Cannot apply keywords/metadata to old pics - says "read only" files

Hi, I'm new to Apple World. Got a new Intel iMac, latest version Leopard, Photoshop Elements 6 that came with Bridge. No problem working with new photos. But it will not let me apply new keywords or metadata to old pictures imported from disk because it says they are "read only." These old photos were copied to my Mac hard drive from DVDs that were incremental backups from my Photoshop Elements 4.0 catalog on my old Windows XP PC. They were all copied into folders that I named to correspond with the backup disks. Some of the keywords ("tags" on PC program) imported, but many didn't. So I'm going through the arduous task of manually inputting the data again. Tried it with a template first -- did let me add keywords. Then bringing up each picture individually it gives me the "can't apply metadata to read only files" message. I have hundreds of old photos in over 100 different categories (previously topical tags) to go through here. What is the solution? Please help! Thanks. Judy

Judy
can you be more specific about the 'Old Files'. Are they jpeg or tiff or something else. Do they have the proper extension jpeg: .jpg tiff: .tif etc..
And I don't know what copy from Elements catalog means, do you have the actual original files copied or just previews or other files that were set there by elements in the catalog?
Have you already checked if the files are not locked itself? select one in the finder, choose info and see if it is locked by itself ( there can also be a lock symbol in the bridge thumbnail that can be changed using Bridge menu.
Last, not many visitors of this forum use Elements, have you already tried this question in the Elements forum itself??

  • My Time machine has stopped backing up saying there are some read only files.

My Time machine has stopped backing up and says that ther are some read only files preventing this. What steps do I need to take to fix it?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • [SOLVED] /bin/tar: Cannot utime: Read-only file system

While doing a tar backup on my servers, I get this error:
    /bin/tar: /usr/local/bin/sendEmail: Cannot utime: Read-only file system
The error happens on all files in /usr that I'm trying to backup. I know why the error is happening -- I deliberately mount /usr as read-only.
I'd like to know why tar is trying to "utime" my files and how I can stop that behaviour if possible?
    This is my tar command:
    tar cjf /mnt/backup/backup.tar.bz2 --label='backup_090116' --atime-preserve --no-wildcards-match-slash --files-from=/root/backup.include --exclude-from=/root/backup.exclude
    TIA

Isn't it quite pointless to preserve timestamps on files from a filesystem on which timestamps aren't modified? Maybe tar tries to update the timestaps prior to archiving the file and is that giving troubles.

  • Cannot make changes to the contents of this read-only folder

I recently got a new laptop and loaded Office 2013.  We have three inboxes in Outlook and are using Cox IMAP.  I get the following message when I try to delete emails from the primary inbox "Cannot make changes to the contents of this read-only
folder". Emails can be deleted from the other folders with no problem.
Does anyone know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

    Hi
As per the information and details provided by you, to solve the problem of Outlook inbox folder, please follow these steps: -
Step 1: - If you are unable to delete all emails from a given Outlook folder, most likely that folder is locked.
    Restarting Windows should fix it.
Step 2: - If you are unable to delete only some emails, then your
Outlook data file might be corrupted.
    Step 3: -
Empty your Deleted items mail folder, then try again to delete emails.
    Step 4: -
Hard deletes the selected emails – While the emails are highlighted/selected, keep the
Shift key pressed and hit the Delete key.
    Step 5: -
Restart Outlook in Safe Mode and try deleting the emails from there.
    Step 6: -
Edit the culprit email (Actions > Edit Message), save it back and try to delete it.
I hope this information will be helpful for you.
    Thanks and regards

  • Cannot open .jpg files; says read-only and no access

I cannot open .jpg files I've been working on, even though I saved them as .jpg.  The prompt kept asking me to save the files over & over.  I did for a while then said NO to close the files.  Now it says access is denied.  Went to properties and tried to uncheck box for read-only, but it says I don't have access to do that.  How can I get my files back...these were very special photos.  Please help!

No...just PSE7.  Unfortunately, when I tried to cut & paste the photos from
my camera disk to my hard drive, the problem photo completely disappeared.
When I go into recent history, the shortcuts are there, but none of them
work.  They say the file has been moved or changed so...I don't even know
where they are for now.  Do I need to call a repairman?

  • Cannot change .CBR/Z read only files

    Hi Everyone,
I have downloaded some comics and want to get them into an app in itunes then onto my ipad. The files are "read only".
When I right click and change the properties from read only it does not change the files inside the CBR/Z files.
If I extract the files then I cannot get the folder into itunes.
Any ideas how I can fix this?
    Cheers

    No.
iTunes writes the data to the file and updates the iTunes library.itl file (iTunes database file) so it can display all the data without having to reread every file all the time.
Whenever iTunes access a file, it rereads the metadata from that file and updates the iTunes database.
Since the file was not updated (read only), next time you access it, iTunes "corrects" its data..

