Cannot backup to External HD

Whenever I try to set up Time Machine, I get the following error -
"You do not have appropriate access privileges to save file “.0017f2c25d31” in folder “External HD”."
This is especially odd, because I have been using Time Machine since Leopard came out, with no problems.

this is a bug introduced by 10.5.6 update. see this thread for a workaround

  • Cannot backup to external drive since installing updates for Lion.

Since installing updates to Lion os, my external 2TB western digital drive now cannot backup and disc utility cannot repair.
I apparently now need to reformat the external drive but first must back up the files on the external drive or they will be erased.
Does this now mean that I have to buy a second external drive and transfer all the files (one and a half TB's worth) on the existing external drive to the new external drive and then reformat the old drive and then transfer the files back onto the old drive?
Why do software updates for os cause problems with external backup drives?
I thought the whole point of updates was to keep the system running smoothly and not create havoc.

if you backup to the device it should not matter if the backup is erased as long as your main hd don't explode before you can back it up to the external hd once more after it have been formatted
if the hd is empty timemachine does a 100% full backup of everything on the hd to the ext hd

  • Safari won't open and cannot backup with external hard drive

Safari won't open....get error message...and in web browser the number 3. Anyone know about this? And bringing it in to an apple genius, trying to back up and it won't back up either.

You posted in the wrong forum.  This forum is for MacBook Pro technical problems.  Your profile confirms you have an iMac.

  • What is the best way to backup my external drive?

Since it seems you cannot backup an external drive via Time Capsule (as far as I can tell) does anybody have a good solution for backing up an external drive?  I keep all of my media (roughly 230GBs) on an external drive but I am not backing it up as of now for lack of a solution.
    Thanks in advance

If the data is from your computer then you have a copy with your Time Machine.  You can use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone the hard drive.

  • Cannot backup Windows 7 (dual-boot) image to external HD (formated as Mac OS Extended)

I cannot backup my Windows 7 (dual-boot) image to my external HD (formated as Mac OS Extended). I installed MacDrive 8.0 hoping to solve the problem but Windows 7 gives me an error when I try to create a backup: "...drive is not formatted as NTFS, cannot use as backup...".
I also tried making an Image of the Windows 7 partition through Disk Utility but was not allowed to do so.
I am not sure where else to go from here. I need to keep my external hard drive formatted as Mac OS Extended but I also need to backup my Windows 7 partition. I only have the single external at the moment. Is there a way to backup my Windows 7 partition?
    Thanks

Winclone will backup your Windows partition to a Mac formatted drive.
Just search for Winclone on this forum and on Goggle.

  • My MacBook w/ OSX 10.6.8 cannot access my external Time Machine Backup USB Drive.  It says it is a Read Only drive.  When I went to change permissions I found all pernissions were listed as "Custom" and I could not reset them to "Read Write".  Any help!

My MacBook w/ OSX 10.6.8 cannot access my external Time Machine Backup USB Drive.  It says it is a Read Only drive.  When I went to change permissions I found all pernissions were listed as "Custom" and I could not reset them to "Read Write".  Any help would be appreciated.

This can be done easily with ethernet.
    Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS.

  • Cannot backup my files / copy my files and folders due to error message " The operation can't be completed because an item with the name ".DS_Store" already exists. "

    Hi Apple community!
I have a [rather worrying] problem.
When I try to copy all my files from my documents on my mac [or the entire documents folder] into an external drive, I get this error message
" The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “.DS_Store” already exists. "
I am not given an option to skip this file or anything else.
But I simply cannot complete the operation!
I have tried deleting a few of the .ds_store files, [both in the original and in the destinations]
    but no success.
    The same thing keeps happening.
At first, this was just happening when I was trying to backup to my dropbox folder [the one on my mac's harddrive, which gets synced to the cloud],
but then I tried to back up my documents to my external hard drive, and I realized it is giving me the same error message.
So effectively, it seems I cannot backup my files anywhere!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup and external storage as well?

I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?

If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.
... Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?
To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina
That gets a little more expensive but it is the optimum solution.

  • Cannot See FW800 External Drive in Finder (other Mac confirms is there)

I cannot see an external drive connected via Firewire 800, yet it is definitely there from two tests: 1) when I disconnect it I get the typical warning of not ejecting first; and 2) from another Mac on the network, when logged into this Mac, I can see and access the drive in that Mac's Finder. Seems weird that the other Mac can see it connected to this Mac, but the Finder on this Mac cannot. Any tips/suggestions appreciated!

I've got several drives from OWC, some using the Hitachi drive and two with Seagate drives. Most of them are FW800 or what they call Quad interface (esata, FW800, FW400, USB2). I'm not aware of any other reports of problems with OWC drives. OWC does have great tech support both at their site: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm and by telephone: http://eshop.macsales.com/Service/contact/
I move them around quite a bit to different Mac's with Leopard and Snow Leopard without a problem. Since you said the drive shows up on other Mac's (running SL?) I suspect a problem with your OS or the FW800 port on your machine (could be hardware or driver related). I'm assuming that the drive does mount properly in FW400 and USB2, right? Also, I'm assuming that you have already used Disk Utility to Repair your boot drive's permissions.
Just for drill, I always create a temporary admin user account to verify that a problem is actually in the OS and not some left over code in my user account.
If you do this, and the problem continues in the new account I'd make sure you have a bootable backup and look at re-installing SL from the boot disc (it will automatically do an "Archive and Install). I like this explanation of the changes with the SL installer:

  • Can we take backup of external table using expdp

Can we take backup of external table using expdp, please suggest any doc.
    thanks in advance.

    @Fahd
    About the ACCESS_METHOD parameter
-It's undocumented data pump parameter and it's should be used only when requested by Oracle Support
-It's purpose is to specify the loading/unloading method, not filtering object types during the export or import
-If this parameter is not specified, the Data Pump will automatically choose the best method to load or unload the data...
    so,
    the External Tables method
-Is used by the data pump if data cannot be moved in the default method to load/unload data ,
and that is direct path mode, or if there is a situation where parallel SQL can be used to speed up the data move even more

  • Cannot backup iPhone 4S to iTunes due to an error

I continue to get an error message without a specific error code when trying to sync and update my iPhone 4S (5.1) to iTunes (10.6.1). This started after an Apple Techincian had me restore the iPhone because I was having WiFi issues, which continued even after the fact. This is a replacement iPhone 4S. My original 4S had battery issues and had to be replaced. Unbeknownst to me, Apple replaces with refurbished iPhones, a practice I do not agree with. I experienced the WiFi dropping from the get-go with the replacement/refurbished iPhone 4S, but hung in there hoping it was just a fluke. It appears this iPhone 4S will need to be replaced.
Back to the issue at hand. I have removed all backups from iTunes. Of course now I have no backups stored on iTunes or iCloud.I have run Disk Utilities to repair permissions. I have reset the iPhone. I tried to restore it, but it will not restore since it cannot backup current data. I have made sure all OS software is updated. I have made sure permissions are unlocked in Backup folder on my HD.
Any other ideas out there would be greatly appreciated.

i can only say about your wi-fi issues. have you tried settings-general-scroll down-reset-reset network settings.
you could also try pressing the wi-fi reset button on your router.

If I keep restarting the machine suddenly sometime I get mouse and keyboard control and I am able to login and work. • I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. I want to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere? Also is it worth just buying another external HD to back up

I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. However, it is not backed up, so I need a solution to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere for cloud products? Will it be cheaper/easier just to buy another external HD to back up my existing external HD? Thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.
