Cannot Backup or Sync

First off I think it is ridiculous that Apple do not offer an online help support but instead you have to ring them up.
Ever since the iTunes and iPod update I have had issues Syncing my iPod and backing it up, also since the iTunes update it keeps crashing! Anyway I updated them both today and since then when I try to Sync I get various errors like
"Could not backup because a session could not be started with the iPod"
"Could not backup because the backup could not be saved on the computer"
"Could not backup because a previous backup is corrupt"
These errors just don't make sense to me, even though the iPod is connect and says its syncing iTunes cant start a session with it, no idea why it cant be saved and says cannot backup because of a corrupt backup even though there are no backups. I've tried everything I can think of, including deleting the folder from the Appdata folder thingy with no luck.
There are times where it seems like its backing up but stays on "Backup Josh's iPod.." for about 5 minutes and on checking in the appdata folder it has just 11 files and doesn't change.
Please dont give me links to look at like how to backup, restore your ipod etc because i've read it all.

The software I downloaded appears to be the correct and most current version, namely 7.1.0 Bundle 1424, which is for Telstra in Australia.

  • Cannot backup and sync after updated iTunes

Cannot backup and sync after updated iTunes. Have tried to hard reset iPhone (all data lost- sad) and reinstalled iTunes. Still cannot work.

It sounds like you bough the song only, not the song and the ringtone.
Ringtones via itunes are available in the U.S. only.
In the U.S. to make a ringtone you:
Buy the song with a bell - 99 cents
Find the song in your library and click the bell
    This bring up the editor.
You edit the song to the portion you want.
Then click buy to purchase the ringtone - another 99 cents.
Then it shows up in ringtones and you can sync.
As I said, this method of creating ringtones is available in the U.S. only.
There are, however, many ways to make ringtones:

  • Received App Error 603, now I can't connect to BlackBerry Desktop to backup or sync contacts/notes before hard reset

    Hi,
For the past several days, my BlackBerry Bold 9650 has been resetting frequently (often going to a white screen reading "App Error 603"), losing access to applications, and generally acting terribly.  I have essentially lost the ability to use it in any meaningful way (the phone features work rarely, e-mail, not at all).  I took it into Sprint and was told that a hard reset would have to be performed, but that I should backup my contacts and notes via BlackBerry Desktop, prior to doing so.  However, thought the Desktop launches when I connect to my MacBook Air, and the status bar says "Connecting," once it stops saying "Connecting," when I click on the device icon in the upper left, it says "(Not connected)," so I cannot backup or sync the data.
Could you please let me know how to backup my contacts and notes before I have the hard reset done, since I desperately need them?
    Thank you very much!

By the way, while the Desktop software says that the Bold 9650 is "(Not Connected)," it does seem to know it's connected to some kind of BlackBerry device.  The status bar stops saying "Connecting..." and, when I phyiscally disconnect the Bold, the status bar then reads, "Device Disconnected."
    Thanks again!

    Hello joelfromn. charleston,
It seems you are unable to activate iMessage on a device with no carrier service. The following article provides information regarding activation issues:
If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime - Apple Support
    Check your device settings
Make sure that you’re connected to a cellular data or Wi-Fi network. If you're using an iPhone, you'll need SMS messaging to activate your phone number with iMessage and FaceTime. Depending on your carrier, you might be charged for this SMS.
Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and make sure that your time zone is set up correctly.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • Cannot backup iPhone 4S to iTunes due to an error

I continue to get an error message without a specific error code when trying to sync and update my iPhone 4S (5.1) to iTunes (10.6.1). This started after an Apple Techincian had me restore the iPhone because I was having WiFi issues, which continued even after the fact. This is a replacement iPhone 4S. My original 4S had battery issues and had to be replaced. Unbeknownst to me, Apple replaces with refurbished iPhones, a practice I do not agree with. I experienced the WiFi dropping from the get-go with the replacement/refurbished iPhone 4S, but hung in there hoping it was just a fluke. It appears this iPhone 4S will need to be replaced.
Back to the issue at hand. I have removed all backups from iTunes. Of course now I have no backups stored on iTunes or iCloud.I have run Disk Utilities to repair permissions. I have reset the iPhone. I tried to restore it, but it will not restore since it cannot backup current data. I have made sure all OS software is updated. I have made sure permissions are unlocked in Backup folder on my HD.
Any other ideas out there would be greatly appreciated.

i can only say about your wi-fi issues. have you tried settings-general-scroll down-reset-reset network settings.
you could also try pressing the wi-fi reset button on your router.

