Cannot add Transitions in iMovie

Hi,
I am a new iMovie user.
Trying to edit my first video for YouTube, But cannot add a transition.
If I grab a transition & try to insert it between clips, the transition 'hops' back to it's location ...what am I
doing wrong - PLEASE HELP

That should do - as transitions usually is just a few seconds long.
then when iMovie behaves badly - I trash it's pref file. Use to help - else
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
• iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
• Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
• Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
• a codec is used that doesn't work
• problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
• version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
• preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
• other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
• External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
• USB-flash-memories do not work
• Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
• iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
This You do by
_ close iPhoto
_ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
• free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
• external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
• GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
• Screen must be set to million-colors
• Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
• Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
• Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
• Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
• In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)

Why can't I add transitions to iMovie 11?

Hi. I am using iMovie 11 to edit a video. I want to add transitions, but every time I go to content library, "transitions" is greyed out. All the items in the content library are greyed out, actually. My movie doesn't have a theme, so nothing automatic is activated. It doesn't matter if a clip or section is selected or not - I cannot add transitions. Does anyone know any possible reasons for this and how to remedy it? Thanks!!

I understand that you are unable manually add transitions. This sounds like you may have automatic transitions enabled. Try disabling this to see if you can manually add them.

Cannot add transitions to video

Hi There,
I am trying to add transitions to a video but none are showing up in the library on the side bar.
I tried to disable automatic transitions but I cannot click on window> movie properties
There are no transitions in the video right now.
Anyone know how to fix this?

As others said, you can create a short video to use as transition after your menus. You can take a frame of your menu animation as starting point and edit some animation in FCP, i.e. making your buttons (I mean the graphic/text you use as buttons) go out of the screen or something like that. I think the best inspiration is the way that menus "go away" in a lot of commercial movies DVDs.
You can add an audio track with some effects in FCP with some synchro with the movie.
Remember that if your menu background is animated, you cannot control in what point of the loop the viewer will press a button, but that happens when you use the standards trasition too.

Cannot add photos to iMovie project

I had started work on an iMovie '09 project (version 8.0.4) and was using both videos and photos in the project. However, after a certain point when I tried to drag a photo into the project area, iMovie would not let me add it. I am still able to insert videos, though. Also, I am not able to publish the project as a quicktime file. I created another project and the same problems persisted. Any ideas on how to fix this issue would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Transitions - suddenly cannot add them ???

Greetings iMovie Answer Team!! While working on a one hour wedding, I got the 'unexpected crash' while adding a slick 3 transition. Not sure if it figures into the problem, but I cannot add transitions anymore!
I can no longer drag the transition to the bottom nor does the 'add' button light up. It still shows up in the preview pane as how it would look if I could add it. Everything else seems to be operating properly.
Any suggestions as to why this may have happened? Of course, how can I get this to operate properly again? I've already shut down and restarted but the issue persists. I look forward to your expert advise, as always. Chuck.

Thanks, Bev. Yes I did update the Gee Three transitions. The problem was also an issue with the standard iMovie 6 transitions. Somewhat erratic in their behavior. Still looking for suggestions. I'm sure the culprit was the 'unexpected' crash.

Can't add transition to Quicktime import

I made a Quicktime movie in IMovie using a series of photos and then imported it to FCE. It's now sitting in the Timeline but I cannot add transitions to either end of it. Any thoughts?

If you come from iMovie, you're used to iMovie making transitions by shortening the adjacent shots, taking a bit off each of them to create an overlap for the transition to occur. This incidentally shortens your sequence and possibly pulls things out of alignment with your audio, but that's a problem for iMovie users to deal with.
In FCE and FCP and all other professional editing applications, the overlap is not taken from inside the shot; it's taken from extra material, called handles in FCE, that lie beyond the end of the shot. So if you put a shot in a sequence that uses all the available media for that shot, that is you marked the out point on the very last frame, there are then no handles for the application to extend the shot and create the necessary overlap to make the transition, and the transition will fail.
For the default one second transition you need at least 15 more frames after the marked out point of the outgoing, and 15 more frames in front of, before the marked in point on the incoming shot. That will give you enough material for the default centered on edit, one second cross dissolve or whatever transition you're adding.

Error message when trying to add transitions

can't add transitions in imovie 6, but I could 2 days ago. It was also failing to render titles.I tried these suggestions from this great forum: trashed iMovie prefs,repaired permissions, checked for 3rd party plug-ins, ran repair hard disk,ran MacJanitor, reinstalled imovie 6,freed up 28 GB on hd, but still couldn't render titles. After I ran diskWarrior, I was able to render titles again but still can't add transitions.Is the number of photos or titles an issue? I have 450 and still need to add video clips & music. I have to have this idvd project for our church done in 3 days and things keep screwing up!

What is your operating system? Reader version?

