Cannot automount CDROM in GNOME (SOLVED)

I'm using GNOME with udev, hal and gnome-volume-manager and the CDROM worked perfectly (mount when disk inserted) until today. It just no longer work, and I cannot find any problem in the log file (messages, dmesg, ...). I can add the cdrom in fstab and mount it manually. When I click on the CDROM icon in MyComputer, if says no media in the drive.
I'm running Arch 0.8 on Thinkpad T43, using SCSI DVD/CDRW drive.

They _should_ be under your XDG_DATA_DIR I think. But I don't know if Gnome does that.

Check lsmod if libata is installed.
I remember seeing something that libata needed to be added manually to make DVD/CD work.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot automount PCManFM

I use Openbox and no desktop environment. My file manager PCManFM cannot automount removable devices and the trash supports, which need gvfs and it is installed, does not work. Recently I had cleaned the orphaned packages and maybe something broke it, since it was OK before. In virutalbox I can use the external hard drive and flash disks but not in Arch. Any thoughts?

That was the D-BUS. I erased text from the .xinitrc and wrote it again, so now it OK. Thank you for your time.

I set up Gnome 3 according to the instructions in the wiki. Searching through the forums did not lead to any results.
This happens with all external devices and also with my internal secondary hard drive.

  • [Solved] Cannot delete folder in Gnome

I get an error when trying to delete some folders that are in the trash.  The error states it is a permission problem.  Do I need to add my user to another group?
I took a look at the groups wiki and didn't find anything relating to deleting files, I guess I have to delete them as root right?
What I was wondering was, where are the folders on my filesystem so I can rm them as root.  In Gnome I right click on the file and it says the location is trash:///
I tried searching for them but no success.

  • Cannot automount drives

Hello to all, I've been using arch for about 2 years now, and I have never really had any issues with it(that I couldn't solve by reading the wiki) until now.
I have been learning to understand how systemd works and it seems coherent to me, except for one thing: I cannot make it so my additional partitions and usb drives mount automatically.
    or maybe I should clarify.
Before, with consolekit in /etc/rc.conf, and using openbox, all I had to do was in ~/.xinitrc 'exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session' and whenever a drive was connected all I had to do was to open nautilus and clic on the entry for that device on the panel on the side and it would automatically grant me read and write access as a normal user without asking for passwords, and it worked wonderfully.
Now, I still see the entries in nautilus, but when I clic on them, I get a message saying that I'm not authorized to perform that operation,
systemctl list-unit-files shows that dbus.service, autfs.service and udisks2.service are enabled and usdisk.service is disabled so that it does not conflict with udsik2.service.
I am on the storage and the disk groups, and if I do 'sudo udisks --mount <device>' the device mounts without issues, so udisks does work fine, I just don't know how to set it so I can just clic on the device on nautilus and access the drives.
any help would be greately appreciated.
    Jay

This weekend I made a fresh install in a USB stick, and I have the same problem.
I have, Openbox, PCManFM and Tint2. Another packages, udisks2, gvfs, gamin, polkit, polkit-gnome, libfm and finally udisks (I was trying everything).
Too, try in groups storage and disks, out in groups. Several policy-kits... and I can't see another USBs.
Comparing with my anothers Archs (they are using console-kit-daemon.service); so, I can't see if a 'service' is missing.
This is systemctl output: (automount no working because pcmanfm can't see any media)

  • System Not Automounting CDROM

Hello, my SunFire 240r Solaris 8 server is not automounting CD's. I have tried manually umount\mount commands wihtout success. I cannot get the system to access CD's at all.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks!

If mount -F hsfs -o ro /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s0 /cdrom doesn't work then your CD drive may be defective. I'm not sure of your exact cxtx number because I'm familiar with a 220r, 280r, 420r, 480r & D240 media tray but I'm not quite sure what 240r is. Must be something new.

  • Automount problem with Gnome 2.28

    Hi,
Since there isn't ayone that seems to check the newbie corner, i'll explain my problem again.
When i updated my gnome from 2.26 to 2.28, my system stopped to automount DVDs and USB devices.
Is there anyway to have this working again apart from going back to 2.26 or changing my desktop environment ?
    Thanks for help !

I assume that you get a "not authorized"-Message (or something similar, i am currently not on gnome to check what it was for me).
For me the following solved the problem:
As root create a file "/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/mount.pkla" with the following content (the filename does not really matter as long as the extension is .pkla and is located in this directory):
[allow me to mount my damn drives]
    Identity=unix-group:wheel
    Action=org.freedesktop.devkit.disks.*
    ResultAny=yes
This allows every user in the group "wheel" (this is the group of users that are allowed to su, see here) to do anything that is related to disks. This configurationfile is found by the policykit that is used by Gnome to find out what it is allowed to do. See here for more information about policykit.

  • Intermittent USB automount failure with GNOME 3

    Hi all,
I'm running an up-to-date Arch64 system with a USB 3.0-capable motherboard (via xhci-hcd driver). This is a desktop system that is either in use or in sleep mode most of the time (I don't reboot often). Most of the time, auto-mounting of USB sticks or my camera works perfectly. Plug the device in, it shows up in Nautilus.
However, over the past 4-5 months I've experienced intermittent failures of auto-mount, always after the computer has been through several suspend/resume cycles. When I plug a USB storage device in, I can see it with lsusb, but it doesn't auto-mount. The only way to restore automount functionality is to reboot (restarting GNOME shell, the X server, or logging out don't do it). I've searched the forums, double checked my package installations, udev rules, etc., but can't find any problem. I finally caught some info in the logs tonight; can someone please help me understand what's going on?
This was the first time auto-mount failed after working fine a few minutes before (prior to suspend/resume). Immediately after plugging the device I got this:

I am getting this problem as well. lsusb command does not show my device as being plugged into the computer. The only way to get anything off of any USB storage device is to reboot the system. Very annoying. Again, after suspend/resume is when this problem turns up.
What can I contribute to help solve this issue?

