognize the connection or the replication group configuration. The DFS Replication service used
partner DNS name MyDCName, IP address <the server ip>, and WINS address <server name> but failed with error ID: 9026 (The connection is invalid). Event ID: 5012
It seems my DC doesn’t accept connection from FS. I checked network, permissions and other settings which are mentioned in this article.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/953be9ef-e9e3-4885-a5c4-47fc475ba562/dfs-is-not-working-anymore?Thread%3A953be9ef-e9e3-4885-a5c4-47fc475ba562=Microsoft.Forums.Data.Models.Discussion&ThreadViewModel%3A953be9ef-e9e3-4885-a5c4-47fc475ba562=Microsoft.Forums.CachedViewModels.ThreadPageViewModel&forum=winserverfiles

  • DFSR Error - The Replication Group Cannot Be Found

In the DFS Management console when I view entries under the Replication node of the tree I am seeing three entries with red X's as icons.  When I click on one of these an error is displayed...'The replication group cannot be queried.  The replication

    Hi,
You may also click on the bad replication groups, select Delete to remove them and click New Replication Group to create new replication groups.

  • Cannot add Users to Groups

    Hi there,
I cannot add any users to any groups in the last week. This occurs only with the Server app.  In Workgroup Manager I can, but the group membership do not appear when I open the Server app.  I have tried to do this through the individual user page or through the group page.  Each time I get the following message "Operation is not supported by the directory node."
    Suggestions?
    Thanks
    Mitch

Small correction.  Also cannot add group in Workgroup Manager.  The error is "This action failed because an Open Directory plugin has not implemented that functionality yet."

  • DFS Replication for one group only not working

I have 2 DFS Replication groups and each group contains the same 2 member servers.
One group is set to replicate one drive pair between these members, and the other group is set to replicate another drive pair between the same member servers.
Replication works perfectly for one group / folder, but it does not even start on the other group.
This proves that there is no problem with the connectivity between the members, or to the AD.
The DFS Replication Health Report for the group that does not replicate shows no error, just 2 Warnings:
WARNINGS  (2 servers with warnings)(Show All)
    BOG-RODC   (1 warning)
Reference member returned no replicated folders.
    MTL-HV-FS01   (1 warning)
This member is waiting for initial replication for replicated folder BOG-RODC_D_Drive.
This is very weird, I don't see why it does not replicate, I'm pooling my hair out. Please help

  • The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the folder with the following local path: C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain

    Hi,
i am facing the problem SVSVOL folder replication, i also checked dcdiag and result is DFSRevent fail .
in event log i found the event Error:
The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the folder with the following local path: C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain. This server has been disconnected from other partners for 173 days, which is longer than the time allowed by the MaxOfflineTimeInDays parameter
(61). DFS Replication considers the data in this folder to be stale, and this server will not replicate the folder until this error is corrected.
To resume replication of this folder, use the DFS Management snap-in to remove this server from the replication group, and then add it back to the group. This causes the server to perform an initial synchronization task, which replaces the stale data with fresh
data from other members of the replication group.
    Additional Information:

  • Number of Hosts in a Replication Group

    Hello,
I just implemented Replication in my application, and was able to get it to work fight away, and quite nicely at that I might add. However, I do have an issue I would like some help with:
The agent that is part of the replication group starts up and reads a configuration file that specifies host and port information on other members of the group. It then creates ReplicationHostAddress entries for each host:port combination and adds them to the replication group using the replicationManagerAddRemoteSite() call on the EnvironmentConfig. I am currently setting the number of replication sites via the setReplicationNumSites() call to 1 + the number of remote sites specified.
All of this works fine, I can see elections being called and a master being elected. However, I cannot start if one and only one member of the group is available to start. It waits forever until at least one other agent starts up. Is there a way I can configure things so that my agent will start up even if there are no other agents available to talk to, and allow new entries to join the replication group as it suits them? I even tried changing the ReplicationManagerAckPolicy, but that doesn't seem to have any effect.
    Thanks,
    Prashanth

Yes, there are some tricks you can play with the setting of the "number of sites" configuration variable. But you have to be careful. We use that number in elections. If the number is wrong, you run the risk of choosing a master from within a minority subset of the total replication group. This could lead to a duplicate master situation. When the two subsets are eventually reunited, and the duplicate master situation is detected, one of the two masters will "lose", and will be forced to discard any transactions that the other master did not already have. In other words, you will lose transactions that you may have thought had already been durably stored and replicated.

