Cannot arrange/sort libraries manually in Aperture 3.1.3

Hi,
I cannot arrange/sort libraries manually in Aperture 3.1.3. In the Library pane I tried to drag and drop the libraries to keep them manually arranged, having selected "Manual" in the folder and general sorting options for libraries. The weird thing is it seems like I can move a library to some positions, but not all! Any suggestion?
Thanks,
Nic

Hi Nic.  We're going to need some clarification of terms prior to resolving your issue.  Aperture can load and show you only one Library at a time.  What shows on the Library tab of the Inspector are all of the containers in your Library.  There are two top-level containers by default.  One is named after your Library, and contains the default Projects, Photos, Faces, Places, Flagged, & Trash.  The other is named "PROJECTS & ALBUMS".  It comes with a few default containers as well, and is where Aperture creates and stores all the containers you create.
Each of the different container types is identified by an icon.
Could you repost your question specifying the container types?

  • Cannot arrange Event Photos Manually??!

Hi, I cannot manage to arrange photos manually in my Events.
I can sort them by date, name... etc, but not manually. That option is in grey.
Is this a software bug or is there any reason behind this?
    Many  thanks

    There's a reason:
Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken.
You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.
If you want to manually sort in an Event then you've outgrown Events as an organising tool. Now it's time to look at albums (Where you can manually sort) which are much more flexible than Events as an organising tool.

  • 10.8.4 mac book pro arranging photo order manually

My intent is to arrange my photos manually inside my albums.  I have noticed that this option is greyed out when I go: View- sort photos- manually.  I used to move my photos around by dragging them when I was on the 10.4 version of my MPB.  Now, when I click and drag  a photo, the photos in between the spot of my destination do not "open space".  My photos are already separated by album.  Thanks!

Understood.  Dragging should be done not under folder but under the album.  Thanks anyway.  It should have been easier to get.  I guess other people get equally stuck.

  • I have 2nd gen Ipad which I recently updated to ios 6.1.2 and my auto cover lock does not work, so is the lock button, i cannot lock my ipad manually!!

I recently updated my ipad wifi only to the new ios 6.1.2 and initially I had the auto cover lock option which can be seen in the Generals tab, but then it stoped working!! Before the update, the auto cover lock worked fine. So after trying all the options, I then did a complete reset on the ipad and now its gone all together from the General tab!! I can no longer see the "auto cover lock" option.
It got really annoying when I tried to use the lock button and it wont lock the sceen!! To test whether the button was allright, I did a long press and the message came if I wanted to shut down the ipad. So the button works fine, but I cannot use it to manually lock the ipad. Now the only way to lock the ipad is to wait for 2 mins (autolock) and still I cannot wake up the Ipad using the lock button. To do that I have to use the Home Screen button
Does any one else have similar issues and any solutions pls!! Cheers

The iPad cover lock is for when you use a cover with magnets in it to lock and unlock the iPad when you close the cover or open it. Try running a refrigerator magnet along the sides of the iPad and see if that trips the iPad Cover Lock back into the settings.
That is not the same thing as the iPad Auto Lock setting which allows you to set an allotted time before the iPad goes to sleep.
You can try resetting all settings to see if the Auto Lock feature retinrs to the iPad.
Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. This can be a little time consuming re-entering all of the device settings again.

  • Merge two iPhoto libraries into an Aperture library for my Macbook Air

    Hey,
I've searched around a bit for this but can't seem to figure out how to to it.
I'm trying to manage my ~140GB photo library on my Macbook Air which has 128GB of HDD.  On top of that, you can imagine that most of that 128GB is filled with system stuff.
My objective is to keep most of my library offline from the Macbook Air, but still keep it all together.
I kinda went "all-in" with iPhoto a few years back to organize my photos so gave up on Aperture.  I'd always wanted to move to Aperture or Lighroom but the migration appeared to be a complete disaster.  Now with "transparent" compatibility it seems like a no brainer to get the best of both worlds.
I thought that Aperture allowed you store files on external hard drives but still have "thumbnail" access to them even when the drive wasn't connected.  Or did I misread that?  (Is that Lightroom?)
Anyway with the new update I thought that I could merge my available iPhoto libraries into one Aperture library that I could always have access to, while offloading the actual photos somehow to an external HDD.
This would be a real winner for me.  It seems tho that an iPhoto library stays an iPhoto library.  So while merging might be helpful for someone with a big hard drive, it's completely useless for me as if anything, I need to split.  Or create more.  Or some other form of adding complexity.
    Any ideas here?