Can i add transitions to imovie11 aside from the ones that are already there?

you need to have the same computer the same folder where you put your pictures like a folder on your Desktop on a mac or a pc.
But if you wan't to have your pictures on your iPod cache folder select the checkbox below, it's Include Full resolution photos, by clicking that, the photos you'll put on your iPod will have a copy on a folder of your iPod i.e.
When using win xp:
Find your iPod on my computer: "Steve's iPod"-> open it-> go to Photos-> Full Resolution-> then continue opening folders (it's safe) until you see your Photo copies.
It's a great way of moving it from another computer, like just using copy, cut, paste

I have never used iMovie before. I would like to connect many videos together and edit them. I would also like to learn how to add transitions between scenes and add music. Help!

I want to learn how to create a video in iMovie. My goal is to be able to take many vidoes and place them into one. I would also like to delete scenes and and add transitions. I am also hoping to add music to the video I create.

How do I add transitions automatic in iMovie 10.0.3

Hi,
I updated imovie a couple of days ago and I can't find the feature in iMovie that adds transitions automatic. All guides on internet says that you have to press "file- project theme" and change it from there. When I click the file button in top of the screen the option "project theme" is not there. There has to be a way to add transitions automatic. Right now I'm working on a slideshow with hundereds of pictures and adding transistions manually is not an option

IMovie '11 cannot add a cutaway. Pls help

I'm using iMovie '11 and I cannot add a cutaway. The advanced tool preference is already checked. When I drag the clip, the green bar snaps to either side of the clip, but doesn't allow me to set the new clip on top as a cutaway. The textural box with the options doesn't even appear. Please help.

• Trash iMovie Pref file
• Repair Permsions - Disk Util tool
• Repair Hard Disk - Disk Util tool - but now You need to start-up from DVD or external Hard disk
• free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk - more than 25Gb ? Should be.

IMOVIE will not let me edit, arrange or add transitions

I was using Imovie with no problems on my desktop, all the files worked smoothly and exported etc.
I am away from my desktop and need to put the video together again, but I am unable to edit, rearrange the order of clips or add transitions after the clip.
I was using imovie 8, and it was not working, so I uninstalled and deleted the imovie file, then I reinstalled and paid to update imovie to 10. Still I am unable to edit the clips (which are editable on my dekstop just fine) . I tried importing videos of all types but none can be edited.
Any advice???

Instead of double clicking on the project name, try double clicking on the film strip.

I am using I movie effect " the game" to create a trailer of my own pics, but when I use movie effect I cannot add pics to the movie so can someone please help me out with this problem, I baiscally need to add pics in movie effects instead of clips. As you know pics can only be used in album scrapbook filmstrip etc etc effect & nt in movie effect.

Select the Trailer you are working on, then from iMovie's menu select File>Convert to Project. You will now be able to edit the Trailer just like a normal project, including adding photos.
It's best to duplicate the Trailer before converting it. In Project Library view (where all your projects are listed), click on your Trailer then from the menu select File>Duplicate Project.

Error message when trying to add transition or won't render anything!

I had been very successful in building a movie with video clips and still photos, and all was going along well until all of a sudden, I cannot add any more transitions! I keep getting an error message that states: "An unknown error occurred. You may be able to continue without any problems. You may also wish to save, quit, and re-launch IMovie HD."
Occasionally, it will let me add the transition, but then it just sits there for hours and will not render. I'm up to a 1 1/2 hour movie, which has taken nearly two weeks to build (I'm very new at this!) and would hate to start over!! I did try making a new movie, and the transitions ran just fine!
I have restarted umpteen times, even reinstalled IMovie HD. I'm running system 10.4.6 with an 80G harddrive, but have the movie saved on an external harddrive because it wouldn't fit on the other one. (It's at 22 G now!!)
Any suggestions??

I spoke too soon. I began a new movie and imported
photo clips, which rendered just fine. However, I
can drag transitions in between the photos, but they
simply will not render. Everything was just swell
until yesterday afternoon when I changed the length
of the clips so that there would be enough room for

Aha! That may be different problem. There's a bug in iMovie that makes it impossible to update image clips after you empty the iMovie trash. If you imported the image with the Ken Burns checkbox ON, the bug can affect you later.
It's possible, I suppose, that this bug not only prevented you from updating the clips to a new duration, but made it impossible to add the transition to the clips.
After importing your images with the Ken Burns checkbox on, you might try dragging the source image out of the iMovie trash, described here:

Importing transitions from imovie to final cut problems

Hello, I made a musicvideo in imovie, it´s all finished with cuts and transitions but I want to make the "final touch" with balance, colours etc in final cut.
The problem: when I import the imovie project into final cut pro x the clips and the transitions changes the duration so the clips nolonger sync with the music and some of the clips are much longer/shorter than the original. I don´t want to do all the job again, editing and add new transitions in final cut as it already took me a long time......Anyone have any solution?

You can delete the transitions in iMovie and re-add them after importing into FCP X. Granted, this is some work, but it should not be all that much. It is easy to add a number of transitions and to set their parameters all at once.
Like BenB said, transitions behave differently in both programs, and they do not match, so this conversion can cause problems, as you are now well aware.