  • Cannot add multiple members of a failover cluster to a DFSR replication group

Server 2012 RTM. I have two physical servers, in two separate data centers 35 miles apart, with a GbE link over metro fibre between them. Both have a large (10TB+) local RAID storage arrays, but given the physical separation there is no physical shared storage.
The hosts need to be in a Windows failover cluster (WSFC), so that I can run high-availability VMs and SQL Availability Groups across these two hosts for HA and DR. VM and SQL app data storage is using a SOFS (scale out file server) network share on separate
    servers.
I need to be able to use DFSR to replicate multi-TB user data file folders between the two local storage arrays on these two hosts for HA and DR. But when I try to add the second server to a DFSR replication group, I get the error:
The specified member is part of a failover cluster that is already a member of the replication group. You cannot add multiple members for the same cluster to a replication group.
I'm not clear why this has to be a restriction. I need to be able to replicate files somehow for HA & DR of the 10TB+ of file storage. I can't use a clustered file server for file storage, as I don't have any shared storage on these two servers. Likewise
I can't run a HA single DFSR target for the same reason (no shared storage) - and in any case, this doesn't solve the problem of replicating files between the two hosts for HA & DR. DFSR is the solution for replicating files storage across servers with
    non-shared storage.
Why would there be a restriction against using DFSR between multiple hosts in a cluster, so long as you are not trying to replicate folders in a shared storage target accessible to both hosts (which would obviously be a problem)? So long as you are not replicating
folders in c:\ClusterStorage, there should be no conflict.
Is there a workaround or alternative solution?

Yes, I read that series. But it doesn't address the issue. The article is about making a DFSR target highly available. That won't help me here.
I need to be able to use DFSR to replicate files between two different servers, with those servers being in a WSFC for the purpose of providing other clustered services (Hyper-V, SQL availability groups, etc.). DFSR should not interfere with this, but it
is being blocked between nodes in the same WSFC for a reason that is not clear to me.
This is a valid use case and I can't see an alternative solution in the case where you only have two physical servers. Windows needs to be able to provide HA, DR, and replication of everything - VMs, SQL, and file folders. But it seems that this artificial
barrier is causing us to need to choose either clustered services or DFSR between nodes. But I can't see any rationale to block DFSR between cluster nodes - especially those without shared storage.
Perhaps this blanket block should be changed to a more selective block at the DFSR folder level, not the node level.

  • I suddenly cannot add/edit users or groups!!! (Lion Server)

I suddenly cannot add/edit users or groups!!! (Lion Server)
On the latest Mac Mini Server Lion 10.7.2
Everything was working fine at first, I'm pretty sure either since i've upgraded to 10.7.2 or since we try to connect Windows8 to the server, Lion Server is not working to good anymore, from that time I cannot add/edit users or groups & assign any users to any goups, the + sign looks desable, and everything seems pretty glichy. The other thing I have notice is that a huge amount of Users & Groups has been added without my consent.
Do I have to ReInstall Lion Server??
Why do I have all these random Users & Groups listed? (see screenshot)

I had the same issue.  I opened the Workgroup Manager application and noticed the message "not authenticated as diradmin to directory: /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1" was under the icon bar at the top of the popup screen.  When I clicked on that bar I entered the diradmin username and my password.  After I exited the authentication dialogue box the message now read "Authenticated as diradmin to directory: /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1."
At that point I had full privalages in both the Workgroup Manager and Server App to create users and groups.
Not sure if this why the problem occurred in the first place but at least I resolved it without any major problems.