Figured this out on my own.
Make a backup of everything - Aperture seems to require rebuilds and stuff and stories abound of "things going a bit wrong."
Did you make a backup?  If you don't want to or can't, I wouldn't do this.  After all, it's your photos!
Setup your Aperture library on a USB drive.
Update iphoto to the newest version.  Open all your libraries in iPhoto to update them.  This may take awhile depending on library size.
Import whatever iphoto libraries you have to Aperture.  This make take awhile (hours!) - if your stuff is more than say 25 gigs I'd recommend setting it up for overnight.
Once everything is in Aperture - check its all working right.  Then go ahead and maybe make another backup
Then migrate your photos out of the library.  This takes all the originals and stores them elsewhere, called "offline".  Once they're there, you can't move them around, so pick a good spot!!  This also takes forever.
Once this is done your Aperture library should be smaller and just copy it to your MacbookAir
I'm still working on this as it looks like something went funky and I have to rebuild my thumbnails, another overnight processing thing. Like I said, keep a backup   But I have a slimmed down Library on my Macbook Air now which is what I wanted.
This whole thing is kinda a mess and while it's feasible Apple hasn't made it easy.  There's also some crazy stuff Aperture does with thumbnails and "previews" so that they take a bunch of space up (in my case almost as much as my photos), so you might have to work with that.
The guy at Apertureexpert.com is a genius.
Check out this post for more on slimming your Aperture Library:

Edit:As a side-note I put some HTML in my message and it looks like it isn't used in the forum - why does Apple bother having the formatting tools if they don't work?  Kinda like the close-door button on an elevator?
Edit2: Haha it shows up in the answer but not in the normal thread.  Strange, eh?

  • Cannot open my libraries anymore since 10.0.8 upgrade

    Hello,
I just apply the 10.0.8 upgrade on my iMac under Yosemite and now, I cannot open my libraries anymore ...
I have a message : "Impossible to delete "___Sync___".
I have more than 20 libraries and all have the same problem.
There was no problem before the upgrade.
Do you have an idea ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Thierry

Not being able to delete something could be a permissions problem.  If your libraries are on an external hard disk make sure right click on the disk icon in the Finder and right click - Get Info.  Make sure  "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked (bottom of info window).  You could also repair permissions on your boot drive.
    Geoff.

  • Sorting photos manually in events

I have all my events sorted 'manually' and want to have my photos in each event set the same way, so I can change the order of them instead of sticking with the order iPhoto puts them in. However when I am in an event and try to sort photos 'manually' instead of 'by date', it wont let me do this (the manually option is not highlighted like the 'by date, by keyword, by title' etc are). I have tried resetting all my events to 'by date' but that made no difference. Is there a way to sort my photos in each events 'manually' or do i just have to leave them in the order iphoto chooses?

Manual sorting of photos within event is not available - and the "order iPhoto choose" is the order you took the photos in - it is data and time order
    For other sorting use albums

  • This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support

Editing Error: This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format.
I have been having this issue when trying to open photos in CS4. It only seems to be affecting images from the last year or so, although I'm using the same cameras (Canon 7D, 5D, and S90) as before. My library is large, going back to year 2000, and all the older images seem to work fine, but most all of the recent files display this error when trying to open them is CS4. I've tried the methods described in other threads and on the support website, namely starting aperture while holding option and command, pulling up the options to rebuild the library in various ways. I've done all three options, the last two twice, with no change. This is very frustrating to not be able to use the program in the way I had planned... Any ideas? I'm wondering if my library is simply too large- although I'm not sure if breaking the library into smaller chunks is the best way to go. I prefer having all my photos together. I have found that iMovie fails to operate properly when events get too large. Is this a similar problem?

