Cannot Archive and Install--help.

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and am having a number of problems since the upgrade. Would like to Archive and Install to get a clean System folder, but that option is now blanked out and only "Erase and Install" is available. Permissions are repaired and Disc verifies fine. What can I do to restore the ability to Archive and Install?

Alternatively, reinstall Leopard via E&I and migrate from the bootable backup/clone of your previous Tiger installation—assuming you followed normal practices and made one.

  • Archive and install help snow leopard 1.6.5

I've a macbook pro 2009 mid year model.
and i accidentally deleted this adobe air and after reinstalled..it was corrupted and my friend borrowed my mac...and he installed those cracked photoshops. and i now i want to get them off my computer.
I'm thinking about reinstalling the Mac OS? with a clean fresh one. but i don't want to lose all my iphotos, imovie, calendars, itune, music, movies and the photos in photo booth. is there anyways to keep them? I'm going on a trip really need to get it done in 9 more days.
I've read some forums about Archive and install ? but I've tried youtube for some tutor how to make a Archive and install ? but i couldn't find anything. or websites. please help me up.
my questions is pretty much. how do i make an Archive and install on my macbook, snow leopard 1.6.5 or keep every files, so i can reformat my macbook pro. (planning to update to the 1.6.6 after everything is done like reinstalled mac osx.)
    cheers

Snow Leopard no longer has Archive and Install. To keep your user data, clone backup your machine at least twice, and restore only the data you need after an erase and install.
Report your "friend" to http://www.apple.com/legal if you suspect them of having put illegal software on your machine. You don't know what else they might have messed up..

  • Will an archive and install help me?

Since installing a new hard drive on my first gen macbook last year, and especially since installing Snow Leopard last summer, I have been plagued by beach balls and freezes and even the occasional kernel panic (OK, only one of those). Sometimes my computer works fine for several days or a week; sometimes, like today, it freezes three or more times. I've done everything I can think of - tech tool pro says the hardware is OK, as does disk utility on the Snow Leopard disk, PRAM and SMC have been reset time and again, I repair permissions nearly every day. Is there any reason to believe an archive and install might help me? Any other ideas?

no, but there is no reason either to believe that with SL there's something like an "archive & install". it's either erase & install or an upgrade install.
after backing up my precious data, i would opt for the former.

  • Archive and Install help

After getting the blue screen when installing Leopard, I've decided to re-install using the "Archive and Install" feature. After reading the documents here on Apple's site, I'm a bit confused. Can someone please give me a Coles Notes version of how Archive and Install works? Mainly:
What do I need to backup myself? There's a document on Apple's site which discusses the steps for backing up your address book and such... doesn't Archive and Install do this?
I also have Adobe CS3 on my Mac. Will I have to re-install this?
And my wife has some widgets on our computer... I'm thinking that this could be the third party apps that aren't Leopard compatible. Will Archive and Install clear these too?

    Hi Paul Ouimette;
Yes, the Archive & Install does back up the previous system so saying that you should backup may seen a bit redundant. The only problem with that logic is that it assumes that the A&I will go perfectly. If for any reason it doesn't, you can be left high and dry. Most time it does go well but personally I am a bit of a belt and suspenders guy so I always create a clone before doing anything as major as an A&I.
I did an A&I recently and my applications were there. I did have to enter the serial number for CS3 and Aperture again. My dashboard widgets were there though.

  • I need help to recover/relink mail after archive and install

I am helping my friend fix her 15" G4 PowerBook after memory failures caused many crashes. There was no recovering short of a reinstall via "archive and install". All that worked great, but now Mail doesn't recognize the accounts, mailboxes, signatures, etc. that are still located in the user/library/mail folder.
What's up with that? I can't figure out how to relink Mail to this stuff.
    Here's more detail:
    1) After lots of prior debugging (Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, Apple Hardware Test, single-user commands per Apple tech notes), I did the A&I to 10.3.4 from the original disks.
    2) Per Dr. Smoke and The X Lab, I ran the 10.3.9 combo installer right away so that the "older" system would not get confused by the "newer" stuff in the Previous Systems folder.
    3) I Launched Mail and it started anew, i.e. didn't recognize accounts and wanted to start over.
    Thanks for any help.

The account settings are stored in HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. It looks like that file became corrupt -- maybe its permissions went awry (Disk Utility cannot fix that) and Mail just deleted the file to create a new one.
If your friend doesn't have a backup copy of that file, just set up the accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in HOME/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled.