  • Cannot backup my files / copy my files and folders due to error message " The operation can't be completed because an item with the name ".DS_Store" already exists. "

    Hi Apple community!
I have a [rather worrying] problem.
When I try to copy all my files from my documents on my mac [or the entire documents folder] into an external drive, I get this error message
" The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “.DS_Store” already exists. "
I am not given an option to skip this file or anything else.
But I simply cannot complete the operation!
I have tried deleting a few of the .ds_store files, [both in the original and in the destinations]
    but no success.
    The same thing keeps happening.
At first, this was just happening when I was trying to backup to my dropbox folder [the one on my mac's harddrive, which gets synced to the cloud],
but then I tried to back up my documents to my external hard drive, and I realized it is giving me the same error message.
So effectively, it seems I cannot backup my files anywhere!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • ITunes cannot backup the iPhone because an error occurred.

Hey all, I have been having a very troublesome problem lately.  So, I'll just go through the full run down.
My Goal: Save my text messages. That is all I want.
My Problem: Cannot do a full backup to iTunes
I had preordered the iPhone 5 and received it the day it came out.  I was upgrading from an iPhone 4. Before I went to pick it up, I did an iCloud backup from my 4. Logged into my 5, it immediately started downloading everything.  I got home and plugged it into my PC and it synced all my music just fine.
Now, I have not tried to do a full backup since I got my 5 until about a week ago. I have a very large section in "Other" under iTunes. (about 3.5gb). I did research and found out that it is most likely from texts.  I don't want to just get rid of them though so I wanted to save them. When I try to backup through my MacBook Pro 13', it starts, then about 5 seconds later says it cannot backup because an error occured.
Here's where things might be awry.  I only recently just got this MacBook Pro.  However, I correctly transferred my iTunes library from my PC as instructed by Apple on their tutorials page. So, all my settings and such are the same, and it is authorized with both computers.  Well...I tried backing up to my PC and the same exact thing happens.
I have been hacking at this for a solid week.  I created my girlfriend a user name on my MacBook Pro, with a fresh library.  I attempted to backup her 4S to the new library and it worked fine. I have literraly tried everything I can possibly think of, so I will try to list them all as I recall.
    Deleted iCloud backup
Deleted what I call a "phantom backup" from backups folder (it is dated at 12/31/00 at 7:00 P.M. and consistantly keeps recreating)
Created a new username and tried to backup to fresh library
Turned on and off passcode multiple times in different scenarios
    Used different cable
Unsynced all songs, pictures, videos, apps. Everything you can possibly uncheck in iTunes. Still no luck at backup.
Deleting backup folders on both computers.
Plugged cable into the back of PC instead of front/used other port on MacBook Pro.
This is all I can think of right now but it feels like there was a million things I've done. Also, don't mention restoring the phone because what will that do? Delete the messages I'm trying to save.  Constructive feedback is appreciated. Feel free to list any other suggestions, I'll continue scouring the internet.

i have the same problem and am upgrading soon so need this sorted

  • My itunes says that my ipod is synced with another library when it is not and cannot update or sync without wiping it and all its data

My itunes says that my ipod is synced with another library when it is not and cannot update or sync without wiping it and all its data
    Can anyone help me

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your iPod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
All media content will be erased during the first sync, but you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • I reformated my PC and lost my sync key and I have my iPhone connected to Sync but cannot find my sync key in the iPhone app

I have lost my sync key because I reformatted my PC and didn't have a backup of it and my only other device connected to Sync is my iPhone but I cannot access the sync key in the Firefox Home app. I really wish I didn't have to erase all my sync data as I have some important passwords and bookmarks saved only in Sync.