Again, thanks for the input. As for the first suggestion, when I import without renaming they all work, but as of late, all appear to work no problem. It seems like it was a block of time from roughly October 2009 through November 2010 where most all the files imported during this date demonstrate the problem. As for the second suggestion, I've tried both 8 and 16 bit TIFF and PSD file types selected in the editor preferences, with no luck.
My next move has been to relocate the offending files out of their current location to another location (they are referenced, not managed). In doing this, I encountered what seems to be a file access or privelege error message, although about 20% of the files were moved, and in doing so, it seems to have solved the problem for those. But I don't have a good way of isolating the involved images outside of Aperture, and I don't want to move them with Finder anyways since that would ruin the referencing.
This bug is getting so complicated I'm ready to throw my hands in the air and just go back to Lightroom. Aperture has so much potential, especially in regards to integration with ipods, iPads, other Macs, etc. but in the 4 months I've been using it, I have spent WAY more time addressing buggy issues like this one than the amount of time supposedly saved using Aperture instead of Lightroom.

  • Where, on the add ons page can I sort for Manual Sort Folder thst you speak of in your answer about positioning of a new address?

  • Merging iPhoto libraries...Aperture stalls near the end

that about says it all, trying to merge two iPhoto libraries into one Aperture library.
First off one empty Aperture library, import one iPhoto library, stalls near the end and have to FQ.
Try to import and merge the second library, same stall and have to FQ.
    Any ideas....totally new to Aperture.
Using latest versions of Aperture and iPhoto.

update: second time around with merging libraries, it went to the end. But now I have the one library contained thousands of duplicates!

  • Why am I unable to sort photos manually?

The option to sort photos manually and the option to reset manual sort are grayed out. Why?
    Here is a screenshot: http://f.cl.ly/items/1h1b1m2p3b1O3a1O2V2i/Screen%20Shot%202011-10-03%20at%207.36 .00%20PM.png

Because you are in the Library and Manual Sorting is not an option there. To have manual sorting create an Album and you can do as you want.

  • MS Query...cannot write sorted rows error

I have an MS Query report crated and it was working well until i tried to remove a Criteria Filter within the query. I get an error "Cannot Write Sorted Row". If I acknowledge the error, the change to the criteria is not saved and it reverts to
the original setting. I had several columns sorted, of which i deleted the SQL code for sort thinking that may help. I also tried to delete the Criteria Filter via the wizard and directly in SQL but that did not help.
Any suggestions of what may be the issue?

This is a Power Query forum and so it's unlikely you'll find MS Query experts here. That being said, did you try using Power Query for your scenario?

  • When using suggestedItems or LOV (on the same field) I get " Graph nodes cannot be sorted due to a cycle in the graph."

    Hi. I am on Jdev 11g R2
I have a atribute in the VO with LOV attached. And also another attribute in the same LOV with is dependant to the first LOV. It means when I choose LOV on the first attribute the second LOV uses the chosen value,
I droped the VO as FORM on the page.
When I go to the first attribute and choose the LOV value (from suggestedItems or from LOV search popup) I get the following message:
Graph nodes cannot be sorted due to a cycle in the graph
It only happens for the first time. If i choose LOV after I get the error message , everything is working just fine
Error message indicates that it may be some loop in the VO, but there is no....
Please advice what can it be

  • Cannot find picture when transferring from Aperture to PSE 11

Cannot find picture when transferring from Aperture to PSE 11
I have an older version of PSE and when I transferred a picture from Aperture to PSE9 it would open PSE9 and show the picture.
I set the Preps in Aperture for PSE 11 and the PSE 11 opens but no picture in the box or photo bin or in the top left "open".
I changed the Aperture setting to the PSE Organizer and the same thing happened Organizer open BUT there was no picture to be found.
In Aperture it shows the file being transferred.
I looked in the PSE 11 preps and file but could not find anything.
The fact that it opens the PSE 11 app tells me it is being recognized but the picture (file) is going somewhere else.
    Thanks

    Hi Greg
Make sure you are linking to the application in Support Files and not to an alias.