  • Cannot load nvidia driver module [SOLVED]

OK so for some reason I can no longer load the nvidia (proprietary) driver.
I have a laptop with optimus, on board intel and discrete nvidia GTX680M. I use this laptop for cuda development so I don't care about games etc, I just need the driver loaded to debug and run my cuda  apps. bbswitch still works fine as does bumblebee which I don't use normally but I do have it setup and running in case. Also I didn't really work much on coding last week so not sure exactly when this started.
So here is what happens when I try to insert the nvidia module or use optirun:

So in simple terms, the fix invovled ensuring the nvidia module is loaded before the bbswitch module. I'm not sure about the necessity of the things that follow but the fix may possibly also require removing bumblebee and possibly requires removing nvidia from repos and building the driver downloaded from nvidia.
This fix could be completely unrelated to the problems I was having with arch but I cannot verify the fix on arch specifically cos I installed every distro under the sun trying to get it all working and I got it to work on a non arch distro.
So... I'm not sure if I should really mark this a solved because I haven't/can't verify it on arch and technically the solution involved changing to another distro but in fact, I know it has absolutely nothing to do with arch since I saw the same behaviour on 3 other distros. If I have time, I will reinstall arch and verify but for the moment, I have a lot of work to catch up on now that I have a working nvidia driver I can actually use for dev
Anyway, what I think is going on is there is some bizarre issue with bbswitch that stops the nvidia driver from being found because on the current distro I have installed, if I have no bbswitch, no bumblebee and no nvidia modules loaded or services running etc. I can modprobe the nvidia driver and all works fine. I can then modprobe the bbswitch driver and that works too. IF I modprobe the bbswitch driver first and then modprobe the nvidia driver, I get this error that says the nvidia module cant be found. The location it prints is in some updates directory whcih is odd too because I installed from nvidia source and never installed updates at all and made sure that there were absolutely no repo nvidia drivers or updates etc.

  • No sound in Gnome [SOLVED]

Need help with sound. I setup Gnome and when I want check sound it says:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Internal GStreamer error: state change failed.
Please file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer.
Maybe something needs to be put in rc.conf?
What I must to do for the fixing this? Any advices would be apreciated
    HOW IT WAS SOLVED:
    pacman -S alsa-plugins (additionally to alsa-utils alsa-oss)
    afterwards: alsaconf
    and sound appeared!

Just tryed playing a wav with aplay and it didn't give me any errors, but I didn't hear anything if that helps anymore. Running a amixer set MASTER 70% unmute also gives me the unable to find simple control 'MASTER',0 error too, though I can change the volume fine with alsamixer so I'm not sure why that is. The correct module is loaded (snd-hda-intel). Otherwise I'm at a complete loss.
edit: amixer set MASTER 70% gives me the same error on an ubuntu livecd where sound does work so that seems normal. I don't know what changed, but I can now open the volume control so the gstreamer error goes away, however I still can't get any sound, be it with aplay or something else. I'm starting to think the solution may be to pass on arch and move to something better.

  • System Update -- Cannot connect to proxy server - SOLVED

I'm on a ThinkPad T61 running Windows Vista.  When I try to download from System Update, I always get the error message "Cannot connect to proxy server."
I have tried connecting to the Internet directly via Ethernet rather than through a wireless router--it doesn't make any difference.
I have also uninstalled System Update and then installed the version I downloaded from lenovo.com--same result.
System Update is an exception in Windows Firewall, and I have even tried running System Update with Firewall disabled--ditto.
    Can someone please help me?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have discovered one other potential cause of this behaviour.
If your computer is attached to a Domain, ensure you are connected to the Domain using a profile that has administrator rights when attempting these upgrades.
I was using a local profile with administrative rights, on a network connection that was outside of the corporate LAN, and I was getting the "Cannot connect to proxy server" error.
When I connected to our Corporate LAN and logged on to the machine with an administrative profile, the Proxy Server error went away, and I was then able to connect and download my required updates.
Just an FYI if you are doing this inside a large, firewalled LAN running from Active Directory.

  • [gnome SOLVED] menu not refreshing

Hello everyone, seems I am experiencing a problem with my gnome menu, when I add or remove a new entry I have to manually pkill the gnome-panel process for the new entries (or the removed to be actually removed) from it.
    Anyone else experiencing the same?

  • ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

I am using the archlinux-2008.06-core ISO image in my Acer Travelmate 2350.
Instead of showing the menu GRUB drops me to the shell. It seems it cannot load the menu.lst due to not finding the cdrom.
I found a similar bug filed under: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6292
It was closed by using isolinux instead of grub.
    Is this a known problem?

you're up to date.  It doesn't matter what ISO you use.  Having said that, you will want to use 2008.03 or newer.  Pacman changed considerably between 2007.08 and 2008.03.
Yes, I know that it is a rolling release. Still, there are some differences in the installations between the ISOs. The one significant difference that I know of is the usage of UUIDs in Overlord. I will try the 2008.3 and just stab fstab to use UUIDs myself. But what I'd like to know is if there are any other new things in Overlord that I should be prepared to repair in the old release.