  • Signature error saying read only

I am receiving an error message when I try to add a digital signature to a document right after creating it.The message says that it is read only document and cannot be saved, however it is not open in any other screens. This used to work and I have tried removing from the computer and re-installing it, but no luck. I am able to open it before emailing and sign it before sending it out, but else I get the message??? I really need this feture back and am not sure what else to try.

I an using Acrobat Pro 9 and it is stand alone. After I create a document out of Word and it becomes an Adobe PDF I want to use the signature button to drag the blue box over a line I have for a signature and place a digital signature that I have stored in Acrobat on the line. When I do that, it says it is read only and it will not save it that way. If I close the document, attach it to an email, and then open it and place the digital signature on it then, it will be attached to the email as it was signed, however it does not save on the computer as it was signed. Adobe used to let me sign and save it right away like I am trying to do.

  • Crash Bang 15th day of 30 day trial, file now says "read only"?

so I've lost a lot of work and I don't understand. Files not found to open, and files panel says it's "read only". Doesn't convert to writable or will it change when I click the "turn off read-only" option.
Am I screwed now or what?

Tried that, no CD thing either, I just back up files, most were corrupted but I least I didn't lose everything.
    Thanks

  • Toshiba HD worked fine with 2008 MBPro, but when I try to use with new MBAir, it says "read only" - how can I fix?

I have a Toshiba external HD that I used with my old 2008 MBPro with no issues. I just got a new MBAir, and when I try to use the same Toshiba HD it will not allow me to write to the drive. The drive mounts and I can open files from it, but when I look at the info under Sharing & Permissions it says "You can only read." I'm not able to Verify it in Disk Utility either, as when I open it there all the Verify buttons are greyed out.
I also noticed the drive format says Windows NTSF, which I don't understand since I was using it with a Mac before and have never used it with a PC. Do I have to reformat it to write to it from my MBAir? I have files on there that I don't want to lose, and the only PC I have available to me is at work.

  • HT201250 My external hard drive suddenly says "read-only" should I run a disk repair on it and what does that do?

Has any one used Disk Repair on an external hard drive? Does it erase everything?

    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Fix Permissions for a Locked Drive
Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Paste the following at the prompt. Press RETURN after each. The first command will prompt for you to enter your admin password. It will not be echoed to the screen. After entering your password press RETURN again.
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
    killall finder
An alternative is to download BatChmod and use it to fix the permissions.

  • I have a Macbook Pro, my external hardrive appears on disk utilities as writeable but when I try to copy files from my Mac to the hardrive it won't copy. Also, when I go to info on the hardrive it says read only :=S

    As I said......

Are you saying that in the Get Info window you don't see a section like this:
I'm asking about what you see listed under the Privilege column.

  • Time Machine says "read-only", "can't repair", & won't backup to external HD.

I really, REALLY do not want to start over a lose all my past backups. I also do not have another external hard drive this big and can't really afford a new one any time soon.
Is there a way to fix this without too much trouble?
It was running fine just a few days ago. I unplug the HD from time to time and don't always start it when I start my computer.
I'm using a Western Digital My Book Studio (I believe) hard drive.
    Help?

Nope, nope, nope. I tried all that the first time everything happened. I consider myself fairly computer savvy in that I usually do the general troubleshoots first.
I shut down the computer. Restarted the computer. Nothing after 30 min. So I shut it down and restarted again. Reset PRAM. Disk Utility + Mount. Disk Utility Repair Disk. Various other tricks. Nothing.
It finally showed in the Finder for some reason and in fear I bought a new hard drive and copied my backup files. Just did that today.
I'd love to use the same hard drive, but it won't allow me do anything for some reason saying I don't have permission.
I'm just going to use the new hard drive and reformat the hard drive again from scratch.
    Thanks for the reply though.

  • Recently my keyboard on my macbook pro died. i backed up the machine to my Seagate 500GB hard drive, successfully, and sent the notebook in for repairs. Now that the macbook is repaired, i can read from the seagate, but not write to it. It says read only.

Recently my Macbook Pro's keyboard failed. Using my wireless keyboard, i managed to backup everything to my 500gb Seagate external hard drive. I sent the machine in, had the keyboard repaired, and now the machine is back, and i am loading my content back onto the macbook. My problem is that the drive is now read only, and i have searched for all the obvious fixes. The lock on the permissions secion of the info block on the drive. (not present). I have even tried disk utility, but all the options are greyed out.
I am a graphic designer, and so i use my external drive extensively to move artwork around, so it is important that i can make it writable. It worked perfectly on this very same machine, two weeks ago, and nothing has changed on the drive, so i can only assume it is a software issue on the operating system.
I have read through all the forums, etc, and can find nothing that works. I am loath to change anything on the drive, as it was working perfectly on this system before the system went in for its repair.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • An External Hard Drive says read only, I want to write to this drive.  How do I change this?

My external hard drive, which is connected via firewire, changed to a read only drive.  I want to write to this drive.  How do I change the setting to write to the drive?

If the drive comes from the Windows world, it will probably have an NTFS format. MacOS doesn't like NTFS and won't write to it. Would have to get some third party driver to enable writing.