  • Cannot SortManually Within Libraries.

I have multiple libraries and prefer to sort my photos manually within these libraries. (I also like to sort manually within Albums as well). I have always been able to do so in all versions earlier than iPhoto 11.
iPhoto 11 Help sets forth the following procedure to achieve a manual sort:
    1. Select "Photos" under "Libraries" in the Source List.
    2. Select "View>Sort Photos>By Date"
    3. Then Select "View>Sort Photos>Reset Manual Sort"
However, when I do this, "Reset Manual Sort" remains dimmed (as does "Manually") meaning neither command can be selected and executed.
On the other hand, if I select an Album and do "View>Sort>Manually", "Manually" remains undimmed and can be selected. The photos in the Album can thus be sorted manually, which is O.K. ... except that, when I shut down and restart the computer, the sort order is not remembered by iPhoto and becomes scrambled.
Is this normal for iPhoto 11- if so it is definitely a retrograde step rather than an upgrade, if not, what an I doing wrong ?
I have been a long term user of iPhoto and, until now, have always been very happy with it. I have found each previous upgrade to provide tangible improvements. This is not the case this time around ... in fact, I can really see no improvements at all.
    Any ideas ???
    Maz.

This is the only info in iPhoto's Help file about sorting:
    *Sort Events and photos*
iPhoto displays your Events or photos in the order in which they were taken, from oldest to newest. You can rearrange Events or photos in the photo library or in an album by sorting them.
NOTE: You can sort by only one criterion at a time. For example, you can sort all the photos in an album by date, and then re-sort them all by title, but you can’t sort the photos by date, and then by title within date.
    *To sort Events*
Click to select Events in the Source list and then choose View > Sort Events. (If you’re in full-screen view, move your pointer to the top of the screen to make the menu bar appear.)
Choose an option from the submenu:
*By Date:* Arranges Events or photos by the date on which they were taken, from oldest to newest. To reverse the order, choose View, choose Sort Photos or Sort Events, and then choose Descending.
*By Title*: Arranges Events or photos alphabetically by their titles.
Manually: Lets you drag Events or photos into any order you want, except for photos in a Smart Album.
*To sort photos within Events (but not the Events themselves*)
Click to select Photos in the Source list, choose View > Event Titles, and then choose View > Sort Photos. (If you’re in full-screen view, move your pointer to the top of the screen to make the menu bar appear.)
*Choose an option from the submenu*:
*By Date*: Arranges Events or photos by the date on which they were taken, from oldest to newest. To reverse the order, choose View, choose Sort Photos or Sort Events, and then choose Descending.
*By Keyword:* Arranges photos alphabetically by their keywords.
*By Title:* Arranges Events or photos alphabetically by their titles.
By Rating: Arranges photos from lowest to highest rating. To reverse the order, choose View > Sort Photos > Descending.
*To sort photos (regardless of Event groupings)*
Click to select Photos in the Source list, choose View and make sure Event Titles is deselected, and then choose View > Sort Photos. (If you’re in full-screen view, move your pointer to the top of the screen to make the menu bar appear.)
*Choose an option from the submenu:*
*By Date:* Arranges Events or photos by the date on which they were taken, from oldest to newest. To reverse the order, choose View, choose Sort Photos or Sort Events, and then choose Descending.
*By Keyword:* Arranges photos alphabetically by their keywords.
*By Title:* Arranges Events or photos alphabetically by their titles.
*By Rating:* Arranges photos from lowest to highest rating. To reverse the order, choose View > Sort Photos > Descending.
You can sort by one of the options above, and then manually sort those photos further. To do so, choose View > Sort Events or View > Sort Photos, and then choose Reset Manual Sort. This way you can sort Events or photos by date, for example, and then drag the sorted Events or photos into an order you prefer.
I don't find any subject when searching for manual sort. You may have the iPhoto 09 help file still activated which did allow manual sorting in the Photos mode.