  • Help, I lost my system adminstrator account after archive and install

I did an archive and install and checked 'preserve users and network settings'. Prior to install I had two accounts: mine (adminstrator) and my son's. My iTunes and iPhoto are all on my account. After install, my normal desk top appeared. Software update informed me I had updates to download. I started the process and the password window appeared, but would not accept my password. I checked the users in the right hand corner of the menu bar and only my son's account appeared. When I clicked on that, a log-in window appeared (and my desktop disappeared). The only log-in option is my son's account. I can log into his account ok, but mine no longer shows up. I tried to access my account info in the previous system folder, but my son's account does not have sufficient access rights. How can I get my account back?
As a side note, I went to my old mac (a power pc G4 iMac) and could no longer log-in to iTunes Store or to .Mac. I changed my Apple ID password so I can now log into .Mac and the iTunes store. I don't know how to get my adminstrator account back on my Intel mac. My old Mac cannot be upgraded to Leopard and has no airport card.

Same thing happened to me! Now when I want to delete apps I get a window demanding my administrator password. I give it, but that is no longer correct. Actually, I suspect it is but the Administrator name has changed, but I have no idea what it now is. I tried to use the change password utility on the install disk, but it's just exactly that: a password changer, it won't change the administrator name, or even tell you what it is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Archive and Install of OS X. Help!

My macbook has been stuck at the loading wheel and grey screen for a couple weeks now. I've tried a series of things from re-setting the PRAM and SMC, to booting with the install disc and running the DU, verified and ran disc repair and permission thing. Now that these haven't worked I'm attempting to archive and install, but after i select my language after booting up from the install disc it tells me i can't install OS X. Supposedly this is where you would pick a destination for where you want to install, but it seems I'm kind of stuck. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Right after I boot from the install disc, I get to the select a language screen and hit the arrow to continue, then a box appears saying "preparing to install" followed by the box disappearing and the message "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer. The software can not be installed on this computer."

  • HELP! I did an archive and install and I want my old system back

    Hello,
I had a big problem that actually ended up being a small problem. Unfortunately to try to fix it I did an archive and install. Now I have come to the realization that my Postfix mail setup, my MySQL setup, my PHP setup, my web pages, my Blog are all gone. Now if I go into the "previous system" folder everything seems to be there. Is there a way to just restore the old system to get all that back without having to reconfigure and redo everything?
I tried to copy the old "Library" back out to the / folder, the problem is that this folder is constantly in use and cannot be replaced.
    Any advice?

    Joshua:
You said you did an Archive and Install. You did not say whether this was an upgrade or you were re-installing Tiger.
I suggest you read the article linked above, if you have not already done so, and it will give you an idea of what happened. If you chose to preserve User Settings, it should all be there in your new Library. All you need to do it move over your data and you'll be fine. Otherwise you can just move over your entire Users Folder and it will have everything you need.
You said that you want your old system back. I am not sure if you are saying that you want to go to a previous OS, like Panther, or whether you want your computer back the way it was.
a couple of other points, if I may:
    1. Re-installation, by whatever method, should always be a avenue of last resort. It is the ultimate invasive therapy and likely result in the situation you are in or worse. Every other avenue should be exhausted before resorting to this rememdy.
    2. A good backup strategy is a life saver. During any major procedure, and sometimes without any procedure just of out the blues, your computer can fail and you can lose all your data, your third party apps etc. It is good practice to preferably clone your entire computer to an external Firewire Drive that can also be used as an emergency boot disk.
OK, I gave you much more information that you requested. However, I hope something I said was helpful in terms of recovering your settings and data. Please post back and let me know.
    Good luck.

  • Archive and install cannot acess admin

I did and upgrade from 10.3.9 to Tiger 10.4 using the "archive and install" which creates a previous System folder 1. I cannot acsses anything asking for admin and password, if i go to the accounts in the system prefs pane.
It has me listed as "standard user" so i can't even change me to Admin because it wants my admin and password to unlock.
I have already used the install disk to change password, the only change was to my login name and password.
I did an archive and install so that i could if possible use any of the files from the previous system from 10.3.9 in any of the Tiger's system.
I done a lot of searching here, some i knew few i didn't.
    Suggestions anyone?
    Steve