I did. Safari could not open the show sync key addon and Firefox Home didn't even try to load it for some reason.
The second addon install button is grey when I try to open it with Firefox Home.
Thank you, I appreciate the help but I guess unless there's a way to get the sync key for example via sftp from the iPhone (I have jailbroken) I'm pretty much doomed. I tried looking around the Firefox Home app folder but could not find the sync key in there. If someone knows where to look for the key it would be helpful, in case it isn't encrypted.

  • Backup without sync

Ok, so my in-laws rely on me for tech support, and this time they are really challenging my ability to solve the problem.
Mom has an iPad 1, which cannot update to iOS6, and thus cannot be updated any more without breaking the apps on her device.
Dad just upgraded to a new iPhone 4s (since the price dropped with the iphone 5 announcement), and he wants to keep everything updated to the newest level.
Here's the thing: they share their iTunes account, which means that several of their apps are on both devices. The problem that I am anticipating is that dad will update the apps on his iphone 4s, then plug it in to sync it, and it will overwrite the versions of those apps that mom uses on her iPad 1, and then she will plug her iPad into the computer and the we versions will sync up and then won't work the next time she tries to use them.
So.... I thought of making separate accounts for them and copying their iTunes account over, but they have so much music that their hard drive can't handle two copies of the same iTunes library.
I also thought of whether it would be possible to conditionally set the iPad 1 to only backup when it is plugged in, but the iPhone 4s to do the full backup and sync.
I also thought of setting the iPhone 4s up to only iCloud sync and tell dad to never plug it in again. Not sure that would be possible since he would want to switch out the music on it, and I don't think you can do that without syncing apps.
Not sure where else to go with this.
    Help?

Go to iTunes/Settings/Devices to disable autosync.
After that back up manually by right clicking on it in the device list and choosing "backup"

  • When trying to backup and sync my ipad and iphone with itunes the device does not appear int he upper right hand corner anymore

when trying to backup and sync my ipad and iphone to itunes it does not appear in the upper right hand corner under devices for me to click on

In that same window - the one where you see your backups - click on the box at the bottom that say -Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads form syncing automatically. Then click OK and quit iTunes.
Connect your iPad to the computer and launch iTunes. Right click on the iPad name on the left side under the devices heading and select - Restore from backup. A window will pop up from which you can select any of the backups that you have for the iPad. Select the backup that you want to restore from and then go agreed and restore the iPad. Sync with iTunes when you are done.
Remember that when you restore from a backup - you restore everything in that backup to the iPad. You cannot selectively restore content. It is all or none.

  • Cannot remove Aperture synced Photos on iOS 8

    Hey,
I had roughly 26k Aperture images synced to my iPhone 5 when I upgraded to iOS 8. Since the upgrade, all of my Events have been placed into a random order (which is extremely frustrating), the Photos app has become unusably slow and I cannot 'remove' the synced photos via iTunes anymore.
Even though I have unticked the Aperture sync option in iTunes, the photos simply won't delete from the iPhone. It looks like I might have to wipe my phone clean and start again.
On top of that, all of the Photos seem to have been merged with my Camera Roll pictures and iCloud backup attempts to backup all 26k images.
Anyone else having similar issues with iOS 8 and synced Aperture/iPhoto libraries?
    Thanks,
    Darren

Although I have not synced either Aperture or iPhoto images to my phone through iTunes, maybe there is a parallel with syncing images through iTunes from a folder. In that situation, I understand that you actually have to sync an empty folder to the phone if you want to remove the previously synced photos. Might it be similar with Aperture/iPhoto?

  • IPad cannot backup without a verified email address--LOCKED

Message pops up after lock screen that says:
"iPad cannot backup without a verified email address"
with the options of LATER and SETTINGS.  I usually select LATER button and move on.  This time it is locked up.  I tried a hard rest by pressing the home button and power/ sleep button but nothing happens.
I have not setup an iCloud account, and have not set up to sync with a Mac or PC.
    Please help.

    Thanks JimHdk,
Can't get to the settings due to the error message.  It will not allow me to select an option.
I do believe that a hard reset is the answer, and i am able to go through to the black out screen, but the Apple logo is not coming up.
If I am unable to accmplish a hard reset today I may just have to make an appointment at the genius bar.