That is very strange -- the OS is supposed to make sure there is always at least one admin user account. Niel's helpful link should get you going again, but you might want to consider calling AppleCare about this anyway. They should know if something in the installer or migration assistant is buggy enough to let this happen.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Cannot log in after archive and install

Hello, everyone. ive been searching the support pages of the apple site for an hour and i cannot seem to find a resolution to this...
I just peformed an archive and install ad now i cannot log in. i think this happened once before and i called apple support and i was told to log in as root. the problem i am having is that the login window does not give me the option to change the user field, it only allows me to type a password. every time i type my password, the login screen shakes. so even if i wanted to type root into the user field, i cant. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you.
p.s. i was running tiger but lost my tiger disc so i am using the disc that originally came with my g5 which has panther on it...
    dayna

    Hi, Dayna.
    1. Be sure the Caps Lock key isn't active: passwords are case sensitive. You may see an exclamation point on the right side of the password field if the Caps Lock key is engaged.
    2. There was a similar problem if one performed an Archive and Install (A&I) of Jaguar (10.2) over Panther (10.3): see "Can't log in after installing Mac OS X 10.2 over 10.3." I've not heard of a similar problem with performing and A&I of Panther over Tiger, but it may be related. However, before trying the advice therein to perform the A&I without selecting "Preserve Users and Network Settings" you'd need to have a backup of your data, otherwise you risk losing everything in your account. IMO, the most expedient solution would be to buy a replacement Mac OS X Tiger disc. If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, that would be the quickest place to purchase one.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot run java program after archive and install

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and appreciate the help and advice given here.
Yesterday, I did an archive and install on my system which install 10.4.3. Afterwards, I installed X11 and did the software updates which brought my system back to 10.4.8. It also installed Java 1.3.1, 1.4.2, and 1.5 (J2SE5).
Prior to the archive and install, I had no problems executing a java program either in the command line in an X11 window or using Eclipse. However, when I try now I get the exception message "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:". I checked my CLASSPATH and it's not the problem. I am able to compile, and execute the javadoc command. If I type java -version I get
    java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-112)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-64, mixed mode, sharing)
Under Eclipse, I am able to see the Java versions under Preferences - Java - Installed JREs but if I go to the Run -> Run As menu, I see (none applicable).
Thanks for any suggestions to fix this.

    HELP! macbook problems

i need help. onbe day my macbook worked and the next it wouldnt. I would turn it on and it would sound like it was starting up but only display a white screen. after awhile, it would display a flashing folder with a question mark. so i put it away until i could fix it. when i took it out, it started up with my installation disk in it and went to the install. when i go through the steps, it says selct install destination and no icons pop up. it actually went into installation once but i did not hasve the other disk and could not finsish it (i thinkit froze anyways) does anyone have any ideas what to do? thanks so much! its a macbook osx but im not sure the number (10.5, 11 etc..)
I was told to do an archive and install which i tried. My computer keeps freezing, but my smart is verified and i tried to fix problems and it says there are none needing to be fixed. When i go back to install, it let me once and froze. After that, when i would try to click where to install, no icons pop up to install. I tried to erase everything to zero and it freezes. What do i do? Thanks so much!

Take it in for repair. You likely have some other, probably hardware, problem.

  • HELP! Problem after Archive and Install

I need help. I did an Archive and install because I was having problems with my ical not opening. I did the archive and install without checking the "preserve settings" box. I want to know what I need to transfer from either the "previous system" folder that was created when I did the archive and install or a back up I have on a seperate hard drive so that I can get all of my info back (ie: mail, addresses, bookmarks etc.). I am also having problems with some 3rd party software. For instance, when I open password plus I don't have access to all of my saved info.
I am feeling overwhelmed right now and know I am not thinking clearly. Do I just copy and paste from the previous system folder to the new system folder?

No, making an image won't help. There isn't anything you really need to copy from the /Library/ folder unless it's in the /Library/Applications Support/ folder in which case you shouldn't have any permissions problems unless you reinstalled your OS and used a different username and password. In this case you will have to change to ownership and permissions to enable moving the folders. In some cases try moving the contents of the folder rather than the folder itself.

Following an archive and install with 10.5.8 I find that when attempting to access Address Book, Font Book, Text Edit and Time Machine I get the following admonition on the screen, " You can't open the application because it is not supported on this architecture."

Sdgardne, thank you so much! Using your post and links I was able to restore my address book after upgrading my software and having trouble with my address book. And I am very technologically challenged so I appreciate having something I could understand and follow.
